Nobody was hooked :), that's good, because it's nonsense, resp. a
provocation. But indeed, people died because of the politic, so IMO
stealing data is less an issue, than other issues we've got on our
planet. I wonder that nobody writes endless mails about starvation and
wars and when there is the comparison between the USA and China, keep in
mind that there is more serious wrongness in China, than in the USA.

We can't protect ourself against living in a country were hunger is an
issue, we can't protect ourself against wars, but we can protect ourself
against data robbery, by not providing important data by the Internet.

Re: Printer brand recommendations

2013-09-09 Thread Ross Boylan
Short version: Brother doesn't support linux. I'm considering Lexmark.

I too am looking for a B+W laser printer. I just got a Brother HL 5450 to
replace a 5150 I had. It fails to print some pages, and I'm sending it
back because Brother says they do not provide phone support for Linux.
They used to have an email address for linux, but a query there produced no
answer. It's supposed to be postscript compatible; since there are issues
I wonder if that's in software rather than hardware.

I'm considering Lexmark now; I used to have one of their printers and the
quality of their support impressed me. I switched because I was hoping to
need less support! They seem to support linux, as well as many other OS's.

I got an HP inkjet that I never was able to get to work, despite talking to
tech support. It was a network printer than seemed to bring its network
interface down when it slipped and it wouldn't come back up without a power
cycle. Perhaps I'm overgeneralizing, but it soured me on HP.

Maybe I'll try a color laser, though Consumer Reports says they don't have
good print quality for photos.

When I search on *bay, eg for USB3 card, esata devices etc, I often
add in "linux" as some suppliers specifically advertise linux support.
That usually gets a few choices which, at the least, advertise linux
support. Bought firewire cardbus I think some years back. More
recently just expresscard usb and sata stuff.

Also, by including "linux" in my search, I support those suppliers who
even bother with a knowledge of linux and that it might require
support.

Good luck

ExpressCard and FireWire recommendations

2013-09-09 Thread Rick Valenzuela
Hi all,

I'm going to need an ExpressCard FireWire port to use with an older
video camera and a Toshiba R930 laptop. Does anyone have any
recommendations for FW ExpressCards?

I don't know if there a lot of variation or troubleshooting involved
with Linux and FireWire, or with ExpressCard slots, but a search on this
list did not show much.

I'm running Debian Jessie.

Cheers,
Rick

You could perhaps increase the quality of suggestions by (if you are
able) being more specific about what you want to achieve with the
printer (volume, color, portability etc).

I have used openprinting a lot. I find it very useful.

We've had very good success with second hand Lexmark t522 b/w laser,
however they are getting a little long in the tooth now. Awesomely low
per-page ink cost.
The only trick might have been extracting the .PPD file from the
windows driver. For postscript printers, it's pretty much a guarantee
you can get it to work by locating the PPD.

Had a bit rougher experience with second hand Ricoh c420 printers;
every about 30 pages, it goes through a 1.5minute "calibration". Ink
costs are fine, and it's a color laser.

Good luck

I was a strong HP fan for years, to the point that when a printer died I
would only look at HP replacements. After a couple of short-lived HPs
in a row, I broadened my horizons to take at least a token look at other
brands -- and brought home an Epson Workforce 645 all-in-one which is
behaving like HPs used to. It's reliable, the cartridges last a long
time, the tray holds a *lot* of paper... just a good piece of
equipment.

Regarding openprinting.org: many/all the forum links refer to a domain
that does not exist, registration has been disabled or is broken
(depending on which of the ~3 possible registration URLs you try), and
at least some printer information is incorrect. I know of one
specific printer (Lexmark E360dn) that is marked as a color printer
working perfectly but is neither. I left a comment about this in the
past, but the comment is gone now without an updated entry.

Here is the link that perhaps should work for registration:
.  But I get a
server error when trying to login using those credentials after
successfully registering.

This site should be taken down or fixed.

If anyone wants to, you could send a message to the Linux Foundation
about the site.  See
for contact information; you will notice an address "openprinting (at)
linuxfoundation dot org" for correspondence regarding the OpenPrinting
site. I might try sending a message sometime.

You might want to have a look at apt-src or apt-build. I seem to
recall that apt-build can build cross-platform packages, maybe apt-src
can too. I haven't used either of those to cross-build, so this is
only an educated guess, nothing more.

Now that I see that man works for the functions and macros and not for
the header name (But why wouldn't man-k pick that up?), I do a "man
pow" and notice there is a powl() function that looks like it might
work but maybe doesn't:

---
#include
#include

#include
#include

int main( int argc, char * argv[] )
{
   double temp;
   long double ltemp;

   printf( "max double digits: %d, double exponent %d\n", DBL_DIG,
DBL_MAX_10_EXP );
   printf( "max double value: %Lf\n", (long double) DBL_MAX );

   temp = pow( 2, 2000 );
   ltemp = powl( 2, 2000 );
   printf( "2^2000 as double: %f\n", temp );
   printf( "2^2000 as long double: %Lf\n", ltemp );
   ltemp = ltemp + 1.0;
   printf( "2^2000 + 1 as long double: %Lf\n", ltemp );

   return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}
---

which prints out the value of 2^2000 okay, but fails to increment it.

Which makes sense, since we have no reason to believe long double ever
gets 2000 bits of significance, but powers of two should be accurately
stored up to the limit of the exponent.

Thus the need for GMP or MPFR or similar libraries. (Or you can just
do it in python. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Multi-Precision_Library

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPFR

I note:

cat /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.7/include/float.h

a constant, DEC_EVAL_METHOD,

#undef DEC_EVAL_METHOD
#define DEC_EVAL_METHOD2

might force "all operations and constants to the range and precision
of the _Decimal128 type", which might be of interest for compiling
environments which do not make long doubles longer than doubles -- a
kind of "last chance" on those systems. Unless he only needs the
constant, and doesn't need precision/accuracy, the OP is going to want
GMP or MPFR or the like, if python can't do his job.

Since I seem to be convincing myself against my better judgment that I
have time, and since I've always wanted to play with the
multiprecision stuff, I'm going to install libgmp-dev and read the
website

http://gmplib.org/

and risk stealing the OP's opportunity for learning.

in Switzerland was looking for a printer recommendation, pointed out
that HP printers are no longer the Sherman tanks they used to be, and
that they may no longer be built to last; also that HP does not support

you may not even find a manual. (OTOH, I can still get replacement toner
units for a 12 year old LaserJet 2200dn, even tho I can't get any info

It's quick, it prints, copies, faxes, scans, and has usb, Ethernet and
wireless interfaces. (And a phone connection for fax.) Does duplex, of
course. I do a fair amount of printing, and I don't need new cartridges
very often. It uses four cartridges, CMYK, so if you mostly print black,
that will be the only one you need to replace. The color is very good,
both from the net and scanned in. For B&W images, it's about on a par
with the LaserJet. And Epson has Linux drivers on their website for all
their printers and scanners, in both deb and rpm formats. Someone on the
other list found the WP-4530 for $189 on Amazon.
I have no financial or other interest in Epson.

group share directory using ACL's

2013-09-09 Thread David Christensen

debian-user:

I am attempting to set up a "group share" directory where any user
(local or via Samba) can create, copy, and move files and directories
and every other user has full access to those files and directories.
This directory will be shared via Samba.

STFW I found various posts that demonstrate using ACL's to achieve the
desired effect.

Here is a Bourne shell script that creates a system user (and group)
"groupshare" and attempts to create a directory with the desired
functionality "/mnt/z/data/Groupshare":

#!/bin/sh

set -o nounset
set -o errexit

DIR=/mnt/z/data/GroupShare
USERNAME=groupshare

if `grep -q $USERNAME /etc/passwd`; then deluser --system $USERNAME; fi
if `grep -q $USERNAME /etc/group`; then delgroup --system $USERNAME; fi
if [ -d $DIR ]; then rm -rf $DIR; fi

adduser --system --group --no-create-home $USERNAME
mkdir $DIR
chown $USERNAME:$USERNAME $DIR
chmod 0777 $DIR
chmod g+s $DIR
setfacl -m d:u::rwx,d:g::rwx,d:o::rwx,d:m:rwx $DIR

Running the script gives me a directory with the following ACL settings:

$ getfacl /mnt/z/data/GroupShare
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: mnt/z/data/GroupShare
# owner: groupshare
# group: groupshare
# flags: -s-
user::rwx
group::rwx
other::rwx
default:user::rwx
default:group::rwx
default:mask::rwx
default:other::rwx

The directory works as intended if I create files and directories --
e.g. the GroupShare default ACL is applied to the new files and directories:

$ touch /mnt/z/data/GroupShare/foo

$ mkdir /mnt/z/data/GroupShare/bar

$ ll /mnt/z/data/GroupShare
total 12
drwxrwsrwx+ 3 groupshare groupshare 4096 2013/09/09 16:19:27 ./
drwxr-xr-x  7 root   root   4096 2013/09/09 16:18:51 ../
drwxrwsrwx+ 2 dpchrist   groupshare 4096 2013/09/09 16:19:27 bar/
-rw-rw-rw-+ 1 dpchrist   groupshare0 2013/09/09 16:19:20 foo

However, the directory doesn't work as intended if I copy or move files
(and directories) -- e.g. the source document ACL overrides the
GroupShare default ACL:

$ touch foo2

$ cp foo2 /mnt/z/data/GroupShare/.

$ touch foo3

$ mv foo3 /mnt/z/data/GroupShare/.

$ ll /mnt/z/data/GroupShare
total 12
drwxrwsrwx+ 3 groupshare groupshare 4096 2013/09/09 15:58:52 ./
drwxr-xr-x  7 root   root   4096 2013/09/09 15:57:50 ../
drwxrwsrwx+ 2 dpchrist   groupshare 4096 2013/09/09 15:58:29 bar/
-rw-rw-rw-+ 1 dpchrist   groupshare0 2013/09/09 15:58:24 foo
-rw-r--r--  1 dpchrist   dpchrist  0 2013/09/09 15:58:34 foo2
-rw-r--r--  1 dpchrist   dpchrist  0 2013/09/09 15:58:45 foo3

Does anybody know how to force the GroupShare directory default ACL to
be applied on copy and move?

TIA,

David

Rip out cmd/sid/pid matching since its unfixable broken and stands

Is this KDE specific? I don't have KDE installed.

I've used Epson with success, but won't another one. The cost of the
cartridges is so high, it's like I'm buying the printer over and over
again every year. They got taken to court by a class action suit and
lost, but the "award" to the plaintiffs was a couple coupons to spend on
their cartridges.  :^\

My next printer is probably going to be an HP.

HP cartridges are also very expensive -- $100+. So:

1.  I bought a black-and-white printer (1 cartridge), rather than color
(4 cartridges).

2. I buy high capacity generic cartridges (~$30).

manpages-dev is loaded on my machine. But digging in, I see something
about glibc-doc. Using synaptic because I'm lazy, I see that glibc-doc
has been split, and glibc-doc-reference contains most of the
documentation for glibc. Split because of license issues, it says. And
glibc-doc is in the usual repository, but glibc-doc-reference is not.

So I enable contrib and non-free because it's late and I don't care
which one has glibc-doc-reference and now I can load
glibc-doc-reference.

But still no response when I do "man float.h" or "man -k DBL_DIG" or
"info DBL_DIG".

man fgetc

works. So does

info fgetc

My memory is that it worked with only manpages-dev installed. But even
with glibc-doc-reference installed, nothing on the macros in limits.h
or float.h. Or locale.h. But

man HUGE_VAL

brings up the man page for the constants in math.h. And I think it did
with just manpages-dev.

I wonder what gives here.

building from source for different arch

2013-09-09 Thread Lucio Crusca
Hi,

I'm trying to build opus package from source for both amd64 and i386, after
having applied the patch by Pino Toscano I've found here:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=674467

What I've done so far is:

  $ apt-get source opus
  # apt-get build-dep opus
  $ patch -Np1 < .../opus-multiarch.diff
  ...
  all ok
  $ dpkg-buildpackage
  ...
  all ok
  $ dpkg-buildpackage -ai386
  ...
  Can't exec "i486-linux-gnu-objcopy": No such file or directory at
  /usr/share/perl5/Debian/Debhelper/Dh_Lib.pm line 218.

And here I'm stuck. The missing file i486-linux-gnu-objcopy seems to belong to
no package (http://packages.debian.org finds no packages containing files with
similar names). However I'm not sure I've done things right, maybe I'm not
supposed to build the 32bit package that way...

I'm running Jessie amd64.

How to setup notify-osd

2013-09-09 Thread 斟酌鵬兄
I got these errors when trying to start the daemon:

** (notify-osd:4791): WARNING **: dbus_create_service_instance(): Got error
"Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application
did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply,
the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."

** (notify-osd:4791): WARNING **: Could not register instance

I don't know how to fix it.
I've removed package notification-daemon but it seems gnome is still using
it when I run:

What do I do now?

Re: How to setup notify-osd

2013-09-09 Thread 斟酌鵬兄
I am using wheezy and gnome 3.
I just did a little research on google that I think this is somewhat
related to dbus?
(althought I don't know what it does. but the output there has a line
contains dbus_create_service_instance? )

This is the related bug report:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=640120

However at the end it said it is fixed in version 0.9.32.
But I have the version:
notify-osd:
  Installed: 0.9.34-2
  Candidate: 0.9.34-2

Do I need to modify the file in here?
/etc/xdg/autostart/notify-osd.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Notify OSD
Comment=Display notifications
Exec=/usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd
Terminal=false
Type=Application
OnlyShowIn=LXDE;OPENBOX;GNOME;XFCE;
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false

Sorry for didn't provide much information. I was just frustrated to find
the solution:(

Ken's message had this line:

"NOTE: pid, sid and command matching are broken on SMP"

SMP is symmetric multiprocessing[1] and the kernel I have is using it.
You can see what kernel you are running with 'uname'

uname -a

Vincent's link suggests that --cmd-owner was removed from iptables
entirely. It would be important to find a more authoritative source on
that like the netfilter list or the kernel list. But for now, it is
enough to know that your particular version does not have it. You'll
have to find another way.

Apache2 neds to ne reset

2013-09-09 Thread John W. Foster
I have an installation of Apache2 that is misconfigured & no longer
works. Over the last couple of years Apache has become bloated & hard to
manage so I tried using webmin to work out the kinks. My lack of
experience has caused me to totally screw up my web server so I want to
enlist some assistance. I want to know first of all if there is a way,
Command line perhaps, to have apt completely reinstall all of Apache2
with the dist basic files so that it works upon startup, then I can try
to reconfigure it manually. This would require removing all the old
config files during the installation. I have tried using synaptic to
reinstall it and it uses the old configs files, plus I don't know where
all of them are hiding to delete them.
Once before I had a similar issue, and to get rid of Apache to reinstall
it I had to manually delete every reference to Apache, then it worked,
however I also had to rebuild most of my entire Debian installation as
Apache is very integrated into the requirements for many applications.
Any suggestions please.
Thanks!
john

One way would be to remove the package apache2 and then move the config
files out of the way. Then reinstall apache2 to get the default
settings back.

apt-get remove apache2
mv /etc/apache2/ /etc/apache2.old/
apt-get install apache2

That allows you to at least use the old, broken config files as
references.

What can one think about this? Here is part of Universal Declaration of

"No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy,

family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and
 ^

such interference or attacks."

Breaking this, the USA becomes thereby a cyberterrorist [2] country,
which breaks our base rights.

I think, that the USA is freeze in could war, but they forgot, that
they are braking not only enemies communication, but they are breaking
privacy as all.

I don't want to depend on the fact, if i am target or not. I am
expecting, that fair people will respect my privacy (and my human
rights). I don't want to demonstrate my blamelessness by allowing (or
tolerating) that activities. I don't want to be a part of these
activities by tolerating them!

One another problem is, that if these activities are incoming from
China - anybody know, that this is bad. But if the same things are
incoming from USA, a lot of people can consider them as OK :-(

I hope, that here will be one good point of these things - that people
will stop using the big companies (because breaking some big companies

But really, i don't believe, that the USA really break SSL/TLS

CA, ...) only. But beside this, they are opening the Pandora's box.
Yesterday was Mr. Snowden taking (and publicize) documents, tomorrow can
someone take and abuse the keys. The USA totally breaks the trust
system. No one can trust, that the certificate is real, no one can
trust that it is really talking with its bank, with its friends, etc.

At any rate, anybody, who is using services, which are under USA law,
become (privacy's) exhibitionist from these days.

But anyhow, thanks to Mr. Snowden, that my paranoia has a name now ;-)

Re: Printer brand recommendations

2013-09-09 Thread Beco
Hi guys,

Please allow me to revive this thread. (Let me know if its better to
start a new one)

I'm in need of help to find a new printer. My current printer (Samsung
SCX4200 stopped working since Wheezy upgrade. I already asked here
about the issue and tried to correct it with no success.)

Now, its very tricky to find a good gnu-linux/debian compatible
printer. My experience tells me to first look the stores, to see what
they have. And only then to look if its compatible.

I'm using this site to see compatibility.

http://www.openprinting.org/printers

Is this a reliable source of information? Do you have any other
(pratical) suggestion?

Also, in my reach, I found for now three I'm willing to buy.

HP LaserJet Pro P1102w

Black & White laser printer, max. 600x600 dpi, works Mostly SCORE: 2 penguins
Recommended Driver: foo2zjs-z2 (Home page)
Generic Instructions: CUPS, LPD, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, no spooler

Samsung ML-2165W
(This site does not have it! RED FLAG!)

Epson M105 Series

Color inkjet printer (WRONG, its BLACK only here), max. 5760x1440 dpi,
works Perfectly  SCORE: 3 penguins.
Recommended Driver: epson-201215w (Home page, Driver packages: x86 32
bit: 1.0.0 (RPM for LSB 3.2) (Signed), 1.0.0 (DEB for LSB 3.2)
(Signed), x86 64 bit: 1.0.0 (RPM for LSB 3.2) (Signed), 1.0.0 (DEB for
LSB 3.2) (Signed) (How to install))
Generic Instructions: CUPS, LPD, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, no spooler

Do you have any information and/or recommendation regarding this printers?

Do you suggest any other similar that I might try to find in stores nearby?

(Preferable laser / wifi. Color not needed.)

Thank you!

Beco

I suppose it could be rational to believe in a god that doesn't
already know all the prime factors of all the keys, but I can't
imagine paying attention to any god that couldn't at least calculate
them in real time.

But even if talking about god or gods is too confusing, even if we
limit the discussion to ultimate reality, the keys and the factors
exist in the real world. Talking about the real world knowing the keys
may be confusing, but you have to understand the difference between
hidden and non-existent.

Too much of our standard system administration practice treats hidden
things as if they magically don't exist in the context of the people
from whom they are supposed to be hidden. That only works when said
people cooperate.

In the context of this thread, the NSA and the US government is
behaving this way. That doesn't mean we should cooperate.

(And there is a conundrum in there, and it needs to be looked at
carefully, but if I point it out, people don't look at it at all.)

You give us *full* information, like what version of debian? What
command did you run to try to start the daemon? How did you remove
'notification-daemon'? Which version of Gnome?

Nobody appears to be taking any notice of what update-rc.dD(8) says:

  A common system administration error is to delete the links with
  the thought that this will "disable" the service, i.e., that
  this will prevent the service from being started. However, if
  all links have been deleted then the next time the package is
  upgraded, the package's postinst script will run update-rc.d
  again and this will reinstall links at their factory default
  locations. The correct way to disable services is to configure
  the service as stopped in all runlevels in which it is started
  by default. In the System V init system this means renaming the
  service's symbolic links from S to K.

So

   update-rc.d apache2 disable

should be used.

For me, it is part of my 'standard' desktop install. Two reasons -
one, my learning process is information that google or some dictionary
server might like to know about and privacy is something that is
lived, a preference I have - two, I have gotten used to instantaneous
dictionary lookups, it's hard to accept anything less these days :)

Good luck

Yes. You can use that script to start (and then stop) the service on
demand.

/etc/init.d/apache2 start

That directory is where the template script resides. You can restore
the defaults later if you need to.

update-rc.d apache2 defaults

Or use some custom selection of sequence and runlevels. The defaults
are fished out of the template script and you can view them there in the
script.

> BTW, how do I know, my runlevel is 2?

runlevel is kind of an anachronism. You can find it by running
'runlevel' and you can change it by running 'telinit' It is/was used to
have different constellations of services running, effectively putting
the machine into different modes of operation.

> and what does 17 stand for?

17 is the sequence in which the script is executed. It can be anything
00 - 99. Look at the numbers of the other scripts in /etc/rc2.d/

The manual pages for update-rc.d, runlevel, and telinit cover a lot of
details and some background. The whole mess is referred to as SystemV
init scripts.

 Many dictionary databases have been packaged for use with dictd. They

 machines that will use the server.

Does this clarify things for you? I just did 'apt-cache show dictd'

I notice apach2 still in /etc/init.d/, it is good, so I can restart it

dictd is the server for the dict dictionary client. You don't NEED a
local server if you have access to another server elsewhere (you'll
notice that the dict package only suggests dictd). If you have internet
access, you can try one of the servers at

update-rc.d apache2 stop 17 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 .

Usage of ia32-libs is now discouraged, in favour of enabling the i386
architecture (dpkg --add-architecture i386; apt-get update) and
installing the native 32-bit version of your application.

If libopus0:i386 conflicts with libopus0:amd64, then I THINK that means
that that library isn't multiarch-cabable. For many libraries, it's
possible to install several architectures at the same time (into
/usr/lib/{triplet}) and the linker will use the appropriate one. Some
libraries haven't (or can't) be converted so it's currently only
possible to install one architecture's version at a time.

I don't see any bugs against libopus0, but bug #674467 is currently open
against the source package, requesting multiarch support. I would guess
that the solution is to wait until that bug is fixed.

Your default runlevel is 2, so you would look in /etc/rc2.d/ for the
script to remove, actually it is a symlink there. If you want to do it
officially, you could use 'update-rc.d'

update-rc.d -f apache2 remove

That should get it from all the rc?.d directories.

Not a direct solution to your problem, but zsh has a "prompt" command
which will allow you to install a new prompt theme with a single
command.

For day-to-day work zsh is comparable to bash (the learning curve is
much smaller than between e.g. bash and tcsh), but there's a lot of
extra power available built-in.

My mistake. It seems that the tutorial is way out of date.

$ iptables -m owner --help
...
owner match options:
[!] --uid-owner userid[-userid] Match local UID
[!] --gid-owner groupid[-groupid]   Match local GID
[!] --socket-exists Match if socket exists

So it looks like cmd-owner is no longer used. Apparmor or SELinux
mentioned by Claudius are the next things to try, though they are more
complex.

AppArmor and SELinux likely have such features, however, they may be
difficult to configure. If it is just a single program, the simplest
way is probably to run it only as a special user and then use
iptables’ --uid-owner option in the owner extension to block outgoing
traffic from this user. Remember to also block IPv6 traffic using
ip6tables if you have a working IPv6 connection.

Best,

Claudius

You could try with iptables using "-m owner --cmd-owner"

http://www.frozentux.net/iptables-tutorial/iptables-tutorial.html#TABLE.OWNERMATCH

But that will only work on a system where everyone behaves themselves.
It would be trivial to rename or make a copy of the program and run it
under a new name.

Re: Apache 2.4 and Icinga CGI scripts download instead of executing.

2013-09-09 Thread Jim Barber

Well it's always after you give up and and ask for help that you find the
answer.
A browser restart resulted in it no longer trying to download the CGI files.
Also the change I made to the icinga.conf file was wrong since having 'Request
all granted' means the 'Require valid-user' later wasn't working.
So now it just looks like:

  # apache configuration for icinga

  ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/icinga /usr/lib/cgi-bin/icinga

  # Where the stylesheets (config files) reside
  Alias /icinga/stylesheets /etc/icinga/stylesheets

  # Where the HTML pages live
  Alias /icinga /usr/share/icinga/htdocs

  Options FollowSymLinks

  DirectoryIndex index.html

  AllowOverride AuthConfig
# Order Allow,Deny
# Allow From All

  AuthName "Icinga Access"
  AuthType Basic
  AuthUserFile /etc/icinga/htpasswd.users
  Require valid-user

Apache 2.4 and Icinga CGI scripts download instead of executing.

2013-09-09 Thread Jim Barber

Hi all.

I'm hoping someone can help me out as I've been looking for a while and not
having much luck solving a problem I've encountered.

I recently upgraded Apache from 2.2 to 2.4 on a Debian system that runs Icinga
and Munin.
After doing so I had to do the following:

   - Move /etc/apache2/conf.d/* to /etc/apache2/conf-available/*.conf and use
a2enconf to enable them.
   - Re-enable a number of modules since the upgrade disables them.
   - Replace the Order/All|Deny statements with the new Require statements.

I've done this upgrades a few times now on other Debian hosts and managed to
get their web sites running okay.
After doing the above the Munin web site works okay and so does the Icinga-Web
PHP based site.
But the Icinga Classic UI that uses CGI is not working.
When I go to any page there, my web browser wants to download the cgi script
instead of the web server executing it.

As far as I can tell the configuration for Icinga looks okay.

The configuration that I have enabled is:

  root@monitor:~# ls -l /etc/apache2/conf-enabled/*
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 Sep  9 08:53 /etc/apache2/conf-enabled/charset.conf
