[CGUYS] Windows 7, 32-bit or XP
It is time for a client of mine to get a new Computer. His adaptive keyboard works only with a 32-bit OS (Windows or Mac). His screen reader works only with windows. Thus I need to get a Windows computer running a 32-bit OS. With the adaptive software and hardware this computer is most likely going to cost $2k plus! When I look online to get prices all the Windows 7 computers say that they are 64-bit. How hard will be to get the 32-bit version? I could go with a computer running XP, but I'm afraid that that he would then he would start to run into problems a year or two down the road. Re: [CGUYS] Windows 7, 32-bit or XP
Tom, When I checked in the past, there were no plans to make a 64-bit driver. When I checked today I checked it today it stated: IntelliKeys USB does not currently support machines running 64-bit Operating Systems (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Snow Leopard), nor machines with multiple-core processors (unless additional processor cores are disabled). Solutions are currently being developed and will be available soon. I thought there was a 32-bit version of Windows 7. Was I mistaken? Why do you recommend waiting and going with the 64-bit? You need to wait for 64-bit drivers to become available. Can you make some minor improvements to the current setup to delay a major upgrade for a year? By then your adaptive hardware suppliers will probably have caught up with current tech requirements. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

My wife was looking at possibly getting wireless broadband from Sprint (her cell phone provider) for a trip this summer. She started to ask me about what was meant by 5GB of usage a month. I went to the web site and it stated 5GB/300MB off-network roaming per month I assume that this means 5GB of upload and 300MB of download per month. If I am correct this should be fine for her. I had to contact SuperPages.com last week because a random message told me that I needed a newer version of IE--IE was discontinued for Macs years ago--or else I couldn't view their maps. Masking browser ID and OS has been necessary for Mac users since we figured out how to do it a dozen years ago. It's built into Safari, Opera, iCab, and a simple add-on in Mozilla browsers. Re: [CGUYS] Wither the newsmag?
Much of what Tom saw about IT in the publishing business, I have seen in my own work environment (a county government agency). One such example: The IT department is proud of the fact that they have convinced school age section of our agency to abandon it's Mac for Windows machines. They say it will be easier if they (the students) don't have to to learn a new OS when they come to the adult program. I work in the adult program and have never had a client who had that problem. (I've been working with Adults computers for over 12 years - longer than anyone has been working in our IT dept.) I personally believe that person should know the basics of at least two OS. Much of it carries over from one to the other. Steve t.piwowar wrote: On May 25, 2009, at 6:08 PM, Jeff Wright wrote: Now you're just making things up. Of course, because I specialize in working with the publishing industry, by WFB rules I'm disqualified. Perhaps a new slogan for M$: only the ignorant need apply. Several newspapers and magazines that are household names are/were my clients. I observed and assisted with their move to computerized production. In the early days I watched their existing staff take to the new technology with great enthusiasm. Getting the computer part right was not hard, they were buying Macintoshes and developing systems for themselves. Since they knew the business they knew what needed to be done and they did it. It was a golden age. Then I watched management get sold on the idea that IT professionals could do the job so much better. The publishing professionals were told to butt out. The IT professionals announced that Macs were toys and that real IT was done with PCs. I started getting calls from the publishing professionals screaming for help. The IT professionals were tossing out stuff that worked while putting in stuff that required huge effort to use. The IT pros even started turning away advertisers who were sending them Mac files. Their new systems would not work with nonstandard files and, of course, it was not PC style to interoperate. Productivity dropped, costs rose. The IT pros convinced management that the problem was all those publishing people on the staff. Management started cutting the people who knew about publishing and the ranks of the IT pros swelled because it was a lot of work to maintain their crummy IT systems. Management was terrified that everything could quickly collapse if the IT beast was not constantly fed. On the other hand forcing a popular columnist to retire early would not have such an instantly terrifying impact. So they kept trimming and trimming and trimming -- the soul of their enterprise gradually vanished. Then the web came along and the IT pros had an even easier time convincing management that it was all about computers. They claimed that everything would be automated. They told management that it was all about data entry and coding everything in XML. Then computers would then rewrite the data into multiple streams. Doing hardly any work the computers would produce a newspaper, a news magazine, specialized newsletters, and websites. Huge profits would roll in and nobody would be the wiser. There was only one problem: the IT professionals did not know what the hell they were talking about. Management now reaps the whirlwind. Conveniently they blame the economy. Bad managers always do. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Chris, I may not be a doctor, but take a chill pill. I see the discussion as to the differences between service and which service is right for you. My brother is having a problem with his Appleworks program. He is running it on an eMac with OS 10.3.9. The problem may have started after he tried to fix somethings with Norton. This is the problem: when you launch Appleworks, you get the menus across the top, a blank toolbar, and no document or starting points. If you go to choose an item from the menu, you get the spinning beach ball before you can choose anything. When you go to the Appleworks icon in the dock, click and hold on it you get application not responding and have to choose Force Quit to end it. I tried to reinstall it, but the problem remained (before this install, I removed the file/application from the Application Folder). I assume that I need to remove some or all of the other Appleworks program files, not just the Application. How do I do this? Any other advice in solving this problem would be welcome. I got my wife a netbook in January, for use when we travel. Her needs are light: e-mail (Eudora), mostly reading, surfing (FireFox), and some games, mostly card games, but none graphic intensive. We first got an Acer of some description, but it would not run on battery, and its wireless switch was flakey. So we took that back and got an HP 1000. A very nice, solid little 'book. She had a little trouble typing as the keyboard is smaller, but she doesn't have to type that much for her use. It comes with Windows XP, 1GB RAM, a built-in Webcam. It has two USB ports, no optical drive, a 60GB HDD, and WiFi (G) that is switchable on and off. Our son-in-law gave her a travel mouse to use, so the awkward placement of the mouse buttons on either SIDE of the trackpad hasn't been an issue for her. We have used a thumb drive and networking to copy files to/from her netbook. We have not tried printing from it, but I see no reason it wouldn't work. The power cord has the wall wart in the middle of the cord, rather than at the plug end. It makes for a rather bulky package when trying to pack it up, but we are able to get into a small zipper bag along with the netbook and the mouse. I find it a very nice machine, for her needs. The shorter screen (1024x600) took a little getting used to, but hasn't been much problem. It seems well-built. I can't comment on battery life as we don't run on battery that much, but I don't think it is very long, given the small size. I recommend trying one out; we got hers at Costco, and they have always had one on display whenever we've gone in. We paid $450, but they are now down to $400. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] shared printer
Art, Thanks. I'm a Linux newbie! However, it does not see it. What should I do now? Thanks, Steve Art Clemons wrote: I have a shared printer (Brother HL 2040) on my home network. My Macs can print to it with no problem. I have just added a Linux machine (Fedora 10) to the network. It can see the printer but can't print to it. I believe that this is because it does not have the print driver. Is there a way that I could find a driver that would work or is there some other work around? The printer is attached to my iMac running 10.4.11 Thanks, Assuming you're running cups and have the cups daemon running, try opening http://localhost:631 in the browser of your choice. After the webpage opens, select Administration then Find New Printers. A word of warning, it's likely to ask you for the user and password, easiest solution is to use root and the root password otherwise as the superuser you'll have to add your user to a group authorized to administer Cups. If it sees it, select Brother and then the HL2060 driver. Then tell cups to add the printer as configured. It prints slightly off center horizontally which can be corrected once the printer is working reliably. http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-2040 details how to align the horizontal axis. Incidentally, the HL-2040 and HL-2070 also can use the HP Laserjet PCL 6 cups driver too, but the 2060 driver works better for the 2040, while the 1250 driver works better for the HL-2070.
