RE: Possible missing mentor(s)

2019-09-04 Thread Alex Bozarth
Sorry for my delayed weigh-in as a committer, I was on (a rare) vacation.
As for the discussion, I agree with Marco's points. As far as I go, the
PR's I've been pinged on are either WIP or changes were requested and then
left hanging. Also as many have said, if I'm not pinged I don't usually
check on open PRs since I haven't have bandwidth for Livy development
recently. For PRs I do believe things could be better, but I also believe
that Livy's handling of open PRs is approximately the same as other
projects like Spark (not to say that's necessarily a positive). It also may
be time to start pruning hanging PRs: pinging creators on PRs left with
unaddressed change requests and closing them if there's no response in a
set time, closing PRs that have been discussed and seemingly rejected,
requesting reviewers for PRs that are active but without reviews. This is
something Spark does regularly but after 2 years we've yet to do. We could
also offer the dev list an opportunity to resurrect PRs abandoned by their
original dev before closing them if another dev wants to continue work on
it.

Sid, answering to the PRs you pointed out, I think open meisam's PRs are:
 - 1 WIP;
 - 1 changes were requested and he has not done them;
 - 1 I commented on it and it was stated that the feature could have been
merged if the PR is brought up to date, which hasn't so far by the
contributor.

Moreover, I have never seen on the PRs committers getting pinged. IMHO,
those PRs are stuck due to the inactivity of the contributor.
Surely we have to do more in order to be able to review more PRs, but, as
Saisai said, we are stil a small community with few active committers, so
we try and do our best.
More importantly, I think there is really no evidence at all of the alleged
bias.

In general, I think we all know that you need to be very active in the
community to avoid PRs getting stale. This is true also for bigger
communities like Spark.
So what I'd encourage is also more proactivity by the contributors. I think
the message should not be: "I open a PR and committer must immediately
merge it"; but "I open a PR, I ask for committers' help on reviews and try
and push in order to have it in if the PR is important".

Thanks,
Marco

I agree with all of Marcelo's points. The last time we discussed this was
when Spark 2.2 was new and it was decided that it was probably too soon,
but that was awhile ago now. I've been in support of deprecating and
removing support for older versions of Java/Scala/Spark for a while and I
believe it will allow us to clean up and unify large portions of our code.

Subject:[DISCUSS] Getting rid of old stuff

Hey all,

I'd like to gauge people's reaction to some proposals regarding what
is supported in Livy.

#1: Java versions

I propose dropping support for Java 7. Even J8 is already EOL,
although it's pretty obvious nobody is getting rid of it anytime soon.
But I don't see a good reason to support J7. Even testing it is a
nuisance, since most people only have jdk8 around...

#2: Spark versions

I think we should drop 1.6. At least. This would clean up some code
that currently uses reflection, and fix some parts of the API (like
the JobContext method to retrieve a "SparkSession" instance).

Changing the API is well, not backwards compatible, but I think it's
better to do that sort of cleanup earlier than later when the project
is more mature.

Separately, we could consider dropping 2.0 and 2.1 also. There was
talk in the Spark list about making 2.1 EOL - I don't remember a final
verdict, but I don't imagine there will be a lot of new deployments of
2.1 going forward, since the only reason to use it is if you're stuck
with J7.

#3: Scala versions

If we decide to only support Spark 2.2+, then the decision is easy.
But if we drop 1.6, we should consider dropping Scala 2.10 support.
Spark does not ship official builds with 2.10 support in the 2.x line,
and it was dropped altogether in 2.2.

We shouldn't remove support for multiple versions of Scala, though,
since 2.12 will be beta in Spark 2.4, and there will be a 2.13 at some
point.

Thoughts?

As I mentioned earlier this month I will take care of this, but I plan to
wait until the results of the PMC vote on 0.5 so as to include that in our

Subject:Podling Report Reminder - February 2018

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache
Incubator PMC. It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to
prepare your quarterly board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 21 February 2018, 10:30 am PDT.
The report for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC
report. The Incubator PMC requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks
before the board meeting, to allow sufficient time for review and
submission (Wed, February 07).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the Incubator
PMC, and subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the
very latest you should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board
meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report

--

Your report should contain the following:

*   Your project name
* A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of
the project or necessarily of its field
* A list of the three most important issues to address in the move
towards graduation.
* Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be
aware of
* How has the community developed since the last report
* How has the project developed since the last report.
* How does the podling rate their own maturity.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__wiki.apache.org_incubator_February2018=DwICAg=jf_iaSHvJObTbx-siA1ZOg=S1_S7Dymu4ZL6g7L21O78VQZ53vEnAyZ-cx37DPYDyo=YmrTieC32JU6kAWV9zcZcEDMweskGvYUeHEH945J-gg=QL2AZY2YrPNqDFF9S-MHVuyUYSBD48iCNMofSmAUhHw=

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before
this page is created from a template.

Mentors
---

Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on
the Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are
following the project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms
for the Incubator PMC.

[VOTE] Release Apache Livy 0.5.0-incubating (RC2)

2018-01-29 Thread Alex Bozarth

The Apache Livy community has voted on and approved a proposal to release
Apache Livy 0.5.0-incubating (RC2). We would like to request that the
Incubator PMC members review and vote on this incubator release candidate.

Apache Livy (incubating) is web service that exposes a REST interface for
managing long running Apache Spark contexts in your cluster. With Livy, new
applications can be built on top of Apache Spark that require fine grained
interaction with many Spark contexts.

The livy dev voting thread can be found here:
https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@livy.incubator.apache.org/msg00297.html

at:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/livy/

Staging artifacts can be found at:

I've noticed some flaky tests now and then both locally and on travis. I
agree that we should delay this release for them, but would you open (or
find) a JIRA for the flaky tests so we can address them in the next

I'm a -0 on this.

The signatures check and things seem to compile, but I can't get unit
tests to pass.

The default profile (spark 1.6) breaks with jacoco errors for me.

The spark 2.2 profile is a bit better; but I still run into what look
like flaky tests (TestSparkClient fails sometimes, also
SessionHeartbeatSpec).

I don't want to block the release because of those, since maybe it's
something in my environment (haven't really kept up with the
requirements), but it sounds a little odd for unit tests to fail in
the default profile.

Re: Fwd: [apache/incubator-livy] One of your dependencies may have a security vulnerability

2018-01-23 Thread Alex Bozarth

Wow those urls make that email really difficult to understand. I believe
what it says is that the nokogiri version we're setting in the Gemlock file
should be updated to 1.8.1 to fix a known vulnerability? If so it need's to
be addressed in many Apache incubator websites since that Gemlock was
imported from the website repo which was forked from the apache website
template repo. I can patch it in the morning (unless you'd like to do it)
and we can push it to 0.4.1, 0.5.0 and master. I'll have to cut an rc2
tomorrow also in that case.

Re: Looking to contribute

2018-01-10 Thread Alex Bozarth

You are correct that we haven't utilized a beginner label in the JIRA yet.
I would suggest reading through the open JIRAs (there not that many
compared to other projects) and just try some out, that was how I started
last year. And don't worry about opening PRs for everything you start, I
started working on quite a few before realizing it was too much for a
beginner and moving on to another task.

Hello,

I'm a newbie and looking to contribute to Livy.
While I wait for feedback on
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__issues.apache.org_jira_browse_LIVY-2D401=DwIBaQ=jf_iaSHvJObTbx-siA1ZOg=S1_S7Dymu4ZL6g7L21O78VQZ53vEnAyZ-cx37DPYDyo=lp-EoREQVfVgQZDLZoCfWTR9QDjicMNLJYE5Tcsi6ks=ugGesV3vgEsiUD-OU6uvpZ0l_LeLhvIxEieeW0EIdkQ=
,
I
was wondering if there's some more tasks I could take up.

I've searched JIRA already, but barely saw any ones tagged with the newbie
label,
so thought I should ask here.

Thanks,

Re: Can anyone get email about livy jira change

2017-09-13 Thread Alex Bozarth

I think he was talking about getting email notifications from the Apache
JIRA when someone comments on or changes a Livy JIRA.

I looked through my email's trash folder and found that I haven't been
getting any email notifications about Livy JIRAs either, only Spark and
INFRA.

@Jeff: Open an INFRA JIRA to see if there's some setting wrong on the Livy
JIRA Project that's stopping email notifications.

BTW take my comment there with a grain of salt; at the time Livy was being
targeted at mostly being hidden from users, making such a feature not make
much sense in Livy itself. But things may have changed since then,

Hi,

4 months might be too long for a relatively new project like Livy. And
doing a release in December might not be easy with that being holiday
season in many places.

I was thinking of following Spark's history of 3 month releases initially.
That provides about 2 months of feature development work followed by 1
month of time to start a release, go through bug fixes and finish the
process. To be clear, that would be for major releases like 0.5, 0.6 etc.

If sufficient bug fixes accumulate much earlier than that then a minor bug
fix release could be done ahead of time, like you suggest. Specially if
these end up being security fixes.

I think we discussed this some in a previous chain and came to the general
consensus that a time based release cadence was best but didn't settle on
the cadence length. Personally I think every 4 months (thus our next
release around new years) would work well and give us flexibility to
release a bit early or late to match with a Spark release if necessary. I
would say every 6 months based on our previous release rate, but I think
that cadence is too long if we want the project to continue to gain
momentum. As for maintenance/patch releases I think we should release
whenever there's enough fixes to warrant it.

Subject:[DISCUSS] Release Cadence

Hi,

We just did our first release and hopefully have ironed out the release
mechanics and also provided users a transition point to move over their
dependencies to ASF.

I think now would be a good time to figure out our release mechanics.

IMO time based release mechanics have worked out well for projects like
Apache Spark. Regular releases allow for timely updates with bug fixes for
increased stability. Also, they reduce unnecessary angst around features
making into release because there is always the next timely release to
latch on to in case the current release is missed.

Are there other things to consider? E.g. making a concurrent release (even
if its ad-hoc) to match Apache Spark releases because there is a strong
dependency on the project. That would depend on whether we depend/integrate
with new features in that Spark release.

Thanks
Bikas

I think once related doc is updated, all the release work should be done.

I agree with Jeff on the announcement timing, the links on the website PR
are already updated and working, I'll just have to push an update to the
release date once we know when we'll announce the release. And you can
delete the gh-pages branch, it's been moved to the old-site branch on the
website repo.

I think we'd better to announce after the artifacts are published.

2017-08-30 Thread Alex Bozarth

So is the release ready to announce then? The apache bin/src download links
are live so all I need for the website update is an official release date,
would that be today or the day we announce to the user list? On a related
note, should we clean up our branches and tags on the git repo? It makes
sense to remove the rc tags, but should we also get rid of the extra
branches other than "branch-0.x"

Looks like I wronged the releasing process, I should publish jars to
staging repo according with RC vote, and after vote passed click release to
publish jars. But what I currently do is to publish jars to staging repo
after vote passed. I'm really sorry about not familiar with the process. I
will write a doc as well as release script for the next release.

Sorry about it.

For now I had the disable the Bot until we figure out how to just link to
the PRs. The JIRA is still open as I continue to work with INFRA to figure
out the cleanest solution.

I saw Zeppelin also mirror everything from github to JIRA, if INFRA is hard
to change to what you expected, I'm fine with current way. Since Livy is
not so active as Spark, we may not suffer from reviewing pain.

Re: Update ASF GitHub Bot Settings?

2017-08-28 Thread Alex Bozarth

Spark does use a script to do it, but that script requires a special admin
JIRA account and is run via a cron job as part of the pr dashboard website
by Databricks (https://spark-prs.appspot.com). The website source code is
open source and I've actually done quick a bit of work with it, but it
requires a paid Google CloudPlat account to run in production. Overall I
like how Spark does it but it's not as simple to reproduce as it seems. If
someone want to pay for a Google CloudPlat account and set up a ASF JIRA
Bot like Spark's then I can easily set up a LIVY PR Dash that will run the
JIRA update cron job.

Hi Alex,

Do you want to achieve what Spark did in the JIRA? AFAIK Spark uses a
script to sync between github and jira, it doesn't enable gihub robot to
mirror everything from github.

Update ASF GitHub Bot Settings?

2017-08-28 Thread Alex Bozarth

Is there a way to edit the default ASF GitHub Bot settings? I think it's
great that it auto-comments on our JIRAs with links to new PRs, but it's
also auto-commenting on the JIRAs for every single comment on those PRs,
which clutters up both the JIRA and the Activity Stream (which is how I
personally keep up on the Livy JIRAs.

Nice catch, it must not be a big issue though because it's been that way
since the original Livy 0.2.0 release.

@jerry do you think we should update this with a minor and open a rc3 or
just fix it in the next release?

The version of org.apache.httpcomponents:httpclient is different in
/pom.xml from the version in /client-http/pom.xml

/pom.xml --->  ${httpclient.version} ---> 4.5.2
/client-http/pom.xml --->  4.5.1

Is this intended?

Apache JIRA up and running

2017-08-18 Thread Alex Bozarth

Hey team,

As of this morning the Livy project is now in the Apache JIRA, so you can
now open new issues at:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/LIVY

A big thanks the Apache INFRA team, specifically Gavin, for getting the
import finished for us.

Note: All JIRA relations, parent and sub-tasks relations, web links, and
attachments were lost in the import.
I have addressed this manually for all currently open tasks, adding
attachments and links back and linking
parent and sub-task JIRAs with a "Child-Issue" JIRA relation. For more
information on the import process
you can look at the INFRA tracking JIRA:

Re: To release a first Apache version Livy

2017-07-31 Thread Alex Bozarth

There's two open PRs on the livy repo with a follow-up PR on the website
repo:

https://github.com/apache/incubator-livy/pull/25 <- Web UI Log Page
https://github.com/apache/incubator-livy/pull/26 <- Ability to build Livy
Docs
https://github.com/apache/incubator-livy-website/pull/7 <- Add Livy Docs to
Website (it may actually be better to update this and merge it after the
release)

Once the Log Page PR is merged the basic Web UI is complete, the remaining
UI JIRAs are feature adds and tests that can come in the next release.

Need input: Location of Livy Documentation

2017-07-25 Thread Alex Bozarth

Hey Team

Jerry and I have been discussing (on my recent PR) where we should keep the
Livy Documentation files as we move them out of the README. My PR
originally moved the two Doc files (on the REST and Programmatic APIs) into
the livy website repos so we can display them via the website. Jerry
proposed that we keep them in the main livy repo like how Spark does it.
Personally given we have just two files I think leaving them in the website
repo is simplier for us, but I also understand that as the Documentation
grows and changes from version to version it would be better to store it in
the more regularly updated repo.

What are everyone's opinions on where the Docs should be stored? If we
decide to store them in the main repo does anyone have pointers on how to
simply and cleanly sync them to the website for viewing. You can see my
Documenation and README update PRs here:

finish this week).

+1. I think we've been using close to this format, but with "LIVY-XXX."
instead of "[LIVY-XXX]". I can include a copy of this Contributing section
in my next update to the livy website if we want, I almost added something
similar in my first update, but decided not to since it hadn't been
discussed yet.

Thanks Luciano, are there any steps we still need to take for the website
to actually start showing up at livy.incubating.apache.org? It currently
throws a 404 and livy.apache.org, which should also work, doesn't even

Cleaning up the repo branches

2017-07-19 Thread Alex Bozarth

When we moved the repo to apache/incubator-livy we copied all the branches
from cloudera/livy including a few stale branches.

Should we cleanup the repo by deleting the stale branches rel-0.2.0-refresh
and revert-237-LIVY-255 as well as gh-page, since it was moved to
apache/incubator-livy-website?

Re: Another approach for Livy Website

2017-07-17 Thread Alex Bozarth

So it sound like what we want to do is "fork"
apache/apache-website-template into the master branch of
apache/incubator-livy-website then also move the gh-pages branch out of
apache/incubator-livy into apache/incubator-livy-website as well. Unless
there's objection/misunderstanding Luciano, Jerry and I agree on that path
forward.

After these steps happen I will open PRs to update the template with Livy
data (I already have this mostly ready) and, if we want to, can also open a
PR to clean up the old site branch so it doesn't include all the old livy
code, just the old website code.

I think the way Luciano and you mentioned (using template and put old code
into another branch) is good for me, this is much easier for maintaining
and updating compared to directly editing on html files. We can move on the
progress unless someone strongly oppose this way.

Thanks

Re: Another approach for Livy Website

2017-07-14 Thread Alex Bozarth

Just an update so there no duplicate work. I forked the template Luciano
mentioned yesterday and have been slowly updating it and filling it out
with some of the current content. If/Once we decide to use template I
should have a solid initial PR ready that will update it for Livy.

The issue with that though is by using the template we plan to not use the
current site code, so importing it to only completely delete and replace it
doesn't make sense to me. Though if it's not against the Apache guidelines
we could always leave the gh-pages branch in the main repo for prior credit
and start from the template in the website repo. I'm not sure what the
apache guidelines are for branches, we do have a few junk branches in the
repo currently.

Maybe we can apply the original changes to the master branch and then do
the changes based on it to just keep the history.

2017-07-13 Thread Alex Bozarth

The issue with that though is by using the template we plan to not use the
current site code, so importing it to only completely delete and replace it
doesn't make sense to me. Though if it's not against the Apache guidelines
we could always leave the gh-pages branch in the main repo for prior credit
and start from the template in the website repo. I'm not sure what the
apache guidelines are for branches, we do have a few junk branches in the
repo currently.

Maybe we can apply the original changes to the master branch and then do
the changes based on it to just keep the history.
