Re: [slim] Re: Briefly show now playing, song info when song is changed.
i am curious tho, why do some have many comments, but nearly no votes? and how many votes are needed to get attention on optional things like these? Because people don't vote. Or because some people prefer fixing an open issue instead of adding new stuff? Sometimes those comments are used to collect data about an error, discuss possible solutions etc. And you can attach patches which might add/fix something. Is there an archive of older slimserver versions that I can download v5.4.1 for windows? If not does someone have an older version they could email? Slimserver rules, and I have a laptop in the living room for control, but I don't want to have to cross compile the slimserver client software on the device to get it working with 6.x. [slim] Duplicate tracks due to paths in playlist?
I've noticed that quite a few of my albums include duplicate tracks. I'm pretty sure that it's only been a problem since I started installing 6.3 versions. I'm on XP Pro and run Fishbone Tan. The reason for at least some of these instances appears to be related to the path to the track used in the playlist. For instance, if I view the song info for a duplicate track the path for one is listed as: D:\A-M\10CC - Hits [1996]\01 - The Wall Street Shuffle.flac and the other as: \\Music\maxtorot3\A-M\10CC - Hits [1996]\01 - The Wall Street Shuffle.flac \\Music is my dedicated laptop. Drive D (The Maxtor OneTouch 3) is the one with my music folder and playlist folder. Slimserver runs from my C drive on Music. The playlist references the track as: ..\A-M\10CC - Hits [1996]\01 - The Wall Street Shuffle.flac i.e. it looks up to the root of D from the playlist directory and then down to my A-M music directory. Slimserver references my Music and Playlist directories as: D:\SB_Shortcut (with shortcut to music directories A-M and N-Z) and D:\Playlists I'm uncertain if this is a problem with the way Slimserver handles paths or if I should be configuring paths differently. I'm quite surprised no one else has reported seeing this though (which always makes me doubt myself). Any help would be most appreciated. [slim] Re: Feature request: downloading songs from SlimServer
very interesting. kdf Wrote: 1)it's not our fault what the user does with it Many aplications for file sharing, claim that it is only a tool and that they can't be responsible for what users do with it. Groups like the RIAA only see song titles and start issuing court orders. Search on google already and you can get song listings from someone's slimserver. Think in terms of not getting their attention at all, and not having to even get to teh point of arguing the finer points of 'facilitating'. How could such a feature be implemented in such a way that a user can't, say, through ignorance or a simple slip, end up with their entire song catalogue as a download (ie, maybe stay away from a simple playlist link, or at least make it not internet downloadable, for example) i kinda reject this whole premise for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that the per song DL feature is already built in, and yet, has not brought the attention of the RIAA. and lest we forget, the streaming feature (with or without bitrate limiting) is never going to go away, and there are many stream rippers that could do exactly what a normal DL would do. someone could loadup a playlist with anything, all albums, random, whatever, and a stream ripper would do exactly what a straight DL would do. i think all acknowledge that file sharing isn't the purpose of the app, and as a p2p app, its miserable, b/c u have to use something like google to search. as a defense to the google search, SS could be configured to not be open by default, assign some default pword, or randomize it per SS DL. avoiding red flags is a good idea... but to what degree? is it really necessary to avoid straight album DL links when it can be achieved song by song, or as a stream? i don't think the RIAA has the right to assume criminality when there is a legitimate use. it also depends what is shared. lets not forget, p2p itself is not illegal. should we deny tools b/c some might use it illegally? i believe in the rights of copyright holders, but i don't believe those trump my rights to p2p or whatever else legally. i think its reprehensible to err on the side of killing all p2p to protect copyrighted material, instead of erring on the rights of those to legally p2p. but without a built in search app, and since SS is so clearly other things first and foremost, i don't think the RIAA could ever take action, although they might one day eventually notice. kdf Wrote: 2) Rhapsody, iTunes (should apple ever allow this party drm users) Slim devices has recently brought in a couple of high profile partnerships with Pandora, and Rhapsody. The latter is very specific about how their api is used and what kind of access if there for their DRM. Now, I realise their music is internet and it woudlnt' be possible to download anyway, but lets assume their executives are not up to speed on the inherent impossibility of downloading a complete song. consideration must be given as to how to respond to their paranoia as well. Consider how that could be approached. whats interesting about this, is that in response to the insanity of DRM, hardware is already available to defeat it. as far as i know, DRM does not impede the RCA lyra device i mentioned elsewhere. in addition to that, linksys has put out this product: http://reviews.cnet.com/Linksys_WMB54G_Wireless_G_Music_Bridge/4505-3243_7-31660626.html?tag=pop the reason DRM doesn't work on these, is that it places the sound card on the OTHER end of the equation... this is just going to keep going on, DRM is a dumb idea whose time will end as solutions defeat it. personally, i wonder what SB will do to keep pace with these DRM defeaters. to more specifically answer your Q, i don't know how anyone can successfully fully answer and meet the concerns of someone who is unreasonable. kdf Wrote: 3) Lastly, one idea off the top of my head, a feature could be available that uses a playlist simply to feed a list of filenames to an outside application for conversion or burning, rather than an actual download of files that creates a save as dialog box. Something like a separate script, akin to the split scanner, that takes the list and dumps files to a pre-specified location on the same hard drive. i don't know what the split scanner is or does, but sure, i have no problem with whatever method to feed a burner or whatever locally. however, i still want the ability to simply grab an album remotely without having to go thru the unnecessarily clumsy streaming method. kdf Wrote: This is just one idea. I'm only suggesting consideration for a more complete discussion of the implementation, instead of just a chant for make my albums downloadable that leaves all the thought and effort to those at which the chanting is directed. I've run into this problem resently as well when starting squeezeslave from the init scripts. Turns out, in my case anyway, that the read keypress loop spins, due to not having a true pty to read from. Try redirecting stdin and stdout to an unused pty. I've also redirected stderr to the pty as well. Doing this dropped my CPU utilization to 60% on an old P133 MMX laptop I use to pipe music outside on the deck. For example; squeezeslave hostname /dev/vc/8 /dev/vc/8 21 You can do a 'ps -fe | grep getty' to find out what your pty devices are and pick one that's not listed.Don't use '7' as it's usually reserved for X. -- ralphy ralphy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3484 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25438 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Playing random songs in a decade
Also remember that slimserver allows the possibility of multiple values in tags, with the separator as specified under Server settings Behavior. You could create genres for 1960s, 1970s, etc. and random play within genres. For example, if the separator is a semi-colon, you could have Punk; 1970s. Alternatively, tagging rules for some formats allow for multiple tags of the same type. For FLAC Ogg you could have Genre=Punk and Genre=1970s for the same track. BUT, either of these workarounds involve considerable effort in fiddling with tags, and I really like the original suggestion of having slim figure out how to make decade groups out of existing year tags. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25503 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Because if you try to lookup invalid.domain.com using the system library, you'll block the entire SlimServer for many seconds. What we do now is: localhost = 127.0.0.1 single-word domain = use system library for lookup, it's probably in a hosts file or LAN DNS server, so lookup should be fast. normal domain - async lookup using first working nameserver (discovered at SlimServer startup time). -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25454 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Duplicate tracks due to paths in playlist?
Yup, I noticed that one, too, but with Linux. There is a problem with 6.3.0 IMHO. If you specify a path for the 'audiodir' setting in the server settings, it is being replaced by the real pathname. In my setup, I have a symlink from '//music/m' to the real path, say '/bigdisk/m'. Since '/bigdisk/m' is exported as a Samba share '\\music\m', I can switch back and forth with my playlists under iTunes for Windows. The pathnames in my playlist could be '\\music\m\Abba\Gimme.mp3' and since Slimserver changes every '\' to '/', it comes out as '//music/m/Abba/Gimme.mp3' under my Linux Slimserver. This works out just fine. That is BEFORE 6.3.0. Now, '//music/m' is silently replaced by '/bigdisk/m' and thus, the first observation was that every title is doubled in my library (since the old pathnames are still there). You can see this if you enter the path into the settings and restart Slimserver afterwards. When you enter the settings page again, the pathname has been changed. This is a really BAD THING(tm). Slimserver should not try to be so smart. However, I have not yet found the place where this symlink chasing was introduced, else I would have corrected that myself. -- meyergru meyergru's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1980 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25506 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

In regard to the different appearance, without elaboration on that, I can't really answer that. If you restart the server after naming the file properly, it should appear in the server settings-plugins. If not, then something has gone wrong, which might be related to what is causing you to see a slightly different appearance. for more info about plugins, see here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerPlugins -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SB3 wireless signal strenght
I just recieved my wireless SB3. It does not connect to my wireless system as well as I was hoping for. I have an old 802.11b access point. The SB connects with fluctuating signal strength 6-30%, and there are many dropouts, so my flac files are more or less impossible to play. My laptop connects at a constant 90% signal strenght when located right next to the SB, so softsqueeze works flawlessly on flac files. Is the wireless connector so much worse than the one in my laptop, or could there be something wrong in my setup? Would it make a real difference to upgrade to a newer 802.11g system? Suggestions appreciated. See I have an alternate theory about what the poster is asking. :) It looks to me like he wants to stream his m4a files in wav format, but all he sees in Server Settings - File Types for apple formats is AIFF, FLAC, and MP3. So maybe the info he's looking for is this: AIFF is a basic PCM format, very very similar to WAV. The Squeezebox can decode AIFF just like it can WAV, so it shouldn't really make a difference that you can't select WAV. Maybe he's trying to stream to some device that only understands WAV though.
