Today I visited some reservoirs and assorted mudholes in Weld County with
Chuck Aid. Light rain accompanied us from 7:30 until 1:30 when it became
heavy rain and we called it. Highlights at Loloff Res, WCR 59 wetlands,
Lower Latham Res (s. side flooded field is setting up to be good shorebird

Between 4:00 and 4:45 today at Chatfield Reservoir I was fortunate to see a
Common, a Pacific, and a juv Yellow-billed Loon. Never expected that to happen,
maybe ever. But when we feed off of other’s reported sightings, it increases

and Sedgewick Counties to find some shoreline. Nearly every body of water

Cheraw.
Historically Lake Cheraw has been my best spot to see Snowy Plovers and
Western Sandpipers close-up along the north shoreline, and many

our first of the year Swainson's Hawk on Hwy 287 and then arriving at
Neenoshe Reservoir at 6:45 a.m. They've thinned and partially cleared the

this weekend I had 15 locations and 156 species, many which I didn't list
on COBirds but they were all run together in my hand-written checklists...I
ran out of time to better dissect it, but wanted people to know species
I tried to wait until all the good birders and birds had passed through SE
Colo before I visited, but I ran into a few of both this weekend anyway.
Highlights in the Carrizo and Cottonwood Canyon area (Baca County) were
Long-billed Curlew, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, skylarking Cassin's sparrow,
Tom Whitten and I had a productive trip to Weld County, covering some
ground and emptying a full tank of gas. Most of the day was high-velocity,
cold winds.
We searched numerous spots for Sharp-tailed Grouse and found two on CR111
1/2 mile north of CR128 (thanks Dave Leatherman). We found a

My house west of Larkspur in Douglas County is above the Plum Creek valley
floor, just under 7000' with ponderosa pine / gambel oak, below where it
starts to pitch upwards into higher ridges of the Pike National Forest
behind the neighborhood. I get some birds coming up from the plains-ish

At Ramah Reservoir yesterday (El Paso Co) there were six species of
Sandpipers, it took me over 2 hours of walking to find them all: I counted
8 Least, 4 Bairds, 6 Semi-palmated, 2 Pectoral, 2 Stilt, 1 Solitary. No
Spotted Sandpipers. Also four Black Terns. Dropped down
I visited Chatfield State Park from 1:00 to 2:30 today, didn't really dig
in but observed some slightly different things due to weather.
Douglas Co:
-Western Tanagers in high numbers, some flocking/feeding with Mountain
Bluebirds. An odd but nice visual combo.

Last winter after seeing how long-winded a Scoter was at S Platte Res (mine
was a Surf Scoter), I was also compelled to time it's dives. I was amazed
at the consistency, every dive I that timed was one minute, six seconds.
After about eight dives, I just walked away shaking my head, wondering

myself, John Drummond, and Jeannie Mitchell saw the Pomarine Jaeger at
Chatfield Reservoir (Douglas Co) from the rocky point by the

small cemetery on the E side. At 5:15 p.m. today a Greater Roadrunner
crossed the road, came back onto it, and went into the tall grass/weeds. It
then flew to an oil/gas road bordering a canal just behind the cemetery.
I was at Lake Hasty Campground (Bent County) yesterday morning and really
struggled with an ID but got a few photos in the rain/mist of a warbler to
work out later. It had a complete white eyering, no wingbars, dark gray on
top from head to tail, very yellow underneath all the way to what I
I visited Wray in Yuma County yesterday, birdy at 9 a.m. despite hot, dry,
slightly windy conditions. At Stalker Lake I had Warbling Vireo, Red-eyed

Crow Valley was quiet. Most trees budding, some not quite. In my view

After driving half the state twelve times for Lapland Longspur, I had one today
at 1:00 p.m. in the Chatfield State Park model airplane parking area (Douglas
Co) associating with Horned Larks.

On Tuesday 9-30 I drove to Adobe Creek Reservoir (Kiowa, Bent) and I echo
Duane's comments, I found very few shorebirds and figured that I must have
missed the prime habitat...also on my route, not much shoreline at Lake
Henry or Lake Meredith (Crowley). However the reason for my post in a year
Today 9-22 at 10:30 a.m. I had two Caspian Terns at Barr Lake (Adams).

Lake Gulch Rd. This is right before the entrance gate to Winkler Ranch, on
the south side of the road in the alfalfa fields. Some longtime birders
know of this location, I'm posting for those new to the area or new to
