When I installed Ubuntu 8.04 I had to install the java plugins and my wireless
didn't work right away. Also I had numerous sound card issues. I got it all
working after a few days of hitting google and IRC but I had to go through that

In Windows when i right-click on an item within the red box i clumsily
drew on the 2nd attachment i get the full menu i would expect to find
within a normal file-browser window - including the options to open one
of those files or to create a new

Ok, now i've read your report it's a bigger network than i first assumed
- sorry about that. Also the problem has been going on longer than i
assumed and various people haven't been able to find the pattern or
cause.
Firefox is where i first noticed it but it seems to be prevalent -

happened with one package and not another then i would have noticed it

Hmmm, can you try another cd/dvd drive?
I searched in the Synaptic Package manager for Nokia and found a number
of native linux apps that work for a whole range of different handsets
so that you wouldn't have to struggle with exporting/importing data as
you change handsets over the years.
I have 2 dvd drives, the one that's slightly older also happens to be a
slightly less reliable brand but was a lot cheaper when i bought it.
Its great mostly but occasionally has a bit of trouble.
I find that whichever drive has trouble reading something usually the
other one can cope with it. i
ok. 2 different ways immediately spring to mind.
1st way.
Open a terminal window
Apps - Accessories - Terminal (as you know)
type in su
for super-user - this gives you 'root privileges'
enter the root password,
if you can't remember this use the

Err, it worked for me. Ubuntu 8.10 Totem 2.24.3 probably not the same
hardware. It hadn't occured to me to try navigating with the keyboard
as the mouse works fine. I wonder if the laptops mousepad works, they
usually have one and the YouTube movie carefully avoided using it.

Errr, that cleared up when i used 'Ctrl -' a few times.
I looked up the dpkg help by typing dpkg --help and still don't kow what it
did, lol, but at least its updating happily so i'm not worried. The last line

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. I haven't got a clue how to help and
haven't tried this sort of thing myself. I'd try hunting around in
Synaptics Package Manager for a better tool for doing this. Have you
tried hunting upstream at Bugzilla? Google searches are sometimes good

Under the View menu there's no option allowing a terminal 'window' or
rather a terminal pane to open between the Status Bar and the icon view.
I've shown a mock-up attached.
I'm mostly using Ubuntu 8.10 with Nautilus 2.24.1

The Help menu - About (at the bottom) gives a lot of useful numbers but
doesn't actually say what the program does or what it is for. I look in
the package manager to find their brief description sometimes if i
really am

Wow, it DOES work perfectly. Just OpenOffice and Firefox don't and they
don't need to either, they're pretty clear.

Errr this a 'waggle the wires - check the plug is on' type of answer, so
i apologise for it in advance but i noticed that the language is set to
en-US. Has language support for Chinese also been enabled? Check from
the 'System' menu - Administration - Language Support. You probably set

8.10 seems a lot more flaky about this sort of thing than 8.04. I've
been tempted to go back to 8.04 a few times now. Mostly tho its just
some eye-candy type stuff that seems worse on 8.10 but it's enough that
when i get friends to try Ubuntu i give them an 8.04 disk rather than
the 8.10.

deleted stuff properly out of the Waste Bin ;)
