Red-headed Woodpeckers bred at Cayuga Lake State Park this year. I think they 
used a tree south of the boat ramp. In mid-September Ann Mitchell & I saw both 
an adult and a juvenile in trees on the opposite/west side Lower Lake Road near 
a lodge and north of the parking lot & office. There have been persistent 
reports lately of an adult in the area (with references to the playground), 
including caching acorns, so it seems to be planning to stay the winter.

[cayugabirds-l] Red headed Woodpecker reported

After I watched the Snow geese for a while at Dean’s Cove, then by the road in 
Varick, I drove north on Rt. 89 to the Knox Marcellus marsh to look at the 
sandhill cranes ( & swans & ducks).

 I think there were 3-400 cranes & many of them were calling &  flying out of 
the marsh , across East Road, & several seemed to land in a corn field just 
over the hill to the west.

Just as I was about to leave, a guy in an olive-ish-green Subaru  Forester 
pulled up to chat, and we talked about the snow geese which he thinks flew out 
of the main pool of Montezuma visitors center in the morning & over to the lake.
As he was about to leave, he said, “and don’t forget about the Redheaded 
woodpecker over at Cayuga Lake State Park!”

 I said that I didn’t know about that bird and he said it was across from one 
of the offices & a parking lot of the state park people, and on the lake side 
of the road.

I did not have time to go look for it & the sun was setting, so I thought 
chances were slim that I could find it, anyway.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Ellis Hollow last week

Hi All,
Sorry for the late post, but...

Yesterday, my son showed me a photo of a bird he saw in Ellis Hollow last
week that he realized was one he had not seen before.  It was an adult
Red-headed Woodpecker.  Who knows where is might be by now, but please keep
your eyes out for that have been showing up more and more in recent years
in the Cayuga Lake basin.

I saw an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in Sapsucker Woods this morning,
flying northeast over the Wilson Trail North. so perhaps your suspicions
were correct, Suan.

was flashing a lot of white, was a Northern Mockingbird.

bluejay-like bird but with all-white secondaries against an otherwise
dark wing. I didn't have binoculars on me and was soon distracted by
other stuff. But on further reflection, Red-headed Woodpecker is the
only bird I can think of with that wing pattern. (That and gadwall,
which this was not :-). I don't suppose anyone at the lab has seen
one.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker yard bird

I had a very cool yard bird sighting today! I was coming back from my trail cam 
spot when I saw an unusual bird fly past. I wasn’t carrying binoculars, but I 
could tell that it was a Red-headed Woodpecker without needing them. Solid red 
head, huge white patch as it flew away. I saw it perched too. We have a lot of 
dead trees on our forested land, so it makes sense. I grew up in the south 
where this bird is very common, but I have never seen one in Lansing NY. 

Sadly, didn’t get a photo and couldn’t relocate it after a search. 

Last night we were treated to a Great-Horned Owl hooting away, too.  Another 
fun surprise. The birds are really active right now.

and the woodpecker was still there, calling actively and flying around the

A red-headed woodpecker has visited our feeder/yard in Lansing three days in a 
row! 

We had a pretty nice view of it last night hopping between trees, calling and 
drumming frequently. Hoping it will stick around.

on Thursday evening (5/20), near intersection off Congress St and Seneca
St. It was calling repeatedly, and doing some drumming on a metal pipe.

Long ago, in the early 1990's when our daughter studied at Wells 
College, on one of my many trips there, I wandered back into the woods 
behind the Wells dorms.   There I saw my first RHWO. There was no eBird 
then, and I may have noted it down with my informal tick-off in my field 
guide.
It was many years before I saw my next RHWO along Coddington Rd and most 
recently my greatest surprise(2019) when I looked out our dining room 
window & saw a RHWO perched on our feeder not 5 feet away! Only a few 
seconds before he flew off across the backyard. Here's my entry from eBird:

In 2011 many birders, including my husband & me, went over to the Aurora
to see the nesting RH Woodpeckers at Paines Creek, easily visible and
audible from Rte 90.  This is abt 1/2 mile north of Long Point.  A
gentleman who said he lived in Aurora stopped to chat with my husband &
me.  He seemed surprised by all the birders and said he had seen RH
Woodpeckers in Aurora since he had moved there from Mississippi, where
he said they were pretty common, abt 10 years before.  He also directed
me to a second nest further north on Rte 90 - he said he met his kids
there when the bus dropped them off from school so had noticed the nest
tree while waiting, and he suspected these weren't the only two nests in
and around the village but they were the only two he knew of that
spring.  I went and easily found the second nest with his directions.

There is only a scattering of eBird reports for Aurora: 1972, 1990,
1996, 2008, and 2011 (many). Yet in 2011 the gentleman from Mississippi,
who seemed quite reliable (and definitely knew the difference between a
Red-Bellied & Red_Headed Woodpecker) said they were there every year.
Does anyone in Aurora enter RH Woodpeckers in eBird when they see them,
or otherwise keep track of them?  Does anyone else regularly check out
the Aurora area for them?

Just curious about whether they are usually absent or only usually
absent from birding records.

[cayugabirds-l] RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in cavity

This afternoon the 13th I was able to track a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER to a 
possible nest site, a cavity in a snag of a tree, the species of which I have 
not yet figured out but will. This bird has been seen or heard since 4 May, and 
a pair successfully nested in the same vicinity last year. The bird entered the 
cavity and repeatedly ejected wood chips, as documented in some photos at
 https://ebird.org/checklist/S68995280 
doing a lot of calling before entering the cavity. I enjoyed Jay McGowan’s 
description of this call as ‘desperate,’ there is something to that. It is 
distinctly higher-pitched than the more commonly heard Red-bellied. (Kweeah 
versus Kwirr, respectively, per Pieplow, if that helps).
The site is on a restricted access on neighboring private property, but with 
patience and luck you will be able to hear it, and maybe see it, somewhere 
around the intersection of Bradley and Strowbridge. It does occasionally come 
to our suet feeder, where I live at 30 Bradley. I’m of course hoping to see or 
hear two birds which has not occurred as of yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker family, photos of juveniles

I finally got photos of juvenile(s), and verified 2 adults and 2 juvenile 
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS; generally mid-morning this family tends to move from 
trees and suet feeders at 35 Bradley (Trumansburg) over to my yard, favoring 3 
old sugar maples, two that border Bradley and one just east of Bradley on 
Strowbridge. Clearly saw the 4 birds in flight and on perches. It’s a little 
tricky with the juvenile photos, but it looks to me like one is lighter in 
plumage than the one shown on the suet feeder. Not as much vocalization as 
previously heard, some short calls and rattles. Next challenge is to get some 
good vocalizations recorded.
One of the juveniles was zig-zagging from tree to tree, apparently hawking 
insects, which I have not seen the adults doing.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher

Yesterday the 11th I saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER from my deck visit our suet 
feeder, and then forage for a few minutes in a very large Silver Maple tree 
before flying off. I had previously seen one from my yard on May 16th. This 
time I had enough time to grab my camera, and was able to get a couple of 
serviceable photos while it was in the maple. This was in the northern area of 
Trumansburg.

Last Friday the 7th on Cayuta Creek south of Cayuta Lake in Schuyler County I 
had 3 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS, all vocalizing, 2 seen well. Photos and a short

[cayugabirds-l] RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at our feeders -- once in 50+ years!

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER appeared briefly at our feeders next to our 
dining room windows at about 6:45pm; it stayed for about 15 seconds 
before flying off eastwards over the next yard, flashing brilliant black 
and white. Not long enough to get a photo, but both Gin and I saw it 
perched on and eating out of the feeder containing "Ithaca Blend" mix. 
No need for binoculars, it was within 10 ft of where I was sitting. (No 
it was definitely NOT a Red-Bellied Wdpkr.) This is the first time it 
was close enough to see clearly the black line at the base of the red 
throat.

I went outside to see if there was any sign of it anywhere but no luck. 
I will report it if seen again.

Our ~1.7acre yard is not typical RHwoodpecker habitat. This was a once 
in 50+ years sighting! We regularly have all the other local woodpeckers 
at our feeders, including Pileated, and YBSapsuckers and Flickers come 
around but not to the feeders.

Hope it is seen again somewhere in Ellis Hollow.

Fortunately, I had my camera and got off a few shots before it flew out of my 
property heading West. I went looking for it but could not re-find it. I

And of course, within minutes after seeing my FOY hummer, I put out the feeder

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker present, Sun 12/31

On Sunday morning at around 10:40, I saw the continuing adult RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER in Cornell’s Palmer Woods.  It was in the same location as often
reported since mid-November, in the woods along the red-blazed trail that
extends west from the large grassy clearing at the top of the slope
(approximately 42.4617N, 76.4812W).  But it wasn’t as easy to find as on my
past visits, as it mostly stayed still.



I got a nice bonus sighting as I was waiting out the woodpecker – a
PEREGRINE FALCON flying eastbound overhead, low enough that I could see its
facial pattern as well as its distinctive shape.



Also, the EASTERN SCREECH-OWL along Siena Drive has continued to appear
every day in the ~90 minutes before sunset every day I’ve looked since
early November, including today.

[cayugabirds-l] Red headed woodpecker continues in Palmer Woods this morning

Just returned from a lengthy viewing of the RH woodpecker at the top of the 
knoll on the red trail in Palmer Woods between 9 and 10 am. The same behavior 
as Liisa described. It seemed to be feeding wherever it landed.

Thanks to this list I have been able to see an all-time favorite bird for the 
first time in this area and also learn of Palmer Woods. Thanks also to the 
Botanic Gardens for protecting this bit of predominantly oak woodland. Blue 
jays, red-bellied woodpecker(s), and a titmouse were also feeding in the woods 
this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker, Durland Preserve

This morning I found a juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the Durland
Preserve on Ellis Hollow Road. It flew into a snag along the first hedgerow
not far in from the parking lot, before the trail in the woods to the
Hirshfeld Platform. It didn't stay long before flying over the woods headed
west. I was not able to relocate it in this area or in the snags at the
platform, but it's possible it could still be around. Checklist with a

Alex Wiebe also had a Red-headed near campus yesterday, apparently
exhibiting pretty similar behavior:

Lots of new migrants are around today, with several good warbler flocks
around the north side of the Lab of Ornithology and on the Wilson Trail. I
highly recommended getting out today or this weekend to see some warbler
diversity.

feeling we should be seeing more of them in the Finger Lakes, shouldn't
we???!   I never hear it reported other than near Montezuma (or did I miss

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker in Lansing

Be on the lookout:

I just talked to a woman who lives on Peruville Rd (nearest cross street:
Sheldon) who has been observing a Red-headed Woodpecker at her feeders for
several days. She has observed it flying across the street to the same
location many times, and suspects there may be a nest.  I have encouraged
her to post to eBird.

This is at least the third year over the last 10 or so, that we've seen a flock 
of kingbirds come and devour the fruit on a pagoda dogwood, just as the fruit 
are getting ripe.

I agree with Sue that they look like red-osier dogwood fruits, they're about 
the correct size. A few years back when I was photographing them at Myers, they 
were eating a lot of wild grape, both unripe and ripe, at this time of year, in 
addition to insects. I think it's pretty typical for them to switch to fruit at 
this season whether or not it's been dry. Have seen kingbirds do similar with 
wild raspberries and gray dogwood berries. A number of what we think of as 
insectivorous types switch to fruit when it's available, and the dogwoods in 
particular are high-fat fruits, good for fueling migration...red-eyed vireos 
and various warblers etc.

Birds have such COOL behaviors!

I have an image of this year's Red Headed Woodpecker.  It's not great but you 
can see what you need to for this question.   Do they eat eggs of other birds?  
Are those eggs or fecal sacs?  I watched it up in a tree and then it dove into 
some bushes.  It came up on the dead tree with what you see in its mouth.  I 
think it robbed eggs from another bird's nest, but I'm not sure.  I don't think 
it was around its own nest hole to remove fecal sacs. It had been in a green 
tree, not a dead one.   Any ideas?  It was the only time I was able to find the 
bird this year.

Sorry to attach to Michael's email but, I am new to the list.

I would greatly appreciate some help and advice.  I am planning a trip to 
Chicago in very early November.  I am considering driving so I can stop and do 
some birding.  Can someone advise as to what are the best places to bird along 
the way?  I have looked at the Indiana Audubon site but I was just able to 
obtain a list of sites not attached to a map (was not working).  Even with the 
map and site list I am hoping someone educated in the impact of migration on 
these sites.

Bottom line, where should I stop or is it too late in the migration?

Hello Marc,

One idea is to check out eBird.  Go to Explore a Region (choose a state or even 
a county within a state along your route), and you'll get a map with stick pins 
showing hotspots where people have been reporting checklists.  Alternatively, 
if you have some target birds you want to try to see, go to Find a Species, and 
type in the name of the bird.  You'll get a map with stickpins showing where 
that species has been reported.  You can narrow your search by date.  For 
example, just choose the current month, and the map will show sites where the 
species has been reported in just this calendar month for this year.

[cayugabirds-l] Red Headed Woodpecker Hamlin Beach State Park June 22 2015

Red headed woodpecker was calling by snackbar between area 1 and 2. Also had an 
almost adult COMMON LOON. There were plenty of CASPIAN TERNS. There were many 
COMMON TERNS too, one that had almost an entirely red bill. There was a small 
touch of gray at the very tip but only from the right side of bird. When the 
bird looked left it was all red!!! I got great looks at this bird as it was on 
a buoy. Its legs were the same size as the other commons, wing pattern similar 
when it flew, plus body was gray like wings so I am going with COTE. I could 
see how this can be a difficult id and confused with ARCTIC TERN. I presume the 
amount of black on the end of the bill of the COTE varies

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed woodpecker 3.4 mi. from Union Springs

[John and Fritzie Blizzard]

Daughter, Becky arrived home from work about 4:30  p.m. to the flash of 
clearly defined, bright black  white color in her trees on Ridge Rd. 
out of Union Springs. Grabbing her binox from her car she soon found the 
bird also had a bright red head!


She called me as she was taking pix  listening to its loud call. 
Needless to say, she was thrilled. Kathy Strickland lives not too far 
away  she will no doubt try to re-find it when she gets home. Both 
Kathy  Becky are in the basin so a happy find for Becky, esp. since 
she saw it BEFORE going out to mow her lawn. We're hoping it will find a 
nesting hole  a mate in that area. Her pix leave NO doubt about the ID.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker at Palmer Woods

Sorry for the late post, I just realized this hadn't made it to
Cayugabirds. This morning David Weber found an adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER
in Palmer Woods on north campus. He first had it fly over, then it returned
to some dead trees and was present for at least an hour after that. This
was in the low swampy area along Pleasant Grove Brook well north of A-Lot,
probably at least audible (it was calling frequently) from the east end of
Sheldon Road or from Pleasant Grove Lane.

[cayugabirds-l] RED-HEADED WOODPECKER: Newfield, NY

Just a heads-up:

My co-worker, Fred Channell, came in this morning and clearly described an 
adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, which he observed flying across the road in front 
of him around 8:45am. The bird was flying from right to left across Route 13 
North-bound, just after but very near the intersection of Decker Road and Route 
13. The bird was headed in a Northwesterly direction. This is located in the 
very NE corner of the Town of Newfield. He described the bird as having a 
bright ruby-read tomato for a head (completely red head) with a distinct and 
bright white wing patch at the base of the wings (secondaries) – contrasting 
against the black outer half of the wings (primaries) – giving a blinking or 
flashing black-and-white appearance in flight. This bird was like nothing he 
had ever seen before and was very noticeable to him.

For those of you who have asked: I haven’t seen the RH woodpecker in the last 
several hours.   I’ll post again if it reappears; my hunch is that it moved 
through rather quickly.   There is no question of the ID: we have all the 
resident woodpeckers in our woods; this was clearly a Red-headed—full deep red 
head, large white patch on the wings, distinctive white and black in flight.
I’ve seen the RHW at May’s Point and that is what we had here.An exciting 
day, but I didn’t get much work done.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker may's Point

Meg and I took a trip up to May's point this afternoon to see if we 
could see the baby Red-headed Woodpecker (s) and we were not 
dissapointed. At least one little fellow, or gal, kept sticking it's 
little gray head and upper body out to beg for food.  We could not tell 
if it was a single bird or they were taking turns peaking about. We saw 
two adults flying around and bring food to the nest hole. Great views 
until it started to pour.

The woodpeckers seem to feeding the babies both insects and berries.  The 
parents certainly don't go to the hole with food as often as you would think 
they should.  Of course, we don't know how many young they are feeding.

Thanks for this pointer … my 12 yr old son was very happy to be able to add 
these to his summer bird photography project. We saw two red-headed woodpeckers 
among those dead trees and he got some nice photos and a bit of video of one of

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker

Hi All,
 
I was able to find the Red-headed Woodpecker with Dave and Donna's directions. 
With patience, I was able to observe it both at the tree they are working at 
and at closer ranges. They appeared to exchange the job of excavating with one 
of them almost always there. When they fly with their distinctive black and 
white pattern, one should find the tree they are working on. Here are a couple, 
though I have some more I haven't had time to even look at. Many thanks for the 
postings. It is a beautiful bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Red headed woodpecker

Fennel rd. where Joe Brin reported RHWP. I have just seen 2 males. I believe 
there are 2 active holes here. I even took a picture of 2 males in the same 
shot. I will try and figure a way to post these.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker at Mays Point

Had a quick glimpse of a red-headed woodpecker on S. Mays Point Rd (across from 
fishing access) about 11 AM Sunday. It was getting mobbed by blackbirds and 
didn’t stay around long.

[cayugabirds-l] RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at my suet feeder and trees!

A casual early afternoon glance down at Cayuga Lake from my study 
just now was distracted by my suet feeder that is mounted above the 
west porch: It revealed a RED HEADED WOODPECKER for about 5 minutes 
of spectacular beauty!  I hope it returns!  This is my first in about 
10 years high on Teeter Rd.


This Red Head flew, after several minutes of busy feeding on the 
suit, into our nearby dense tree which serves a a resting place for 
our feeders.  This has been especially true for species that i did 
not expect to see depleting our suit feeders, including red Wing 
Blackbirds, Blue Jays [with little success in their feeding], and 
other Blackbird species.


I hope the Red Head returns, and maybe moves in

After stopping last week on the way to Montesuma to look 
unsuccessfully for the reported Redheaded Woodpecker in the woods 
along next to highway this one was a delight.  Today was especially 
rewarding from reflections on my childhood about 65 years ago in 
rural Missouri where visits to country farms frequently showed me the 
Red Heads in the tree-hedges along the country farm fields.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker-Yes

Shannon and I drove up to Aurora this morning to look for the Red-headed
Woodpeckers previously reported in Aurora. We were there for about 20
minutes  before one flew from the west side of Rt. 90 to the woodlot where
others had found them.  The bird we saw flew initially to a tree on the
edge and then to the Sycamore Jay mentioned,  where I lost it for a few
minutes. I saw it fly again a bit to the N where it stayed sitting on a
horizontal branch affording us both good views. 

Also in the same general area were an Osprey, Belted Kingfisher, E Wood
Pewee, Chestnut-sided Warbler,  Yellow Warbler, Catbird and Baltimore Oriole.

We checked Ledyard Rd for Grasshopper Sparrow but came up empty,  but with
the wind and contruction noise up the road we easily could have missed them...

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker

I was stunned to look out my window a few minutes ago to see a brilliant male 
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in my yard at the bottom of Culver Road (southwest town 
of Ithaca). The bird landed first on a small sunflower seed feeder where two 
brilliant male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were feeding. I was busy appreciating 
the black/white/red spring extravaganza (and the sunshine) when it intensified 
as the woodpecker flew to the feeder, then to a branch of the big maple above, 
appeared to cache a piece of suet, then disappeared to the east. I haven't been 
able to refind the bird as of this writing.

This isn't far from where, last year (?) someone reported a RED-HEADED 
WOODPECKER at Old Hundred at the corner of Bostwick Rd. and Five Mile Dr.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker

I just saw a juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker at Monkey Run South. It  
was along the red trail east of monkey run rd.  There is a Ruffed  
Grouse drumming in the same area as well as an Eastern Phoebe calling.  
This is just past where the trail and river turns to the north.  
According to iPhone GPS coordinates are. 42.46604 -76.42337
