It seems that OM and FSO apply different patches to the standard kernel so they behave a little different. At the moment i stick to OM kernels because they are build daily instead of FSO which build new kernels only in longer intervals. And as long as OM kernels work with the fso framework it is ok

Sounds like the usb network module isn't loaded. All newer kernels has these modules no more compiled into the kernel and maybe it was forgotten to add to the /etc/modules file in the actual FDOM version.
