The floodgates are open... but unfortunately, they are open all the way up
to Alberta/Saskatchewan over the next 6 hours and open to North Dakota over
the next 12 hours. So we should see some serious turnover of birds.

Yesterday and today in our South Ft. Collins backyard. Wow. Lazuli Buntings
in the birdbath. Three male Bullock's Orioles at our feeders, A Spotted
Towhee; Broad tail HB; several White Crowned Sparrows, Cassin's Finch still
hanging around!;and just now a Black-chinned HB in addition to our
While it seemed a majority of those actively birding today were previously
reported birds, I enjoyed the opportunity to get out to some spots in hopes
of coming across an eastern vagrant of my own.
I started the day down at *Chatfield *with a quick walk along the swim
beach in hopes of
This evening, a male Calliope is visiting feeders at our house, along with
multiple Broad-taileds and Black-chinneds.

Sure sounds possible for painted redstart. Size? Activity? What did the song
sound like, in "Petersonian" words?

Many years ago, when I worked for the Fish and Wildlife Service, I worked in
Federal Aid Division that handles the PR and DJ funds. If memory serves
correctly, the dollars are allocated based
upon the land area of the state (50%) and the number of paid hunting/fishing
licenses sold (50%).
At 4:00 today the Yellow-throated Warbler was in the same approximate area
- southeastern end of the lake, not far from the parking lot. If you go to
the left from the parking lot, with the reeds on your right and the main
path on your left, there is a green open area in the trees and it was

Any chance that you could forward the video? I’d love to see it. Painted is so
distinct that even poor video should be adequate. Amazing bird!
Thanks!

Hey Norm,
I originally found the bird in the little cove on the south end of the lake
yesterday. It then moved up into the forested area to the east and has been
traveling back and forth along the reservoir. So far, been seen by many
today after being re-found by Michael Lester. Hope you find

I saw my first Western Tanager of the season. In my yard just south of
Sedalia, off Highway 105, near West Plum Creek. Unfortunately I was working
in the yard near the bird feeders and scared it off. Still a treat to see
that brief blaze of yellow-orange-red!

I am assuming that it was then smaller than the nice Bullock's Oriole male that
we saw today at Cherry Creek State Park. It has lots of the orange you
described as well as white in the wing but don't think it has white on tail
edges. We also managed to see 7 Horned Grebes, still some White
I saw a bird today on the trail upstream 1/2 mile from the Kingfisher bridge
east of the Platte River at Chatfield reservoir. I have an absolutely horrible
video that shows the white edge tails and white on the wing. He had a bright
orange chest and abdomen.
I also had tried to take a
Little side information for you. The Roberston Pittman Act is where states
fish and game get their funding, states submit approved projects which are
approved by the Department of Interior. Then the states pay upfront the
cost and then are reimbursed 75% from the RPA and 25% comes from hunting
The Northern Waterthrush continues --seen 10 AM where 1st St crosses the
gulch. Not in the creek itself, but in a little wetland just north of the
street.
The Black-throated Blue Warbler, however, was apparently not seen today.

Hi Eric,
Great idea. I posted a question suggesting something similar to this to the
CPW contact page right before I saw your post here. Maybe we can all send
suggestions to the below page to try to rattle their cage? The $20 annual
fee that Maine has for this is a lot better than us

Hello Colorado Birders:
Many of us support wildlife conservation in a variety of ways but as a
whole (birding community), our birding activities are "free." Of course we
spend thousands of dollars doing what we love but we don't have a direct
fee/permit process to be doing what we love,
Bird is singing East of the trail about a mile from 7th St. and Gulch. There is
a covered picnic bench by the path. It is across the Gulch up hill in the
neighborhood.

My first of the year singing in upper Tucker Gulch. Recorded song. About 50 m
above a covered picnic table. High in a cottonwood. Go beyond where Cooper’s
are building a nest about 1/4 mile , cross bridge and creek. Vegetation opens
up. No Black-throated Blue Warbler this AM.

Last night at 7:30 pm, I found a male ay-breasted Warbler near the entrance of

on Cedar Valley Road.

I can support this. If enough birders participate, maybe we can convince
CPW that there are a lot more people interested in observing White-tailed
Ptarmigan than shooting them.
Maybe they'll introduce a "birding stamp"?
