I don’t want to start a teak war, but I have to agree with Rick – I’ve had to strip my handrails a few times, as it gets away from me, and now I do again. But I just couldn’t see putting SS rails on the boat. I could have whipped up some SS handrails overnight, but it just didn’t seem right. .

Do not apply heat to Stainless. Two things, if hot enough it will anneal it and make it dead soft with little of its former strength, and second, it will likely rust after you do. Stainless can be bent several times before it will break. We cold form all SS, it is simply the way it is done. One

If the collar came off, the quadrant would *Probably* keep if from falling through, but if it wasn’t cinched up tight on your shaft, it could slip. The Donut is like the thrust bearing which adjust the height & clearances, and without it the quadrant would be scrubbing on the top of the tube.
