Hi Amy: Bake it in the oven at dg350 and I think it's a 9 by 13 cake pan. You can put wax paper or parchment down so it won't stick; give it a spray with cooking spray, not too much. Good luck. -Original Message- From: Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark-boun...@acbradio.org] On Behalf Of Amy E. Or the specially designed Cake 'N Bake pan to fit The Rival crockpot. I had one until all my stuff was stolen from me In 1992 by an ex who did not care about me in the end. He abandoned me in a town I hated to live in, and it took me A number of years to come back to California. But, I digress ... Better stay on topic. I never did anything in a coffee can, though. Not many brands of coffee comes in metal cans anymore that I have seen lately. Re: [CnD] slow cooking
Good morning: My favorite two things to cook in my slow cooker are, taco soup, and pork butt roast. For the roast, I put just a little oil on it, and make a rub of cumin, chili powder, garlic, and paprika, and of course salt. Depending on how big the roast is, I cook it for 6 to 8 hours. When it cools a little, I shred it up and throw it in the oven at dg400 for about 20 to 30 minutes. It browns up and get a little crispy; not the healthiest meal, but it sure tastes good. It makes a lot too. For the taco soup: This is such a diverse recipe that you can do almost anything to it and it will be good. I either use cooked shredded chicken, two large cans of pinto beans, 1 large can of tomatosauce, two envelopes of Lowrey's taco seasoning. If I used ground beef, I cook that up with some onion and garlic. Throw everything in the crock pot and cook on low. Top it with tortilla chips, guac, or avocado, onion, cheese, etc. Anything you would put on a taco, even lettuce and tomato if you want. Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday! -Original Message- From: Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark-boun...@acbradio.org] On Behalf Of Gregory Yorke via Cookinginthedark Sent: Sunday, February 23, 2020 7:45 AM To: cookinginthedark@acbradio.org Cc: gyo...@verizon.net Subject: [CnD] slow cooking So much as gone back and forth about crock pots in the past few days, I could not resist putting a sirloin tip roast in my crock pot this morning along with carrots, potatoes, onions, fresh garlic, and some spices, with a cup of V8 juice. I'll look for those liners. The ones designed for crockpots are useful when you want something to cook in its own juices but not dry out. Also useful for dinners you want to prepare the night before and put into the crock in the morning to cook. In that case, you put the bag in the crock, fill it, tie it closed, remove it to a metal pan or plastic storage container to your refrigerator overnight, have your crockpot ready to receive it in the morning and go to bed. In the morning you remove the plastic bag to the crock, turn the pot on and let it do its thing. This way you don't put a cold crock into the pot, where it could heat too quickly and break, causing possible injury and creating a mess you really don't want to have to clean up after. That said, I have been known to put my cold crock into the pot when leaving it turned on low for the day. I would never do it though if I had a crockpot with a bottom rather than a side cooking element. I've never had a problem leaving my crock pot on while I was not home. That's the beauty of it. I use it for all sorts of things, but I especially like cooking baked beans in it. It frees up my oven and I can cook 2 1/2 pound at a time. They freeze very well if there are left overs. Just posted the Crock Pot Pizza recipe. I'll have to construct the chex mix recipe from other recipes, as I use a definite variation on the recipes I've got. Re: [CnD] Slow cooking
The liners are like plastic bags, like the roasting bags made for use in your conventional oven, mostly used for roasts or turkey so it stays moist in the oven. Re: [CnD] Slow cooking
Crock Pot liners are plastic bags that can handle the heat in a slow cooker. You put the liner in, and that makes clean-up a snap, as no food comes in contact with the crock. They don't affect cooking time or temperature to any definable amount, so they're also neutral. I also like them because I can prepare a meal the night before and start it early in the morning, whereas I can't do that without them because you never take a removable crock from the fridge to the heating unit without letting it reach room temperature first. (the temperature change will run the risk of shattering the crock) I find them at most grocery stores, and the one challenge I have is differentiating them from the oven roasting bags I've got. There are other things they do very well that aren't cooked all day and aren't soup/stew items. Two of my favorites are making my own "Trash" (Now more commonly known as Chex Mix) and the amazing Crock Pot Pizza recipe I found on a BBS years ago. The Trash recipe involves an open crock, while the pizza recipe only takes about an hour and a half to melt the cheese and warm the meats and other toppings. Re: [CnD] Slow cooking
They come in two sizes larger one is for 6 quart crockpots. You get a box that appears to have plastic bags in it. Open one up and line crockpot with it then put your food in the liner and cook. When finished allow food to cool to safe handling temperature then lift the liner up from all of the edges of the pot and hold it together and lift the liner out of the pot. The pot stays clean and you need to figure out what container to empty the liner into so the food can be eaten. >From what I understand, each of those liners is single use. Take a small appliance to a vocational technical high school to the electronics course, you'll probably get the repair done and the student who does it will get a grade for that repair. The teacher likely will inspect the repair before you get the item returned too. That's a teaching opportunity for those students. You might want to look into that when need arises and you get a chance. I still have my old crock pot from the mid 1970's. I broke the glass lid and can not find another one to fit it. I remember that the first ones were not removable. They were a pain to clean. Then shortly later the removable ones came around. -Original Message- From: Cookinginthedark On Behalf Of Nicole Massey via Cookinginthedark Sent: Friday, February 21, 2020 5:55 PM To: cookinginthedark@acbradio.org Cc: Nicole Massey Subject: Re: [CnD] Slow cooking I've got two of the original Rival Crock Pots, both of which still work, though I only use them with liners these days because otherwise they're a nightmare to clean. Or makea ministroni soup? -Original Message- From: Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark-boun...@acbradio.org] On Behalf Of Marie Rudys via Cookinginthedark Sent: Friday, February 21, 2020 12:41 PM To: cookinginthedark@acbradio.org Cc: Marie Rudys Subject: [CnD] Slow cooking Good afternoon, everyone!! Now I think of it, it shouldn't hurt anything to slice up some potatoes after they're cleaned but with peels left on and put them into the pot on top of the steaks. If the potatoes get thoroughly cooked through, you can make mashed potatoes in the pot once the steaks get removed and have the potatoes with the gravy and onions along with those steaks. That's good. Beans don't like me, and I have Trouble with the kind you have to cook and soak a long time. I was not raised on them, so I guess that figures. For some reason, I can eat those Italian cannellini beans without any Problems. Maybe because they are already prepared and I just drain the can and add them to my kind of bean dish. You know, this triggered a memory for me.My grandma was a cook in a hospital in Nebraska in the fifties. I remember that she would say that she added coffee to gravies to make them more rich, and a little coffee and cinnamon to her chocolate cakes to bring out the flavor. She was the best cook ever in my mind. This is a great memory for me. [CnD] slow cooking a whole chicken
Hi everyone, I have a small whole chicken I want to cook. I realize there are many recipes for oven roasted chicken. My past experience results in the outside might have a bit of seasoned taste but the meat itself is bland and the white meat is very dry. The crockpot seems like the best option. Re: [CnD] slow cooking a whole chicken
Nancy, I've never cooked a whole chicken this way, but have done it with small turkey's and it works great. I use roasting bags that you can get at the grocery store. You just season the bird with whatever seasonings you choose and put the whole thing into the roasting bag. It's amazing how well the bag does in keeping the moisture in the meat. The two turkey's I did this way were the best ones I've ever had. When you purchase the bags they will have the cooking times listed based on how many pounds the chicken is. Re: [CnD] slow cooking a whole chicken
Hi Nancy, When I have made a chicken in the C.P. I will take a handful of seasoning mix of my choice, lift the skin and rub the seasoning between the flesh and the skin of the bird. I then dice up celery, onions, and carrots and put that mixture in the cavity of the bird. I then rub a small amount of olive oil over the skin and rub more seasoning over the body of the whole chicken. I ball up about 5 pieces of foil and place those at the bottom of my C.P. I place the chicken on top breast side down and turn my crockpot on high and cook the bird between 4 and 5 hours. I generally start checking the temperature at 4 and keep checking until the white meat is 165 degrees. You need no other liquids and you have to turn your C.P. on high otherwise the chicken will not turn out. I hope this helps. Is there something else to use for those of us who don't let aluminum contact our food? -Original Message- From: Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark-boun...@acbradio.org] On Behalf Of Becky Griffith Sent: Thursday, February 07, 2013 3:43 PM To: cookinginthedark@acbradio.org Subject: Re: [CnD] slow cooking a whole chicken Hi Nancy, When I have made a chicken in the C.P.
