[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-24 Thread SY
The launchpad-style breadcrumbs are certainly an improvement, but I
personally feel that the more textual style for breadcrumbs (element
element element) would be better. Not only does KDE use this style,
but so does Windows Vista, and the majority of web sites that include
breadcrumb navigation. This style would be more familiar to users. In
any case, the current breadcrumb style is very undesirable, and should
be fixed as some point in the future.

The home button is also redundant, and arguably a waste of space, as
there is a link to Home both in the Places left sidebar and in the Go
menu. Also, a reload/stop button is pretty much a necessity to work with
storage with slow data rates and high latencies (network disks, etc.).

Although I do not necessarily agree with the existence of a global
setting for showing text with toolbar items, ignoring this global
setting in a program that forms such a central and high-profile part of
Gnome, such as Nautilus, would be dangerous and confusing to users.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-24 Thread J
I vote for turned OFF by default.

I always use F2, even when I used windows. The double-click thing is
extremely buggy in windows.

When you want to open a file you get stuck in rename mode and have to press esc
or somewhere else to disable it.
When you want to rename it, it opens up.
When you want to delete it, you get stuck in rename mode and when you press
delete the text is gone. Then you try to click somewhere else and because the
field is empty you'll get a warning which you have to cancel. You then have to
press esc to get the text back. Talk about disrupting the work-flow.

[Bug 391854] [NEW] Preferred Applications should update /etc/alternatives

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Using Ubuntu Jaunty, specifying a referred web browser via the GNOME
Preferred Applications control applet doesn't update the
/etc/alternatives/x-www-browser symlink. As a result certain operations
within the GUI result in the incorrect browser being used.

If Preferred Applications is the visible and and most accessible
mechanism for setting browser references on Ubuntu desktops, then it
would be logical to integrate it with the Debian /etc/alternatives
mechanism.

[Bug 93291] Re: gnome-session last only 10 second dialog

2009-06-24 Thread aslam
This started happening after I upgraded* from 8.10 (Intrepid) to 9.04
(Jaunty), last week.

Following reboot, the first login attempt to my usual user account
fails, bringing me back to the login screen. The next login attempt to
results in the dialog saying Your last session lasted 10 seconds...
and the gnome session doesn't go any further. The only option at this
point is to click OK in the dialog (or close the dialog), which sends me
back to the login screen. The ~/.xsession-errors displayed in the dialog
is attached.

My ~/.xsession is as follows (The behavior was the same with the default
Xsession start script):
code
#!/bin/bash

exec gnome-session

### The following is a workaround for the issue with the GConf daemon not
getting started...
/usr/bin/gnome-settings-daemon
/code

I am able to start a failsafe terminal session, and the gnome session launches
when I do...
code
$ valgrind gnome-session
/code

I will attach the stderr stdout (combined) below...

* The Ubuntu Intrepid - Jaunty upgrade was in the absence of a network
connection -- I suddenly lost wired and wireless networking in Intrepid, and
gambled that the upgrade would fix it; alas, no such luck.

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-24 Thread Phantom
I'm against decreasing the size of buttons!

If you're using mouse - it's fine. But not, when you're using a
touchscreen! I'm currently on a 12,1 tablet (HP tx2500) and these
buttons are usable, because my fingers easily fit on them. MS Windows
are unusable because of the small elements.

Same on big resolution screens. On 37 LCD with a 1920x1080 resolution
small buttons just don't work well. Especially when using non-precise
device like Wiimote.

Sorry for my english, but i don't want to see a disaster. This case
needs a lot of thought. We need a compromise what's the best when
choosing between size, resolution and used input device.

[Bug 391861] [NEW] gstreamer/alsa high cpu usage (wrong sample rate)

2009-06-24 Thread ikus060
Public bug reported:

When playing music using gstreamer alsa, the cpu usage is higher then
expected compare to other configuration.

Step to reproduce :
gst-launch filesrc location='any.mp3' ! mad ! audioconvert ! alsasink

With great help of gstreamer and alsa developers we manage to identify
the problem come from the dmix'ed default device in alsa. To completely
fix the problem, I add the following line in /etc/asound.conf

defaults.pcm.dmix.rate 44100

[Bug 386150] Re: Nautilus file browser toolbar is complicated, redundant, and ugly

2009-06-24 Thread SY
This is the only downside I can think of to this style of breadcrumbs
versus the current style. That being said, as long as a hover state is
provided for the breadcrumb elements, I think it would be fairly
apparent that the elements are clickable. Overall, I think it would be a
win for usability to use a more common and logical style.

[Bug 73744] Re: rhythmbox is slow!

2009-06-24 Thread ikus060
I've do some research today about this problem as I find it really
annoying.

On my side the problem wasn't solved in Jaunty. Rythmbox or Tomet was
using 17% of the CPU. My research lead my to alsa. It's seams to be an
issue of the sample rate withing the dmix of default alsa device use by
gstreamer. The solution was to put the following line in
/etc/asound.conf

defaults.pcm.dmix.rate 44100

As I'm not sure it's the same bug/problem I create a new bug report here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gst-plugins-base0.10/+bug/391861

[Bug 391873] [NEW] crashes on attempt to make automatic playlist

2009-06-24 Thread Michael Norrish
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Reproduce by
1. starting rhythmbox
2. bring up automatic playlist dialog
3. select play count as thing to constrain
(dialog changes to equals 0 in two adjustable fields to the right)
4. press new button to confirm this is what you want
5. program crashes - message on command line is

Rhythmbox:ERROR:rb-auto-playlist-
source.c:745:rb_auto_playlist_source_do_query: assertion failed:
(priv-cached_all_query)

It's possible this was fixed by the same fix that fixed bug 371067, but
I don't know how I can upgrade my version of rbox to check.

[Bug 36094] Re: right click should open a context menu

2009-06-24 Thread Dennis Craven
When I click on a link in yelp 2.27.1 I get the option to Open Link,
Open Link in New Window or Copy Link Address.

When I click on anything else, I see nothing, which I don't think is a
bug.

Is that satisfactory to the submitter? There is little detail in the
original post as to expected behaviour, and I don't recall if this
behaviour existed in Dapper. Thanks for the bug!

[Bug 389930] Re: grub menu skipped after shutdown

2009-06-24 Thread Scott Howard
Thanks again.

Let's check the bot logs and see if any messages are coming up. To enable boot
logging, follow the instructions at the first post here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49925

Then attach one log after you shutdown with 'shutdown -h now' and one
log with 'shutdown -r now'

Comparing these two might give us a view as to what's stopping grub.

tooltip does not change, and gnome-power is not inhibited (the screen will
still blank/suspend as per power profile).
+
+ Expected result:
+ clicking on the applet changes the tool tip and icon to display automatic
sleep disabled (or something similar), and the applet should prevent the
screen from blanking or suspending.

[Bug 93607] Re: Broken URLs in Yelp viewer

2009-06-24 Thread Dennis Craven
So I don't see Desktop Effect in yelp anymore. As of Karmic I see that
it mush be replaced with Visual Effects. This link works fine for me.

Is this bug still happening in Jaunty for anyone? I'm using yelp 2.27.1.
If not, it should be closed. Thanks.

[Bug 197657] Re: sunset in clock applet does not respect 12hr/24hr setting

2009-06-24 Thread Ted M Lin
Here's a sample patch (against Karmic's gnome-panel 2.26.2-1ubuntu1) to
have the sunrise/sunset time use the clock preference (12h vs 24h). It
should apply cleanly to the current version in Intrepid (untested).

[Bug 28835] Re: Unmount in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-24 Thread LKRaider
Please unmount storage before unplugging device, you may damage your
data otherwise!

*may* ? why leave the user in doubt about the state of the drive? Can't
the system detect if there was a problem on removal instead of alarming
the user every time? Even better, is there a technical reason why a
direct removal while data was not synced can't be executed if the user
re-plugs the device, so the system can fix it? Something along the lines
of:

You removed the drive while data was being written, please re-attach
the drive to continue the operation (or click cancel to ignore)

[Bug 356702] Re: Jaunty: window switcher tooltips stick when they shouldn't

2009-06-24 Thread Travis Watkins
Sorry, the patch I submitted was for scrolling on the workspace
switcher, not dragging. Either way, the upstream bug makes it clear that
is a problem with libwnck.

Back on topic, this particular bug is trickier. The upstream bug was
marked as a duplicate of the bug about dragging not working so I'm not
sure if they understood what the problem was. Seeing how libwnck-based
things are the only ones that seem to have this problem (window list
does it too) I'm thinking it's a libwnck problem and not a compiz
problem. If a libwnck developer can point to what compiz is doing wrong
that makes this happen I'd be glad to see what I can do to fix it
though.

[Bug 391925] [NEW] Sessions dialog can have multiple instances

2009-06-24 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

- how to produce -
To manage the (startup) sessions from the GUI, the user can startup the session
manager using the following steps: system preferences sessions. Open 2 or
more dialogs this way.

- problem -
In this dialog the user can choose which services to start (and which not). The
problem occurs when there are multiple instances open from this dialog and when
the settings in these dialogs are different (changed by the user). The user
does not know which settings will be stored, because there are multiple dialogs
with different settings.

- suggestion -
make this dialog window a single instance version and refocus this window if
the user tries to open another window.

Let me know if you need more info.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-24 Thread mac_v
As nitindb says, i realize that *MAYBE* its the desktop users who report
as NOT having this problem, I find the behavior very irritating in my
laptop while using Windows , when rename is triggered by accidental
taps.

But if a very Intuitive method as Cody has described can be implemented
, it would be welcome , along with an option to turn it off...

[Bug 121090] Re: Evolution fails to download some gmail emails

2009-06-24 Thread _sebastian_
Hi there,
having or had the same problem.
I've backed up all my evolution under Intrepid and once I imported it back in
Jaunty I had this stange problem of not receiving all mail!.

I checked my mailbox sizes but all are below 1 Gig so there should be no size
restrictions.
It was quite strange as many mails with large attachment did get though but
little ones not.

After reading the comments I checked my Junk folder and disables the
BOGOFILTER Junk plugin. What the heck happened to you plugin? Why do I
have to sort them all now?

Well now I will go through the mails and see I've Evolution downloaded
all or only some. After all this was not a really evolutionary
development from Intrepid to Jaunty :-)

[Bug 350850] Re: Glchess (gnome-games) crashes on 3D mode

2009-06-24 Thread Richard Cavell
Josmar gave me a fix: Install mgltools-opengltk

Type this in the console:
$ sudo apt-get install mgltools-opengltk

It's still a bug though, because the code shouldn't crash. It should
exit gracefully or allow the package to be downloaded.

[Bug 389140] Re: Removing a picture of a contact in an LDAP adressbook crashes evolution

Ok, I hope I've installed the right debug symbols:

# apt-get install evolution-data-server-dbgsym=2.26.1-0ubuntu2
# apt-get install evolution-dbgsym=2.26.1-0ubuntu2

After that I started evolution in gdb and reproduced the error. While the error
dialog was displayed
I pressed ctrl-c in gdb and ran the commands described in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace.

Re: [Bug 23293] Re: Nautilus windows should close on unmount

2009-06-24 Thread Yann Lossouarn
Hello,

Except maybe in contexts where you have a lot of windows, and you have
to search among your taskbar to ensure none of your windows is the one
corresponding to the volume you just unmounted...

Martin Lettner a écrit :
confirming this. would be just nice if nautilus would close the tab (or
window if there is only that one tab) when the media is unmountet. also
the user would have a definite feedback that the media was safely
 removed from the system!

just think about a very common scenario:
 - plug in a usb memory drive
 - do stuff with it
 - click remove/unmount somewhere
 - after some seconds the file manager window disappears so also the memory
 drive can be removed
 very intuitive i think...

 was this reported upstream already?

[Bug 263262] Re: Rhythmbox doesn't properly pick up track numbers on wma files

2009-06-24 Thread John Ward
I would like to point out that I have Ubuntu installed on several
different machines (it's a good OS, can't blame me), laptops, PC's etc.
and I have wma files from several different sources (not just my ones
from years ago) and the same thing happens on all of them - incorrect
reading of track numbers. This is not specific to my library (which I
thought may have been the case as I used mostly WMP to rip them years
ago and that could have been my single point of failure). There's some
problem somewhere in reading and understanding
