Building while SourceForge is down
As discussed in https://s.apache.org/sHGE we can't do a clean build while SourceForge is down, to to the fact that oooextras.mirror (where we keep some libraries) is unreachable. I've created a temporary mirror with the files I had locally and with some more files (especially extensions) that Matthias provided. In a completely clean build, you will need to: 1) Change your configure options as follows (to get dmake and epm): ./configure --with-dmake-url=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/dmake-4.12.tar.bz2 --with-epm-url=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/epm-3.7.tar.gz ... 2) Change the fallback URL in external_deps.lst as follows: -OOO_EXTRAS=https://sourceforge.net/projects/oooextras.mirror/files/ +OOO_EXTRAS=http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/ 3) Change URLs in extensions.lst as follows: # English dictionary [ language=en.* || language=de || language=it ] -f4cb089a1101cc06e49d8bbb2886e5cf https://sourceforge.net/projects/aoo-extensions/files/17102/38/dict-en-20171101.oxt/download "dict-en.oxt" +f4cb089a1101cc06e49d8bbb2886e5cf http://home.apache.org/~pescetti/oooextras.mirror/aoo-extensions/dict-en.oxt "dict-en.oxt" Hopefully the SourceForge outage will be resolved soon, so the above changes are not worth committing. Still, once SourceForge comes back we will want to implement a more complete backup plan, something like the following: 1. An emergency space on an ASF server (possibly password-protected while it is not in use) that mirrors oooextras.mirror and is regularly synchronized from it. 2. A refactoring of extensions.lst that makes it possible to switch URLs more easily 3. A mirror of all bundled extensions (not ALL extensions, just the ones we bundle), as a subset of the previous mirror Hopefully, this will allow to build when SourceForge is down (hoping this means "never"!) by simply changing a couple lines. Re: OpenOffice and SourceForge: cruel wedding
Thanks for your patience, what follows it's the result of a joint meeting with our AdOps team and our Managing Director. Ad Ops has paused the Google Ad Exchange ad serving on SourceForge.net's Apache Open Office project pages. This will continue while the team completes our review of the Ad Exchange blocking rules and controls with the Google team. Having said that, I wish to share with you all some background information about the whole process to ban ads and advertisers that are not compliant with our advertising policies. Ad Exchange blocking rules are our first tool of control to block advertising that is non-compliant with company policy. They are quite effective, though not perfect solutions. Unfortunately when malicious advertisers find a way to fool the system, they are eventually able to inject ads that are confusing. Under the Clean Software Alliance umbrella we're collaborating with them to prevent similar ads to get into the marketplace, hopefully that would help them to refine their policies and tools over time. As a second layer of control, our ad operations department regularly reviews the advertising from the Ad Exchange and manually removes advertising and advertisers that bypass the technology controls. They are at the domain and advertiser-level, and are permanent. We also have had some success with the community feedback element to our ad quality process that includes a community feedback form. This has been helpful for us to improve the timeliness of removing ad violations, but it needs end-users' input. With regard to our direct sales and partner advertisers, they remain active and in full compliance with SourceForge ad quality specifications and policies, and we never had similar issues with them. Stay tuned, I will circle back with you next week with more information on progress with our review of policy and ad quality controls. OpenOffice and SourceForge: cruel wedding
Hello forum, There are regularly messages complaining of costly or spammed OpenOffice on the french forum. Because end-users don't have ad blocker, Sf.net shows links to para-sites. The download of the genuine OpenOffice appears delayed, so the user click on this "fake" OpenOffice. As for other projets, I think Apache must not accept such situation: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2931575/open-source-tools/sourceforge-fail-itbwcw.html - To unsubscribe, e-mail: dev-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: dev-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Hi Roberto, Is it possible for SourceForge to implement an active blocking if any ad that has "Office" or "OpenOffice" anywhere in the content? I understand there are technical challenges. It's not as simple as that, some evildoers create ad buttons that show the word "download" or a "play" button (forward triangle). It should be really easy to fix for SF.net if they wanted: 1. CLEAR MESSAGE in bold text, +2 typeface "Your download will start automatically, DO NOT CLICK anywhere until it has started". 2. CLEAR separation of the ads and the page information, e.g. 3-pixel thick line/separator, with the text "ADVERTISING SPACE". I wonder if anyone from AOO has approached them and requested they implement something like this?. LEGIT advertisers shouldn't oppose... Report misleading ads here, following our instructions, see > https://goo.gl/LQFHmE [orcmid] This puts us in the position of playing wack-a-moley and having to watch the download-started page by requesting downloads just to see what happens. That we have to do that, and have no clue what another ad rotation will present, is not practicable. The main way these come to our attention is when users stumbles into them. I wanted to download the new update 4.1.2 but during installation download directs me to install video converter, without the possibility of refusing I finally agreed, but downloading this application crashes and installation stops. Consequently I can not install the new update due to the imposition of video converter. Best regards Philippe Roig === Is it not time to _*SERIOUSLY*_ review the distribution of our binaries via SourceForge? Rory O'Farrell and others dutifully expend their valuable time advising "unaware" users NOT to click on download links and buttons after they are redirected to the SourceForge mirror page. While commendable, this is a "shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted" approach. No matter what efforts SourceForge make to "weed out" fraudulent and malware links, our mailing lists and forums continue to receive a steady stream of download problem messages from "unaware" users. There is no way to prove this discourages individuals and organizations from using AOO software, but continuously published reports of AOO distributing "unwanted" and/or "malware" programs reflects badly on us and by association the ASF. I have no personal "gripe" against SourceForge and Roberto Galoppini's support in this area is invaluable. However, I do not understand, or find any reasonable explanation, why our download page does not redirect to the ASF's own mirror network: https://www.apache.org/mirrors/ where our binaries are already being served by 200+ mirrors around the world. [not cross-posting] SourceForge is valuable to the project for providing the mirror capacity that AOO requires. The penalty is in regard to user distrust and these awful situations that the list and Forum folks have to contend with. As far as our users are concerned, it is the AOO project that is unreliable and has them need to be so cautious. Of course SourceForge relies on advertising revenue to offset their costs. That is to be expected. The problem is the confusion, not the advertising. We must work with SourceForge to avoid the confusion with regard to ad placement and prominence. Andrea has pointed out separately that the alternative mirror system may not be workable if even available for the demands that AOO downloads represent. - Dennis > -Original Message- > From: Dave Barton [mailto:d...@tasit.net] > Sent: Saturday, November 21, 2015 07:09 > To: Apache OpenOffice Users <us...@openoffice.apache.org> > Cc: Apache OpenOffice Developer <dev@openoffice.apache.org> > Subject: SOURCEFORGE [Was: téléchargement version 4.1.2] [ ... ] > > Is it not time to _*SERIOUSLY*_ review the distribution of our binaries > via SourceForge? > > Rory O'Farrell and others dutifully expend their valuable time advising > "unaware" users NOT to click on download links and buttons after they > are redirected to the SourceForge mirror page. Leaving all the SourceForge discussion aside, one reasonable explanation for this last question is that the vast majority of Apache mirrors do NOT mirror OpenOffice: those who do are a minority. I've just tried with the Italian mirrors and only 2 out of 7 offer OpenOffice. Load balancers are broken by this incomplete mirroring: even if you try to download the source package http://openoffice.apache.org/downloads.html you often have to try multiple mirrors before getting one that works. In short, the ASF mirror network is not nearly as complete and reliable as it seems at a first look (besides having other issues such as lack of stats and lack of unique download URLs). Re: Sourceforge
(I did not see any reason this discussion should go private, so I moved it to public.) As far as I read, the GIMP team had never opt-in distributing adwares/malwares. They did agree to share SF.net's ad profit, but not bundling adwares/malwares with their installers. And SF.net did hijacked GIMP for Windows without authors' consent. Goodbye, SourceForge. https://helb.github.io/goodbye-sourceforge/ Anatomy of SourceForge/GIMP controversy (from GIMP team) http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/anatomy-of-sourceforge-gimp-controversy What happened to Sourceforge? (from VLC developer) https://blog.l0cal.com/2015/06/02/what-happened-to-sourceforge/ I looked into which projects SF.net hijacked, and surprisingly found Apache HTTPD, Apache Derby, Apache Directory Studio, Firefox, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Nmap, The R-project. Apache HTTPD, Apache Derby, Apache Directory Studio, Nmap, R http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor3/profile/ GIMP, VLC http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor1/profile/ Firefox, MySQL, PostgreSQL http://sourceforge.net/u/sf-editor/profile/ So who's next? Apache OpenOffice? When will there be a new malware/adware-enabled Apache OpenOfffice installer? I suppose we should move from SF.net to a trustworthy mirror solution. Just as I stated above. Also if you follow dev@ you know that by the facts we remove unwanted or misleading ads in hours. http://danluu.com/slashdot-sourceforge/ It seems like this is not up-to-date too, as far as I know Slashdot editor after the week-end catched up with everything, included this. Of course there is as usual space for conspirancy theories, but you understand I can't help with that. Unless you have something else I think I've covered everything, if you or someone else has more questions I'll be happy to answer. Roberto I don’t think that seeing this as a fuss and deprecating it as unimportant or trivial (in some way) either because it’s a storm in a teacup or old news or misinterpreted news is useful to us or to SF. louis On 01 Jun 2015, at 15:31, Roberto Galoppini roberto.galopp...@gmail.com wrote: Louis, I'm pretty sure I've read most of it, not sure to which one you're referring to. IMHO this needs to stop. It should be something as simple as a section in the SourceForge terms of service for its advertisers banning adverts that impersonate or mention FOSS projects hosted on sourceforge.net, maybe adding something about deceptive advertising or deceptive clicking. Actually none of our direct advertisers ask us to deliver similar ads, nor we would allow them to do that. Unfortunately advertising networks like Google allow that to happen, and that's where the problem comes from. This week we removed three deceptive ads coming that way, but since those advertising networks do not provide much control over the type/content of displayed ads. We're now talking to their accounts to identify a better approach. I mean it´s one thing to offer an OpenOffice add-on and another entirely to offer an AOO download from an external site. If SourceForge doesn´t put an end to this, they´re willing accomplices and are hurting AOO with full knowledge. I can tell that from our GM down fixing this is a top priority, as usual I'll let facts talk. SourceForge and commercial ads - continued
Hello again, Two days later the questionable ads are still there, with a variant. I see a blue square indicated : updatechecker. When I click it I get another panel from http://www.marbiz.net saying (in french) : Searching for OpenOffice latest version Download button And then the Conditions : chapter 0. SourceForge intentionally delays the real download by 5 seconds, letting the abused surfer the time to click on a paying service which has IMHO unacceptable conditions (read them). Please, reply directly to the mailing list, not me, else the thread does not appear on archivers GMane and Mail Archive. Bernard Date: Nov 17, 2014 9:11:38 am List: org.apache.incubator.ooo-dev The above mentioned ads has been removed from the catalog, it will disappear in the next hour.
