My problem with the original post in this conversation is that of being
confused/mislead by the term 'text window' - which I took to be a
'window' (in the sense of an application window) presented by a text
application. My version of Linux Mint 20 names the 'command prompt'

I guess that 'lines' means the error messages that were displayed in the
command prompt window?. I did type them in my post, but I'll repeat them
here:

Hmm, very sorry and embarrassed about this; it's not intentional, just a
result of not having anybody advise me about this behaviour (until now),

While being gentle is good advice, this is a darktable list, but a basic linux
list.
A web search for "learn linux" would be of great assistance to Mr. Hamilton.

Ah, OK, thanks for the clarification. In another test I have invoked
darktable from the command line using the application name only with no
options or parameters. I then asked dt to import a newly created folder
of images which I have just copied from a network drive. Import

Really confused; what is this? Where is this text window? In

Do you know how to open a terminal window? If not, click on
"Applications", then type in "terminal" in the search box at the top.
That will put you at the Command Line Interface (CLI) where you can
enter the appropriate commands. Give it a shot.

I merely meant starting a shell, and using the 'darktable' command
there to launch the application, hoping that you'd get some error
message printed there when darktable freezes. I
You make a valid point: I had not seen the section on how to activate
OpenCL in dt, so I had not read it. I now have and have discovered that
OpenCL is not available in my system. The second paragraph of section
10.2.3 in the dt manual lists the requirements for OpenCL to be
available to dt. I

Not sure that I fully understand 'run from the command-line' to import a
file or a folder, but when I pass the address of a previously unseen
folder to darktable using CLI it opens that folder with no problem,
giving me darkroom access to all the included images. I don't see any
errors, but it

When run from the command-line, do you see any errors?
Do you use OpenCL? If yes, which card and driver?
What operating system?

For the past few weeks I have noticed that dt .3.2.1 freezes towards the
end of the import process, whether importing a file or a folder, from my
hard disk or from external media. Upon clicking the 'close app' icon I
get the message 'darktable failed to respond' (or words to that effect)
and I
