Caller ID + mgetty

1999-07-07 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi,
We are running small ISP.
Recently I tried to get Caller ID of PPP dial-up users.
As I had read from mgetty documentation the #CID=1 modem command
(with nomder of rings set = 2) switch on this mode. Howevery it does not
work for me, though this Acer modem support it. Where can I find more info
concerning this subject.

TIA,

some losses after hamm-slink

1999-05-30 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi,
after upgrading to slink am unable to work with floppy:
Operation not supported by device or something like that.

Another problem is that it seems that old way of
copying kernel (2.2.5) to another harddisk of floppy by doing
dd with previosly set root device by rdev also does not work.
Booting hangs at root device mounting point. What I am doing wrong?

lost IP aliasing

1999-05-25 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi all,
Recently I was installing slink on machine with 4 network cards.
On of them is recognized as 3c905B (100mps). As it was put to 10mps mode
at boot time I switched to kernels 2.2.5-7 and now it works fine in
100mps, but at the same time I am unable to use IP-alias which was working
without any problem under old 2.0.36 kernel.
What is going wrong?

TIA, for any tips,

Re: tulip 100mps card; need advice

1999-05-24 Thread Eugene Sevinian

George, thanks for advices,
The need for such setup was due to the estimated bandwith of overall
network transaction of about 0.5Gps. Thus, using CISCO or any other
non-PC based solution we need to establish high speed interface between
this switcher and some proxy server. The idea is that attaching network
interface directly to PC would allow us to solve this task. Is it
sounds stupid?

I have had good luck with the Intel Pro 10/100+ cards. The trouble with
going into 10MB mode might not be the network card, many hubs do not
auto-negotiate properly. Just force it in the driver at boot.
Do you mean linux network driver or card's SETUP utility?
I have noticed that hub was able to detect 100mps up to linux loading

Well, looks like money is no object here.
Hhmmm :) not quite right, unfortunatly ...

Get three of the quad adaptec
tulip cards, thats $500-$600 each and gives you 12 ethernet ports on three

Are they supported in linux kernel?

PCI slots. Make sure those boards will fit ... they are LONG. If you
really want to get fancy, you can get a dual-PCI bus machine and put your
network on one PCI bus and your disk on the other. Your bottleneck is
going to be the PCI bus, you are probably better off getting something
like a Cisco 2900 or 3000 series switch rather than trying to do this
 with a PC.

Then we should connect this switch to the server at ~500mps. Is there any
standard solution? May be fiber optic?

CPU should be SMP Alpha processors. SCSI disk. You are probably in the
$10-$15K range for a good system if I am reading this correctly.

Hi ppl, today I had a problems with DEC21143 tulip cards. The problem was
that card goes into 10mps mode just after linux loading. It seems that
there are problems with tulip drivers. Tommorow I will try to recompile
the kernel defining default media type 100baseTx. Probably this will help
somehow. HOwever I would like to know is there any any 100mps cards which

setting virtual hosts with apache

1999-04-26 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi all,
It seems that configuring virtual hosts not so easy for me :(
The one problem is that after adding virual stuff to httpd.conf
for new_host.some_domain, I got lost my old_host.some_domain. I mean that
looking from outside at both OLD and NEW addresses one can see only
new_host's pages.

These strings was added to default httpd.conf file (from hamm).

VirtualHost new_host.some_domain
ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/radiovan/
ServerName new_host.some_domain
ErrorLog /var/log/apache/new-error.log
TransferLog /var/log/apache/new-access.log
/VirtualHost

Is something wrong in this configuration?

The new_host also set in /etc/hosts as alias for original
hostname.

Another problem is thet putting two virtual host's parameters
in httpd.conf cause warning after reloading apache.
(Overlapping of two virtualhosts)

Would be thankfull for any tips,

uucp question

1999-04-07 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi ppl, Could someone explain me how should I use uucp to download
multiple files at once. This command doesn't work for me:
uucp crdlx2\!/var/spool/uucppublic/\*tmp gaguk\!~

...while these four commands do their job just fine.
uucp crdlx2\!/var/spool/uucppublic/123tmp gaguk\!~
uucp crdlx2\!/var/spool/uucppublic/124tmp gaguk\!~
uucp crdlx2\!/var/spool/uucppublic/125tmp gaguk\!~
uucp crdlx2\!/var/spool/uucppublic/126tmp gaguk\!~

Here is what I have found in uucp's info:
The shell metacharacters `?' `*' `[' and `]' are interpreted on the
appropriate system, assuming they are quoted to prevent the shell from
interpreting them first.

Do I use wrong quotation symbol before '*'?

Probably it would be possible to figure out what is going wrong from debug
info. There are some strings where Bad header is mentioned. What does it
mean?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Eugene.

However the output is :
LANG is lang1 in ././scr1
LANG is lang1 in ./scr2
LANG is lang2 in ./scr2
LANG is lang1 in ././scr1

scr2?

Yes. You need to source the script instead of executing it in a
separate shell. Then scr2 can actually be viewed as a part of scr1,
but only contained in another file. You source a script with the `.'
 command:

 . scr2

The problem with this is that nothing in scr2 is separated from scr1, so
the usefulness of having two scripts is gone. As an alternative you
could let scr2 print the new value, like

 scr2:
#!/bin/sh
export LANG=lang2
echo $LANG

 scr1:
#!/bin/sh
export LANG=lang1
echo $LANG
LANG=`scr1`
echo $LANG

But this may not be what you want. The `export' command only works
`downward': the exported variable is put in the environment of shells
and programs called from the shell where it is used.

 HTH,
 Eric

how to create locales? [OFF TOPIC]

1998-12-10 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi all,
first I tried to send this Q to debian-i18n, but it seems that list is not
active enough. May be someone here would be able to help me on this
non-debian specific subject. [BTW, solving this problel will somehow help
to promote Debian and linux in general in my country :). ]

I am planing to do some job concering localisation of linux for my native
language (Armenian). I would like to know which steps should I do for it.
One thing which I need to know is how to create locale databse. I was
unlucky to find the description of xx_YY file's format. Can someone help
me? Would be obliged for any info.

Are you using pulse dialling? Somewhere I read that there are countries (I
think Scandinavian countries were mentioned) where numbers are represented
with an amount of pulses which differ from the usual amount of pulses for a
 given number.

Check your init string, maybe it switches your modem to such a weird mode of
operation. If it's just ATZ then I would do an ATFW and see if it works.

Yes, I am using pulse dialling. It was working correct while tone
dialing from another telephone company. However, using ATFW instead
of ATZ did not fixed the problem.

Thanks to all who have helped me to understand what kind of modem is it.

Eugene, the phone number is controlled by the script in /etc/chatscripts/.
Edit the number after the ATDT.

the 'q', 'x' and other leters are appearing on the screen. At the same

Try commenting out lcp-echo-interval and lcp-echo-failure. If that helps,
puth them back in and experiment with different values for
 lcp-echo-failure.

No, this didn't help. Any other idea?

Hi again,
I was advised to check inet.conf but it seems that everything is ok with
telnet entry in that file. Here it is:

telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.telnetd

Also there is a string 127.0.0.1 localhost in /etc/hosts and ALL: ALL in
hosts.allow.

ping to localhost is working, but telnet, ftp, talk aren't.

Is there any idea?
Thanks,
   Eugene.

pap-secrets

1998-10-06 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi All,
Playing with ppp I have found that It is impossible to connect
from w95 box into linux if there exist /etc/pap/pap-secrets file.
Everything is ok when I delete this file. It looks like w95 can not use
PAP. Is it true? Or there are possible errors in /etc/ppp/options? As I
understand the main propose of pap-secrets is to restrict some users to
login via ppp. How can I impose these restrictions without secrets??

Any tips?

Below some info which might help to understand what is going on.

Is there any other ideas? Eugene.

The new ppp requires that you have a fourth field for acceptable IP
 addresses. Also,
you *must* have an entry in pap-secrets (a wildcard entry at least) even if
 you're
authenticating against your regular password database (as your options shows
 you are).
Just put in '*' as the fourth field of the appropriate entry in pap-secrets
 and you
 should be good.

distribution without burning new CD. May be using loopback device or
something like that?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

^X in pine; from w95

1998-09-20 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi All,

It seems that this is not a debian prolem, but I hope someone would
be able to help me.
There is a win95 box connected to my debian via ppp by mean of an old 1200
modem. During telnet session it is impossible to send mails in pine
pressing ^X. Instead it sends only one 'x' symbol. The same with other
CTRL+? keys. Terminal set to vt100 in telnet settings. So I can't figure
out what the matter. From ppp.log it is seen that asyncmap is 0xa
which is same when the situation is ok ( I mean connection from another
w95 machine ).

Thanks in advance for any help,

However, lilo fails still, with a message,

Changing boot device from /dev/hda1 to /dev/hda hopefully will help you.

I found this message in the lilo manual, but I cannot see how to fix it. I
ran liloconfig, which I hope was not a mistake. I toggled the flag again.
 No change to this message.

The best way I know to perform a direct copy of one disk to another is
 the following:

 cd /

Where you're copying everything from the root filesystem downwards,
including mount points (but not their contents), onto a filesystem
 mounted at /mnt.

It seems that system is working fine. Bad things occur when I copy

Thats why my main at this point concern is to perform readwrite testing

1. I can do know with hamm cd images

2. ...jumpt to slink because of apt, kde and propably more good stuff.
To go in this direction I would like to know about possible difficultis

worse to spend time on hamm in this situation.

My main tasks are: creation of nice Xdesktop, running WWW server, dialup

One thing to check is if you have a /proc directory on the new disk,

Few days ago I had a chance to compare redhat against debian.
I had installed Debian 1.3 from CD on tiny configuration:
ROM=4M, HD=120M, Monochroom Hercules, Cyrix 486DX, 50Mh.

A friend of mine tried to do the same job with RH5.1 but was unable to
install due to the lack of disk space, ROM size ...

However, the instalation of basic system of debian was done on
another PC. Might be this was a reason of such story?

Re: ppp configuring with dunc (solved)

1997-08-14 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Thanks, Richard!
Now it works. After few attempts to modify old
/root/.ppprc I have noticed that dunc replaced it
by the short file with one option (defaultroute)
and 2-3 strings as well. Then I just added this option
in old (and valid) .ppprc file. Hope this will be fixed later.

On Thu, 14 Aug 1997, Richard G. Roberto wrote:

be in the default /etc/ppp/options file, but I just noticed
that its not in the latest one.

You can grep for default in you *.ctn file(s) under
~/.dunc and see if defaultroute is getting set. If not, you
can filre up dunc and go to Modify (then select next,
OK, bla bla, select your connection) and go to Details.
This should give you a bunch of settings to choose from.
Choose defaultroute by arrowing down to it and pressing
space bar. You may also want to arrow down to proxyarp
and mark that as well, although that's only supposed to be
for the server or peer side. It won't hurt anything to
 have it on though.

If that doesn't change anything, check with the system
administrator of the peer and see if there's a problem on
the proxy arp server. By the way, I get the message about
Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP also, it
 doesn't affect my system though.

Outside of this, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas.

It was It :)

ppp configuring with dunc

1997-08-04 Thread Eugene Sevinian
Hi all,
few weeks ago I have installed Debian from self made CDs with 1.3.0a.
It seems that everything was fine! [Exepting the fact when I did not find
some nice lovely things like xman and xload]

Now I am trying to configure ppp conection to my Debian machine at work.
(I have already ppp conection from w95 working nice). At this point I use
some scripts and files prepared by 'dunc'. After running 'dialup_connect'
I am able to hear the tone from modem speaker during ~1 min but no pulse
dialing at all. Although, I put debug option in command line string but I
did not get any debug strings in /var/log.debug :(

Following information might be usefull for understanding the situation.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Eugene.

Here is what I am getting in /var/log/ppp/log:

frequently paused modem connection

1997-06-11 Thread Eugene Sevinian
I use USR14400 modem and it works fine with mgetty. The only bad thing
which I noticed so far are the short pauses (~1-5 sec) during the
sessions. Unfortunatly, to say the least of it, the quality of telephone
lines is not very good. However I would like to know if there are some
other (soft) reasons which can explain such a behavior.

Many thanks in advance for any idea.

I also was advised to use ip-masq. to solve some routing problems, but
when I tried to compile kernel (2.0.27) enabling ip-masq. I found that
this option could not be activated from 'make xconfig' menus. Why?
How should I activate this option?

Ok, here's a question. Did you recompile your kernel or anything?
If you did recompile, did you enable IP forwarding?

You are RIGHT! It was disabled. The reason is - a lack of knowledge :-(
Now I will recompile it and hope it will work.

 I ask because
it looks like the problem is that packets aren't getting past your
linux box. Since you can ping the linux side, the link is just
fine. If you have the same kernel which came with the dist. then
I *think* it has IP forwarding enabled (I'm not sure about this,
since I didn't compile that kernel myself). You may be able to
discover if it's enabled by looking at some /proc/?? file, but I'm
not too sure. Anyone else have a thought?

1997-05-19 Thread Eugene Sevinian

After few attempts to compile the new binary of mgetty with ppp support
I was adviced to go back to the initial point and try again with old
binary. It became clear ( to Jens B. Jorgensen [EMAIL PROTECTED],
not to me :-) that there were a propblem with IP address. When the last
item if IP was set to two digit instead of default 3 digit form than
things had changed.

Presen state is following:
Dailing from the w95 box side I see

Connected at 14400 bps
Duration: 000:06:15

Details:
Server type: PPP: Windows95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
Protocols:
1) TCP/IP

However, when I try to run netscape ( the same with other staff)
netscape stops with following message on status line:

   Connect: Looking up host: home.netscape.com...

And after a bit thinking it returns:

Netscape is unable to locate the server:
home.netscape.com
The server does not have a DNS entry.

Ckeck the sever name in the Location(URL)
   and try again.
---

Hope someone can help me to find the way out.

Thanks,

Eugene Sevinian

You might need also to specify the address of nameserver(s) from win95
box side and make sure you give proxyarp option to pppd.

I tried to add proxyarp to the coomand strings but things didn't
changed. Now it looks this way in /etc/mgetty/login.config:

/AutoPPP/ - - /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap -pap login
:194.67.208.10 debug dns-addr 194.67.64.1 proxyarp

Ckeck the sever name in the Location(URL)
 and try again.

mgetty for PPP; Need help

1997-05-15 Thread Eugene Sevinian
I have installed mgetty ( 1.0.0-1 ) and it works fine when I am dial-in
from outside w95 machine. Now I tring to add PPP and here are
the basic steps which were done:

1. Installing new kernel (2.0.27) with CONFIG_PPP=m
2. Then I edited Makefile in this way
CFLAGS=-O2 -Wall -pipe -DAUTO_PPP
and slightly modified the policy.h
3. Make; cp mgetty /sbin; rebot

After this point I get the message
...S1, too fast respawning mgetty. Suspended for 5 min or something
like that. And that is all )-;

Hope that someone can help me to overcome this.

Thanks in advane,

Re: mgetty for PPP; Need help

Thanks Jens,
here is some additional info.

You didn't use 'make config' or 'make xconfig'? When you recompiled
the kernel did you make modules and modules-install? You know, the
PPP module depends on others (can't think of them offhand).

I did it.

  2. Then I edited Makefile in this way
  CFLAGS=-O2 -Wall -pipe -DAUTO_PPP
  and slightly modified the policy.h

Did you need to compile from source? The stock binary includes
 AUTO_PPP support.

First I had problems with this binary. Trying to connect from w95
I got ...
The computer you're dialing in to cannot establish a Dial_Up
Networking connection. Check your password, and try again.
... so I decided to compile from source.

  3. Make; cp mgetty /sbin; rebot

If mgetty is respawning, something larger than ppp is probably wrong--
it would never have a chance to take a login? Perhaps something you
did to the config is causing this. Did you change the config file?
Did you look in /var/log/mgetty/* for error messages?

Here is the messages coresponding to the new compiled binary lifetime
from /var/log/mgetty/mg_ttyS1.log.

I'll try. I use mgetty/ppp all the time. Never compiled mgetty
 myself.

Re: mgetty for PPP; Need help

1997-05-15 Thread Eugene Sevinian

Mgetty string in inittab look like
s1:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -D ttyS1
Is it enough or I should set this -D somewhere else ?

I've seen this with mgetty trying to initialize a modem that was
not a fax. Add '-D' to the mgetty line in inittab, or (I think)
 'data-only' in the mgetty.config file
