Re: [IxDA Discuss] Type ahead vs. auto fill

2009-07-13 Thread Julia
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with Sarah.

Auto fill - is the functionality provided by browser or some 3d party
plugins such as Google toolbar. This functionality let's you create
personal profile and store some of the frequently used details on
your PC (for example: First/Last name, phone numbers, email address
etc). Once you arrive at a web page that gathers such details, the
browser (or Google toolbar in our example) recognize this, and colors
the fields that can be auto filled in other color (by default -
pale yellow) to let you know that you can use the auto fill option.

The Type Ahead functionality is similar to Sarah's example, but by
default it wouldn't include any additional popups/windows/menus. The
classic example - is Google search. When you type in your keyword, the
system automatically pulls up options that may be relevant for your
search.

These are different behaviors and may be used together if you have
long list of options that do not appear in your user profile and thus
cannot be auto filled.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Type ahead vs. auto fill

2009-07-13 Thread Jeroen Elstgeest
Is there a real difference between the 2 examples? In example 1 Google uses
a list with all keywords/sentences Google knows. Example 2 uses a smaller
list, but both of them are still lists. Google doesn't make words up
on-the-fly.

Auto-fill is what Julia says it is. Maybe you mean autocomplete?

But there is a difference in how you present the Typing
ahead-functionality:
  - You can do it with a dropdownlistbox as in the browser searchbox (you
first have to perform an action (with your mouse) and then you can press
enter)
  - You can do it with an auto complete (inline, you can click enter the
minute it matches your desired destination) as with what the Safari
addressbar does

Type ahead works slightly differently. Go to Endless.com, Click on
Womens, then start typing a brand into the Brand area in the
left navigation to narrow your results. This feature automatically
pulls up the items from the pre-set list of brands that match what
you are typing. It's not actually filling in your words for you.

David,

The simple truth is that you don't like Microsoft. I get it. But
it's not a constructive point to make on this list.

There is nothing preventing you from using this app on your chosen
platform. You aren't being denied anything. You have your personal
preferences -- sometimes they work in your favor, and sometimes they
don't. It is your choice. However, your method for expressing
dismay (however misleading the euphemism) is highly insulting to
those who don't share your viewpoint.

As someone who chooses different personal preferences, I would
respectfully ask that in the future, you try to avoid airing this
particular gripe at individuals who develop products. I'm sure a lot
of people were involved in its development, and your comments dismiss
and demean their hard work simply based on the name of their
employer.

I'm sort of living in Blend 3 these days, styling a major WPF application.
Haven't had a chance to use the Sketchflow portion yet since I'm working on
production deliverables and am a bit behind schedule.

The Blend 3 RC is considerably more stable than the preview release, which
crashed frequently when I'd open a code-behind file, or sometimes even just
selecting something from the Object menu. The Adobe Illustrator imports are
95% great in Blend 3, only missing on some color accuracy and alpha values.
Can't round-trip vector graphics, but support for Illustrator imports has
really helped me out for this project.

Blend 3 continues to be alternately handy and frustrating as a vehicle for
designers to spruce up WPF and Silverlight applications. The XAML editor is
much improved by the addition of Intellisense, but there are still moments
when the parser thinks your code is busted but it really isn't. Blend also
seems to do strange stuff to solution and project files sometimes, to the
point that I only create new resource dictionaries and make other
project-level changes using Visual Studio now.

At some point I'll write up my experience styling WPF components in a
serious production application, but I'm too busy today. Let me just mention
that it feels more like hacking than like design. Plus it's given me one of
the low points of my technology career when I realized that to style an
80-line screen took more than 800 lines of nearly unreadable and probably
dangerous XAML template code.

Ok off now to dive into 3rd-party UI components with a debugger, see how
they put them together, hook up their default styles, hack them until they
look right, and try not to break something. Life as a designer in the 21st
century...

So, has anyone tried EP3 with Sketchflow? What's your experience so far?

I've given EB3.0 a quick run. Everything below is the result of a very
rough first impression based on few minutes of usage.

On first opening, it looks very similar to several Rapid Application
Development tools by Adobe to which I'm familiarized. In particular,
the layout, tools and icons show a strong resemblance to the Flex IDE
- down to the dark default color theme.

Said that, the SketchFlow specific functions seem a very much welcome
addition for prototyping work. The SketchFlow map is a usable state
transition diagram, which is a godsend after trying to create state
flows through Visio background pages.

The SketchFlow animation panel looks at first like a highly visual
comic-strip version of the Flash timeline, enhanced with an recorder
that allows creating transition states by interactive demonstration.

Overall it seems that it will be a really good way to create simple
transition diagrams for navigating the main application or website
structure, but I still remain wary about the ease to create more
fine-grained complex interactions through predefined or extensible
behaviors.

Cheers

[IxDA Discuss] Digitial newspaper/magazine editions user experience

2009-07-13 Thread Rob Enslin
Good afternoon,
With print production costs spiralling out of control I'm currently looking
at alternative ways at presenting our magazine content - perhaps in a
digital format? Our product is currently available online, but I've noticed
many newspapers offer a digital edition to its users... in addition to its
website content (and print versions).

Personally, I struggle to enjoy these digital editions with page
peelers/turners, animations, zooming, etc as far as a UX goes - I'd prefer
to consume the website version or paper.

Does anyone know if research has been conducted (or has conducted research)
to support digital editions in terms of a positive user experience (user
outcomes)? Or, is it perhaps a notion that large newspapers simply do to
offer/repackage their content in a different format?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Digitial newspaper/magazine editions user experience

2009-07-13 Thread jesse
In my experience, users are looking for the same general content
online as in print, but there are vastly different expectations in
terms of presentation. For the most part these expectations make
sense. Why would a publisher simply place their print materials
online? Was early TV just a video of people reading stories that
were previously on the radio? Was the length, distribution, and
format of literature the same after the printing press? As with any
new technology it is best to leverage its strengths, and users
intuitively expect that.

Examples of some of the things that have come up in my research are:

Timeliness and updates. Real time web
More visual information including extra pictures and video.
A more familiar feel (e.g., bloggers you can identify and 'get to
know').
Hyperlinks and recommendations for related content (on and off site).
Search (obv).
Depending upon situation, maybe personalization and ability to narrow
down what is presented.

I am sure there are more. I doubt that users would get excited if
you posted a pdf version of your magazine to the interwebs.

Locast is an innovative platform for sharing and discovering
location-based user-generated videos and production quality
multimedia content provided by RAI TV. It consists of a combination
of mobile and wearable computing elements supported by a distributed
Web application. Content gathered from RAI TV’s historical archives

I have a few concerns:

- how traditional broadcast TV can take advantage of such

- can such service improve the user experience of travelers?

- what's the role of mobile technology in this application?
open-source or proprietary? Open-API to encourage 3rd party

There's been a lot of research on this topic, primarily from the folks

And, no, there's no evidence to suggest that anything beyond an
article rendered in HTML provides any positive experience to the reader.

The best-of-class in online news these days are, in my opinion, New

Flash, Microsoft Sketchflow, and Microsoft Silverlight allow companies
to provide their clients with interactive prototypes that can be
leveraged in the final product. We’ll discuss how these tools are
currently used in the marketplace and where they’re going in the
future.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Meaning of Hard Coding Colors?

2009-07-13 Thread Stephen Holmes
It is best to not hard-code anything on a page that can be better
coded in a CSS file as a class. It just means that if you need to
change anything it is changed once in the CSS file and then all pages
that use that CSS file to define positioning, padding, colours etc.
are all changed at once. It is a code management issue really.

Stephen

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Meaning of Hard Coding Colors?

2009-07-13 Thread Dan Harrelson
I think that Stephen is on the right track. The person who suggested
to you that colors not be hard coded is likely trying to ensure that
the swapping of one or more colors throughout the system is as
painless as possible. Minimize the amount of find and replace.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Meaning of Hard Coding Colors?

2009-07-13 Thread Jarrod Lombardo
There's also a problem from the accessibility standpoint. You can't
know if a user of your product does or does not have some sort of
color-blindness or other visual impariment. The best case for the
user is for every color (and font, and font-size) you use by default
to be customizable to whatever colors work best for them. From the
perspective of an accessibility specialist, any color that cannot
easily be changed by the user is hard-coded and a bad usability
experience.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Going beyond Usability: The need to design for Persuasion, Emotion, and Trust

2009-07-13 Thread adrian chan
Don't forget social interaction design ideas. Especially if the
interaction model is communication-based. Persuasion could then be
divided into commercial or strategic persuasiveness, and mutually-
reciprocated persuasion (implying understanding or even agreement).
When two parties are involved in a mutually persuasive outcome, you
have an intersubjective interaction model. E.g. human communication.

[IxDA Discuss] game design for business apps

2009-07-13 Thread Victor Lombardi
I saw John Ferrara give an earlier version of this presentation in
Amsterdam last year and he blew me away. Everyone I talked to wanted
to learn game design after seeing him, and I knew we had to make his
work available to a wider audience. His webinar will be this Thursday
at 18:00 GMT / 1pm EST / 10am PST.

A tiny video preview is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAxxAjzTdT4

More info and sign up:
http://www.rosenfeldmedia.com/webinars/game-design/

IxDA peeps get 20% off with the discount code IXDAWBNR, and we've
lowered the price to a more recession-friendly $99. Some people gather
large groups and show it on a projector/beamer and listen on
speakerphone, making it a good value for a group session.

Best,
Victor Lombardi

Re: [IxDA Discuss] [PLUG] My Blog - Edible/Usable - the usability of cooking and eating

2009-07-13 Thread Julie Stanford
Kim,

I LOVE your blog. Simply love the concept of what you are doing. This has
been an issue that has been on my mind for a long time because I think there
is a lot of similarlity between cooking/recipes/users and design/users. For
example, when I visited Sunset Magazine recently at their open house, they
described how they develop recipes and user test them in their test kitchen
(does this sound familiar?!). Also, I think that magazines/restaurants have
similar challenges introducing new things as creators of new digital
experiences have.

How do magazines create new popular recipes when people like cooking old
standby comfort foods? How do restaurants create buzz and a return
customers? Although I don't think the problems are identical, I think there
is definitely a lot of crossover.

Thanks for putting this blog together!

Julie Stanford
