Bug#479665: update / libpoppler3

2008-05-28 Thread Andreas Bombe
I found that this bug does not appear in libpoppler3 (it reports the
unknown font tag but does not recurse infinitely) and so does not need
to be carried over when libpoppler2 gets removed.

Bug#483428: developers-reference: Vcs-{Svn,Browser} info are wrong

2008-05-28 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: developers-reference
Version: 3.3.9
Severity: normal

Hello,
the information in Vcs-{Svn,Browser} fields are wrong:

$ apt-cache showsrc developers-reference | egrep ^Version|^Vcs
Version: 3.3.9
Vcs-Browser: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/ddp/developers-reference/trunk?op=log
Vcs-Svn: svn://svn.debian.org/ddp/developers-reference/trunk

but

$ svn ls svn://svn.debian.org/ddp/developers-reference/trunk
svn: URL 'svn://svn.debian.org/ddp/developers-reference/trunk' non-existent in
that revision

Surfing a bit on http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/ddp/ it seems like this is
the right svn url (and then the web url):

pkgs.dbk
po4a/
resources.dbk

Please update accordingly the package information.

Bug#483424: [Juliusz Chroboczek] EXA and MigrationHeuristic

2008-05-28 Thread Juliusz Chroboczek
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+10

Forwarding this to bugs@, just to make sure Julien is sufficiently
annoyed to do something about it.

Juliusz
---BeginMessage---
Dear all,

After my recent adventures with Radeon, XAA and EXA, I've come to the
conclusion that setting MigrationHeuristic to greedy drastically helps
performance of Firefox redraws on both Radeon and i965GM hardware.

By drastically, I mean it -- a redraw of a full-screen Firefox goes
from 3 to 5 seconds (!) down to a fraction of a second.

Now I haven't read the sources of Firefox (let him who has cast me the
first stone), but I believe that Firefox performs client-side backing
store using absolutely humonguous pixmaps. While we may argue that
what Firefox does is stupid, I think we should try to support this
kind of usage.

Isn't the default value of MigrationHeuristic incorrect ? Should we
switch to greedy as default ? (Julien tells me that he believes that
Ubuntu have already made the switch.)

If somebody send us a working patch we will include it. Until now all
attempts failed, that is patches were breaking systems that won't
 need a workaround.

FYI, this works on kubuntu 8.04 with same self compiled Qt and KDE. Does
 ubuntu use extra glibc patches?

Ubuntu most probably uses patch #435646, which has too much issues to be
included in Debian.

Bug#482717: Latest gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg breaks gnome

2008-05-28 Thread jerome . marant

Is this on a PPC without altivec? Could you build gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
with debugging symbols and get a backtrace from

gst-inspect-0.10 --gst-disable-registry-fork

I think this is a ffmpeg bug but let's get a backtrace first :)

Hello,

It is indeed on PPC G3, hence without altivec.
I'm afraid I don't have enough time to take care of rebuilding the
whole stuff.

Up to now, I was using ffmpeg from debian-multimedia.org but I tried the
one from the debian archive and I get the same result.

I'm not sure it is a ffmpeg bug since the problem mentions the registry.

Regards,

Bug#483228: developers-reference: Section 5.11.6 - remove the bugs ack

2008-05-28 Thread Sandro Tosi
You could check for duplicates before filing new bugs... :-)

Oops, sorry: I did check for some of them, but this escaped from jail ;)

Also several of your bug reports concern uncontroversial changes and/or
typo/formatting fixes. Maybe you could go one step further and prepare a
 patch for those?

Mh, well, I don't have much free time, so I cannot guarantee anything
(number of patches, delivery dates or so), but I'll try to do some of
them. I'm sure someone else could help in fix this bug and have this
fundamental document in the good shape it deserves.

If you do, please prepare the patch against what's in SVN (see Vcs-Svn
 field in apt-cache showsrc developers-reference).

Well, if you wanted another bug (#483428), you'd just have to ask me :D

Cheers,
Sandro

Thanks.

A new version is available, please package it.

This version only works on Muck OS X. The Debian package is based on
the GNUstep port made some time ago; the changes are substantial and not
at all trivial. So unless you come up with a patch or someone from the
Debian GNUstep team finds time and motivation to do the porting work,
this bug is wontfix, regretfully.

Also, the project page on sourceforge now is the official one,

It has always been the official one, but we are explicitly refering to
the page of the GNUstep port because that is where we took the source
from. That page points to the official page, so I think it's fair.

Do you have any connection with the upstream developers, BTW? The main
author is not interested in GNUstep, IIRC, and the GNUstep porter did
not reply to any of my messages...

following lines regarding the VCS added to debian/control:

No, these fields are not for the upstream source but for the VCS where
the package is mainained in Debian. Once we import it in our Arch
repository at Alioth, the appopriate Vcs-Arch* will be added.

When dowgrading fontconfig, fontconfig-config and libfontconfig1 to
the version available in lenny (couldn't find any version built in

Bug#483438: dhcpd: no mechanism to use appropriate reverse zone

2008-05-28 Thread Anand Kumria
Package: dhcp3-server
Version: 3.1.1-1
Severity: normal
File: dhcpd

Hi,

I have a /24 split at two sites with reverse DNS appropriate partitioned
so that half (e.g. 192.168.7.0/25 and 192.168.7.128/25 -- used for
illustration btw not the actual IP addresses) is in zone:

0-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

and the other is in:

128-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

There appear no way to have the DHCP daemon update the correct reverse
zone. It will always try to update 7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.

Unfortunately setting ddns-rev-domainname does not help as that only put
a suffix on the reversed IP address. Nor does attempting to turn the
option into an evaluation expression like:

ddns-rev-domainname concat(binary-to-ascii(10, 8, ., suffix(leased-address,
1)), 0-25.7.168.192.in-addr.arpa.);

Since DHCP expects either a parameter or declaration.

Thanks,
Anand

There are some optional 2.6.25 kernel patches that would be nice
to have applied for the PS3. I will make a separate bug report
for those.

Update the Debian powerpc64 2.6.25 kernel config for Cell platforms.

Adds support for the PS3 game console and updates the
Cell blade config to support QS20 and QS21 machines.

Bug#482750: quilt: diff for NMU version 0.46-4.1

thanks

Hi,

I just uploaded an NMU to DELAYED/4-days. It fixes those 4 bugs and
several lintian errors/warnings. I subscribed to the PTS of quilt
and will follow any fallout of my NMU but it should be safe.

Martin, I still haven't got any answer from you concerning the maintenance
of quilt. It would be nice to hear back from you... there's some work to
push our patches upstream and since the new source package format that I
promote is based on quilt, its usage will increase in lenny+1. So it would
be nice to have an actively maintained package.

Attached is the diff for my quilt 0.46-4.1 NMU. Feel free to comment, I
can cancel the NMU at any time (or on the contrary move it to incoming
directly without further waiting).

Cheers,

Hello,

Same problem here. If I disable matroxfb, xorgs works fine again.
The bug happened after I upgraded kernel from 2.6.24.4 to 2.6.25.4.

Hope the fix will come soon because I need both, xorg and matroxfb ...

This looks like cifs not providing POSIX file system semantics. I

I agree that this is one possible interpretation of the problem, but
SQLite does *not* exhibit the same problem when it is run on Windows
clients using data directories that are network mapped via CIFS from
the same samba server. Instead, it is able to read and write the
testdb without a problem.

So either the sqlite build for Windows doesn't internally depend on
those filesystem semantics, or there's a way to work around them on
Windows. Maybe it's possible for SQLite in debian (and other unices)
to use the same workaround if it detects that it's working on CIFS?
Or maybe this is a bug in cifs.mount? Or maybe a bug in the kernel's
cifs.ko? Or in samba itself somehow? I'd be happy to get pointed in
the right direction about where to get started fixing this. (i'd be
even happier to be able to ditch CIFS, but that's not politically
feasible)

This bug is pretty serious because it's likely to strand users with
CIFS-exported home directories once Firefox 3 replaces Firefox 2.
It's already causing breakages in CIFS-homedir environments under
Ubuntu 8.04, and in debian with other apps that use SQLite
(e.g. f-spot, django, etc).

Thanks for the feedback and for any other direction or advice you can
give.

  Hello,

Adriaan Peeters wrote:
 Adriaan Peeters wrote:

I plan to have a look at that reasonably soon. I expect a lot of work
(from what I understood, it should be able to move to main) to get it in
 a good shape.

Getting batik in main is indeed what I would like since I will be able
to move some rdepends to main as well when 1.7 hits unstable.

I had a look, and things are not as simple as it seems - the 1.7
version does not provide at all the same external functions as before,
and still depends on some of sun.com classes, which is bad...

I hope you will find some time to work on this.

(consider this as another ping :))

I also hope I'll find some time. However, if you had time, I'm sure I
could find a way for you to spend it ;-)...

Please consider having this check verify that there are regular files in

Hmm, I wonder if it wouldn't be better for dh_md5sums to generate an
empty md5sums file in this case to make it clear that it checked but
found no files that needed to be listed.

Otherwise every other program that tries to use the information later
will need to check again. OTOH they probably need to check anyway since
an empty md5sums file also could be an error.

Package: linux-image-2.6-686
Version: 2.6.25+14

Maybe having a backup kernel in sid would be wise?:

Apparently there is now only one linux-image-2.6.*-*-686 available on
sid. Each time a new kernel comes out all older ones are removed.

This is nice except in the case where the user e.g., finds he can't
always boot with the new kernel. He was able to boot with it
yesterday, so removed his old one, but this morning it took several
boots to succeed, and now he wants to install back the earlier
kernel...

Also one wants to only have packages installed that are in the
archive, according to apt-show-versions.

Bug#483445: fretsonfire: Screensaver activates while playing with guitar controller

2008-05-28 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Package: fretsonfire-game
Version: 1.2.451.dfsg-2

I'm using fretsonfire on Ubuntu intrepid, and if I play the game using a
guitar controller for longer than the screensaver timeout, the
screensaver activates (in the middle of a song!). fretsonfire should
poke gnome-screensaver to ensure that it doesn't activate while playing.

Bug#483350: pperl: FTBFS: pperl: perl script failed to start: No such file or directory

2008-05-28 Thread Florian Weimer
* Lucas Nussbaum:

 Do you use Selinux?

 Yes

Does the policy permit creation access of UNIX domain sockets in the
sockets subdirectory?

Does the kernel support Unix domain sockets?

Yes. The kernel is the etch amd64 kernel.

Okay, I tried that, too ...

This version has been auto-built on i386 beofre, therefore I'm wondering
 what's wrong.

I don't know, but I just reproduced it on a different system.

... but I couldn't reproduce the failure, neither with GCC 4.2 nor with
GCC 4.3 (gcc version 4.3.1 20080523 (prerelease) (Debian 4.3.0-5)).

What shall we do now?

Hi,

SQLite works fine when used on most filesystems, but it seems to choke

This is a known 'bug'[1] in SQLite3. There is a workaround, quoting:
You can work around the problem by compiling with
-DSQLITE_DISABLE_DIRSYNC=1.

But the webpage also states: SQLite appears to be doing the right thing
here. The bug appears to be OpenWRT-Linux, not in SQLite.

Using the mentioned workaround is very risky:
That macro disables the directory syncing logic. But then if you lose
power at exactly the wrong moment and your rollback journal vanishes (or
gets moved to /lost+found) and your database is corrupted - don't
complain. I better solution, it seems, would be to fix OpenWRT-Linux..

As for now, I don't want to make this risk to all of our users, tagging
this bug as wontfix.

Bug#483450: /usr/share/bug/aptitude may produce data in an encoding reportbug does not expect

2008-05-28 Thread Michal Politowski
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.4.11.3-1
Severity: minor

It does not seem to be documented but reportbug reads the output of the
package bug scripts as utf-8.
The aptitude script runs aptitude --version in the current locale,
which may use a different encoding (and additionally may be quite
unreadable to the maintainer, though for this particular message it is
probably not even a minor issue).

Bug#483463: nvidia-cg-toolkit: Please allow pkg configuration using a local file

2008-05-28 Thread Sandro Tosi
Package: nvidia-cg-toolkit
Version: 2.0.0012.deb6
Severity: normal

Hello,
I'm on a slow connection and I cannot let the package postinst script
download the nvidia toolkit from web:

Setting up nvidia-cg-toolkit (2.0.0012.deb6) ...
Downloading
http://developer.download.nvidia.com/cg/Cg_2.0/2.0.0012/Cg-2.0_Jan2008_x86_64.tar.gz
on the amd64 architecture.
0KB [..dpkg: error processing nvidia-cg-toolkit (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)

I got to kill it, and manually launch:

# nvidia-cg-toolkit-installer --install\
  --toolkit-file /pendrive/debian/Cg-2.0_Jan2008_x86_64.tar.gz \
  --spec-file /pendrive/debian/Cg-2.0_Jan2008_LanguageSpecification.pdf

but the package remains unconfigured:

# grep -A 1 Package: nvidia-cg-toolkit /var/lib/dpkg/status
Package: nvidia-cg-toolkit
Status: install ok half-configured

So it would be nice if the postint prompts for a debconf choice to either
download or install from a local downloaded copy.

Thanks,
Sandro

PS: it would be even nicer if the package won't get reconfigured (thus
redownloading the file) at each new debian revision (.debX) but only
when upstream version bumps.

at http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.git/83101 - serves
me right for trying to get things done using a prerelease version of git.

Anyway, please take a look at

http://home.uchicago.edu/~jrnieder/gpm.git for-nico

once you get a chance. The 'upstream' corresponds to gpm-1-stable from
http://unix.schottelius.org/git/gpm. The for-nico branch contains
changes that I think should be pushed upstream.

Bug#482140: must be /etc/sgml

2008-05-28 Thread Xavi Drudis Ferran
Hi.

I'm sending my /var/lib/dpkg/info/docbook-xml.postinst

The line that's failing is the one after the initial for loop:

update-catalog --add --super /etc/sgml/docbook-xml.cat

In my /etc/sgml/catalog I already have a line with /etc/sgml/docbook-xml.cat

and it's also in /etc/sgml/catalog.old

I'm attaching a tarball of /etc/sgml (before playing with the scripts)

But the .prerm script looks like it should have removed the docbook-xml.cat
entry.
In fact it does if I run it with upgrade as an argument

In my /var/log/dpkg.log it looks like docbook-xml 4.4-5 was installed, and
afterwards
and upgrade to 4.5-5 was attempted but it was left half-configured

So my only guess is that maybe the prerm script in docbook-xml 4.4-5 did not
run update-catalog --quiet --remove --super /etc/sgml/docbook-xml.cat
for some reason ?

Maybe the bug is in etch, not lenny, but it can be worked around in lenny ?

I can't seem to understand anything more, so I'm removing and installing the
package to
continue the instalation.

Hope this helps somehow...

Bug#483458: ITP: python-buzhug -- pure-Python database engine, using a Pythonic, no-SQL syntax

2008-05-28 Thread Luciano Bello

* Package name: python-cluster
  Version : 1.1.1b3
Upstream Author : Michel Albert exhuma at users.sourceforge.net
* URL : http://python-cluster.sourceforge.net/
* License : LGPL
Description : allows grouping a list of arbitrary objects into related
groups (clusters)

python-cluster is a simple package that allows to create several groups
(clusters) of objects from a list. It's meant to be flexible and able to
cluster any object. To ensure this kind of flexibility, you need not only to
supply the list of objects, but also a function that calculates the similarity
between two of those objects. For simple datatypes, like integers, this can be
as simple as a subtraction, but more complex calculations are possible. Right
now, it is possible to generate the clusters using a hierarchical clustering
and the popular K-Means algorithm. For the hierarchical algorithm there are
different linkage (single, complete, average and uclus) methods available.

Bug#483462: dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5 tries to overwrite file owned by dvi2ps

2008-05-28 Thread Ralf Treinen
Package: dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5
Version: 0.3.2
Severity: serious

Hi,

automatic installation tests of packages that share a file and at the
same time do not conflict by their package dependency relationships has
detected the following problem:

Selecting previously deselected package dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5.
Unpacking dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5 (from
 .../dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5_0.3.2_all.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/dvi2ps-fontdesc-morisawa5_0.3.2_a ll.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite `/usr/share/texmf/dvi2ps/fontsk/bikan-morisawa',
which is also in package dvi2ps

This is a serious bug as it makes installation fail. Possible
solutions are to have the two packages conflict, to rename the common
file in one of the two packages, or to remove the file from one
package and have this package depend on the other package. File
diversions or a Replace relation are another possibility.

This bug could in principle be filed against any of the two packages.
I might have made the wrong choice in filing the bug against your
package, in this case please feel free to reassign to the other
package.

-Ralf.

Bug#482869: lintian: no-md5sums-control-file false positive on package containing only conffiles

Frank Lichtenheld [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Hmm, I wonder if it wouldn't be better for dh_md5sums to generate an
empty md5sums file in this case to make it clear that it checked but
found no files that needed to be listed.

Otherwise every other program that tries to use the information later
will need to check again. OTOH they probably need to check anyway since
an empty md5sums file also could be an error.

We do already have code that's supposed to check whether an md5sums
control file is needed. It apparently isn't working right. (Naively, I
would have thought that files in /etc would still have md5sums in the
package? I'm probably just confused.)

Bug#483461: php5-cli: use_embedded_timezonedb.patch php5 patch causes segmentation faults when tzdata not installed

2008-05-28 Thread fatz
Package: php5-cli
Version: 5.2.6-1
Severity: important

When /usr/share/zoneinfo does not exist, this patch attempts to free() on
unallocated memory, causing PHP to cease functioning. The problem comes
from:
314 free(ents);
Earlier, ents set via:
110 count = php_scandir(name, ents, index_filter,
php_alphasort);

Name is typically /usr/share/zoneinfo. If the directory
/usr/share/zoneinfo does not exist, ents is set to -1, but line 314 still
attempts to free it, causing the problem.

tzdata does not appear to be a requirement for php5, so there is no
guarantee that this directory would exist.

He was able to boot with it
yesterday, so removed his old one, but this morning it took several
boots to succeed, and now he wants to install back the earlier
 kernel...

Keep a kernel that you know works installed then.

Also one wants to only have packages installed that are in the
 archive, according to apt-show-versions.

Sounds like a personal conflict for you, not Debian users in general.

 Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on
 i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3
is now the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on
i386 yet). Consequently, many failures are caused by the switch to gcc
 4.3.
If you determine that this failure is caused by gcc 4.3, feel free to
downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built on i386,
and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
 gcc 4.2).

It's related to the length of the name of the build directory. Somehow,

And please make a copy of this fdi-cache file before you delete it. So
we can investigate it further, if it's a problem of the cache file.

But it's really obvious in retrospect: the sun_path field in an
sockaddr_un structure has only got 108 bytes or so to store the path.

I'm not sure if I should simply label your build environment as broken,
or if I need to move the sockets directory to some place with a shorter
path name.

As I suspected, the problem is a macro error, not an actual
 limit.

Ah, thank you. I didn't investigate this, since I assumed that the
PostgreSQL documentation must have been built successfully on some other
system.

With \tracingall, the run ends with the output below.

We cannot fix this: the enlarging limits will just result in a
capacity exceeded message with a higher counter.

Hm, can you give me a short hint

- what tells you that it's a macro error, and

- where the error probably is?

I can't quickly interpret the \tracingall output, (probably also because
I usually just use single \tracingfoo commands). I guess I could figure
out with some effort, but since you seem to have seen it already,
please?

TIA, Frank

 Best wishes,
 Taco
