You mean there's a wired satellite provider? Wow! Actually, I too wondered about this FCC reg when it came out. Now, after a few years, I think we can clearly see the FCC has lost and the HOA's have won. Remember, this isn't a law, it's just an FCC directive. As with you, I could be mistaken. Actually, most folks in neighborhoods with such covenant restrictions have TV services that are provided by satellites, cable or other systems that do not require antennas for end-user reception. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Does anyone know if manufacturers are doing anything to solve the synch problem in the next generations of TV's? Or is this a bug that's inherent in the system, and for which there is no practical bugfix? We have an analog TV that's on its last legs, and we're planning to replace it with digital. Is there any point in waiting until the technology gets better? Eric - Want an antenna on the roof? Move to Tehran, http://www.iranian.com/Arts/2003/September/People/index.html, or tell the Super that he/she has to allow you to put one up. Better yet, find a friendly neighbor with a window that faces toward Houston and buy a dish with dual LNBs, http://endlessinnovation.typepad.com/endless_innovation/2007/07/pimp-my-satelli.html, and get a two-room contract. I've seen many apartment buildings like this, although not as well pimped. You could do the same with a friendly neighbor or super and an antenna for digital TV reception. Betty Eric S. Think very dense buildings. No possibility here of a satellite shot, I can't see the southern horizon at the requred angle. It's basically cable or no reception at all, at the present time. I could possibly talk the apartment people into letting me deploy an antenna array on the roof. That would be somewhat unlikely. However it could be done. They would likely want some compensation for this and it might involve some remodeling, principally drilling holes in the outside wall and stringing cables outside the building. No, on reflection, they probably won't go for it. For that matter, digital signals in general are problematic if you're getting your TV over the air, without a cable or satellite hookup. The signals are more directional, so you have to have the antenna pointed EXACTLY the right way for each channel, or you're out of luck. The signals are also effectively weaker; and when you're trying to tune your set or move your antenna to get the signal, it can switch from being on to being off, without the intermediate state you often get now, when the signal degrades but doesn't quite vanish when you're adjusting things. (I go through enough gymnastics already, trying to adjust a small booster antenna in just the right direction to get even marginal signals on some stations.) My brother (who designs radio transmitters) and I were trying to explain all this to another relative, who hadn't heard anything about the death of analog and who was outraged that, in spite of the supposed improvements of digital TV, what she was going to get (post-conversion) was a lot worse than what she has now. Unless, of course, she pays a lot of money (for a new TV or conversion box, or cable, or a satellite dish, etc.) And she'll have these extra expenses just to get free commercial-ridden network TV, and public television which she has already paid for in taxes and pledges. I think to her the conversion sounds a lot like Let them eat cake, or maybe There's one [sucker] born every minute, and I can't entirely disagree with her. --Constance Warner QUOTE: It is my understanding that in some parts of the country there will be no signal or only patchy signals available if the phones are switched from analog to digital. It gets worse than that. I live only 12-15 miles from the transmitters and get a great signal (95% +), ... until the occasional reflection wipes out the signal temporarily. Out of the 20 DTV channels available, I can only get 4 on a dependable basis. In order to get the others, I will need to buy yet another antenna that is more directional than the omni-directional one I purchased specifically for these signals. The fun continues... Richard P. And the sales of rotators will soar. Don't know about that one. Would I actually invest in a steerable antenna array when I all ready have cable? Probably not, but if I were far from an ATSC signal I might. If I had to. As it is I can't get ANY over the air transmissions with any reliability, I live in an apartment building among others and its basically a shutout, FM radio is receivable but not what I'd call reliable. But I'd love to have an antenna mast on the roof. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Just a silly observation: future???
You might be right, that manufacturers have a date to stop manufacturing analog TVs, but I thought that the end date referred to the broadcasting of commercial analog TV. That date is on February 17, 2009. The manufacturers would not make many analog TVs after that date even if there is no restrictive law since the market would be small and they would be competing with so many used TV sales. Rev. So how do you tell if you have a digital ready TV? I have quite a few TVs (7) one of which is also on it's last legs. It is 15-20 years old and assume it's not digital. My newest is a Sylvania 27 stereo with VCR and DVD recorder. I assume it is digital, but nothing in the paper work told me this. Jeff M On Jan 2, 2008, at 2:48 PM, Rev. Re: [CGUYS] Just a silly observation: future???
This question is answered at http://www.dtv.gov/consumercorner.html#faq8 It says therein: *How do I know if I already have a digital TV (DTV)?* Many DTVs and digital television equipment will have labels or markings on them, or statements in the informational materials that came with them, to indicate that they contain digital tuners. These labels or markings may contain the words “Integrated Digital Tuner,” “Digital Tuner Built-In,” “Digital Receiver,” or “Digital Tuner,” “DTV,” “ATSC,” or “HDTV” (High Definition television). If your television equipment contains any of these labels or markings, you should be able to view digital over-the-air programming without the need for a digital-to-analog converter box. (Remember, you do not need an HDTV to view free over-the-air digital programming. As long as your television equipment contains a digital tuner, you can view over-the-air digital. An HDTV is only necessary if you want to view High Definition programming in full HD quality.) You should also check the manual or any other materials that came with your television equipment in order to determine whether it contains a digital tuner. If your television set is labeled as a “Digital Monitor” or “HDTV Monitor,” or as “Digital Ready” or “HDTV Ready,” this does not mean it actually contains a digital tuner. Thus, you still will likely need a separate set-top box which contains a digital tuner in order to view over-the-air digital programming. Over-the-air digital set-top boxes for Digital or HD “Monitors” can be purchased at retail stores. Cable and satellite TV providers also sell or lease digital set-top boxes for their specific services. (Note: the digital set-top box described here is not the same as the digital-to-analog converter box, described above, used to convert free over-the-air digital broadcasts for viewing on an analog TV set.) If your television set is labeled as “analog” or “NTSC,” and is NOT labeled as containing a digital tuner, it contains an analog tuner only. If you cannot determine whether your television set or other television equipment contains a digital tuner, you are advised to check your equipment for the manufacturer name and model number, and then contact your consumer electronics retailer, or the manufacturer, to determine whether it contains a digital tuner. This information also may be available online through the manufacturer’s website. Because most broadcast stations in all U.S. television markets are already broadcasting in digital, consumers can watch DTV today. You can contact your local broadcast stations to determine the channel numbers on which the stations are currently broadcasting digital programming. You should then ensure that your television is set up to receive over-the-air programming (as distinguished from being connected to a paid provider such as cable or satellite TV service), and then tune to the over-the-air digital channels to see if your set can receive the digital broadcast programming. Re: [CGUYS] Just a silly observation: future???
Dates for analog phones, onstar and the like (even some automatic garaqe doors) is February 18/19, 2008 and for broadcasting is February 19, 2009. After 2/2009, one will need a box to run an analog TV. This was part of the coupon discussion earlier. Fox5 (DC) now has a link on their site to download the coupon. Direct link: http://www.myfoxdc.com/myfox/pages/InsideFox/SeenOnTV?pageId=5.7 Coupon direct link: https://www.dtv2009.gov/ And from the Fox 5 site: TV Converter Box Coupon Program Website As you may well know, by Feburary of 2009, all TV stations will be broadcast Digitally and if you get your TV though an antenna you'll no longer receive a picture without a converter box. And to help, the government is giving away coupons! To request a coupon, consumers can apply online at http://www.dtv2009.gov starting Tuesday. The government also has set up a 24-hour hotline to take requests, 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). Go there, sign up for a coupon, get 40 dollars from the govt. to buy a converter box. And they're going on the honor system. So even if you have satellite or Cable, you can still sign up to get a coupon. /gayley Robert wrote: You might be right, that manufacturers have a date to stop manufacturing analog TVs, but I thought that the end date referred to the broadcasting of commercial analog TV.
