Of course, this is an absurd way to run an auction. No RL auction would ever take that $51 bid without asking for more. Seems like there should be a simple way to solve the problem via software, such as extending an auction if a bid is received within the last x seconds. EBay should pay you money

I think what you're missing is this: snipers would useless if everyone bid their maximum, but a lot of people don't. They just enter a bid that's a little higher than the current bid and come back later if they're outbid. So sniping is a way to use inefficiencies in the auction process to

Good points. I have participated in eBay auctions but the final sale price was NEVER what I would call reasonable. Sometimes the eBay price is 50% less. Those are happy buys. Recently I'm seeing much higher prices. Sometimes I thing the buyer would have been better off buying retail.
