isdn verbindet automatisch beim Hochfahren
Probleme? Mail an [EMAIL PROTECTED] (engl)

problema Disc Dur USB
I recently loaded Debian on an IBM Thinkpad which has a cradle with a CD-rom thru (I believe) a Future-Domain 8xxx SCSI interface. Essentially new to Linux, ( an OLDd UNIX Sys V developer though) I do not know how to access my floppy, CD-rom or mount the other disk partitions the install created. Problem #1 - I cannot access the floppy on the ThinkPad Whenever I mount /dev/fd0 /floppy the floppy light comes on , but I get: end_request: I/O error, dev 03:00,sector 0 mount: /dev/fd0 in not a valid block device Can ANYONE decipher what this could mean ? is my mount syntax correct ? ( /floppy dir exists it was created by the system ) I could NOT install DEBIAN untill I set the root: linux floppy=thinkpad ^ since installing the kernel before this option it seemed to timeout. When I used this option was only when I was able to get debian installed. I presume the floppy=thinkpad is for some special issues. Were is this referenced in the debian install ? Is there a special flag that are set to mount or access the floppy ? were are they kept ? what are they ? Problem # 2 cannot mount the CD-rom when dselect asks for the block device name what should I give it ? I do not think the CD-rom is mounted. How can I ls -la the cdrom ? thanks, frank naranjo -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

re- floppy=thinkpad
Problem : The suggestion to put floppy=thinkpad into the lilo.conf did not work. I notice there is a /proc/cmdline which seems to get built each boot time. Do you know what creates this ? Thinking of placing the floppy=thinkpad line where that would be anticipating it will be used at boot time. Thanks, frank naranjo bi! floppy=thinkpad mount/umount
thank you very much Carey ! the magic word was append= in lilo.conf . I only had floppy=thinkpad . AND I also have to insert the floppy just after the systems starts to boot ! so that when it gets to the mount from /etc/fstab it also mounts the floppy correctly ! STRANGE ! If I do NOT include in /etc/fstab : /dev/fd0 /floppy msdos defaults The system will NOT mount it later ! complaining /dev/fd0 is not a block device ! To change floppies I have to : umount /dev/fd0 mount -a ( while the /dev/fd0 entry is uncommented in /etc/fstab ) However , If I use umount /dev/fd0 /floppy mount -a the system complains /dev/fd0 is not a block device ! Do YOU have any idea why the extra /floppy would cause this ? It seems the append=floppy=thinkpad in lilo.conf only takes effect on BOOT TIME ! ( When boot mounts the floppy ). If I boot WITHOUT inserting the floppy after the boot is in progress, ( and /etc/fstab file has the /dev/fd0 entry as above ) the boot process will error several times trying to mount the floppy and timeout and eventually continue with the boot. Then when I issue a mount -a it will mount the floppy but making it only READ-ONLY ! Subsequent mount -t msdos -rw /dev/fd0 /floppy complains with : block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: block device /dev/fd0 is not permitted on its filesystem only a mount -a mounts the floppy ! What makes the /dev/fd0 READ-ONLY ? Is there an entry in /etc/fstab that sets this or is it in the boot process ? RE- floppy=thinkpad mount/umount
Thank s Carey, the magic word is append=floppy=thinkpad in lilo.conf this works ONLY if I have in /etc/fstab /dev/fd0 /floppy msdos defaults If i do not insert a floppy during boot, it will error out and eventually timeout the floppy, making the device READ-ONLY on subsequent mount -a . If I insert a floppy just after the boot so that when it mounts the floppy it is there, it will mount it and make it Read/write. I can then : umount /dev/fd0 mount -a to replace floppies with RW privileges. Could you tell me why the filesystem /dev/fd0 is made READ-ONLY when it errors out on the boot process. It will allow me to use mount -a and access the floppy but only (ro). Is there an entry I can make in /etc/fstab ( or elsewhere ) so that the floppy may later be mounted as (RO) or (RW) , weather it is inserted during the boot process or NOT ? thanks, frank naranjo At 09:31 PM 10/7/97 +1300, Carey Evans wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Problem : The suggestion to put floppy=thinkpad into the lilo.conf did not work. Re: RE- floppy=thinkpad mount/umount
i have tried several versins . The only way I can get the floppy to mount/umount in rw mode is to have the entry in /etc/fstab as outlined below without noauto . and insert the floppy just after the boot starts. that way the floppy is mounted as rw . and I can umount and use mount -a to mount subsequent MSDOS floppies. THanks for your suggestions. I still cannot get to the CD and complete the install thanks, frank naranjo bi! Just change the device name in your bootloader from /dev/mdX to i.e the first detected SCSI / SATA disk /dev/sdaX. So if you screw up one of them, boot from the other device and resync your data. If you face any problem, repor it. I was just worried about VLC and ffmpeg---I recall I and others had problems mixing those two pieces of software from D-M . Oh No! Something has gone wrong
Did a full upgrade on my Sid system this morning...and now Gnome won't load. The upgrade apparently took Gnome from 2 to 3 and the infamous Gnome Shell. Well something went wrong...I have tried re-logging in again many times, as the error screen suggests..I have re-booted, renamed .gnome2 to .gnome2.bak, even moved .gconf out of the way...but nothing has worked so far. My old Gnome desktop was heavily customized, with wbar as an application launcher and a minimal gnome panel...but I don't know whether this had anything to do with the problem. My system does not support 3d acceleration...and I noticed that gnome-session says that is one of the requirements for gnome-shell. [SOLVED] Re: Sudo delays
On 23/10/11 03:11 PM, Bob Proulx wrote: Frank wrote: Recently I have noticed that calling up a terminal using Sudo from a menu..i.e. sudo /usr/bin/rxvt sometimes results in a 4 to 5 second delay before the terminal opens up. At other times it's instantaneous. It happens whether the command is run from my launcher Wbar, or the IceWm menu. Does anyone know what's going on ? It is the fqdn flag which is on by default. I always turn this off. Otherwise running sudo commands is serialized behind looking up hostnames. Looking up hostnames is an external activity and puts a dependency upon network connectivity. It can be slow. The sudoers man page (man 5 sudoers) says: fqdnSet this flag if you want to put fully qualified host names in the sudoers file. I.e., instead of myhost you would use myhost.mydomain.edu. You may still use the short form if you wish (and even mix the two). Beware that turning on fqdn requires sudo to make DNS lookups which may make sudo unusable if DNS stops working (for example if the machine is not plugged into the network). Also note that you must use the host's official name as DNS knows it. That is, you may not use a host alias (CNAME entry) due to performance issues and the fact that there is no way to get all aliases from DNS. If your machine's host name (as returned by the hostname command) is already fully qualified you shouldn't need to set fqdn. This flag is on by default. The best fix depends upon the version of sudo (version of Debian) available to you. As of Debian version 1.7.2p1-1 (available in Squeeze) the default /etc/suders file created on installation contains an #includedir directive to load files from /etc/sudoers.d/ but that is not automatically configured upon an upgrade. I recommend configurating it and then using a local unique file there. It avoids needing to modify the /etc/sudoers file and therefore allows the package to automatically upgrade that file with new defaults upon package upgrades. Furthermore, it appears that the font change done by console-setup kills my scrollback; so that Shift+PageUp and Shift+PageDown don't work. That is, I can't scroll back prior to the font change. On some hardware platforms, such as s390, when running in a virtual machine under z/VM, I can capture the console boot messages by spooling the virtual console. But on other platforms, such as i386, I do not know of a way to capture all the boot messages. Does anybody know of a way? Suspend not working
I am running Sid using IceWm, not Gnome. Today for the first time ever I tried suspending the computer from the GDM menu...but nothing happened. I have auto login enabled so a few seconds later I was logged back in. Is there some config files that have to be changed/adjusted for suspend to work. I am running the stock 686 kernel, and very average hardware on an Intel MB. My experience has always been that both cdrecord and wodim need to be suid-root. The wodim manual page supports this too. Probably you had previously made wodim suid-root, but that was lost when wodim was upgraded. Use 'dpkg-statoverride' to permanently set the suid flag for wodim. Bingo. I had forgotten about that. Strange window problem
For the past week or so I noticed an empty window which pops up seemingly at random on my screen. It looks like a terminalbut with no cursor inside. The only way it can be closed is by using xkill. I use IceWm and unless I kill it before logging out I can't log out! I'd appreciate any tips on tracking this thing down. Adaptec 2940UW Pro
I have an Adaptec 2940UW Pro installed and have installed many OS's on my system. However, the Debian tells me to take a hike when I try to install on my system. I know that there has to be support for this controller as every other port of Linux has it. I'd really like to get the Debian to work as there are a few things there that would really help me accomplish what I'm trying to do. It seems to want me in insert a disk with the drivers on it. Is there some place on your site that has these drivers to put on a diskette or an I just not using a required argument for installation. By the way, the Knoppix works fine and that is, basically, pretty much Debian. Any suggestions? Frank Anast -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? So this means not to include ide-cd module? How does one get to the second, non-burner CD ROM? I have a funny CD-ROM drive that doesn't work properly under ide-scsi emulation. So I have both ide-scsi and ide-cd modules, and set my kernel boot parameters to include hdb=ide-cd hdc=ide-scsi Which seems to work OK. I've used it with 2.4.18 and 2.4.20 kernels (my own builds). If you have a non-weird CD-ROM, you can just run both as ide-scsi. Pigeon I dont even do that. I have 'options ide-cd ignore /dev/hdd' in a file called my_crap in /etc/modutils/, and in /etc/modules I list ide-cd before ide-scsi. (and ran update-modules after the edit) Seems to work on a 2.4.5 and 2.4.19 kernel. The reason I use ide-cd for the reader is that I cant rip CD's using ide-scsi, not sure if this is normal. cheers, frank -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Install directly from SID?
