Private or reserved IP addresses are nothing sinister.  They are addresses
that have been set aside by IANA for personal-use IP networks in a home or
office.   Network admins can use these addresses for machines that are not
going to be accessible to a public network, such as the Internet.  This
slows the depletion of valid IP addresses and allows users to set up
personal-use IP networks without having to purchase an IP address range.

EXCERPT
Gender studies and feminist theory have been involved in a debate for some time
now over the meaning of gender and sex, the very character of gender and sex.
Divided roughly into camps of "essentialists" versus "social constructionists,"
the debate parallels older realist and idealist battles. The essentialist
position may be oversimplified this way: some core, objective property
(typically understood as biological or biopsychological) defines what it means
to be a woman or a man, and the categories of male and female are thus culture-
independent and mind-independent "natural" kinds. The social constructionist
position may be oversimplified this way: the categories of male, female, man,
and woman are not "natural" kinds but are rather culturally constructed ideals
irreducible to biological or psychological properties, which change
demonstrably in meaning and practice over time and across cultures.

The political outcome of these positions is that essentialists tend to view
gender differences as innate and immutable, closed to modification at some
fundamental level by education, parenting, or ideological movements, with some
basic differences in gender roles pragmatically and objectively justified.
Social constructionists tend to view gender differences as created, learned,
and alterable, with gender role divisions always historically relative,
contingent, and ultimately unwarranted by appeal to an objective reality
outside human culture. While both sides of this debate can marshal compelling
evidence for their general claims, neither is unassailable. The dominant
criticism of essentialism is that it does not account for actual observed
variability in these "natural" categories and ignores a tremendous amount of
conceptual fuzziness and empirical counterexample in its biologistic
definitions. The dominant criticism of social constructionism is that it simply
seems to rule out any influences of the physical body on behavior, social
categories, and self-concepts, treating human beings as if they were all only
pure minds, exempt from the biological and evolutionary forces that constrain
all other organisms.

Irrespective of the theoretical merits of these two positions, technology
threatens or promises to circumvent the political heart of the debate by
altering the connection between the premises and conclusions of both sides.
Essentialists move from the belief that sex and gender differences are hard-
wired, largely immutable, and socially valuable to the conclusion that attempts
to ignore or eradicate them are futile, harmful, and sexually confusing. Social
constructionists move from the belief that sex and gender differences are
culturally produced and often socially detrimental to the conclusion that they
can be radically altered for the better through education, legal reform, and
improved theoretical understanding.

But for these moves, both sides depend on the assumption that "biological"
equals "immutable" and technology increasingly erodes that assumption. Taking
seriously the essentialist idea that gender identity, behavior, or
cognitive and personality traits may be sex-linked physical characteristics of
the body does not mean that these things are fixed. "Genetic," "biological,"
and "bodily" do not imply "unchangeable." Even if doubtful of the simplified
social constructionist claims that sex and gender are categories unconstrained
by objective, empirical bodily facts, technology can nonetheless allow us to
alter the body in such ways that gender's "naturalness" or "reality" no longer

Bible History: Only Myths?

There was no exodus from Egypt, Joshua didn't bring down the walls of
Jericho, and Solomon's kingdom was a small, tribal dynasty, an Israeli
archaeologist says in a new article.

Colleagues and critics accepted some of Zeev Herzog's evidence, but warned
that by targeting the accuracy of the Bible the research undermines the
national myths that are the basis of Jewish claims to the land of Israel.

Archaeological findings do not support and in many cases directly contradict
Biblical stories describing the birth of the Jewish people, Herzog of Tel
Aviv University writes in Thursday's Haaretz daily.

He reviews evidence now commonly accepted by most archaeologists showing
that there was no exodus from Egypt at the time the Bible says Jews left
Egypt en masse, and that Jericho fell in stages over an extended period and
not in a single raid led by Joshua.

More controversially, Herzog argues that the seeds of the Jewish state are
to be found in the 9th century B.C. when groups of shepherds who had settled
in hilltops established two rival states, Judah and Israel.

Excavations of cities from the supposedly majestic time of Kings David and
Solomon a century earlier, he says, reveal that the ''cities'' consisted of
scattered buildings and the kingdoms were small, provincial dynasties that
exercised no real claim over the land.

Herzog says Jerusalem, the majestic capital built by King David to rule over
a large empire, was at best a small fiefdom.

Fellow archaeologist Amnon Ben-Tor of the rival Hebrew University, a top
critic of Herzog and his post-modernist school of thought, says Herzog uses
archaeology to satisfy a political agenda, namely debunking the legends upon
which the Jewish state was founded.

Ben-Tor agrees that "there is a large measure of glorification in the
Bible," but says that inscriptions and excavations from the 10th century
B.C. show the ancient Hebrews had established a state ruled by David and
Solomon that was substantial, if not ma gnificent.

Herzog's article addressed archaeological discoveries from the last few
decades, when archaeologists in Israel broke away from seeking out physical
evidence for Biblical events.

Liberal Education Minister Yossi Sarid, who recently stirred controversy by
expunging from textbooks what he says are myths of modern Israeli history,
says Herzog's work deserves consideration.

"If it's interesting and well-founded, I don't see why it shouldn't be
presented in schools as an option," he tells Haaretz.

the Nuclear Abolition Coalition by Proposition One for such a
transcontinental peacewalk to begin the new millennium by uniting all
survival issue messages and activists behind this goal of global nuclear
abolition and in support of the prayer for "Global Peace Now!" as a
universal human resolve.   This call was accepted by Rev. Yusen Yamato who
initiated the Global Peace Walk project with its walk from New York to San
Francisco for the United Nations 50th anniversary in 1995.  Rev. Yamato, a
Zen Buddhist Monk from Japan living in San Francisco for over 20years, has

Dear Nuclear Abolition Workers,

Although my wife, Ellen, is an occasional contributor, I personally, had
refrained from posting anything to this group for at least a year, maybe
two.  Several days ago I broke my cyber silence to reply to Alyn Ware's
comments on a "Proposal to Build a Grassroots Movement to Pressure the U.S.
Political System for Nuclear Weapons Abolition."  Central to this proposal
was Eleanor Holmes Norton's Nuclear Disarmament and Economic Conversion Act
(H.R. 2545)

Initially, I submitted this proposal to the October, 1998 Abolition 2000
conference in Chicago in response to an open invitation from David
Cortwright for "concrete proposals that can take various political forms:
legislative vehicles, platforms for presidential candidates, and
propositions for ballot support and petitioning."  As I understand it, the
main topic at the October meeting was whether or not to change the name of
Abolition 2000, so there was no time for discussing any "concrete
proposals."

The proposal was re-submitted to the January, 1999 Abolition 2000
conference.  Again, or so I've been told, was primarily about the name
change, and, again, there was no time to consider "concrete proposals."
Earlier this month Ellen was able to attend the recent conference in Ann
Arbor, where she circulated the exact same proposal, slightly updated to
reflect changes on the political scene since the original submission.
Unfortunately, Ellen tells me, although several individuals expressed
interest in the idea, the group as a whole hadn't time to give it any
serious consideration.

While Ellen was in Ann Arbor, I sent a copy of the proposal to David
Williams via private e-mail.   Unbeknownst to me, on October 8th David
forwarded my private e-mail -- very poorly formatted -- to this group.  On
October 23rd Alyn Ware posted some thoughtful comments concerning the
proposal to this list.  On October 27th I responded, point by point, to
Alyn's comments, and posted my response before Ellen had read it.  After
reading it, Ellen was very disappointed by my comment, "rather than play
patty cake with a bunch of wingnut congresspeople, I'd prefer to encourage
them to change their perspective of reality."  This disturbed her for two
reasons.  First, because of her deep respect for Alyn, she was concerned
that he might take it personally.  Second, because of the nature of this
group, she felt that any valid points I may have made might have been
summarily ignored simply because my comment could have been construed as
rudeness.

First, because Alyn has apparently dropped the debate, I fear Ellen might
be correct in thinking that I've insulted him.  Therefore, I apologize to
Alyn if he took my comment personally.  I certainly did not intend to
insult him, nor did I intend to imply that he was playing patty cake.  To
the best of my knowledge (with the exception of Adam Phillips, Anabel
Dwyer, and Alan and Odile Haber, Bob Tiller, Fran Tepliz, and Mary Olsen,
another apology if I overlooked anyone), Alyn is the only person on this
list who has ever done anything substantial to support this particular idea
for disarmament and conversion.  Additionally, other than Peter Weiss, Alyn
is the only person who has had the common decency to even bother to address
the idea in writing.  Finally, Alyn was instrumental in the most, in my
opinion, practical accomplishment in the history of nuclear disarmament.

New study shows link between sex and violence among N.C. high school males

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - High school males who have been involved in a
pregnancy are more likely to engage in behaviors that increase their risk of
injury or death, according to a new report titled, "North Carolina
Adolescent Males: Linking High Risk Behavior."

These same males are more likely to fight, carry a weapon to school, attempt
suicide, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and use illegal substances, said
the report's author, Robert H. DuRant, Ph.D., vice-chair for Health Services
Research for the Department of Pediatrics at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center and director of the Brenner Center for Child and Adolescent
Health.

In 1997, 40.5 percent of sexually experienced males who carried a gun to
school had been involved in a pregnancy, while only 13.2 percent of non-gun
carriers had been involved in a pregnancy, according to the report. Also, 27
percent of males who had been in six or more fights in the last year had
also been involved in a pregnancy
.
"This data is not meant to imply that violent behavior causes pregnancy or
vice versa," DuRant said. "It shows that health risk behaviors co-occur and
that we must address and focus on a full range of behaviors to make an
impact."

The report was written by DuRant for the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention
Coalition of North Carolina, a statewide, United Way agency whose mission is
to prevent teen pregnancy. The coalition works with public officials,
reports data and research on a wide range of adolescent health issues and
conducts training programs for those working directly with teens. This year
the coalition is focusing on adolescent males.

"Apart from the efforts by the coalition, there have not been many programs
that focus on the high school male," said DuRant, who is also a board member
of the coalition. "Most of the sex education is targeted to females and is
knowledge-based as opposed to using a skills building approach. For example,
we need to teach children about certain high-risk behaviors, but we also
need to teach them how to effectively communicate and negotiate their way
out of a dangerous situation. We also need to teach them how to avoid the
situation in the first place. Just providing knowledge-based education does
not have a positive effect on reducing high-risk behaviors."

Other data in the report showed:

*   In 1995, 18.3 percent of males who had drunk alcohol 10 or more
times in the previous 30 days had been involved in a pregnancy, compared to
3.4 percent of males who did not drink.
*   In 1995, between 33.3 and 67.7 percent of males with two or more
suicide attempts in the previous year had also been involved in a pregnancy.

*   In 1995, between 16 and 26.3 percent of males who smoked marijuana
20 one or more times in the previous 30 days reported past pregnancy
involvement.
*   In 1997, 16.9 percent of males who had smoked cigarettes on 10 or
more of the previous 30 days had also been involved in a pregnancy.

"The data show that there is a 38 percent increase in male pregnancy
involvement from 1995 to 1997," DuRant said. "This reinforces to me that we
need to work with the whole teen, addressing all key problem behaviors to be
successful in reducing pregnancy and overall teen high-risk behaviors."

Researcher Claims Power Tech That Defies Quantum Theory

By ERIK BAARD NEW YORK -- A researcher based in New Jersey is presenting
to a gathering of chemists in Ontario, Calif., Wednesday the science that
he says will underpin a multi-billion dollar energy and materials company.

The catch is that his theory - that hydrogen atoms can be shrunk in a
stable form - is an impossibility in the established understanding of
quantum physics. Still, Dr. Randell Mills, a Harvard University-trained
medical doctor who has done postgraduate studies in physics and chemistry,
isn't going it alone. His start-up, BlackLight Power Inc. of Cranbury, New
Jersey, has received support and advice from utilities Conectiv (CIV) and
PacifiCorp (PPW) and from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. (MWD). Other
major companies are waiting in the wings, Dr. Mills claimed.

"We have stayed supportive of this in the face of fairly significant
scientists saying it can't be," a senior executive with Morgan Stanley
Dean Witter, who asked that he not be identified, told Dow Jones
Newswires. Pending further verification and commercial commitments, Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter plans to usher BlackLight Power to an initial public
offering within two years, the executive said. The investment bank will be
an underwriter and hasn't put its own money into the start-up, the
executive said, but another source close to the situation said Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter had made an overture to that end.

Dr. Mills claimed the process of transforming hydrogen atoms into smaller
"hydrinos" by chemical catalysis will provide "a virtually unlimited
supply of energy" through distributed power turbines. The hydrinos
themselves combine with other elements, he said, to make compounds that
could be the basis for batteries to power cars 1,000 miles at highway
speeds before recharging; a plastic that conducts electricity and shares
magnetic qualities with iron; and super-strong coatings, among other
things. There could be "potentially thousands, if not millions" of novel
compounds, he said. He also said that compounds such as the ones
BlackLight Power is creating account for the more than 90% of the mass of
the universe that scientists say is so far unobservable.

Dr. Mills hasn't made acceptance easy for himself or his sponsors by
claiming he has found the holy grail of a grand unified theory of
classical quantum mechanics and that the effect of his work on humanity
will be "bigger than fire." Indeed, Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning
physicist at Stanford University, said in September "it's extremely
unlikely that this is real, and I feel sorry for the funders, the people
who are backing this." Dr. Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist at City
College of New York cited another time-honored law that might apply to
BlackLight Power investors:  "There's a sucker born every minute."

The American Chemical Society forum is the first open peer review of
BlackLight Power's findings, while mainstream quantum mechanics,
scientists point out, has evolved from decades of tests and analysis.
BlackLight Power has sent its work out for numerous tests at independent
laboratories over the past several years and has seen positive results,
Dr.  Mills said. Conectiv is "really on the optimistic side," albeit
"cautiously" so, said David Blake, Conectiv vice president and BlackLight
Power board member. "It's getting more and more difficult to argue with
the results Dr. Mills is presenting and the validations he is starting to
accrue," Blake said. Both Dr. Mills and Conectiv's Blake say "two major
corporations" are currently testing crystals provided by the labs, but
they declined to name them.

"These folks are spending their time and energy, and the money it takes
to pay technical people, on this. You don't do that unless you've got some
inclination that you'd better look at this," Blake said. But are Conectiv
and PacifiCorp making a "Hail Mary pass" in a once stolid industry thrown
into turmoil by deregulation? "Utilities...especially on the second tier,
like Conectiv and PacifiCorp, are really looking for edges because they
don't have the size and scope" of mega-utilities that are forming through
mergers all around them, said Robert Rubin, a utilities

time. Any Velikovsky reader knows that.

The creators of America's republican form of government did not make
everything up as they went along. American political philosophy —
including the right to keep and bear arms — was firmly grounded in
historical experience and in the great works of philosophy from ancient
Greece through 18th-century Britain.

The Declaration of Independence was derived from what Thomas Jefferson
called, "the elementary books of public right, as Aristotle, Cicero,
Locke, Sidney, etc." What did Aristotle — the most influential philosopher
of Western civilization — say about the right to arms? Quite a lot that
still rings true today.

Aristotle was a student of Plato, and studied at Plato's Academy outside
Athens.

The Founders of the American Republic were intimately familiar with the
writings of both Plato and Aristotle. And while Plato and Aristotle
disagreed about many things, they agreed on the importance of arms-bearing
to a society's political structure: whoever controlled the arms would
control the government.

Plato's greatest work of political philosophy is The Republic, written in
the first part of the fourth century, BCE. In The Republic, Plato explains
his theory for why societies always progress from oligarchy (rule by a
small group of elite rich) to democracy (rule by the people) to despotism
(rule by a single man). At each step, the control of arms is essential.

In an oligarchy, "They next proceed to make a law which fixes a sum of
money as the qualification of citizenship; the sum is higher in one place
and lower in another, as the oligarchy is more or less exclusive; and they
allow no one whose property falls below the amount fixed to have any share
in the government. These changes in the constitution they effect by force
of arms, if intimidation has not already done their work" (The Republic,
Book VIII — "Four Forms of Government," Benjamin Jowett transl.).

Plato points out one of the disadvantages of oligarchy: "Another
discreditable feature is, that, for a like reason, they are incapable of
carrying on any war. Either they arm the multitude, and then they are more
afraid of them than of the enemy; or, if they do not call them out in the
hour of battle, they are oligarchs indeed, few to fight as they are few to
rule."

Eventually, the oligarchy is supplanted by democracy, "whether the
revolution has been effected by arms, or whether fear has caused the
opposite party to withdraw." In other words, either armed revolution or
the credible threat of armed revolution causes the oligarchy to lose its
power. But after a while, the people succumb to demagogy, and a tyrant
arises. The tyrant does not begin his worst abuses until after he has
disarmed his victims. In The Republic , which is a series of
teacher-student dialogues, the teacher explains: "Then the parent (the
people) will discover what a monster he has been fostering in his bosom;
and, when he wants to drive him out, he will find that he is weak and his
son (the tyrant) strong."

Student: "Why, you do not mean to say that the tyrant will use violence?
What! Beat his father if he opposes him?" Teacher: "Yes, he will, having
first disarmed him."

In Plato's ideal state, the one-man rule of a tyrant is replaced by the
one-man rule of a philosopher-king. The king uses a professional
military/police class — the Guardians — to keep everyone else in line.
Like the people of the former Soviet Union, the common people of Plato's
ideal state would be trained periodically (once a month) in use of arms,
but would have no right to arms, and arms would be centrally stored in
state armories (Plato, Laws).

In Plato's utopia, "no one, man or woman, must ever be left without
someone in charge of him; nobody must get into the habit of acting
independently in either sham fighting or the real thing, and in peace and
war alike we must give our constant attention and obedience to our l

P.S.  For those interested in Shabbat tradition, or, in case you
were unaware of this, the following is the prayer that Hebrews,
as was/did Immanual (Jesus' birth name in Aramaic)/Emanuel (his
birth name in Hebrew) recite at sundown on Friday, the beginning
of Shabbat.  The Shabbat candles must be lit before sunset on
friday, and burn into the night until they go out, or until you
blow them out at bed time.

First light the candles (any will do for now, later Kosher would
be better).  Then spread your hands out around the candles,
drawing your hands inward in a circular motion three times to
indicate the acceptance of the sanctity of Shabbat.  Then cover
your eyes (peeking at the text if necessary), and recite the

Dear Friends,
I have posted another resource for all of you
that I hope will be a big help. It's called the
*Hitlist*. Take that however you want! Over the
past three years and since the advent of Hale Bopp,
I have noticed an incredible increase in comets
and near earth asteroids. It is actually quite
mind boggling at the number of comets there are
right now in the vicinity of the earth! This monthly
report will show just a few of the comets that
appear to be most influential and come the closest.

Also, I was informed by a contact that Area 51 had
an evacuation last Wednesday. The cause was said to be
due to a chemical leak. However when I began thinking
about this, I immediately thought of this new Calif
quake. This evacuation came only a day or so before
the quakes began to hit. There are two reasons that
this could have occurred. First thought is related
to Harry Mason's "Bright Skies" article that we have
posted on the page. There are several very large miltiary
bases located not to distant from the area of the quake.
I'll leave to you to draw your own conclusions there.
Second, over the past week we have seen a dramatic
increase in solar and related activity. We have seen
two hurricanes (Irene and Jose) organized in a day each.
Absolutely unheard of. The weather in Southern California
has been extremely dry and the air full of static electricity.
In fact last thursday, I went around telling everyone
that it was looking like earthquake weather! The experts
say that's hogwash! But the environment was perfect for
an electrical discharge. The atmosphere/environmental conditions
have been prime for a couple of weeks now and the charges
do NOT seem to be totally disipating. So keep an eye open
for earthquakes and increased weather disasters around
the world.

Yet another story! - Today the sun decided to once again
kick its heels up. We had a Kp index of 8!!! This is extremely
high. The Aurora went to ten! That's the highest on the
aurora scale - maybe it went higher, we just can't record it!
I say the Sun, however all indications from the SOHO images
show that the sun is relatively quiet for this degree of local
activity. So the question is, where is it coming from
You want my two cents worth? We have seen indications lately
that reflect that ORCA is back. This is my guess - and yes it's
only a guess! I'll be posting an article and some pictures
very soon. The other choice? Well, I don't believe that Comet
Lee is finished with us yet! And there are so many comets,
as I stated earlier, there must be some effect.

So folks, the word is, hang on to your hats, this could be
a bumpy ride!

Blair Savages 'goon' Prince

PREMIER Tony Blair has branded Prince Charles a "goon".
The Prince of Wales infuriated the PM by snubbing a banquet hosted by
Chinese president Jiang Zemin in protest against China's occupation of
Tibet.

Charles is a devoted fan of the zany 50s BBC radio comedy series, The Goon
Show, which starred his hero Spike Milligan.

Blair is said to have remarked privately: "I don't know about The Goons - he
is a goon."

Relations between Blair and the heir to the throne have now hit an all-time
low. Blair's spin doctors were playing down the "snub" saying the prince was
never intended to be at the function.

But privately both Blair and Foreign Secretary Robin Cook are said to be
seething at the prince's decision which comes as Britain tries to build
important trade relations with China.

One confidante of Blair added: "The Prime Minister is far from pleased that
Charles seems to be undermining the Government's position on a range of
important issues."

Beef-on-the-bone, genetically- modified foods, failing education standards,
religion and modern architecture are all subjects that have been tackled by
the prince, even when his views have clashed with the Government or
threatened to upset multi-million conglomerates.

He has also written to Ministers about Britain's foreign policy on various
issues.

The prince's snub came after a week of strenuous protests by campaigners who
are incensed by the plight of Tibetians at the hands of China.

According to friends, his admiration for the exiled Tibetan leader, the
Dalai Lama, was just one of the reasons behind his non-attendance at the
banquet. He was also dismayed at what he saw as the "heavy-handed" police
presence to deter demonstrators.

Blair views Charles' excuse about a prior engagement as "ludicrous" as the
event at the Chinese Embassy was planned well in advance.

Charles was only a mile and a half away at the time, having dinner with

Cyrus Gordon seems to be THE authority on IE and Semitic common denominators,
a subject which has been woefully neglected in print, probably due to its
ramifications for "master race" believers, both Aryan and Judeo-Christian.
There seems no doubt that the proto-Hebrews (Arameans or whatever) of
Abraham's time lived in the same house, so to speak, as Indo-European peoples
like the Hittites during A's sojourn in Haran,
the great cultural crossroads of its time.  Later, in King David's time,
around the period when the "first draft" of the Pentateuch (E and J
traditions) was being completed, the
Israelites were companions of the IE Hittites (David's wife Bathsheba was
first married to a Hittite and was possibly a Hittite herself) and had lived
for generations side by side with the "Philistines," who are understood to be
Mycenaean (proto-Greek) mercenaries in the employ of Egypt in Canaan.  (A
couple of David's Psalms seem to be plagiarisms of Egyptian hymns, thanks to
the Israelites developing literacy under foreign tutelage.)
So, at least the "Hebrew" wing of Semitic culture undoubtedly owed much to
"Aryan" (Indo-European) influence.  However, the contact of the two cultures
produced sharing
in the opposite direction as well -- notably, the invention of the Greek and
SANSKRIT alphabets from the raw material of the SEMITIC (Canaanite-Phoenician
AND Hebrew)
alphabet.  Yes, the SANSKRIT alphabet is of SEMITIC origin, dating from a
time when
the IE peoples who would later move southeast into India, during the Vedic
period ca.
1900-1400 BCE (between the lifetimes of Abraham and Moses), came into contact
with the Aramean element dwelling in Haran, southwest of the Caucasus and Mt
Ararat, and not far from Asia Minor, home of the "Trojans" who fought the
Greeks' ancestors.

Most importantly, there seem to have been other common denominators between
these two peoples, IE and Semitic, which involve cultic ritual, i.e., common
denominators in their RELIGIONS.  One of these is the centrality of the RAM
in religious symbolism and in their sacrificial rituals.  The Hittites,
"Vedic" Hindus, Mycenaeans, and Israelites all
had ram-symbolism that was specific to their ruling classes, which kept
"sacred flocks" as a sign of status.  The Greek legend of the Golden Fleece
points to such a tradition among the Mycenaean warlords -- and perhaps the
location of the Fleece, in what was regarded as the ancestral homeland of the
Mycenaeans (or Minyai), to which Jason and the Argonauts journeyed, implies
closer IE-Semitic contact than we have suspected, because the Fleece lay on
the south coast of the Black Sea, not far from Mt. Ararat ...
Then, of course, we have the commingling of IE and Semitic immigrants in the
eastern Mediterranean during the time between the collapse of the Minoan
empire under the Mycenaeans, the fall of Troy (after which some proto-Greeks
migrated to the Nile Delta), and the Hebrew exodus from Egypt -- when ALL
rubbed elbows as "the Sea Peoples."

Consult any of the books of Cyrus Gordon** for greater detail, or read Robert
Graves' commentaries in his two-volume "Greek Myths" for facts PLUS his own
conjectures.

As for where Sumer fits into all this, that's still an open question --
because at the very
beginning of Sumerian records, the ethnic "Sumerians" are already fading out
of the picture and the Akkadians --a SEMITIC people and the approximate
"ancestor" of the
Hebrews-- are coming to dominate the culture.  By 2000 BC, before Abraham,
Sumer had already extended its power all the way to Asia Minor and the
Caucasus, where it had "colonies" and military outposts, and Sumer already
seems to have had a cultural influence on the Hittites and neighboring IE
tribes, the eldest of any "Greek" ancestors -- and Sumerian includes many
Hebrew "roots" dating from a period LONG BEFORE the Hebrews EXISTED (long
before Abraham's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather!) , possibly
originating as "loan-words" borrowed from the older Akkadian tongue, close
enough to "proto-Semitic."   (But let's not overlook the fact that EGYPTIAN
influences on both the Semitic Hebrew language and culture and IE Greek
language and culture was possibly just as strong, with even stronger the
influence of the PHOENICIANS,  those "Egyptianized" Semitic allies of the
Hebrews AND the IE Mycenaeans -- who MAY have originated as a Mediterranean
colony of the "Sumerians" (NEITHER Semitic NOR I-E) and/or the Semitic
Akkadians, earlier inheritors of the culture of Sumer.)

The US must be more "accommodating" in their problem solving and
learn to stop bullying American Indians.  Remind him of the terrible outcome
of their raid on the Branch Dividians at Waco, Texas and ask him to avoid
another national tragedy!  Instead, the DOJ should protect the human
rights of the Dine'h.

Feed the Rich

Myth: One way to create both jobs and fun is to make your city a major
sports Mecca by adding a new stadium. Just ask New York's Mayor Rudolph
Giuliani. He argued that it was necessary to raise $600 million in taxes
because Yankee stadium had to be replaced after a chunk of it had broken
off, that a new stadium would generate tax revenue and thousands of jobs,
and that the project would create an economic impact of $1 billion
dollars.

You've no doubt heard tell of the importance of being a team player. But
that's been replaced by a new adage: the importance of being a team owner.
In "Field of Schemes: How The Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money
into Private Profit," authors Joanna Cagan and Neil deMause reveal that
behind the slick pitch of Giuliani and others is the Cadillac of welfare
programs for the rich.

Despite Giuliani's promises, consultants KPMG-Peat Marwick projected an
economic impact of only $105 million, a mere tenth of what the mayor was
claiming. The city's Independent Budget Office reported that a new stadium
would generate only 570 new jobs along with $5 million in new city
taxes--nowhere near enough to pay the estimated yearly bond payments
exceeding $75 million.

The game of stadium welfare--taxpayers building new stadiums filled with
luxury boxes for team owners to make more money on--is heating up. Boston,
Birmingham, Alabama, San Antonio, San Diego. As the century draws to a
close, it's difficult to find a major U.S. city that hasn't been cajoled,
threatened or blackmailed in a fight to build a new sports palace.

Just how big is this problem? Cagan and deMause estimate cities will have
spent $11 billion between the start and the end of the 1990s.

It's small wonder the game is so popular. While manufacturing plants can
win tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks, sports teams hit corporate
welfare home runs that can reach the half-a-billion-dollar-mark. New
stadiums can house upwards of 200 luxury boxes which go for $100,000 a
year and up, money that doesn't have to be shared with the teams'
municipal landlords or with their fellow owners, since all four major
sports exempt suite revenue from profit-sharing among teams. Translation:
millions more per year in team profits. Meaning profits in teams owned by
the likes of billionaire Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft and owner of
the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trailblazers.

Who loses when sports-team owners get their new complexes? Cleveland
provides a disturbing answer. Heralded for being in the midst of an
economic renaissance, it undertook to construct three publicly-funded
sports facilities in a decade. Meanwhile, "the percentage of Clevelanders
living in poverty rose from 17 percent in 1970 to 40 percent by the mid
1990s. The city school system, drained of property taxes, is in
shambles--only 38 percent of its students graduate high school, with only
seven percent testing at a 12th grade level--and was placed in state
receivership in 1995. In fact, the day before the deal for a new football
stadium was approved by the city council, the Cleveland public school
system announced it would cut $52 million over two years, laying off 160
teachers and eliminating interscholastic athletics from a program that
Cleveland School Superintendent Richard A. Boyd described as 'in the worst
financial shape of any school district in the country.' "

But what about all those jobs new that stadiums are supposed to create?
Many studies reveal that the estimates of "thousands of jobs" created by
new stadiums are out in left field. Mark Rosentraub, author of "Major
League Losers," found that the economic impact of professional sports
teams is small--especially when compared to the size of the public
subsidies, which can often run as high as $250,000 per job.

Want to throw a curve ball at this scam? The authors show it isn't the
all-star politicians who bring about change. Instead, the winning game
plan is carried out by everyday activists--who want the money to go to
schools and services instead of to wealthy team owners. In Birmingham, the
Real Accountability, Progress and Solutions group (RAPS) won a 1998
referendum, garnering 57% opposition to a proposed stadium that would have
cost $703 million. This despite those favoring the new stadium spending $1
million in their unsuccessful campaign to woo voters.

Trade war over beef between Britain and France

Economic tensions between Britain and France have grown throughout this month
to the point of provoking an all-out trade war.

The dispute began following the October 1 announcement by the French government
that it would reject the European Commission's decision to lift a ban on
British beef, issued six days earlier. France based its decision on a report by
its Food Safety Agency (FFSA), which states that British beef is not safe for
human consumption as it is still not free from BSE or "Mad Cow Disease". The EU
imposed the ban on British beef in 1996, after a link was established between
eating BSE-infected meat and a new variant of the deadly human brain-wasting
disorder Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease that has killed over 40 people.

The French decision provoked an immediate and angry response from British
farmers and the tabloid press. The next day the Blair Labour government asked
the European Commission to take action against France. EC president Romano
Prodi promised legal action, but only if scientific advisers found no evidence
to support France's position.

France agreed to allow British beef to be transported across its borders, but
not to be sold in its markets. British farmers began to organise an anti-French
campaign and the press followed suit with lurid denunciations of the French
people dating back as far as the battle of Agincourt in 1415 and including
obligatory nationalist references to France's defeat at the hands of the Nazis
in World War II.

The situation worsened on October 8, when Germany delayed a decision to import
British beef until a scientific examination of the FFSA's report.

British Agriculture Minister Nick Brown vowed to personally boycott all French
goods. Other Labour MPs called for a boycott of all French and German produce,
while the Conservative opposition and the tabloid papers demanded this and more
from the government. For the next two weeks, protests and counter-protests were
organised by British and French farmers, blocking lorries at channel ports.
On October 13 the European Commission found that the FFSA report was based on a
misinterpretation of scientific findings, primarily regarding the age of cattle
infected with BSE, but submitted it for further examination. At the October 15
EU summit in Finland, Blair pointedly refused to shake hands with French Prime
Minister Lionel Jospin and threatened legal action over the ban. Many British
supermarket chains began partial bans on French produce and schools in some
Conservative-controlled authorities followed suit.

On October 23, an EU report was released confirming that human and animal
sewage has been used by France's rendering industry to make animal feed. The
investigation began in August, after a German television report uncovered the
fact that feed had been contaminated with dangerous pesticides, heavy metals
and human waste. From then on the war of words between the two countries was
peppered with charges of "hypocrisy" levelled against the French and warnings
that eating its produce could lead to food poisoning.

Nick Brown swiftly promised that food labelling was to be tightened up to allow
consumers to make "informed choices". The National Farmers Union announced that
a "Great British Food Brand" scheme would be launched at a conference to be
addressed next month by Brown. In the midst of all this, the advice of a
scientific advisory committee to the Blair government that there is no case for
banning French meat was met with derision.

French Agriculture Minister Jean Glavany announced he was cancelling a planned
visit to Brown. The head of France's biggest farmers' union, Luc Guyau of the
FDSEA, warned of a blockade of Britain: "England is an island. An island is
easier to blockade than a continent," he said.

Blair was forced to call Jospin to try and resolve the issue, while he publicly
said, "a tit-for-tat illegal trade war with other European countries is not in
our interests". Jean Glavany said later that conditions for a "quiet dialogue"
were not in place.

EU scientists gave their findings on the 600-page French dossier yesterday,
ruling unanimously that there was no reason to revise the earlier decision on
British beef. Earlier reports said the investigating committee was split. This
will now be passed on to the European parliament, but should France maintain
its position, any legal action against it could take months.

France claims that the decline in BSE cases in Britain has been less rapid than
the Blair government says. It points out that BSE cases in the UK are at 650
per million cattle, compared with fewer than two per million in France, and
that this refutes claims of a problem-free national herd. Britain denies this
and states that the majority of cases now appear in cows over 30 months old and
therefore in animals that will

When good cops go bad

Not too long ago, as a series of disturbing revelations about the conduct of
federal agents during the Waco fiasco began to ooze into public view, Mario Paz
found himself rendered into a lifeless exclamation point to concerns about
modern American law enforcement.

Paz, a 65-year-old grandfather scraping by in an unsavory Los Angeles
neighborhood, was at home in bed when police officers blew the locks off his
front and back doors, tossed in stun grenades, and stormed through his home.
Police then shot Paz dead in his bed. The police were looking for a neighbor
who was allegedly dealing drugs.

It would be reassuring to dismiss Paz's death as a mistake, although a lethal
one, but Paz is hardly the first person to suffer at the hands of wayward
police officers. His name joins Pedro Oregon Navarro, a Mexican immigrant
killed by Houston police in a botched and illegal raid; Amadou Diallo, killed
in a hail of official-issue bullets on a New York City street; and Donald
Scott, a millionaire gunned down by agents from the Los Angeles Sheriff's
Department and five federal law-enforcement agencies. Add Nelson Robles to the
list; he survived his encounter with confused DEA agents who raided his home.
Widely separated geographically and in the characteristics of the victims, such
raids share two distinguishing qualities: The use of overwhelming and often
lethal force by the agents of law and order, and the fact that they are almost
always carried out in the name of the war on drugs.

The Cato Institute's Diane Cecilia Weber examined the recent transformation of
law enforcement in "Warrior Cops: The Ominous Growth of Paramilitarism in
American Police Departments." She found that American officialdom's frenzy to
enforce drug prohibition had led Congress to loosen traditional restrictions on
the use of military resources by civilian police departments. The result has
been a flood of training and materiel that is increasingly transforming peace
officers into occupation troops on America's streets.

That transformation has meant a world of difference to all too many Americans.
Where civilian police officers are members of a community that they patrol and
where they try to maintain order, soldiers are tasked to destroy an enemy.
Police knock on your door; soldiers kick it in.

When restraints are dropped on the deployment and use of force, those who
suffer the most are usually those who were alienated from the center of power
to begin with, and have the fewest resources with which to resist. The result
has been disaster for many minority communities. While the ranks of the victims
of abusive power are salted with middle-class and even wealthy white Americans,
a disproportionate number of the fallen are poor blacks, hispanics, and
immigrants like Mario Paz.

The problem has grown to the point that Amnesty International, which normally
focuses its attention on countries led by generals, commissars, and presidents-
for-life, released a report on "Race, Rights, and Police Brutality" in the
United States. Human Rights Watch chimed in with the almost simultaneous
"Shielded from Justice" city-by-city breakdown of police excesses. The two
reports put big-city mayors and police brass on the immediate defensive.

Less lethal, but still troublesome, is the adoption of pseudo-scientific
"profiles" that police use to catch drug smugglers on the nation's highways.
While the specific criteria of such profiles are tightly held secrets, their
implementation in the field is such that being pulled over for matching the
profile is often referred to as "driving while black." Such profiling is now
falling into disfavor because of the overt racial implications, but it hasn't
ceased by any means. The American Civil Liberties Union has been tracking some
of the worst offenses and compiles its findings in "Arrest the Racism."

The puritanical crusade against drugs bears much of the blame for what has
happened to American law enforcement -- and civil liberties -- but the problem
now extends further. Perceived threats from terrorism and privately owned
firearms have joined the ranks of excuses for tougher, meaner, and more brutal
law enforcement. It's as if the new tactics and toys have acquired their own
momentum, and now just need to fasten on to convenient justifications.
Police abuse is nothing new, but the militarization of law enforcement has
taken an old, chronic problem and turned it into a plague on the body of
American society.

As horrible as headline-grabbing tragedies like Waco are, they may serve up
some small benefit by turning public attention to the unfortunate
transformation of the relationship between Americans and cops-turned-occupation
troops in their midst. If that warning is taken seriously, maybe we can avoid
adding more names to the list below "Mario Paz."

Your possible outcomes are binary: win/lose.
Your probability of winning is based on the number of lottery
tickets you bought VS. the total number of tickets sold in a
lottery.  If you bought one, and 150 million others were sold,
then your chance of winning is one in 150 million.  You're more

[CTRL] The How of Nuclear Abolition2000

QUICK Please send me a copy of the Proposal to Build a Grassroots Movement
to Pressure the U.S. Political System for Nuclear Weapons Abolition.  I have
a hunch that in it somewhere is a passage read to me by reasoning humorist,
or is it humoring reasonist, at Proposition One which called for a cross
country PeaceMarch for the Year2000 to further the abolition of nuclear
weapons.  This aspect of the proposal has been on schedule since one year
ago and manifesting as Global Peace Walk2000 from San Francisco (January 15,
2000, Dr. King's birthday) to Washington DC (to unite all survival issue
messages and activists to compel nuclear disarmament, to gather over a
million people at the Washington Monument between October 8-12) and on to
the United Nations in New York City for its 55th anniversary October
24,2000, where we expect to exceed the success of our World Peace March of
1982 which ended with over a million people gathered in Central Park in
support of the UN Second Special Session on Disarmament inspired by Mahatma
Gandhi's "guruji" the late most venerable Nichidatsu Fujii who with his
supporters beat the drums for peace offering their walk as a prayer and
great cry to the heavens for "Global Peace Now!".

Along the way the Global Peace Walk2000 will be initiating the "United
Nations Decade of Creating a Culture of Peace for the 21st Century".

Based on the support we have gathered for this walk so far we expect its
messages will reach a minimum of 50million people over the next 12 months
before the US national elections.   With your help it  can reach and deeply
influence at least ten times that many or as many as it will take for an
effective global nuclear abolition agreement in 2000.  Today I spoke with
the webmaster and one of the staff at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation in
Santa Barbara which will be taking an active role in supporting Global Peace
Walk2000 especially as it passes through Santa Barbara where we already
received two years ago the proclamation of support from the Santa Barbara
mayor as we have so many others.  The GPW2000 will be leaving the SF Bay
area in conjunction with first or second largest Martin Luther King event in
the nation with participation of both the San Francisco and Oakland Mayors
who have already given the Global Peace Walk their mayoral proclamations of
support. (Willie Brown and Jerry Brown)

Not only because of the increasingly volatile threat of nuclear
conflagration by mistake or design, but from myriad serious environmental
threats such as predicted destruction of all oceanic phytoplankton (over
half Earth's oxygen supply) by the year 2008 from increased solar
irradiation due to ozone layer depletion, from the greenhouse effect and
observable increasingly destructive climate and disease vectors,etc, we
truly face a global emergency on many fronts today.  There may not BE a next
generation unless we resolve these problems NOW.   The global abolition of
nuclear weapons is today a "conservative" issue that almost every single
person can agree is needed but yet the status quo persists.

Nuclear Abolition is the "big" issue under which all other survival issues
and their activists can be united and as a "united we stand" PEOPLE these
problems can and MUST be resolved in the Year 2000.   Some think it already

Nuclear Abolition 2000 is not a pipe dream.  It is on schedule if we see the
Year2000 as the year when all nuclear weapons globally can be abolished
starting with the will of the people of the United States of America to
compel their elected representatives to pass a Great Law of Peace in the
present Congress and that any candidate for any national election next
November will NOT get elected if they do not NOW support this necessary
antidote of The Great Law of Peace.   This is the message being carried by
Global Peace Walk2000 which was spawned one year ago from this loosely knit
group of folks with the vision and dream to use the year 2000 as the focus
to abolish nuclear weapons.

By mobilizing all activists and ordinary people in this campaign it is not
only possible or realistic that the Holmes Norton bill HR-2545 Nuclear
Disarmament and Economic Conversion Act can be passed in this Congress, but
it looks like it is the only viable opportunity to fulfill the vision of
Abolition2000, and so therefore it MUST be made a part of this Great Law of
Peace2000.

One thing is clear, Thomas and the folks of the 18year ongoing antinuclear
peace vigil at the White House whose meditations and discussions with
hundreds of thousands of visitors to Lafayette Park there inspired their
Proposition One ballot initiative and then the introduction of this proposed
federal law for global nuclear disarmament, these people are not in the
"business" of working for peace.  Nobody pays them to "work for peace"
whether they succeed or not.  They want to succeed with all of their heart
and soul and breath;

And, to "add-a-tad" MORE perspective to things, one's chances of
placing a bet on a single number on a Roulette table, OR on the
Big Wheel, and winning, is one in 36.

The chances of being hit by lightning in ones life, or getting
lung cancer as a NON-smoker, is only one in 2000 (as a smoker,
your chances are only increaced by 7 - 12 times, i.e., 12 times
in 2000).

And, one's chances of being struck by lightning in their life
time is only one in 2000.

Judicial Watch Speech Scheduled for C-Span on
   Saturday, October 30 9:45 p.m. EST and Sunday,
 October 31, at 12:45 a.m EST

 (Washington, D.C.) Johnny Chung, a former funding source for
Bill and Hillary clinton's political campaigns, spoke last
weekend to Judicial Watch, a not-for-profit law firm that exposes
and prosecutes government corruption. Judicial Watch also gave
Chung special recognition for his courage in coming forward. The
speech was part of Judicial Watch's 5th Anniversary Celebration
in Pasadena, California on October 23, 1999.
Among the highlights of Chung's speech:
 Chung detailed how an employee of Hughes Aerospace admitted
to him in China that the reason Hughes had turned over sensitive
missile data to the Chinese communists after a Chinese rocket had
failed was that that was the only way Hughes could get insurance
money for its losses.
 Chung asked why banking records he had turned over to the
clinton Justice Department showing funds transfers from the
Chinese military to his bank accounts were never turned over to
Congress.
 Chung later sent some these funds to Clinton's political
campaign operation at the DNC.
 Chung recounted how he, at the urging of and in the presence
of DNC official Richard Sullivan [who is now reported to be
working for Al Gore] and another Democratic fundraiser wrote
checks totaling $25,000 for straw donors for President Clinton's
1996 campaign.
 Chung recounted how former DNC Chairman Don Fowler was
perfectly aware that his associates were related to the Chinese
military. Chung also implicated Terence McAuliffe in the
Chinagate scandal.
 In response to a recent fundraising solicitation from
Hillary Rodham clinton, Chung said, "Been there, done that, not
again."
 Chung praised Larry Klayman and Judicial Watch as being
seekers of the truth and questioned why only "givers" in the
campaign fundraising scandal have been prosecuted and not
upper-level "givees" in the clinton White House and DNC.

Your file would not be available to all and sundry who have a clearance.  No
file ever is.  First of all, there is the need to know matter.  I doubt that
anyone is interested in my FBI file, and if they have a need to see it, they
can have at it.  I don't think the files in the White House are such a
mystery.  Remember when they discovered early on that some guy was sending
some kind of info to Barbara Bush.  I suppose they might have gotten
suspicious of a lot of people at that time.  Just who they sent for the
files, and who gave them to whomever they sent, I never heard.  It's just
that it's amazing to hear such an uproar over the White House looking to see
whom they thought they could trust.

I remember one time when we were recruiting Japanese/English speaking guides
to work as guides at an Expo when the security officer from the Embassy was
using my phone to discuss something with an investigator.  The conversation
that I heard went like this:

Security Officer:  "Oh, well what about that fire he set when he was nine
years old?"

interlude while he listened--

"Oh that was his brother.  Oh, okay.  I guess he's a go."

Security Officer hangs up the phone and leaves.

When you deal with the Government you get used to that kind of snooping going
on.  Do I think that anyone setting a fire while in Primary School is to be
cast out of society.  No I don't.  Did our ex-Marine Corps officer think so?
I guess so.
Do I think most files are interesting--absolutely not, and I don't think
anyone is going to look into anyone's just for the fun of it.  Mostly I don't

email address;  there is no such email address.  Sort of blows the
credibility of the several article(s) recently posted with this attached,
as far as I'm concerned.   I've seen this ""REPOST of William Cooper""
attached to so many and varied types of causes and plights that it's hard to
know what people are really saying or wanting...  or what are the messages
they are trying to get across?

And wasn't it William Cooper who resurfaced the Protocols of the Elders in
the 1930's in a book called  "A Pale Horse" ???  H...  strange conflicts
of messaging are coming through with this REPOST attachment.  Just another
good case for not being persuaded one way or the other,  having learned to
think for one's self and rather standing firm in one's own professed beliefs
and standing at least for something.

Sen. Bob Smith has succeeded in amending an upcoming appropriations bill to
beat back the latest wave of Clinton administration disrespect for two key
elements of a free citizenry -- privacy and the right to keep and bear arms.
Smith's amendment to the Justice-State-Commerce appropriations bill would
foil FBI plans to keep records of private identifying information on
law-abiding citizens who buy guns. The amendment also forbids a proposed tax
on gun purchases, and authorizes citizens to sue if the FBI doesn't observe
these restrictions.

Senator Smith is to be praised for keeping his eye on some balls that might
have been lost in the smoke of scandal and misinformation that the Clinton
Administration seems endlessly to emit. Actually, few things could make the
need for vigorous defense of 2nd Amendment rights clearer than the ongoing
spectacle of Clinton contempt for the citizens he is supposed to serve. For
the 2nd Amendment is really in the Constitution to give men like Bill
Clinton
something to think about when their ambition gets particularly
over-inflated.

The Second Amendment was not put into the Constitution by the Founders
merely
to allow us to intimidate burglars, or hunt rabbits to our hearts' content.
This is not to say that hunting game for the family dinner, or defending
against personal dangers, were not anticipated uses for firearms,
particularly on the frontier. But these things are not the real purpose of
the Amendment.

The Founders added the 2nd Amendment so that when, after a long train of
abuses, a government evinces a methodical design upon our natural rights, we
will have the means to protect and recover our rights. That is why the right
to keep and bear arms was included in the Bill of Rights.

In fact, if we make the judgment that our rights are being systematically
violated, we have not merely the right, but the duty, to resist and
overthrow
the power responsible. That duty requires that we always maintain the
material capacity to resist tyranny, if necessary, something that it is very
hard to do if the government has all the weapons. A strong case can be made,
therefore, that it is a fundamental DUTY of the free citizen to keep and
bear
arms.

In our time there have been many folks who don't like to be reminded of all
this. And they try, in their painful way, to pretend that the word "people"
in the 2nd Amendment means something there that it doesn't mean in any one
of
the other nine amendments in the Bill of Rights. They say that, for some odd
reason, the Founders had a lapse, and instead of putting in "states" they
put
in "people." And so it refers to a right inherent in the state government.

This position is incoherent, and has been disproved by every piece of
legitimate historical evidence. At one point in Jefferson's letters, for
example, he is talking about the militia, and he writes, "militia -- every
able-bodied man in the state. ..." The militia was every able-bodied man in
the state. It had nothing to do with the state government. The words
"well-regulated" had to do with organizing that militia and drilling it in
the style of the 19th century, but "militia" itself referred to the
able-bodied citizens of the state or commonwealth -- not to the state
government.

It would make no sense whatsoever to restrict the right to keep and bear
arms
to state governments, since the principle on which our polity is based, as
stated in the Declaration, recognizes that any government, at any level, can
become oppressive of our rights. And we must be prepared to defend ourselves
against its abuses.

But the movement against 2nd Amendment rights is not just a threat to our
capacity to defend ourselves physically against tyranny. It is also part of
the much more general assault on the very notion that human beings are
capable of moral responsibility. This is a second and deeper reason that the
defense of the 2nd Amendment is essential to the defense of liberty.

Advocates of banning guns think we can substitute material things for human

Ollie North on Nov. 22,  "W" on Nov. 18 at Landover Baptist Church in
Freehold, Iowa.

This is a wacky church claiming to use REAL corpses for their haunted house
this weekend - flown in from Turkey. They also have some wild  commetns about
Indians being barred from Thanksgiving festivities. Really strange stuff here
- particularly from folks claiming to be Christians. They also claim they are
the BEST people in the world, and their website makes them appear to be some
type of crazed "cult".  (I kid you not!). They claim that CLOTHING is the
most important thing about being a Christian. Ugh..They sound like something
out of a horror movie, but NOT Christians. I am almost wondering if this
isn't a fake site - but it sure looks real.
(You guys really have got to check this out... )

However, the reason I posted this was to tell anyone on this list who may
live in, or be near to Iowa - to go to the church, listen to the speeches of
Bush & North and ASK QUESTIONS which would of course, embarass them -
involving CIA drug dealing, etc.  Blow their minds, and get some exposure.
If I could be there, I would do it myself.

So, anybody on this list in or near Iowa?  Anyone interested?

I doubt they'd be expecting any of "us types" to bombard them with those
types of questions in a church, so I'm thinking it would really catch them
off guard. Hey, just a thought anyway.

Check out the site and tell me if you think it would be worth it to make a
show and ask CIA - Drug questions.  Might get some attention due to Baby
Bush's bid for Prez...

The Boys on the Tracks, by Mara Leveritt, which was published
this week, was erroneously listed with the chain bookstores, and
perhaps with some independent book stores as well, as having
been published last June. Because of that mistake, some stores
may not have the book in stock or even on-order. Book
stores--especially the chain bookstores, like Waldenbooks,
Barnes and Noble, Brentanos, Hastings, Books-a-Million, Borders,
and B.Dalton's--need to be contacted and set straight--and the
more calls they receive, the better.

Information about the book is spreading quickly. Mara has
already received several calls for interviews, and on Nov. 5,
the Arkansas Times will publish an excerpt from the book, which
will be posted on arktimes.com. Thanks to those who have already
ordered a copy, THE BOYS ON THE TRACKS is selling well on
Amazon.com. If any of you could spare a minute to call a local

I would gladly have a look at my FBI file on the net. I think it is a great
idea. I would rather see people true to themselves than all these false
fronts. Put FBI files, put economic records, put judicial records, driving
records -put it on the net. Why should this information be in the hands of
few elite, to manipulate and use at their discretion.
Remember the perfect slave thinks he is free. Your life is not
private-privacy is an illusion. Look at Lotus, in the late 80's they
developed a  marketing program that you could put on your computer and with a
few clicks have personal information down to the household level, there was a
quiet howl of protest and the program was retired. The database are already
there and are generally not used in the best interest of citizens. We and
generations of us have been educated to be unwitting slaves of the ruling
elite. Johann Fitche, an Illuminati member, told the German people, that they
were gonna take the kids and teach 'em how, what, when and why to think. This
system was brought here by S&B and "we" are the result. This slavery is very
subtle and many never realize the shackles nor even test the length of the
chain, but the fetters are generations old.

Your file would not be available to all and sundry who have a clearance.  No
file ever is.  First of all, there is the need to know matter.  I doubt that
anyone is interested in my FBI file, and if they have a need to see it, they
can have at it.  I don't think the files in the White House are such a
mystery.  Remember when they discovered early on that some guy was sending
some kind of info to Barbara Bush.  I suppose they might have gotten
suspicious of a lot of people at that time.  Just who they sent for the
files, and who gave them to whomever they sent, I never heard.  It's just
that it's amazing to hear such an uproar over the White House looking to see
whom they thought they could trust.

I remember one time when we were recruiting Japanese/English speaking guides
to work as guides at an Expo when the security officer from the Embassy was
using my phone to discuss something with an investigator.  The conversation
that I heard went like this:

Security Officer:  "Oh, well what about that fire he set when he was nine
years old?"

"Oh that was his brother.  Oh, okay.  I guess he's a go."

Security Officer hangs up the phone and leaves.

When you deal with the Government you get used to that kind of snooping going
on.  Do I think that anyone setting a fire while in Primary School is to be
cast out of society.  No I don't.  Did our ex-Marine Corps officer think so?
I guess so.
Do I think most files are interesting--absolutely not, and I don't think
anyone is going to look into anyone's just for the fun of it.  Mostly I don't

THE INTEGRAL FAST REACTOR COULD USHER IN THE HYDROGEN ECONOMY AND SAVE THE
PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES $2 BILLION A DAY

In the advanced space development community it was accepted as an
unchallenged assumption that hydrogen and electricity were the ideal energy
mediums for the future. Each can easily and efficiently be converted to the
other. Together they address all energy applications with virtually no
pollution.
But hydrogen and electricity are not energy sources. They must be produced
from energy sources. In space there is endless energy from the sun that can
be captured by arrays using the thinnest metallic foil. On the earth such
systems would be torn apart in seconds by weather. The big question is ---
What energy source should be used on earth to produce these unquestionably
desirable energy mediums. After digesting 400 peer reviewed articles I think
I know!
The math is quite simple. When one uranium atom fissions it releases more
energy than the combustion of 10 million carbon atoms!
Twenty five years ago I opposed the present generation of light water slow
neutron reactors (all U.S. commercial reactors are light water slow neutron
reactors). I did so because of safety issues and the absence of an acceptable
system for spent fuel disposal. I was wrong about safety. The safety record
of the U.S. nuclear industry has been superlative. But the spent fuel
solutions still appeared problematic --- until I discovered the INTEGRAL FAST
REACTOR.
There is a team of scientists at the Argonne National Labs led by Dr. Charles
Till that was assigned the task of eliminating the bugs in the present
generation of commercial nuclear reactors. The technology they developed is
so elegant that I know everyone who is concerned about the environment will
love it. And those who are impatient to realize the hydrogen economy will
love it more.
Dr. Till added recent innovations to a concept that originally thrilled
Enrico Fermi and the original atomic pioneers. The pioneers envisioned that
by using fast neutrons instead of slow neutrons, virtually unlimited amounts
of energy could be produced from limited stocks of uranium. They called this
reactor a breeder since what it did was turn unfissionable U-238 into
fissionable plutonium 239 thereby breeding its own fuel. Less than one
percent of natural uranium is U-235. At the current rate of usage all the
fissionable U-235 will be depleted in 35 years. If this new technology is
implemented, uranium need not be mined for 500 years. Existing stock piles
will be more than adequate.
The Integral Fast Reactor:
1) is cheaper to build and cheaper to operate than water reactors.
2) is passively safe. It uses a metallic fuel that expands when it overheats,
causing the volume to increase which decreases the neutron density to the
point where the reaction is shut down by the laws of nature without operator
intervention! Loss of coolant poses no threat because the thermal currents of
the liquid sodium are sufficient to stabilize the reactor.
3) can be operated in a mode where it uses as its fuel the spent fuel of the
water reactors. By far the most lethal nuclear waste on the planet is the
spent fuel which is produced in the United States at the rate of 6 tons a
day. Currently our government policy is to store this waste for 30,000 years
(Yucca Mountain). Electric rate payers are assessed one mill per kilowatt
hour of power produced by nuclear reactors to deal with nothing but these
spent fuel rods --- to the tune of more than $800 million per year!

4) can be operated in a mode to burn the world's excess stocks of weapons
grade plutonium. Twenty five IFRs, each requiring 10 tons of plutonium for
start up, would transmute the world's entire declared surplus of 250 tons of
weapons grade plutonium into a waste product that only needs 300 years
storage. And while this process may take 40 or more years, from the first
moment that the plutonium is irradiated it is effectively removed from use by
potential rogue bomb terrorists. At that point a three foot thick hot cell
wall is required to handle it, while before an 8 pound brick of metallic
plutonium required for bomb making could be carried safely in any briefcase.
5) recycles all the long lived radioactive material on site. That is why it
is called "integral". Once the initial fuel is loaded no fuel goes in and no
waste comes out for the entire 70 year life cycle. This will greatly reduce
the current 90,000 nuclear shipments a year on trains and trucks. At the end
of the 70 years the nuclear "ash" of the IFR needs to be stored for only 300
years as opposed to 30,000!
6) is referred to as the ADVANCED LIQUID METAL REACTOR (ALMR) at General
Electric where its commercial development is being disrupted by congressional
mandate.

Bibi Netanyahu, the former Israeli Primie Minister, is currently
penning his autobiography.

It is said to be laced with acid for Bill and Hillary Clinton. No
doubt, with New York's large Jewish vote, Netanyahu's revelations
could be a hot topic for the upcoming Senate race.

Netanyahu reportedly details how Bill Clinton lied to him and
used a classic "bait-and-switch" technique to get him to sign the
Wye Peace Accord with PLO leader Yasser Arafat.

Israel has long been seeking the freedom for one-time Naval
intelligence officer Jonathan Pollard. Pollard was jailed in the
'80s for spying on behalf of Israel, our ally. Pollard confessed
to the crimes.

According to Netanyahu, Clinton had agreed to free Pollard and
allow him to move to Israel. The deal had been arranged, and
Netanyahu was preparing for the press conference - just minutes
away - when Clinton informed him he was not going to release
Pollard as promised. Netanyahu is said to have turned pale.

Netanyahu had little squiggle room. And he wasn't Winston
Churchill either. He accepted Clinton's terms and signed the
agreement.

lives there (only the SECOND house she's ever lived in!). When my father
died three years ago, she had the house appraised...it came in at $250,000.
And that is the MEDIAN home value for that township! Sure, some of that
increase is inflation, but an awful lot is real-estate speculation...

The good guys get forced out, so the bad guys can run drugs, take bribes,
and cover up their illegal activities, says U.S. Customs Department
whistleblower John Carman about the agency he served for 15 years.
With a long career of meritorious service, Carman recently won a victory in
a court case he is pursuing against the Customs Department over the
treatment he has received. Prior to losing his job at Customs, Carman worked
for the Secret Service, the U.S. Mint and the San Diego Police Department.

"Some Customs agents up in Los Angeles and Riverside just recently resigned
because of the corruption that's going on," Carman told WorldNetDaily in an
exclusive interview. "They're being ordered off the investigations. They're
being told not to do certain things. They just get tired of it and they
realize what happened to me. They don't want to go through that, so they're
bailing out real quick so they can get another job and go on with their
lives so they don't get caught up in the mess," he explained.

Carman has a long list of infractions and evidence to support his claims of
drug deals, smuggling, payoffs, bribes, drug running and more. The
corruption is so deep, he maintains President Clinton and Attorney General
Janet Reno must be complicit. They could not be unaware of the level of
corruption in the department, he insists.

President Clinton has taken steps to make it easier for drugs to be smuggled
into the U.S., he said. Surveillance planes, chase cars, and other means to
apprehend drug runners have been discontinued under orders of the president.
Carman blames Clinton for increased drug traffic and for a Customs
Department that has become ineffective and corrupt.

Carman has reported and documented many cases of various levels of
corruption to the internal affairs investigators within the Customs
Department. He says Reno is fully aware of those complaints, but does
nothing, and points out 15 years of charges have resulted only in death
threats and severe harassment for him.

Carman has issued a list of complaints and charges against Customs officials
over the years. He says the charges have never been denied. Officials simply
use bureaucratic red tape to avoid answering the claims.

"I'm correct. They've never refuted any of the allegations. That's the most
important point. Never refuted anything I've said," explained Carman.
"They've only tried to skate around it by saying 'you didn't follow
procedures. You didn't talk to somebody right.' That's all wrong because I
went to internal affairs, I went ... to the office of special counsel ... I
went to the Department of Justice, I even went to the White House.
Everybody. I followed suit because I knew that if I didn't do it right I
wouldn't be able to go public and then they could say, well you violated
something. Well, I didn't."

"I've got a stack of paperwork to prove that I went to the special counsel,"
he said, "and the administrative law judge still ruled against me because he
thought that I didn't go to special counsel. Well, it's a waste of time.
They've got little old ladies on telephones that conduct their
investigations by calling up the bad guys and saying 'did you talk to Mr.
Carman?' And they say no, and that will be it. That's an investigation,"
Carman complained.

Although others have been frightened away, Carman has refused to back down
in his attempts to expose what he sees as evil taking more and more control
of the Customs Department.

When he was forced to retire from the Customs Department, he was able to
obtain a favorable settlement agreement, but he has been unable to get the
Customs Department to abide by that agreement. He says he can even show that
corrupt officials are preventing his service records from being released,
which has virtually ended his career as he attempts to find new work.

Customs Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly recently toured U.S. Customs
facilities along the southwest border, according to informed sources. His
announced purpose was to learn about problems and concerns directly from
employees.

Carman claims that Kelly was sheltered by management officials from the many
problems and complaints that exist.

"Rudy M. Camacho ... was along to make sure that no one would openly speak
out against him or the commissioner. Politics you know. Who's going to speak
openly with the 'problem' standing right there with the Customs
Commissioner? I honestly feel that maybe headquarters doesn't have the
slightest idea about what is really happening along the border. They have to
rely on such persons that are in charge with the intricacies of everyday
procedures and incidents that hardly ever reach the Commissioner back in
Washington

The chief executive officer and directors of the International Paper Company
are convicted felons. But not one of them has done time in jail paid a
nickel in fines or performed a day's community service.
  In 1991, International Paper's (IP) CEO, John Georges, and the IP
board of directors were charged in federal district court with violating a
variety of pollution laws, destroying evidence and lying to the US
government. IP's leaders were able to plea bargain these charges down to
five felony convictions for criminal violations of the Clean Air Act and
Clean Water Act. They then arranged for IP's shareholders to pay $2.2
million in fines for their crimes.

  Today, IP continues to poison the people, plants and animals of
Maine by dumping 40 million gallons of chemically saturated wastewater daily
into the Androscoggin River. Georges and IP's directors still run the
corporation.

  How can this be?

  Under pressure from industrialists and bankers, a handful of
19th-century state legislatures and judges gave corporations more rights
than those enjoyed by human beings. Today's business corporation is an
artificial creation, shielding owners and managers while preserving
corporate privilege and existence by claiming special protections.

  Although the US Constitution makes no mention of corporations, the
history of constitutional law is, as former Supreme Court Justice Felix
Frankfurter said, "the history of the impact of the modern corporation upon
the American scene."

A Hidden History
British kings granted charters to the British East India Company, the
Hudson's Bay Company and many American colonies, enabling the kings and
their cronies to control property and commerce. The royal charter creating
Maryland, for example, required that all of the colonys exports be shipped
to or through Great Britain.

  The American colonists did not revolt simply over a tax on tea.
The laborers, small farmers, traders, artisans, seamstresses, mechanics and
landed gentry who sent King George III packing, feared corporations. As
pamphleteer Thomas Earle was to write in 1823: "Chartered privileges are a
burden, under which the people of Britain, and other European nations, groan
in misery."

  While American volunteers were routing the king's armies, they
vowed to put corporations under democratic command. After the revolution,
people were determined to keep investment and production decisions local and
democratic. They believed corporations were neither inevitable nor always
appropriate.

  Many colonial citizens argued that under the Constitution, no
business could be granted special privileges. Others worded that once
incorporators amassed wealth, they would use their corporate shields to
control jobs and production, buy off the press and dominate elections and
the courts.




American colonists feared corporations and vowed to put them under
democratic control




  Craft and industrial workers feared absentee corporate owners
would turn them into "a commodity being as much an article of commerce as
woolens, cotton, or yarn," according to historian Louis Hartz.

  Having thrown off British rule, the revolutionaries delegated
their elected state legislators to issue corporate charters on the people's
behalf. For 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
citizen vigilance and activism forced legislators to keep corporations on a
short civic leash.

  Because of widespread opposition to corporations, those early
legislators granted very few charters. They denied charters altogether when
communities opposed the plans of prospective incorporators.

  Citizens governed corporations by specifying rules and operating
conditions -- not just in the charters, but also in state constitutions and
laws. Incorporated businesses were banned from taking any action that
citizens and legislators did not specifically allow.

  States limited corporate charters to a set number of years.
Citizen authority clauses dictated rules for issuing stock, for shareholder
voting, for obtaining corporate information, for paying dividends and for
keeping records. They limited corporate capitalization, debts, land holdings
and sometimes profits. They required

DEFENDING PAT: SMEAR BY HISTORICAL ANALOGY
The smears keep coming – our elites, in media and politics, have whipped
themselves up into such a frenzy about Patrick J. Buchanan that they can hardly
let a day go by without unleashing yet another fusillade. The reason is all too
apparent: for, while there are many conservative politicians of one stripe or
another, and these do not usually fare too well in the liberal media, the
special hatred of PJB and his Buchanan Brigades is reserved for those who dare
to challenge our bipartisan policy of global interventionism. The liberal
elites are willing to forgive or overlook practically anything: you could be a
drunk, a cokehead, or a philanderer of major proportions, but for God's sake
don't let them catch you saying we ought not to expand NATO, don't even think
of saying that we should stop meddling in the Middle East, and please restrain
yourself from questioning the rationale for the Kosovo war. For then the knives
will really come out, and you can expect no mercy.

THE BIRTH OF A GENRE
What is truly astonishing is the sheer volume of literature that this
controversy has generated: what we are seeing is the creation of a whole new
literary genre, the Pat Smear, which seems to be taking the punditocracy by
storm. As the genre has grown, with new works being published every day –
indeed, it often seems like every hour – the phenomenon has evolved into
something more complex. Sub-genres have appeared, variations on the basic theme
of Pat as the reincarnation of Hitler, as the Art of Smearing Pat becomes more
sophisticated and reaches new heights – or is that depths?

THE NEW YORK POST AND THE ART OF SMEARING
My least favorite is the Basic Pat Smear, exemplified by the frothy-mouthed
raving of the New York Post. In style and content, the rantings of editorial
chieftain John Podhoretz and his crew resemble nothing so much as PM, published
by Marshall Fields in the 1930s, the long-defunct left-wing New York City
newspaper which spent much newsprint attacking isolationists – and, not
coincidentally, extolling the virtues of the Soviet Union. With Murdoch's deep
pockets, however – considerably deeper than Fields' – the Post is unfortunately
unlikely to meet a similarly deserved fate anytime in the near future. At any
rate, PM's method was simple: link the America Firsters to Nazism in the
crudest terms imaginable, by simple repetition. Tearing a leaf from the book of
Nazi propaganda as written by Goebbels and Julius Streicher, the idea was to
keep repeating a theme so crudely and relentlessly that it becomes accepted as
"fact" by default. The Post employs this method expertly, and as example of the
Basic Pat Smear we have a veritable masterpiece in the vitriolic Andrea Peyser,
who opines:

"Patrick Buchanan is a Ku Klux Klansman who masks his identity behind a smile
and a wink instead of a hood. He is an urbane Khalid Muhammad, David Duke with
a pedigree. Lately, we've hollered until we're hoarse over the handful of
crazies who've managed to grab the microphone in our midst. In the meantime,
Buchanan – a racist who scapegoats Jews for leading America down a path of
destruction – has been skulking in the daylight of America's mainstream."

WHADDAYA EXPECT?
After wiping the spittle off your face, look at the above paragraph and see how
the Basic Pat Smear operates. First rule: never offer any proof for your basic
thesis. It is a given that Pat is evil incarnate, and any attempt to justify or
offer even a shred of evidence will only hold you back from your main
objective: to smear. Besides, whom are you trying to impress? Do you think a
bunch of college professors are reading a newspaper that is two-fifths gossip,
two-fifths sports, with the rest divvied up between ads and propaganda?

BLINDED BY HATE
What is really amazing about this particular article, aside from the fact that
it manages to use up the entire repertoire of epithets beloved by the Smear Pat
Brigade, is its obliviousness to reality. Blinded by her hate for Pat, her mind
clouded by her own vitriol, Ms. Peyser reveals an astonishing fact, quoting
Anti-Defamation League official Abe Foxman as saying:

"Pat Buchanan is personally responsible for my being appointed to the United
States Holocaust Museum Council. What makes him even more dangerous is that
he's – quote, unquote – 'a nice guy.' Some of his best friends are Jews."

THAT'S GRATITUDE FOR YOU
As an example of how deluded some in the Smear Pat Brigade can get, we are
being asked to believe that Buchanan personally intervening on behalf of Foxman
– when he was being blackballed because he is a Democrat – is evidence of . . .
anti-Semitism! But how on earth can this be? Where oh where is the logic in it?
And how about that for gratitude?! Abe, you oughtta hang your head in shame.

I agree with most of your criticisms of Mr. Cooper.   As stated I forwarded
his post primarily because of the leading part of the article regarding
black market cigarettes.

Actually, there is no evidence I know of that Weihaupts 18th Century
Illuminati still exists.  Clearly the Illuminati to which you refer is not
really descendent from the original Illuminati.

Masons and Jews, however, do populate the higher circles of International
Banking in numbers that far outweigh their representation in the population.
This has been true for 100's of years.  The Anglophile blue blood rich and
powerful are often Masons as well as nominally Christian.  Masonry has been
an integral part of the British power structure since the Glorious
Revolution.

Jews have been prominent in banking for many Centuries appearing originally
as "Court Jews" recruited to act as ursurers and tax farmers for the King.
A handy scheme to divert public attention the extractive activities of Royal
Governements.  A quick look at the top firms in the City of London and Wall

Now we come very close to the true nub of the matter... A long time ago, in
the course of a discussion of secrecy and nonviolence, I proposed what I
called the "Sears Roebuck catalog approach to information security": publish
absolutely everything. Send copies of everything to everybody. Sure, the
plans for a neutron bomb might be in there somewhere, but unless you have a
very good index, odds are even the KGB wouldn't find them.

The Internet is, in fact, the safest place to keep information such as this,
provided you don't put up a sign pointing at it and saying, "This is
information but you're not allowed to look at it." The best search programs
(I use WebSeeker, from Blue Squirrel Software, which pulls from up to
thirteen different search engines) are still basically looking for keywords
and  tags. Most web designers deliberately put in such markers
specifically to attract search engines. But there is so much stuff on the
Web now that even a top search engine like Alta Vista will find no more than
about eighty percent maximum of relevant sites. So you can see that an awful
lot of information is out there "hidden" in plain view.

This has two important implications. First, since the Oligarchy depends in
information control to maintain its power, that power is in jeopardy because
the Web contains uncontrolled and, by virtue of its "open hiddenness,"
uncontrollable information. Second, and most important, we see here the
penultimate manifestation of Shannon's Law: Information is the negative
reciprocal of probability, I=-(1/p). The implication of this fundamental law
of information theory for us is this: *the more information you have in a
given system, the less certainty.* Strictly speaking, this refers to a state
such as a static-filled TV screen...since each pixel represents a unit of
information, static is maximum information, but it's also minimum certainty
as to what you're seeing. In such a situation, your mind tries to create its
*own* certainty by reading images into something that is really without form
and void.

This is closely analogous to the condition created by the Internet. There is
*so* much information out there (or rather out *here*) that no one can find
it all, let alone control it all. Different agencies, governmental and
private, are trying to control the information chaos, but by the very nature
of the phenomenon they will never be able to do so. The genie is out of the
bottle, and can never be put back in.

Frustrated fiddling with Christmas tree fairy lights could become a thing of
the past as genetic engineers have proposed a tree which grows its own
lights.

The idea for glowing pine needles was dreamed up by five postgraduate
students at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, as their entry in a
biotechnology competition.

It is a perfectly possible proposition, as genetic engineers elsewhere have
already created glowing mice, silk and potatoes.

'Only problem cost'

Neurophysiology student Katy Presland, 29, said: "We're talking about a
green luminescent Christmas tree that glows in the dark and produces a
noticeable light during the day.

"It is quite feasible. The only problem in reality is the cost," she added.

"We calculate that the initial trees would cost about £200, which means
going for the upper end of the market. But I'm sure a lot of people would
love them, especially the Americans."

Jellyfish and fireflies

The team detail a plan to modify a Douglas spruce with two genes to make it
illuminate. These would taken from fluorescent jellyfish and fireflies. The
first gene produces a substance called green fluorescent protein (GFP),
while the second results in an enzyme called luciferase.

The trees would be modified by infecting seedlings with a harmless bacterium
carrying the genes. A chemical compound called luciferin is needed to
activate luciferase, which in turn "switches on" GFP and makes it glow.

In the case of the luminous Douglas spruce, the luciferin would be mixed
into a special fertilizer sold with the tree.

The genes for green fluorescence have been widely used by genetic engineers
because they allows scientists to see at a glance whether an attempt to
introduce a gene into an organism has been successful.

Blue fluorescent proteins have also been discovered and, last month, a red
fluorescent protein was found in a coral. This means that, in theory, the GM
Christmas tree could grow its own multicoloured lights.

OSTON -- You are awakened by Immigration and Naturalization Service agents
knocking at your door. They tell you they are taking you into detention --
prison -- to be held for deportation. You say: "But I am an American
citizen. I can't be deported."

For the next three years you keep making that claim of citizenship. You want
it to be decided by a Federal judge, but they make you go through an
extended administrative process. You have no right to a Government-provided
lawyer if you cannot afford your own. And all this time you remain in
prison.

A fanciful scenario? Not at all. That is exactly what I.N.S. lawyers say
should happen to someone who is taken in for deportation and claims to be a
U.S. citizen. They take that position in a case now going on in Alaska.

Hawa Said, 21, was born in Yemen. Her parents were divorced, and her mother
left. When she was 1 year old, her father emigrated with her to the United
States -- to Anchorage, where he owns a watch-repair shop. In 1996 he became
a naturalized U.S. citizen. Under U.S. law, because she was under 18 she
automatically became a citizen, too.

Last year Ms. Said was convicted in the Alaska courts of a cocaine offense.
She was given a three-year sentence, all but 30 days suspended. This past
May she reported to jail to serve the time. Instead of being released at the
end, she was taken into custody by the I.N.S. as an "aggravated felon." The
1996 immigration law requires detention and deportation of such convicted
aliens. But Ms. Said said she was a citizen.

An Anchorage lawyer, Margaret D. Stock, took on the case. She sought the
classic remedy for someone wrongly imprisoned: a writ of habeas corpus.

Federal District Judge H. Russel Holland found last month that Ms. Said had
"made out a prima facie case" that she was indeed a citizen. But then, at
the urging of the I.N.S., he changed his mind and said she would have to
make that claim in an administrative deportation proceeding.

Ms. Said has now appeared before an immigration judge. If he decides against
her, she can go to the Board of Immigration Appeals. The next move is to the
U.S. Court of Appeals. But if it found facts in dispute, which it likely
would, it would have to send the case down to a U.S. District Court for
fact-finding. Then it would go back up to the Court of Appeals. While all
that went on -- three years is a minimum, probably understated -- Ms. Said
would remain in prison.

That tormenting process flies in the face of a notable Supreme Court
decision, the 1922 case of Ng Fung Ho v. White. A person of Chinese origin,
held for deportation, claimed to be a U.S. citizen. The Government said the
question should be decided administratively. The Court held that it must be
a decision for the courts.

Justice Louis D. Brandeis, writing for a unanimous Court, said the
Constitution entitled the claimant to a judicial decision, on habeas corpus,
of his citizenship. To deport someone who may be a citizen, he said, may
deprive him "of all that makes life worth living."

Could Congress, in the 1996 immigration law, sweep aside that constitutional
decision? Did it really mean to do so?

The case raises troubling issues of Government power. But there are also
human issues.

Ms. Said is seven months pregnant. After taking her into custody, the I.N.S.
sent her to a facility in San Diego, 2,427 miles away from her home and
family; it brought her back only when ordered to by Judge Holland. She is
held in a state prison with Alaskan criminals. She knows no one in Yemen and
speaks no Arabic.

The case of Hawa Said is an extreme example, but not the only one, of what
must be an I.N.S. mind-set. I always ask myself why immigration agents --
and I.N.S. lawyers -- feel they must grind their targets down so inflexibly,
so mercilessly. The new Immigration Act, harsh as it is, does not require
that level of inhumanity.

The Commissioner of Immigration, Doris Meissner, is a humane person. So is
her boss, Attorney General Janet Reno. But somehow they seem unwilling, or
unable, to infuse the immigration service with the quality of mercy, not to
mention respect for the Constitution.

New study claims data on pollutants worldwide are unreliable, and
that some may be less--or more--harmful than thought

ATHENS, Ga.-- Much of the information on pollution world-wide is
flawed at best and could be entirely wrong, according to a just-published
study, led by a visiting scientist at the University of Georgia. The
consequences of this oversight are beginning to threaten public health and
the environment, according the paper's senior author, research
microbiologist David Lewis.

The research specifically deals with chirality, a characteristic
exhibited by chemicals with asymmetric molecules. This asymmetry causes
molecules of the same chemical pollutant to exist as mirror images of one
another. Since many of the building blocks of living organisms, including
certain sugars, amino acids and proteins, are also chiral, the effects of
chiral pollutants depends on how well the toxic portions of the pollutant
fit together with molecules of living things.

"Our study emphasizes the fact that much of the historical
environmental data collected on pollutants is unreliable because so many of
the chemicals are chiral, and the data do not distinguish which
mirror-images of certain chemicals were present and which were harmful,"
said Lewis. "The good news is that many environmental pollutants including
some DDT derivatives, PCBs and plasticizers aren't as bad as previously
thought. On the other hand, steps taken to protect the environment, such as
using treated sewage sludge as a commercial fertilizer, will likely increase
the persistence of the more toxic forms of some pesticides."

The study was published today in the British journal Nature.

The entire issue revolves around molecular shapes and how the
environment affects the persistence of pollutants. When molecular shapes do
not permit a close fit, they cannot interact very well, and thus chemicals
with these molecules pose a less-serious threat to living things.

"It's like trying to shake someone's right hand with your left
hand," said Lewis.

The knowledge of which molecules are ill-fitting mirror-images or
enantiomers, as scientists call them, can be extremely helpful. Lewis points
out that 50 of the top 100 best-selling drugs (including barbiturates,
Ritalin and ibuprofen) are marketed after separating out the enantiomers
with harmful side-effects, such as the birth defects found three decades ago
with the drug thalidomide.

Many pollutants are also chiral, including some pesticides,
plasticizers and polychlorinated biphenyls--chemicals once used as
electrical insulators and which are now pervasive in the environment. The
problem, according the study, is twofold: first, very few chemicals now
considered major pollutants have been evaluated for their chirality at all,
and second, environmental changes appear to alter which mirror-images
persist in the environment by affecting soil microbes responsible for
breaking down the chemicals.
