I've had this problem as well. Enough so I've been exploring other radio
lists like shoutcast. It definitely happens on stations in my favorites
list to the point I've stopped using this feature. login, password etc.
all are correct but this makes no difference. I can go direct to live365
on my computer and the problem doesn't occur.

[slim] Re: Stop this Various Artists Madness !

2006-10-18 Thread ModelCitizen

I have to agree that the way that SlimServer 6.5.* handles folders is
painful. I've got a folder called 70s pop singles under a folder called
MP3 and a folder in the root of my drive also called 70s pop singles.
The reason for this is that I keep my (few) MP3s separate from my
Flacs. All the files in these two folders have the same album tag (70s
pop singles) yet Slimserver lists them as two albums (both called 70s
pop singles)... and there is no way round it.
I much preferred the arrangement as it was in 6.3.

Yes, I agree, it'd be good to have a switch allowing us to switch off
Slimserver's over-clever folder behaviour.

One other thing:
Shouldn't the Compilation tag have a value of 1, not Yes? (Or maybe
that's the same thing in some taggers).

As per post #1.

How to play the URL
1. Paste them into Tune and then save as a favorite
or
2. Install MyPicks plugin and create your own list

Since the URLs are WMA playable via Tune-in then you could also enter
them into your Squeezenet account.

You should upgrade to latest 6.5.1 as it has firmware upgrades handling
buffer depletion which I found happened a lot with these URLS.

The retransmit count is just indicative that something has happened that
interrupted network comms. It doesn't say which connection needed the
retransmits. It could be the result of interference, PC hanging (e.g.

else running.

I think you should enable Performance monitoring under Server

far as I remember, if you run a ls in linux underscore and other

like the most preferable way of sorting files in the Browse Music

No, it wont. The problem is with the SQL query which randommix
uses. Essentially:

SELECT * FROM tracks ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1

Behind the scenes this will fetch ALL the tracks, sort them
randomly, then return the first track in the list. I just tried the
query on my main server and it takes 8 seconds to complete
(70k ish tracks)..

There must be ways of speeding this up, at least for the
simple non-filtering random cases.

In fact, there seems to be a fair bit of discussion on the subject
of speeding this up down:

Just had a bit more of a play..

Ok, so the original query is this, and it takes over 8s:

SELECT me.id, me.url, me.content_type, me.title, me.titlesort,
me.titlesearch, me.album, me.tracknum, me.timestamp, me.filesize,
me.disc, me.thumb, me.remote, me.audio, me.audio_size,
me.audio_offset, me.year, me.secs, me.cover, me.vbr_scale, me.bitrate,
me.samplerate, me.samplesize, me.channels, me.block_alignment,
me.endian, me.bpm, me.tagversion, me.drm, me.moodlogic_id,
me.moodlogic_mixable, me.musicmagic_mixable, me.musicbrainz_id,
me.playcount, me.lastplayed, me.lossless, me.lyrics, me.rating,
me.replay_gain, me.replay_peak FROM tracks me
LEFT JOIN genre_track genreTracks ON ( genreTracks.track = me.id )
WHERE ( audio = '1' AND genreTracks.genre IN ( '21', '26', '17', '22',
'18', '30', '16', '23', '29', '25', '27', '28', '20', '24', '19', '31'
)
AND ( ( lastPlayed IS NULL ) OR ( lastPlayed '1161171000' ) ) )
ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1

If I strip out all the columns and just get it to sort the tracks id's
like this:

SELECT me.id FROM tracks me
LEFT JOIN genre_track genreTracks ON ( genreTracks.track = me.id )
WHERE ( audio = '1' AND genreTracks.genre IN ( '21', '26', '17', '22',
'18', '30', '16', '23', '29', '25', '27', '28', '20', '24', '19', '31'
)
AND ( ( lastPlayed IS NULL ) OR ( lastPlayed '1161171000' ) ) )
ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1

It now takes under a second, and you're left with the random track ID, which
should be all it needs..

Of course, the command is *sqlite3* and it is even included with SSODS.

/volume1/SSODS/bin/sqlite3 /volume1/SSODS/var/cache/.slimserversql.db

should open a console to the databse (i may be wrong with the path to
the database file above, i don't remember it..).

Then you can issue all usual SQL commands. See www.sqlite.org -
Documentation for a complete reference of SQL commands understood by
sqlite3.

You can also transfer the database file to another computer and use it
there. There are even ODBC and JDBC drivers for Sqlite! And there exist
some GUI tools, at least for windows. See sqlite.org.

flip

Edit: This single file _is_ the whole database. So just backup this
file. Or if you prefer ASCII, dump the database to a file, e.g. with:

echo .dump | sqlite3 databasefilename databasedump.sql

With some modifications (mainly quoting) this file can then be imported
into any other SQL database (postgresql, mysql etc.).

That's a really good question.

Removing the punctuation and special characters probably makes
_searching_ a bit more user-friendly, but I've never fully understood
why these characters were also removed for _sorting_ purposes.

In the database there are three distinct strings stored for all album
and track titles, genres, and artist names - an unaltered string, used
only for display purposes, a sort string, and a search string. From
what I can tell, the sort and search strings are identical in all cases
- each has been stripped of most punctuation characters and has been
capitalized.

Using ALBUMSORT, TITLESORT, NAMESORT tags can be quite powerful, and
for things like artist names, it's the ideal way to do things like
forcing a lastname/firstname ordering. But when those tags are not
present, I could certainly understand using something more closely
resembling the original, perhaps with punctuation not removed.

[slim] Re: SlimServer stopped suddenly while playing

2006-10-18 Thread maxlamont

It definitely is Kaspersky Internet Security. I checked and re-checked.
That is the cause.

I excluded everything, it still doesn't work. I assume SlimServer uses
some suspicious system files or whatever. You know, how crazy virus
scanners are these days.

Still: I paid for the Kaspersky and I am using my computer for business
purposes. So to have a pretty secure computer is more important to me
than a nice entertainment system. I am disappointed that SlimServer
doesn't work properly after an update. It's true what they say: Never
change a running system! Very sadly I did update and well, I am bummed
now.

So each time I reboot my system I will have to tell SlimServer to start
manually, it just won't do automatically anymore.

And in the future I won't use Kaspersky any more. It just sucks that
all our computers here have Kaspersky and that I am paying money to
those people and then they stop me from having fun with SlimServer.

Am I the only (unlucky) Kaspersky user out there?

[slim] Re: SlimServer stopped suddenly while playing

2006-10-18 Thread radish

So you have a few choices:

(a) Complain to these people you bought software from that it is
broken, that it is preventing other legitimate software on your system
from running. It's -their- responsibility to fix -their- bugs. As you
said, you paid them good money and - surely you're entitled to
something which works as advertised.

(b) Stop using it and switch to something else. I know for a fact that
McAffee works just fine with slimserver, as I'm sure do most virus
scanners.

(c) Move back to an earlier version of Slimserver which doesn't trigger
this issue.

Personally I'd do (a) and (b), but if you want to do (c) that's an
option too.

[slim] Is this the remote control solution Sean hinted at recently?

2006-10-18 Thread Kyle

Here's the link:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2653,CONTENTID=11828

This Logitech device already works with Itunes, Musicmatch and WMA.
Seems like it wouldn't be much of a stretch to incorporate Slimserver
support. It has a scroll wheel for navigation and an LCD screen on the
remote. $250 retail, but maybe a special Slim Devices version can be
sold for less. Logitech makes good products. Is this the remote
everyone has been waiting for?

[slim] to many directory tagging problem

2006-10-18 Thread cmaskelyne

There have been several issues reported with tags not being picked up
properly in the new version of slimserver.

With a fairly substantial library (43000 tracks) I was disappointed to
find that many of the tracks had disappeared to Web or MP3's which
were the subdirectories that I had assigned for my music.

Previously I know 6.3 was working so I reverted to that only to find
the same issue. Having worked my way through iTunes, Musicmatch and
Windows Media Player (all showing the correct tags) I decided to rever
to an even earlier version 6.0.1.

Despite removing all traces of slimserver the same problem occured.

In my desperation I remapped a H:\web\mp3's as Z:\MP3's (I tried) to
map it completely but you can't scan only a drive. Anyway so this meant
that I could see if the artists all changed from Web to MP3's however it
was even better than I expected - all tags were fine.

Next move is to move back through the upgrades and see if and when it
plays up. If you have this problem I suggest in the interim you move
the directory closer to the root or if this is not ideal share and map
the drive so you only have one sub-directory to your music. I will keep
you posted on whether this fixes the problem in later releases.

I guess if this does it probably needs to be fixed by someone but as a
casual user I am not sure how this works hopefully someone can pick
this up and see where the problem lies.

It has taken a couple of days but at last it seems like I am making
progress.

Still the best music steaming system out there even with these little
trials keep up the good work.

[slim] Logitech to acquire Slim Devices

2006-10-18 Thread seanadams

I am pleased to announce that Logitech is acquiring Slim Devices, and I
am glad to have the opportunity to share the news here in our forum
before the official press release goes out.

We have been building a relationship with Logitech for quite some time.
As we got to know their executive team, it became clear that there was a
compelling opportunity for us to work together to bring Slim Devices’
products to the mainstream market. As you may know, Logitech recently
launched the Wireless DJ music system, and also produces Harmony remote
controls, which many of our customers already use with their
Squeezeboxes.

This is an opportunity for us to introduce Squeezebox and Transporter
more quickly to a lot more people. Slim Devices will benefit from
Logitech’s brand, their retail channel, their expertise in developing
quality hardware, and their existing portfolio of complementary
products such as speakers and remotes. Logitech believes this will be a
fast growing segment of their business, and we are looking forward to
making that happen.

One of the most exciting things about this opportunity is Logitech’s
enthusiasm for our open development model, and the way we collaborate
as a community to improve our products. We plan to expand this model as
we continue to develop great new software and hardware. SlimServer will
continue to be available free of change under the GPL, and we will
participate in these forums in much the same way.

All of our employees have accepted new employment offers, and we will
remain in our Mountain View location. Dean, Patrick and I expect to
stay for the foreseeable future.

I’ll be here on the forums if you have any questions, and as always,
welcome your feedback and ideas.

Best regards,

Sean

Well I can't blame you from a business perspective, I'd do the same. I
guess most people here, including me, would be concerned that larger
company attitudes and needs to satisfy shareholders will result in
cost-cutting to equipment we've grown to know and love.

This applies most directly I would say to the Transporter, where a
great deal of the appeal lies in the concept of high-engineering ideals
and selective component control. Will it now start to be built in the
Far East and standards drop?

I suppose the burning question for me is how independant will the Slim

Let me introduce myself. My name is Junien Labrousse, Logitech SVP of
the Entertainment and Communication Business Unit.
The first thing I'll say is that we are very excited about the
opportunity that Slim Devices will bring to Logitech. This is
a great extension of our current business. Let me assure you that one
of the main reasons for this acquisition is the development
capabilities of the Slim Devices team. The technical level of this
group is a key asset that we fully intend to leverage. The Slim Devices
entity will function independently, keeping the spirit of advance audio
technology and strong product innovation.

Logitech will bring its global distribution and marketing capabilities,
providing a jump start to a large visibility and adoption of Slim
Devices products.

Transporter is selling well, and while it certainly carries a higher

Server network help - is on the main Slimserver Web page - bottom left
hand side.

When you select it - there will be a test for different data rates.
This is a short duration and will not be enough for your problem.
At the bottom of the dialogue there is the text Enable Performance
Monitoring - click this link to get the performance monitoring page.
You will now have a choice of Server Statistics or Player
Statistics.
Click Server Statistics - then reset the counter and play some music.
Then look at the graphs or post a copy of them.

SlimServer have to break out of the more tech-led user base it has so
far and develop a more consumer-friendly look and feel?

Open source development is unlikely to provide that as it tends to
build products that match the community's requirements, not the mass

now that it is to generate returns for anomymous major shareholders and

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-18 Thread autopilot

I can't blame you for doing this, but i too am very worried.

So please now please dispense with the vague PR speak, and please be as
up front and honest as you can - how is this actually going to work?

1) Will Logitech just own the company, with Slim Devices operating as a
separate entity? Or will the Slim Devices brand name be phased out and
the next model (SB4?) with a 'Logitech' device? i fear the latter. In
fact it pretty obvious really, in the long term anyway

2) Will Logitech leaving the Slim Devices team alone to carry on their
great work? After all, Logitech effort in this sector have been less
than amazing. Much Logitech software is a dog in my experience. The
setpoint crap was terrible last time i used it. Will Slim Server remain
open source? Be honest now, I Fear not in the long term. Please
don#8217;t lose sight of what made Slimserver so popular and won so
many people over.

I hope this is a positive move for us consumers. I am sure it will be
one for SD and Logitech (financially anyway). But the ethos of both
companies is so different #8230;

Logitech = Mass market, bang #8216;em out. Dumbed down and closed
systems

Slim Devices = Consumer centric, #8220;it#8217;s ready when
it#8217;s ready#8221; listening to the customer and responding in a
personal way, open source.

The response I got when I mouse was faulty was a totally different
experience to what I got when my SB3 screen failed. Are they REALLY
compatible in their current forms? Again, I doubt it.

Let not forget the edgy #8216;cool#8217; factor that the Slim Devices
products have. I#8217;m sorry, but Logitech just don#8217;t have that,
no matter how hard you pretend I will always associate Logitech with low
end PC speaker systems and horrible keyboards. Just assimilating Slim
Devices could be a disaster for the SB and it#8217;s fans.

This could be so right for Slim Devices, more money could mean even
better products. But Logitech is a large corp and I fear they just want
a cash cow like every other large corp.

Sorry for being so negative, but we have seen this before, no matter
how chipper the PR releases are.

I would say that the hardware, and the post setup user experience is
already very consumer-friendly.

Open source development is unlikely to provide that as it tends to
build products that match the community's requirements, not the mass
market's.

This is not necessarily the case. Positive leadership in areas such as
feature support and UI design can guide even the most raucous community
to a usable outcome. Firefox is a good example. Also consider that the
server is eminently skinnable, and would allow customizations for
divergent user classes.

You are also less likely to get support from that community
now that it is to generate returns for anomymous major shareholders and
not company founders.

But community work still supports the community of users. Add a new
feature then enjoy it yourself and enjoy the accolades of the other users.

I would assume therefore that more in-house design

SlimDevices is already doing the bulk of this in-house.

I'd actually like to see the server software get more consumer
friendly, I'd feel more comfortable recommending it to friends. I
wouldn't contribute freely to that myself though - Logitech are a rich

And when rich companies join forces with a visionary community good
things may come to be.

Sure, this sort of change is scary. But I'd rather remain hopeful and
work to keep the community going than to assume the worst and abandon
the effort.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-18 Thread radish

My immediate thoughts are to the purchase of Harmony by Logitech a while
ago. When I bought my first Harmony remote they were a small company
making innovative products which worked really well but which could
have used better industrial design, packaging and marketing. They even
had a kind of open-source aspect in that the DB of IR codes were user
submitted. I was pretty bummed when I heard they were bought by
Logitech, but the net outcome has been fairly positive. The products
look a _lot_ slicker, work generally just as well as before, and
they're a lot easier to get hold of now. I would say support has gone
downhill, and I too dislike any Logitech-supplied software I've ever
used (SetPoint - ugh!), but I'm still buying the remotes :)

IMHO Slim don't need help in the design department, but having
Logitech's marketing group behind them won't hurt. I am a little
concerned about support and general QC (my Harmony 880 STILL won't
charge properly because of a faulty cradle, and support are pretty
horrible to deal with) but we'll see.

My major concern is that the desire for people to pitch in and help
with the software will dry up as Logitech can surely afford to hire as
many devs as they need and everyone knows it. Slimserver wouldn't be
what it is now if it were a purely in-house product. But again, if
Logitech can find some way of keeping the small club feeling whilst
expanding the user base 10x, then maybe it'll all be OK.

I can say one thing though - any fancy schmancy remote they make better
work with my Transporter!

2006-10-18 Thread cmaskelyne

Right 6.5.1 nightly 18/10 does not fix this issue. Exactly the same
problem. Have tried it scanning the directory directly and using iTunes
- issue occurs on both.

Now having got it working fine under 6.0.1 (both scanning directly and
with iTunes) I am regressing back to 6.3.1 to see it the issue is there
as well.

More work needed I think. Will let you know when I have tried 6.3.1 if
this does not work the solution is to go back to 6.0.1 and do a clean
installation and then a clean update of all music.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-18 Thread seanadams

//I can't blame you for doing this, but i too am very worried.

When we first started down this road, I was worried too! However,
Logitech has an extremely good track record with the very few
acquisitions that they've done. I've been very impressed by the fact
that those companies have not only prospered, but maintained their
personality, their autonomy, and their key people.

// So please now please dispense with the vague PR speak, and please be
as up front and honest as you can - how is this actually going to work?
1) Will Logitech just own the company, with Slim Devices operating as a
separate entity?

Slim Devices will become a wholly-owned subsidiary.

//Or will the Slim Devices brand name be phased out and the next model
(SB4?) with a 'Logitech' device? i fear the latter. In fact it pretty
obvious really, in the long term anyway

We haven't nailed down all the naming specifics yet. However,
Logitech's brand is of enormous value to us, and it will appear on our
products as we get into their channels.

//2) Will Logitech leaving the Slim Devices team alone to carry on
their great work? After all, Logitech effort in this sector have been
less than amazing. Much Logitech software is a dog in my experience.
The setpoint crap was terrible last time i used it.

I would say that their hardware strengths complement our software
capabilities. The plan is to combine only the best aspects of both
companies.

//Will Slim Server remain open source? Be honest now, I Fear not in the
long term. Please don’t lose sight of what made Slimserver so popular
and won so many people over.

Absolutely. And furthermore, we will continue to lead its development.

// I hope this is a positive move for us consumers. I am sure it will
be one for SD and Logitech (financially anyway). But the ethos of both
companies is so different … Logitech = Mass market, bang ‘em out.
Dumbed down and closed systems Slim Devices = Consumer centric, “it’s
ready when it’s ready” listening to the customer and responding in a
personal way, open source.

We're actually not all _that_ different, but again this is a point
where we will complement each other, not a conflict.

// The response I got when I mouse was faulty was a totally different
experience to what I got when my SB3 screen failed. Are they REALLY
compatible in their current forms? Again, I doubt it.

Tech support will by handled by our team, as it is a completely
different animal than supporting a single-function device such a
mouse.

//Let not forget the edgy ‘cool’ factor that the Slim Devices products
have. I’m sorry, but Logitech just don’t have that, no matter how hard
you pretend I will always associate Logitech with low end PC speaker
systems and horrible keyboards. Just assimilating Slim Devices could be
a disaster for the SB and it’s fans.

Hmmm... personally I have been very happy with their keybaords and mice
for many years. I don't know if your position is widely held, but you
are cetainly entitled to it.

//This could be so right for Slim Devices, more money could mean
even better products. But Logitech is a large corp and I fear they just
want a cash cow like every other large corp.

I think their track record with previous acquisitions demonstrates that
they know how to invest appropriately to grow new divisions quickly. We
are really looking forward to being able to expand our engineering
team.

//Sorry for being so negative, but we have seen this before, no matter
how chipper the PR releases are.

It's quite alright. You've made some great points, and they are concerns
that we all raised very early in our discussions with Logitech.
Personally, I am feeling very good about this, but I've had a lot longer
to get to know their people.

So I bought a Harmony remote and Logitech bought Harmony. Then I buy a

this weekend - let's see Logitech buy Yard Machines.

...and it would fit nicely into the product line, rebranded as a
floppy, paper, disk shredder.

Well i don´t see a problem in general but can´t imagine going to my
fellow telling him: Hey, i heard a Logitech audiobox that sounds
 better than your Naim
I bet he will recommend me the best doctor he knows :)

Indeed, does Logitech do niche products? And how are you going to get
the audiophilie community, that you are after with the transporter, to
get over the 'Logitech' name? Can the logitech brand become synonymous
with high/quality end audio/HiFi kit? I hope you can, but it will be a
very steep climb indeed.
