Install Party Debian Etch 5/5/2007 Paris
As the newbie to that particular team, I was under significant pressure to upgrade to Fedora or SuSE. Debian needs to reclaim the respect of upstream development teams and part of that is making it *a lot* easier to do upstream development on Debian without needing to become a DD as well. Debian is respected as a distribution for users because of the multiple architecture support and the patches and bug reports that are forwarded upstream - what is missing (IMHO) is respect for Debian as the distribution of choice for upstream development itself. Are you generalising from your one poor personal experience with a non-Debian-friendly upstream, or do you have a significant body of data that I don't about masses of upsteams who are not Debian friendly? Generalising - which probably isn't giving me the best overview, you're right. My impression has always been that a significant proportion of upstreams use Debian, or are at least familiar with it. I base this on, amoung other things, interacting with hundreds of different upstreams whose packages I have maintained in Debian, as well as working in linux companies and personally knowing a lot of upstream developers. Do you then think that Debian should not require basic API docs if upstream don't provide them - even if the information is available (and properly distributable) from outside the .orig ? The only significant documentation that is missing in Debian that I know of is GFDL licensed docs which have been removed from main. Aside from that, if a library is missing documentation, it's missing it because it's not available upsteam either. The 'big' libraries are very well documented, it's the smaller ones. Individually these may not be significant but collectively, I think there is an appreciable gap in the API docs. Recently, I've been working with libarchive (deb-gview) and libgtkhtml (gtk2 port of quicklist). libarchive has nicely commented headers which could be turned into HTML but aren't, libgtkhtml has only a test program. (I've missed one -doc package myself - just noticed that libgpewidget can build a -doc package so that's just gone on the ToDO list along with a few wishlist bugs for the above packages.) Maybe instead of seeking API docs as a requirement it would be better to seek a section under Best Practise that outlines how man (3) can be used to provide at least an introduction to the API when the .orig does not contain docs itself? -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgpNFcyopAoRV.pgp Description: PGP signature

RFA: tikiwiki -- groupware and content management system
retitle 370592 RFA: tikiwiki -- groupware and content management system thanks I am looking for someone to take over maintenance of Tikiwiki. The package works nicely and does not take much time to maintain. However I don't use it anymore, and also I'm a bit frustrated with the lack of progress upstream on the a long-standing RC bug, a licensing issue [3] related to non-free icons. (Upstream has expressed intention to replace those icons with free ones.) The package has had a string of security issues [1], and security fixes were not always coordinated with packagers in a timely manner. There is an Alioth project [2] and a mailing list for coordinating the packaging, but nobody has been willing to work on it much. Unless someone steps forward to maintain it, I am going to shut down the Alioth project and possibly request removal of the package from the archive due to the unresolved licensing issue. However modifying gdb sounds like a lot of hard work. I don't know how Apport works on the server side, but if this part of Apport could be made to run on the client and to fetch the relevant files, this might have all advantages of not sending the sensitive core dumps, not uploading too much data, and being available without too much development. -- Loïc Minier -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. But I do not really regard this as a really nice solution if those extra tasks are mixed with the default Debian tasks. Note that you can hide the debian tasks by diverting debian-tasks.desc. This could probably be improved. Well, I know the diversion concept but it just does not fit what I regard reasonable. The default tasksel list is OK, but needs a feature to add the tasks that were prepared inside Debian in a structured way. You can also set your custom tasks to have a higer Relevance than the standard tasks, to make them be displayed first in the list. I would regard the default as higher relevance and below this come CDDs (in general). So also this feature does not fit my idea of selecting a task - it might be that my idea is a missconception, but there was no argument up to know that convinced me that I'm wrong. Kind regards Andreas. Hi Andreas, It seems to me that the problems you describe in Tasksel are fixable only if you sacrifice the simplicity of the default installer. Don't get me wrong, the idea that all CDD's could be represented within a single tasksel system does sound nice, but it makes building the iso images for the installers impossible. If the user can select an essentially infinite number of tasks from the one interface then the installer would require a disk image too large for CD media. However if the installer CD ISO generation system used something like jigdo, you might be able to make CDD install disks easier and not have to change the default installer images. This would require the CDD team to assure that the default packages for the CDD do not require more than 650-700MB of space on the iso when added to the base system. Joey, this would potentially require the installer build system to use jigdo. Does that seem practical to you, or is it not feasible? Should I direct this question to Frans? I would be very interested in seeing Debian produce variable installed versions based on CDD. This would be similar to the varied versions of other distributions (home, business, and server class versions), and would allow lots of flexibility for derived distributions. However having varied releases based on target use might not be desirable for the project. There are many possible trade offs with either approach and a jigdo driven debian-installer image builder would probably require some serious work. On the other hand debian-installer is building installer images for KDE and XFCE now so how much of a stretch is it to build CDD driven installer images as well? Just some thoughts... Have a nice day, That is an interesting idea, and I am sorry I didn't see your suggestion in the thread. Although if you are going to display the tasks based on condition of available packages, it might be reasonable to not display the task at all if it's dependencies are not met. However, if you choose to display them in a disabled state it might be good to provide a note on how to enable them in the task selection dialog. Such that disabled tasks can be enabled if you choose a network mirror or add the appropriate CD media during the install. This might be a bit obtuse and could be confusing to new users. IIRC, the tasksel dialog appears well after apt configuration so it might not be a suitable solution. The biggest concern I have with my own idea, is that existing tasks would not be maintained by the tasksel maintainers and therefore would need more collective QA work. The trade-off is that you get people from the CDD team to help maintain their specific task. This promotes the internal team leadership model, but is this a good time or place to test that model? I think so, but I am sure others would disagree. Thanks, Matthew -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The dumps can be huge (for desktop applications they often grow beyond 200MB) and they can contain gazillions of sensitive information. Sending core dumps is of course debatable, espec. if you cannot assert that no sensitive information is transmitted. Still, Apport is more than that. It also describes the mechanism of debug packages (*.ddeb), which are generated automatically at build time. Using a central server for symbol lookup like Ben proposed looks like a better idea. It needs gdb to be adapted or wrapped to access them correctly, though. Sure. How about generating ddebs like ubuntu at build time, upload them to ftp-master along the regular binary packages, and install them in a special section on the ftp servers. This way not all mirrors need to serve the ddebs. We can still leave the choice: sending in core dumps to some centralised service which retraces them, or use provided tools so users can download the debug data and retrace their crashed on their own. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. It is an instance of the xUnit architecture for unit testing frameworks. JUnit 4 uses Java 5 features such as generics and annotations. If you need compatibility with previous Java versions, you should use the junit package (version 3) instead. (Generics and annotations are the reason why this needs currently needs to go to contrib. Scribit Michelle Konzack dies 24/04/2007 hora 16:40: I would suggest to add a new header like Crypted: gpg_key and then crypt the data.tar.gz (in the Debian package). I think you're targetting the wrong layer of the system. If many packages contain so much sensitive data, it would be easier to encrypt a tarball or part of a FS where packages are read. As far as D-I is concerned, you could probably easily add a udeb to deal with decrypting and unpacking of that senstive part, and leave apt and dpkg untouched. On the other hand, if not all the Debian package is sensitive, you better be encrypting data inside it, and have the application or an helper decrypt it when needed, maybe in maintainer scripts.
