[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1919377] Re: gnome-shell 3.38+ HUD app grid is limited to only 4x6

2021-03-16 Thread Chris Cheney
Going back to low resolution 1080p 100dpi, it actually looks decent
there, notice the spacing actually looks sane and there aren't huge
areas of wasted space like at 4K.

So it looks like they only really considered 1080p 100dpi and just
blissfully ignored all other use cases.

Bug description:
For some reason after Ubuntu 20.04 (Gnome 3.36) the app grid was
limited to a maximum of 4x6.

This might be acceptable on an iPhone, which is where they actually
got the limit from, but it is not at all acceptable for an actual
large computer screen. It looks farcical.

Even the spacing prior to Ubuntu 20.10 (Gnome 3.38) was much too wide,
but this is MUCH MUCH WORSE.

It looks like previously it was limited to only ~ 6x12 which was still
  pretty bad.

See the attached screenshot of what this looks like on Gnome 3.36 vs
  3.38.

Also notice there is more than one page of apps on 3.38 and that it
only shows 4x6 at maximum. 臘

As you will notice this is a 4K screen at 100 dpi, its not a small
screen, but is being treated like its a phone.

I'm using my monitor in portrait mode, but it still looks silly even in

2019-03-30 Thread Chris Cheney
As neither Chrome/Chromium or Firefox has any real interest in Linux
support can we get Ubuntu to apply the patch? The patch has existed for
5 years already.

Even a partial solution where its built in but you still have to enable
it in config would be fine. Having to hunt down a ppa to get working
video in 2019 on Linux is absurd.

Otherwise users would be much better off moving to another distro that
supports it such as Arch, Fedora, etc as noted above.

2016-08-16 Thread Chris Cheney
It was after I entered the username and password. If you look closely
at the picture you can see where it shows my login but won't let me
click through since the window is too small.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 971018] Re: Auto-hide Unity Launcher will not reveal when mouse pushed to left side in VirtualBox or VMware

2016-08-11 Thread Chris Cheney
This is still happening on 16.10 as expected due to the previous setting
of 'Opinion' the only way to work around this issue on VMWare
Workstation is to change the setting under Edit->Preferences->Input
Optimize mouse for games: Always. Disabling "Automatically grab and
ungrab the mouse cursor." does not fix the issue.

There probably should be an option for auto-hide to unhide on being near
the edge, it could be settable just in unity-tweak-tool...

After rereading the original bug description my issue is slightly
different. I could not see my keyboard or mouse until I applied the
patch in #8. The patch only made the keyboard show up for me though.

fairly reliably until I decided to finally upgrade my bios to fix some
other issues (big mistake, since I late found out its nearly
impossible to downgrade). Since I upgraded the monitor nearly never
works, I did get it to show display a few times but I'm not sure how
that happened. At the moment while researching information to add to
this post it actually started working for the moment. When I run
xrandr it causes the screens to blink rapidly for around 30sec-1min.
Most of the time the system is unresponsive while the monitor is
plugged in. It appears to occasionally cause the entire desktop to
stop responding until the mate-session is killed.

In dmesg I see instances of:

switching from hotplug detection to polling
[ 240.125029] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1:

Also fwiw I get different errors, and a kernel backtrace, but still no

I forgot to mention in #2 that the reason I tested and uploaded a new
dmesg was due to multiple entries in the 3.13.0-35.62 Ubuntu changelog
relating to i915 dp support. The changes didn't appear to fix my issue
though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1360545] Re: [trusty] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

2014-09-04 Thread Chris Cheney
So I dug around in fdo intel BZ area and found that adding the following
to the kernel may produce better logs:

drm.debug=0xe log_buf_len=4M

I have attached the resulting log. It looks a lot like the other bugs
for ThinkPad that have been around for a long time now.

Title:
[trusty] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1:
switching from hotplug detection to polling

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I have a haswell motherboard with 3 1080p monitors connected, 2
directly via HDMI and a 3rd HDMI connected to an active displayport
dongle. The monitor on the displayport connection had been working
fairly reliably until I decided to finally upgrade my bios to fix some
other issues (big mistake, since I late found out its nearly
impossible to downgrade).

[ 10.053292] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1:
switching from hotplug detection to polling
[ 240.125029] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1:
switching from hotplug detection to polling

Also fwiw I get different errors, and a kernel backtrace, but still no
display on current drm-intel-nightly from here:

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/

And of course it all still works fine under Windows 8.1.

Searching google I see other instances of people with the same problem
on the i915 driver on other systems like ThinkPad, etc.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1360732] [NEW] [utopic] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1: switching from hotplug detection to polling

2014-08-23 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

This is essentially the same issue as bug #1360545 but on utopic. On
utopic there are also some kernel backtraces as shown below. The system
was completely unresponsive and I had to actually unplug the displayport
dongle to be able to file this bug report.

In addition to the interrupt storm message I got on trusty I also saw:

[3.713503] [drm:ivybridge_set_fifo_underrun_reporting] *ERROR* uncleared
fifo underrun on pipe C
[3.713536] [drm:ivb_err_int_handler] *ERROR* Pipe C FIFO underrun

The numerous backtraces looked similar to this each time, they appear to
be happening about 3 times per second until I unplugged the dongle.

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I have a haswell motherboard with 3 1080p monitors connected, 2
directly via HDMI and a 3rd HDMI connected to an active displayport

In dmesg I see instances of:

[ 240.125029] [drm] HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-1:

Also fwiw I get different errors, and a kernel backtrace, but still no
display on current drm-intel-nightly from here:

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-nightly/

And of course it all still works fine under Windows 8.1.

Searching google I see other instances of people with the same problem
on the i915 driver on other systems like ThinkPad, etc.

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This is essentially the same issue as bug #1360545 but on utopic. On
utopic there are also some kernel backtraces as shown below. The
system was completely unresponsive and I had to actually unplug the
displayport dongle to be able to file this bug report.

In addition to the interrupt storm message I got on trusty I also saw:

  [3.713503] [drm:ivybridge_set_fifo_underrun_reporting] *ERROR* uncleared
fifo underrun on pipe C
  [3.713536] [drm:ivb_err_int_handler] *ERROR* Pipe C FIFO underrun

The numerous backtraces looked similar to this each time, they appear
to be happening about 3 times per second until I unplugged the dongle.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1313436] [NEW] Unity/Compiz very slow after resume from suspend

2014-04-27 Thread Chris Cheney
Public bug reported:

After suspending and then resuming the system unity/compiz often but not
always becomes extremely slow to respond, so much so that you can see
the transistion from lockscreen to desktop for many minutes (if it ever
finishes). I will attach a picture of what it looks like. I didn't wait
around long enough to see if it would ever actually finish showing the
desktop.

Is there any way to work around this issue? setsid unity has been
mentioned online as a workaround for unity/compiz problems but that does
not appear to work when run from the linux command line outside of X.

The system has never been able to run the nouveau driver due to it
crashing on resume under any desktop environment, which is the primary
reason its running the nvidia driver.

Title:
Unity/Compiz very slow after resume from suspend

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After suspending and then resuming the system unity/compiz often but
not always becomes extremely slow to respond, so much so that you can
see the transistion from lockscreen to desktop for many minutes (if it
ever finishes). I will attach a picture of what it looks like. I
didn't wait around long enough to see if it would ever actually finish
  showing the desktop.

Is there any way to work around this issue? setsid unity has been
mentioned online as a workaround for unity/compiz problems but that
does not appear to work when run from the linux command line outside
  of X.

The system has never been able to run the nouveau driver due to it
crashing on resume under any desktop environment, which is the primary
reason its running the nvidia driver.

Sorry I was out of town for a conference so was unable to respond
quickly.

I just reproduced this bug again with final 14.04, and on top of that it
appears to have passed my password through to the application with focus
behind the screensaver which happened to be IRC (ugh).

It appears that this issued was fixed with the recent upload of
libreoffice 1:4.2.3~rc2-0ubuntu1. Upstream appears to have backported
the fix since I checked the 4.2.3 build on March 24.

dates on the axis correctly but the tool tip is offset by 4 days as in
the existing spreadsheet example above.

Bug description:
On trusty (14.04) using libreoffice calc charts the following happens:

If I open an existing spreadsheet created prior to trusty (14.04) with
the days of Jan 2014 (1-31) in column A, and numbers in column B which
are in a 'Line' chart it will show the data itself correctly but the
axis and tool tip are offset by 4 days, ie it will claim it is for Jan
5, when the data itself is for Jan 1. This appears to happen even
without having changed the chart. I can delete and recreate the chart

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1296535] Re: libreoffice calc chart data point/axis offset wrong

2014-03-24 Thread Chris Cheney
I tested for the problem on various versions of upstream LibreOffice on
Windows, which seems to be easiest way to test random releases.

This problem does not exist in upstream 4.1.5.3 on Windows. - (latest
4.1 series)

This problem exists in upstream 4.2.1.1 on Windows.
This problem exists in upstream 4.2.2.1 on Windows.
This problem exists in upstream 4.2.3.1 on Windows.

This problem does not exist in upstream 4.2.4 nightly (Mar 23) on
Windows.

http://dev-
builds.libreoffice.org/daily/libreoffice-4-2/Win-x86@42/current/libo-42~2014-03-23_18.49.53_LibreOfficeDev_4.2.4.0.0_Win_x86.msi

If 4.2.4 isn't planned to be uploaded for trusty once its released,
backporting the fix would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Chris

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1027202] Re: Does not connect (to wired network) after suspend

2013-10-21 Thread Chris Cheney
This happens to me on saucy on two computers fairly often and a third
seldomly.

The first system with the problem has a:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8056 PCI-E
Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 14)

The other system has:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411
PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411
PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

The system that mostly works has:

00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection I217-V (rev
04)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation I210 Gigabit Network Connection
(rev 03)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-19 Thread Chris Cheney
I see lots of kworker cpu usage on 3.9rc7 today but my mouse isn't
slowing down. I can't run perf top to see why on that version due to the
following:

# perf top
perf_3.9.0-030900rc7 not found
You may need to install linux-tools-3.9.0-030900rc7

Which does not appear to be available.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
This doesn't appear to actually be fixed and the workaround of running
the below command no longer works on Ubuntu 13.04 with linux 3.8.0-18.
Is there a way to get the fix from 3.9 into 13.04? My system is so
unresponsive at times, and it happens fairly often, that I can't do
anything with the mouse.

echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
Brad Figg is having me test out linux 3.8.0-19.29 to see if that
resolves the problem. I'll report back here after I have tested it for a
bit.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 957298] Re: Mouse is very slow after starting a session on Precise

2013-04-18 Thread Chris Cheney
So far it appears to be working with the 3.9rc7 mainline kernel without
needing the workaround, or at least is taking much longer to trigger the
issue. Howevre that kernel is not slated to go into 13.04 so this bug or
one of its duplicates probably should be open still instead of 'Fix
Released'. I am willing to test out any kernels to help get this issue
fixed in 13.04.

I made a fresh install of Precise on a Lenovo X200 a couple weeks ago.
When I start a new session after booting, the mouse is very slow and
