When I say recording machine I mean the deck the tape was originally
recorded on, if it was not the same deck you're using for playback.

I've installed the Release Candidate 2 (BSOD) and the Release
Candidate 2 Refresh (no problems) on my AMD-based Presario. As I
said,
MS pulled it back from wide distribution because of a very limited set of
problems, but you can still get it here:

That sounds like McAfee's Site Advisor. It's a plug-in for IE and FF

version and of course, a paid-for version.
What I like about Site Advisor is the more info link presenting a

I have run Windows XP Network Setup Wizard on both computers, but I
Networking can be flaky. I've given up on it myself many times, only
to come back the next day and it's working fine. Don't forget you have
to share at least one folder.

I would like a larger screen and more than 4 shades of gray, but it looks
good for a version one product.
I hope the E-Ink technology makes it to laptops and eventually replaces
LCDs.

I connected the RCA-to-Stereo patch cable. The Line Input is active.
While I have that active, the tape deck is still not recognized. I
double-checked the positioning of the patch cable on, both, my sound
card and, the tape deck. I didn't find any problem with the positioning.
OK, one
Slight twist on this discussion. Does anyone know of a lab in the
DC/VA/MD region that would transfer a reel to CD and perhaps clean up
the sound (from an early 1960s recording)? I don't trust the sound
coming from my antique reel-to-reel Sony deck during playback.
I detest 'on-board' technology because, that leaves the user at the

There are probably lots of other things wrong with such a product and you
can't fix them all by buying this, that, and everything else as a

I don't like the UHER because of its' size.
Well, you're only going to use it once, that is to transfer these
tapes to digital. Using the assets on hand I don't see a whole
lot of other available options.
I await your report on the Revox, in the meantime I'll go back
to my cave.

No. The two little buttons under the faceplate and above the transport
