Just in case anyone else hits this problem, I found the cause.
My ~/.local/share/applications/ directory had a compiz.desktop file in
it.
Don't know what wrote the file or tried to figure out exactly what in
the file caused my Visual Effects settings to get messed up on login,

I can also confirm this issue and confirm that disabling compiz fixes
it. I'm going to attempt to investigate if any particular compiz
settings affect it, or if it is just the compiz window manager.

Well, that script does work for me. I must have tested it without
specifying options.
What started this for me is the CD ripping software abcde does not work
because the while loop that calls getopts does not process the options.
Does this do the normalization for you?
