[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl at Stewart Park

2022-03-16 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

I i just wanted to share that there is a nice collection of waterfowl off of
Sewart Park this morning. No rarities, but a nice collection of wood ducks,
shovelers, green-winged teal (I had counted 84), ring-necked duck, bufflehead,
gadwall, scaup, mergansers, and a few wigeon and one pintail, to go along with
the regulars at the park. I found good viewing at the shore north of the Swan
Pond. I'm willing to bet the numbers are higher than what I counted as there's
quite a lot of ducks and they move around. Nice birding altogether!

 Cheers,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl/Crane update from Montezuma

2022-03-09 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Good afternoon,

Wow it’s been a wild couple of days! We went from relatively low numbers of
waterfowl and lots of ice and snow on Saturday to LOTS of birds and a lot more
open water.

“Route 31 Muck”: this is the hot spot. These flooded ag fields are privately
owned, but the birds do not care. Estimated 600,000+ Snow Geese (and they keep
piling in), 3000 swans (90/10 Tundra/Trumpeter), Canadas of course, and
thousands of ducks dominated by Northern Pintail currently. There are several
gravel pull offs to get off the road safely. You will get some great views from
this spot.

Armitage Road, Savannah: Don’t be fooled by the Snow Goose decoy spread on the
south side of the road! The Western half of the road is flooded ag fields and
there are quite a few swans, ducks, gulls, etc. here. I picked out some
Ring-necked Ducks among others there this morning. Also there is a nearby Bald
Eagle nest, so keep your eyes open for the adults. Sandhill Cranes also favor
the drier fields to the east sometimes. I have yet to see any here, but they
could arrive at any time.

Sandhill Cranes are being seen elsewhere: we’ve had them at the MAC, I just saw
some along Morgan Road (Savannah), and from Carncross as well.

Don’t delay in visiting! They won’t stick around forever- and no, I don’t know
when they are leaving 😊

Check us out on Facebook, I post updates there too. Most recent post has a map
in the comments of how to find the muck flats: https://fb.watch/bEQ124K350/

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl

2019-03-26 Thread Dave Nutter
I went to Montezuma on the west side of Cayuga Lake yesterday (26 March). There
are still resting Snow Goose concentrations off Poplar Beach Rd near the Beer
Garden or FLLT’s Van Riker Preserve on NYS-89 and at Knox-Marsellus Marsh off
East Road in Montezuma NWR. Along Lower Lake Rd there were 3 male Blue-winged
Teal opposite #2776. I saw a male Eurasian Wigeon with American Wigeons in the
back of the pond at Martens Tract off Savannah-Spring Lake Rd and in the front
center of Knox-Marsellus. Three Greater Yellowlegs continue in the flooded
field alongside Carncross Rd. The Wildlife Drive opens 1 April.

were on the other side of the lake when flight after flight of panicky

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl East Shore Park Ithaca and North Mill Pond Union Springs

2018-01-19 Thread David Nicosia
All,

Had some time today so decided to leave frozen Broome County with Dan
Watkins
and check out some waterfowl along Cayuga Lake. We didn't have much time
so we focused on East Shore Park Ithaca and North Mill Pond Union Springs
where
awesome views of waterfowl were possible.

East Shore Park had rafts of Aythya very close mostly REDHEAD, with several
GREATER and LESSER SCAUP sprinkled in here and there. Another highlight was
5 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS distant.

North Mill Pond had mostly REDHEADS, one RING-NECKED DUCK, AMERICAN WIGEON,
GADWALL, female PINTAIL, HOODED MERGANSER, 2 TRUMPETER SWANS, BLACK DUCKS,
MALLARDS, and BUFFLEHEAD. We also had a PEREGRINE FALCON fly over the ducks
and they didn't flush which was strange. It landed in a tree and we got
good looks at this bird and made sure it wasn't a gyr.

We got great looks at mostly common birds and this was very gratifying as
waterfowl have become scarce in Broome with all the ice...

Best,
Dave

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl sighting/buntings

2018-01-10 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Today, I drove north to Union Springs to see the reported waterfowl in the two
ponds there.
Just a moderate amount of ducks and geese were in the Mill Pond and only a few
ducks in the Factory Pond.
On the way there, from Rt. 90, I had noticed the ice edge was about opposite
Allens Point, south of Union Springs, so I went there after visiting the ponds.

First I drove down Allens Point Road and luckily there is a good clearing at
the place it nears the lake due to a house being built there.
The ice edge was curved around sort of between Allens Point and Carrs Cove,
just south of Allens Pt., out into the deep water area & across the lake.

All along the edge of the ice curve were thousands of ducks, lots of geese and
a small number of swans.
I also drove into Carrs Cove and down and around what seemed to be a public
road to what looks like a boat launching area, where I saw a lot of the birds a
little closer.

Later, on Great Gully Road, going east from Rt. 90 (Historical marker at the
turnoff says "Cayuga Castle"), south of Union Springs, I got a good look at a
nice flock (~100 birds) of SNOW BUNTINGS feeding in a hay or grain field. They
flew up and around and landed a few times, and then flew all over, not
landing. They finally disappeared.
During this last flight, I saw first a NORTHERN HARRIER fly by, then a little
later what I think was a small SHARP SHINNED HAWK, so maybe the hawks scared
the buntings away from their feeding ground.

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl hunting at Salt Pt?

2015-11-03 Thread Marie P. Read
I headed over to MyersPark/ Salt Pt. intending to photograph Canada Geese
taking off against the fall colors (as they did there yesterday). To my
disappointment, I found instead someone setting out an array of mallard decoys
and a hunting blind on the point just below the Osprey nest platform at Salt
Pt. No real waterfowl anywhere. Assuming hunting was illegal in the "Salt Pt.
Conservation Area", I went over to Salt Pt. intending to talk to the person,
but again to my dismay, that none of the signage, including the DEC "rules"
sign as you enter Salt Pt. says anything about whether waterfowl hunting there
is prohibited or permitted. Does anyone know whether hunting is legal there?

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl panic at dusk

2015-10-15 Thread AB Clark
At about 615 tonight, coming back from a walk N of Hile School Rd, just E of
the old railroad, I noticed an unusual no. of ducks suddenly in the air, flying
a bit erratically and scattering.

Then a huge (they are all huge) maroon hot air balloon edged over the trees,
going N above the dip/wetland that is the marshy headwaters of Owasco Lake.
This is an important roosting area for ducks, geese, Redwinged Blackbirds and
the large number of Rusty Blackbirds that have joined them this week. (Around 5
pm, I counted about 35 Rustys…many vocalizing in groups as the sun lowered,
keeping a little separate from the Redwings and vice versa. But over the next
hour, groups of both blackbirds kept flying W toward the marshes, so I really
have no idea how many of either.)

In any case, the balloon suddenly went lower and looked like it was going to
land in the marsh. It seemed to be running out of fuel, as the pilot kept
fireing intermittently and the flame would die abruptly. My neighbors were
watching from the road at the marsh and said the basket almost touched down.
As it skimmed through, hundreds of very loudly calling Canada geese rose out,
along with more mallards and woodies, scattering in subgroups in all
directions. Quite the cacaphony! Some seemed unwilling to go back to the
marsh, some circling and circling and landing finally in a cornfield. Other
ducks appeared to be heading S to somewhere else. I had visions of chest
waders and a long fight with masses of deflated balloon.

Fortunately for balloonists and everyone’s evening, they found enough fuel to
get it above key trees, lift out of the marshland and land in some fields to
the NE, nearer Peruville Road.

So if anyone was wondering, geese think balloons are scary.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl mortality in our area?

2015-03-04 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Hi all,

Beth Bunting from the Cornell Vet School sent me this message today:

*...we have been seeing a number of dead/starving ducks, grebes and raptors
from around the Great lakes and now this week we are hearing about seaduck
deaths in East Hampton. This is presumably from the extensive ice cover. We
are trying to assist rehabilitators with moving ducks and grebes to open
water. Do you have any info about duck populations on either Seneca or
Cayuga Lake? Are the birds out there? Is anyone talking about unusual
mortalities in the area?*

*Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine*

*Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory*

*Ithaca, NY 14850*

I let her know that there were birds out there, and that I hadn't heard of
any mortality events on Seneca or Cayuga this year...putting the word out
in case anyone has heard or seen anything that might be of interest to her
and her team Feel free to contact her directly.

Thanks,

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl show at south end of Cayuga lake

2015-01-17 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
Impressive numbers of waterfowl off Stewart park and east shore. I am just
starting to sort through it, but I estimate 25,000 Redheads and 450 Common
Mergansers. Perhaps more of each than I have ever seen at once.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl hunting regulation

2015-01-08 Thread Alicia Plotkin
In 2005 the Ithaca City Court ruled that only the State of New York can
regulations activities in or on Cayuga Lake because the State has
retained its rights to regulate the lake. The court cited a Court of
Appeals case that ruled on jurisdiction over activity in Canandaigua
Lake. (The Court of Appeals is the highest court in NYS.) So the
courts already have looked at the question of jurisdiction over the lake
and ruled against the application of an ordinance enacted by
municipalities or authorities to anything happening in or on Cayuga
Lake. The City Court ruling was in the context of an off leash dog
swimming in the south end of the lake, and the court threw out the case
against the dog owner, saying the leash law didn't apply in Cayuga Lake
because the State has no leash law. The same logic would apply to the
City's firearm ordinance if someone tried to ticket or arrest a hunter
working in or on the lake.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl hunting regulation

2015-01-07 Thread Dave Nutter
Here is a more complete quote from that DEC webpage:

"It is possible for local municipalities (such as villages and towns) to pass
ordinances prohibiting discharge of firearms. Since there are so many
municipalities, and the laws can change at any time, DEC cannot keep track of
all these ordinances. It is the responsibility of the hunter to know if a
specific area is legal to hunt before going afield (check with the town or
village clerk's office, or local police department). If a hunter encounters a
"no discharge" or "no hunting" ordinance, they should try to obtain a copy of
both the ordinance and a map of the municipalities' boundary lines. They may
find out that the ordinance actually allows hunting under specific
circumstances (such as over water, or under the permission of a landowner) or
that the area they are looking at is actually out of the municipality's
jurisdiction. For a complete listing of town codes and ordinances, you can
visit the New York eCode website (link in the right column.)

*Note: The State holds the authority to regulate hunting, and no lesser
government can usurp that authority. Although "No Hunting" laws are not valid,
they may nonetheless be on the books in some municipalities."

This DEC website appears conflicted. The eCode website it links shows that the
City of Ithaca has both a "local ordinance prohibiting discharge of firearms"
(Ithaca City Code Section 219-1 http://www.ecode360.com/8390734 ) and a "no
hunting" ordinance (Section 219-2), which hunters are responsible for knowing
and are advised to request from local authorities along with a map, the same
information I provided. The implication is that the local bans should be
obeyed. The author of the "Note" (which was added in a different font) appears
to have a different attitude yet did not delete the previous warning. I'd like
authoritative clarification. That AG opinion is 27 years old and refers to a
different body of water, whereas I just had a DEC official tell me Ithaca's
laws do apply.

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl hunting regulation

2015-01-07 Thread Geo Kloppel
After a careful reading of Title 7 and Title 9 of the state Environmental
Conservation Law, I've come around to the view that the Ithaca ordinance
prohibiting hunting is unenforceable with respect to the state waters that
lie within the city limits, as it conflicts with ECL Section 11-0701[1] and
11-0931(4)b[4].

The Attorney General's Office opined in 1987, concerning a similar question
about portions of Oswego harbor that lie within that city's limits, that
the privileges granted to waterfowl hunters by the ECL can't be revoked by
conflicting ordinance.

Quoting from a DEC webpage http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/40550.html :

"The State holds the authority to regulate hunting, and no lesser
government can usurp that authority. Although "No Hunting" laws are not
valid, they may nonetheless be on the books in some municipalities."

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl counting method

2014-12-28 Thread Susan Fast
I was waiting at the marsh at the east end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd. (Montezuma
area) for possible short-eared owls late this afternoon.  Sporadically, there
were MALLARDS flying hither and yon in small groups.  If I had had to estimate
their numbers in the whole marsh,  I would have guessed a couple hundred.  At
1615, a helicopter flew by to the north of the road and I watched it.  Turning
around, I was amazed to find the sky south of the road literally full of ducks.
Several thousand had been disturbed and were milling around.  Within a minute
of the chopper's exit, all had resettled.  My idea is to run a helicopter by a
given marsh, then take a picture using a wide-angle lens, print it out, enlarge
it, and then count the dots.  Maybe dynamite would also get them all up.Don't
thank me, just send me money.    P.S.  no owls seen, although 2 HARRIERS and 2
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were actively hunting the marsh.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl - wyers/sheldrake

2014-01-27 Thread Michele Mannella
On Saturday afternoon, I finally got to take a drive along Wyers Road and
Sheldrake Park in Ovid and test my waterfowl id skills I learned from the
Lab of O on-line class (thanks, Kevin!).

Along the way (near the b&b) I saw 5 REDHEADS, about a dozen BUFFLEHEADS, 2
TUNDRA SWANS, 25 GOLDENEYES, 22 RINGNECKED DUCKS, and about 8 COMMON
MERGANSERS. I am certain there were other birds I did not count or see
very well.

The COMMON MERGANSERS were quite actively engaged in courtship display, and
it was fun to watch! They would circle about, stretch their necks upward
pointing their bills to the sky, dip down into the water and then cozy up
to a female while chasing away the competition. There was also much
flapping and splashing about. I couldn't hear if they were vocalizing,
however, from my perch above the cove.

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl at N. Montezuma

2011-03-11 Thread bob mcguire
I received this today from Frank Morlock, DEC office on Morgan Road:

On another note, we've got some great waterfowl counts up here at
Northern Montezuma the last couple days. Our ice broke gave way
before the Refuge's this year. Snow goose hunters will prob. shag a
lot of that away tomorrow, but hopefully they'll settle back in next
week. Good viewing from Morgan Rd., but the Best from Carncross.
High counts from the last 3 days:

NOPI - 5,000
MALL - 7000
ABDU - 300
CAGO - 10,000
NSHO - 10
RNDU - 25
AMWI - 61
TUSW/TRSW - over 400 (right now, and I'm heading that way to find out
what type and to do another count, but I'm guessing the maj. are TUSW)
SNGO - some really large flocks passing overhead, but only a couple
hundred have landed here in the fields.

A lot of birds are starting to gather at the 31 muck this morning, and
I'm guessing it's pretty great there right now.

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl count/Scott

2011-01-23 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

Yesterday Julie and I did the rather waterless Cortland County area for the
mid-winter waterfowl count.
Here's what we found. Considering it's Cortland County, we did quite nicely
with the Long-tailed Duck,
Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaups, Redhead, 3 Gadwalls and the A. Wigeon.

Canada Goose: 149
Mallard: 440
Am. Black Duck: 6
GADWALL: 3 (south end of Skan Lake)
AMERICAN WIGEON: 1 (Little York Lake outflow/Tio River west branch)
Redhead: 1 (south end of Skan Lake)
Ring-necked Duck: 1 (south end of Skan.Lake)
LESSER SCAUP: 2 (Little York Lake outflow/Tio River west branch)
LONG-TAILED DUCK (1 female south end of Skan. Lake)
Common Goldeneye : 85 (south end of Skan Lake)
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER (1 at south end of Skan Lake)
Common Merganser: 132 (65 at south end of Skan Lake)
Hooded Merganser: 23 (3 at south end of Skan Lake)

We did about 70 miles from Skan Lake down to Whitney Pt --we saw 3-4 BALD
EAGLES in the Cortland
to Marathon area Rte 11-- at least 2 were adults and a third one was a
4-5th year bird coming into
adult plumage. We had 15 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS on Houghton Hill Rd
Cortland, ~20 COMMON
REDPOLLS at the top of Glen Haven Rd Scott ( we had a few others in East
Homer as well), and some
AMERICAN ROBINS at the south end of Skan. Lake.

Here at the house in Scott the immature Female COOPER'S HAWK and adult male
SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK have chased away our redpolls that we had for about a week back near
Jan 1st. However, the
CAROLINA WREN, BROWN CREEPERS, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, FEMALE
PILEATED WOODPECKER and more all continue in the yard. The Pileated has
been coming into our suet
feeders for 3 years now and today for the first time we actually had it
hanging from our suet bag --
pretty amazing and cool to see such a big bird hanging from a suet bag..

One of the unheard stories from this winter IMO is the numbers of TREE
SPARROWS --on both CBC's we
did we had very large flocks in many areas, and I'd say this is the best
Tree Sparrow year in nearly 8-10
years. For the first time in 6 years we've had 4 A. TREE SPARROWS here at
the feeders in Scott since mid
December. On Friday we had our first ever wintering WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
at the feeders. Of
course we get them in migration, but they don't stick here at the feeders
in winter. Being in a hemlock
ravine, we have lots of Juncos every year though. As for sparrows feeding
at bird feeder perches, it's
not common, but it's far from rare as well. We always have juncos, and this
year the Tree Sparrows,
feeding at feeder perches. We even have Tree Sparrow occasionally feeding
at the thistle sacks.

cheers and stay warm,
Matt

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl raft SW Cayuga

2011-01-21 Thread Elaina McCartney
A large raft of waterfowl is swimming in from the north to the SW corner of
Cayuga, at the ice edge. They've been mostly absent for a couple days. I don’t
have time to count right now because I'm working—maybe before dusk.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl SW corner Cayuga Lake

2011-01-14 Thread Elaina McCartney
Apologies if you got this twice, I just "upgraded" to Outlook and no email went
out for a while.

Ice formed overnight, with the edge defining the location of a large milling
raft of waterfowl.Three Tundra Swans continue to cruise around, and were
spotted earlier snoozing near the ice edge with a Great Black-backed Gull
standing nearby. Counts submitted to ebird:

Canada Goose 290
Tundra Swan 3
Canvasback 180
Redhead 1470
Great Black-backed Gull 1
gull sp. 6
Mourning Dove 2
Red-bellied Woodpecker 2
Downy Woodpecker 2
Hairy Woodpecker 2
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Tufted Titmouse 1
White-breasted Nuthatch 2
Carolina Wren 2
Dark-eyed Junco 1
American Goldfinch 11

More waterfowl now seem to be merging from from the north.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl SW corner Cayuga Lake

2011-01-13 Thread Elaina McCartney
For those doing the waterfowl count who know my house, I've shoveled a path
down to the dock. The three Tundra Swans who have been hanging out just
north of Hog Hole all week just flew a bit to the north. The large raft of
Redheads, Canvasbacks and Canadas that I reported to e-bird yesterday have
moved a bit to the north today, on the west shore between Hog Hole and the
Yacht Club. There's still a group milling around just west of the red
lighthouse jetty, but I can't make out species in this light.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl raft

2010-02-16 Thread Elaina McCartney
A huge raft of waterfowl dominated by Redheads has persisted through
the GBBC in the 800 block of Taughannock Blvd. About 60 gulls just
joined a bit further out. Viewing conditions vary, but there are a
LOT of birds. A cat was skulking along the icy shore looking
wistfully at the gathering.
