I updated from a very stable 12.04(LTS) to a unreliable 12.10. Cannot
get nvidia driver to load even when following following instrucions:
Before switching to the nvidia drivers you need to install linux-source
and linux-headers. After the source is installed, try switching
I did an update to Kernel 3.8.4-030804-generic.
I get the error message only once and then everthing works fine for me.

When this occurs I'm also unable to use the ctrl-alt-F1 shortcut to
switch out of the X server and into a console. This is happening on two
of my machines. One a lenovo thinkpad with an Intel video chip, the
other is a desktop with an nVidia chip.
