I hear that this is a known issue with dnf5 at the moment.

Just to check, you are aware that dnf5 is still being developed?

We need a kernel storage expert to tell us the definitive truth on this stuff.
I may be out of date on this stuff.

What I understand is that the drive will be told via the appropriate SCSI(?)
command
that it must not reorder the writes. Failure to implement that command means the
drive will not have WHQL from Microsoft. Without WHQL its very hard to sell a
drive
in the market place.

As I understand it the kernel will request that writes are not cached. Which
means
that journaling file systems do in fact work well.

As an aside a few years ago (10+ years?) Microsoft found that HDDs where using
caching
to spoof benchmark results.

But this was leading to support hell for Microsoft with user reporting corrupt
file systems to them.

What Microsoft did was refuse to issue WHQL for any disk that did not have a
write
through cache. We in Linux land benefit from this as spoofing hardware, I
believe, is
not a common occurrence any more.

Would konsole on plasma desktop picking up PATH from systemd?

The alternative would be to symlink the "right" version of a program/library

I have been fixing pycxx and pysvn for python 3.12.
I have released new pycxx and pysvn upstream that fix the 3.12 issues.

But I did not see your message about not building in rawhide, sorry.

python-pycxx was buildt in rawhide.
I have not built pysvn in rawhide.

For both packages I have pushed updates to sources and spec file that are needed
for 3.12 support.

For pycxx need to have conditional access to _Py_PackageContext and replace use
of distutils.

For pysvn fix a SEGV when the process exits.

I'm using Oracle Linux 8 at work and some older scripts use "yum" and newer
scripts use "dnf" this all just works.

What is the confusion that you are trying to avoid?

The only issue that I recall from earlier in the thread is that dnf version 5
is not feature complete enough to replace dnf version 4.

Is there any database that is corrupted if dnf v4 and dnf v5 commands are mixed

Its in the dnf history info 1 so in the Fedora KDE base install, not what you
suggest,
no chrome stuff installed.

Also dnf remove does not try to pull out any thing by a few deps of rsyslog.

Why install rsyslog by default?

2022-08-25 Thread Barry Scott
I just found that rsyslog is installed and by default creating legacy
log files in /var/log like messages and secure.

Now that journald has been in Fedora for so long this is useful
default to install rsyslog?

Cannot report selinux bug...

2022-05-29 Thread Barry Scott
I was told to report an selinux bug.

I clicked the report bug button and was asked for my API key.
Then I created the API key and plugged that in and hit OK.

Now I am being asked to unlock a keyring (?) with the name
"default". It is not locked with my password.

I'm on KDE. Is this "default" a gnome thing? If so how do I
set it up under KDE.

Then I can get back to reporting the selinux bug.

Useful command!

It found a number of packages to remove.

One was a package that I built to locally and installed from the command line,
which it
correctly identified as not in F36.

I like that it prompts for each package on its own. This meant that I could
remove the
3 that I do not need to keep but leave the one that I do need.

I think you are better off asking on the fedora arm mailing list or the fedora

dnf install removes /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.wants/myservice.target symlink

2022-02-07 Thread Barry Scott
This is not for a package in Fedora, its for a package I'm
working on for Oracle Linux 8.

I install /usr/lib/systemd/system/myservice.target
that has:

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

In %post I run this:

ls -l /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants
/usr/bin/systemctl --no-reload enable ods-prx.target
ls -l /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants
echo "Info: post done"

When I dnf install myservice I see that the symlink is
setup from the ls -l output in the %post section.

But later in the output I see this line:

Info: post done

  Running scriptlet: myservice-2022.1-20220207180603.noarch
Removed /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/myservice.target.

Is this expected?

How can I stop this happening?

If its not expected how can I pull apart the RPM to find the code that is
running?

Barry

You can add me as co-maintainer. I'm happy to review any future changes
and discuss packing issues.

Also I like that you have made important improvement to the packaging.
I was working around the problems with being able to pass args to the
prometheus and node-exported command lines.

I found that you made another breaking changes.

You changed the UID/GID for node_exporter's text-collector folder from
node_exporter to prometheus. I'm not convinced that is a useful change.
I was running processes that write to that folder Group=node_exporter.
Now I have to use Group=prometheus and that seems wrong to me.

Why can my collector also access prometheus resources via Group permissions?
Isn't it better that node_exporter and prometheus are keep apart?

I guess what is surprising me is that it's a breaking change and that was not
noticed in review or dev testing.

I have now updated golong-github-prometheus that has more breaking changes to
handle.

The change in the way that .service file handles arguments is welcome.
But its not compatible with the previous .service files handling.

Was:

$ rpm -ql golang-github-prometheus-node-exporter-1.2.2-1.fc35.x86_64 | grep
service
/etc/systemd/system/node_exporter.service
/usr/share/doc/golang-github-prometheus-node-exporter/examples/systemd/
node_exporter.service

Now is:

$ rpm -ql golang-github-prometheus-node-exporter-1.3.1-4.fc35.x86_64 | grep
service
/usr/lib/systemd/system/prometheus-node-exporter.service
/usr/share/doc/golang-github-prometheus-node-exporter/examples/systemd/
node_exporter.service

So the why is that it puts the service file in the right place.

That leaves the impact of the fix.

Why was node_exporter.service renamed to prometheus-node-exporter.service?

2022-01-28 Thread Barry Scott
I just had to fix a number of my servers that use node exporter.

The service name has been changed. Why was this done and did no one
think about the impact on users?

In the worst case I had a server fail to reboot because I had
Requires=node_exporter.service in the default target.

Thanks. I'll follow up when I get a quiet moment.

I have this working in my copr, but it was a lot harder than I hoped.
All the parts are in
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/barryascott/tools-testing/

This is now a lot more then a PR...

I had to:
* package pytz_deprecation_shim that is a new dependance.
* add boiler plate setup.py to allow the setup.cfg to be used to build tzlocal
* add AutoProvReg: no to stop unused refs being auto added (should only need
AutoProv: no).
* turn off the tests in %check as they want to use pip to install stuff
* learn that rpmbuild is not close to mock/copr build again :-)

Just found that I also need a pytz-deprecation-shim.
I tried to build on copr into my tools-testing project with:

$ copr-cli buildpypi --chroot=fedora-35-x86_64
--packagename=pytz-deprecation-shim --pythonversions=3 tools-testing

This fails reporting that setup.py is missing, which is true it provided
setup.cfg only.
I've not see setup.cfg before but a bit of searching I found that I can build
via:

$ python3  -m build --no-isolation

That builds a wheel.

Is there an example .spec that I can use to package this setup.cfg only PyPI
project?

I have added a patch for the spec file for python-tzlocal.spec

I can raise a PR if that helps, but I have not done that before

That works great.

Next time pysvn is build the %check will work.

locale available in mock build for python package %check

2020-12-13 Thread Barry Scott
I'm looking at getting the %check of the pysvn package working.

What I'm seeing is the tests fail because of an issue with python3.9 and
locales.

The test code uses locale.getdefaultlocale() to find out what can be set and
uses locale.setlocale() to init the locale.

After mock fails to run the %check I do this to investigate:

$ mock -r fedora-33-x86_64 --shell --no-clean
...
 sh-5.0# locale
LANG=C.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="C.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="C.UTF-8"

LC_MONETARY="C.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="C.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="C.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="C.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="C.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="C.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C.UTF-8"

return _setlocale(category, locale)
locale.Error: unsupported locale setting
>>> locale.setlocale(locale.LC_ALL, 'C.UTF-8')
'C.UTF-8'
>>>

I see this from the f33 command line:

$ LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 python3.9 -c 'import locale;print(locale.getdefaultlocale())'
('en_US', 'UTF-8')
$ LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8 python3.9 -c 'import
locale;print(locale.getdefaultlocale())'
('de_DE', 'UTF-8')
$ LC_ALL=en_GB.UTF-8 python3.9 -c 'import
locale;print(locale.getdefaultlocale())'
('en_GB', 'UTF-8')

Not sure what is wrong here.

python does not report C.UTF-8 as the default.
mock does not have en_US.UTF-8 setup.

Is my way forward to add en_US.UTF-8 locale?
What do I add to the spec file to do that?

It seems that gdb cannot find debuginfo on f32

2020-06-07 Thread Barry Scott
I'm trying to debug a segv in PyQt5 and I hit a problem with gdb
not finding debug info in f32.

I have installed python3.8 debug info.

@updates-debuginfo
python3-qt5-base-debuginfo.x86_645.13.2-5.fc32

@fedora-debuginfo

But still gdb says it cannot find the debuginfos.

I have Fedora installed on the HDD of this PC and it boots without any issues.

Its only the live CD that has the issue.

Given that my PC boots from HDD but not live USB image I'm not
so sure that that bug is the problem. Especically if its efivars that are
the root cause as that should be the same for my HDD and USB?

How to debug live CD image?

2020-05-24 Thread Barry Scott
My desktop PC is happily running Fedora for years.
Its on Fedora 32 now. It also has Windows 10 dual
boot via Grub.

But I cannot boot a live CD image as it gets stuck
in "Monitoring of LVM2 mirrors, ...". This is not a
new problem I have seen this for a couple of Fedora
releases, but not reported it before.

I have tested with both the Workstation image and
the KDE spin image. Both get stuck at the same place.

How do I go about debugging what is going on?

user services run during system-upgrade

I raise this https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1829799 with details
that show that users sessions are started up and user services run during
the dnf system-upgrade. This is clearly not a good idea.

It has been triaged, but its not a RPM script issues as suggested.

What is force erasing python 2 packages like moin?

2020-05-10 Thread Barry Scott
I know that python2 is a dead language, but I have a need to use some python 2
code
on one of my servers. It's clearly on me to maintain the old code if I choose
to use it.

I use MoinMoin via mon_wsgi.

After upgrading to fedora 32 I took the trouble to install moin using the F31
package.
And all was good.

But I just did my first dnf update and was surprised to find these lines in the
log of
the dnf update:

---> Package moin.noarch 1.9.10-3.fc31 will be erased
---> Package python2-mod_wsgi.x86_64 4.6.6-2.fc32 will be erased

What is forcing the erase? I need to workaround this.

Did you calculate file sizes including rounding up by the
"filesystem block size" (statvfs f_bsize)?

What was the f_bsize of the file system you collected stats on?

The work to stop needing libpython is going to drop the number of files by 1
for the min install.

Can you link some of the .so's from stdlib into the main python image?

If all stdlib .so are linked into the main python and you have .zip for the
.py/.pyc files you can get python down to a handful of files.

Python app making software often exploits a trick that you can concatenate
the .zip on the end of the python image. I'm guessing that would break too many
of the constraints.

I'm not sure how you would do it but what if you created a SquashFS image
for python to lose the f_bsize overhead and use its compression?

Today python has 2 optimised file types. But the python devs have been talking
about ways to implement more optimisations and cache those results as well.
I'll failed to track down the discussion on python dev. I recall wanting to
reduce the file size by storing line number data for traceback outside of
the .pyc.

fedpkg update - Could not generate update request for f31

2019-07-21 Thread Barry Scott
For python-pycxx I have been working on an update.
The builds for f29, f30 and f31 all all good done on 2019-07-08.

I can use fedpkg update for f29 and f30.
But get this for master (aka f31?) when I ran it today.

$ fedpkg switch-branch master
$ fedpkg update
Could not execute update: Could not generate update request: Cannot find
release associated with build: python-pycxx-7.1.3-1.fc31, tags: ['f31']

I guess there is something I need to understand/fix to get this to update.

Self introduction: Barry Scott

2019-03-04 Thread Barry Scott
I have become the new maintainer for the pysvn package on Fedora.

I am the upstream developer for a number of projects including:
* pysvn - https://pysvn.sourceforge.io/
* pycxx - http://cxx.sourceforge.net/
* Barry's Emacs - http://barrys-emacs.org/
* SCM workbench - http://scm-workbench.barrys-emacs.org/

These days I tend to develop in python and C++ using PyQt for GUI needs.
The above projects work on Unix, macOS and Windows.

I have been using Fedora since FC4 and maybe before,
too long ago to remember.

I would also like to volunteer to be a co-maintainer of
python-pycxx.

My first task will be to update pysvn to its 1.9.9 release
but that requires pycxx to be updated to its 7.1.2 release
to pick up a needed fix.

I have a review up for the changes to python-pycxx at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1685102

using the instruction in the Wiki.

It might be the weekend before I have time to do this.

Do you need to add me to the "fedora packager group"

GitPython update blocked by rpkg - how can this be resolved?

2016-11-10 Thread Barry Scott
In this bug

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1360797

It is implied that rpkg has an unspecified problem with GitPython 2.0.

This is preventing the maintainer from updating to the any GitPython 2
release.

I'd like to know if there is in fact a problem with rpkg with GitPython 2.0.

If there is a problem it would be nice if the rpkg people could comment on the
difficult of supporting GitPython 2. The python2.6 support question I suspect
can be handled by version checking in any conflicting code.

It seems wrong that rpkg is blocking updating to the latest GitPython,
preventing user of GitPython getting the bugs fixes and (as far as I am aware)
backwards compatible improvements.

 It's fixed in autogen-5.18-1.fc20. The F19 ntp spec includes a
 workaround touch ntpd/ntpd.1 util/ntp-keygen.1, which prevents
 autogen from rebuilding the man pages. If you are patching other
 autogen files in the ntp code, you'll need to update the autogen
 package or similarly touch the other man pages.

Thanks for the info.

I found the touch commands in the first F20 ntp SRPM and that got the rpmbuild
working.

I see that some work was done for F20 (fixing date issues in %changelog). But
it still fails the same way when I build the F20 SRPM on F19.
