[slim] Re: Unicode troubles

2005-12-05 Thread aix

Thanks for the suggestion.

To make things more manageable, I am focussing in on one album. All
files in the album are in the same format, and all tags are ID3v2.
There are no ID3v1 tags. Character encoding, both in file names and
tags, appears to be consistent. All files contain album, artist and
song title tags.

Yet some of the song titles are displayed as gibberish in the Web GUI
(most songs look OK). When I do a full rescan of the library, album
title alternates between correct Cyrillic text and gibberish.

I would appreciate any suggestions for troubleshooting this particular
album as it might shed some light on what's going on in the rest of the
library.

That's where the bug was. It would only pick up on songs that
"displayed" on the screen, and not all the songs in the folder. You
had to scan through the list of songs to make sure they all got written
to the db.

Thanks all... Odd process, use the web interface to tune in, then the
remote interface to add to favorites.

I'm surprised that with all the focus on streaming radio this ability
isn't built into the server and manageable through the web interface.
IIRC, you can do this in SqueezeNetwork but if you're running a local
server then using SqueezeNetwork for anything at all is just a pain in
the butt.

I think you do it via Slim Server. If you go to the web interface, on
the left side there is a link for RADIO - click on "Radio Tune In". On
the resulting page you can input a URL for the radio station. I've just
tried it with the Australian station Triple J
http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u

It looks like you need to save the resulting playlist and then play the
radio station from your playlists. I have just done this & it works. I
don't know if there is a way to make it show up under the Internet
Radio menu on the SB.

[edit] Hmm, seems I was too slow. Presumably you make it a favourite by
creating a playlist and then adding that to favourites.

Try "Radio Tune-in" from the home page, or the pulldown in Fishbone skin

I expect you can add it to favourites once it is playing, by navigating

Harder way (which I do use sometimes... don't ask why..) is to make a

One thing that perhaps hasn't been stated: The web interface should be
extended with the multi-level browse command as we defined it for the

searching all the browsable fields.

Your way of using iTunes seems different than mine. I use the Composer
attribute and sort tracks on it, select subsets withe the Browser window
and now I'm using the Grouping attribute to associate tracks that make
up a work. I hardly ever use the Search function.

OK, two different assumptions at work here.

(1) other tags not the same for all tracks with the same album value
... agreed, this is not a problem. I think we have established some
good examples (songs) where you can have an album where one of the tags
(certainly performer, possibly genre) might vary from one track to
another.

(2) the assumption I think we should enforce for classical music...
that "album" is set consistently for a Piece (eg Symphony).

I use iTunes, and Foobar, and MusicMagicMixer, as well as Slimserver,
Softsqueeze and Squeezeboxes. And if you want to play, say, a Symphony
in iTunes then by far the easiest option is to search by Artist and then
Album. I really do not want to be fiddling with sets of tracks to make
up the Symphony, or to be selecting ones from a CD. This is why I
think "Album" is so important - it comes naturally not just to
Slimserver in its current state, but also to other players as well.

Fortunately I don't think this needs distract us too much - I think
we've nearly agreed on what will work, and it should be a strength
rather than a weakness that the scheme can be used in more than one
way.

Unfortunately its my bedtime now (I don't know which time zone you're
in!) so I need to sign off. If you feel like writing up a new version
of the enhancement request I posted, please do!

Regards

I have been using iTunes, Foobar and MusikCube on a daily basis for
some time and see NO evidence that they work on this assumption. Each
of these players displays a list of tracks in rows with tag values in
columns. I select tracks and perform some operation on them. It works
fine when the other tags are noit the same for all the tracks with the
same album value.

Yes, I used Artist loosely. There are double concerti, and violin
sonatas usually involve a piano player too. And operas and choral works
will have more than one singer. I was referring to a practical need.

[slim] Re: please confirm: bridging does not make SB3 an access point

2005-12-05 Thread mawfin

Sorry, I had a little poke around but could not find the previous
reference on this topic.

The ideal setup I have in mind for my father-in-law (non computer
literate) is:

- Slimserver running on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS.

- The first SB3 connects to Slimserver by ethernet.

- The second (and possibly third) SB3 connects to Slimserver wirelessly
through the first SB3.

By removing both the wireless router and the PC I solve my two big
problems:

- My experiments have killed the hard drive and other elements of his 5
year old PC (running Windows Millenium Edition).

- His Belkin modem (18 months old) refuses to allow connection with the
SB3 (no firmware update available). I have given up on this.

Apart from that I think it's just a neat idea.

Any pointers in the right direction?

Trust me, I'm not holding back on a recommendation for a (nearly)
perfect tagger - I really don't know of one! Mp3tag isn't too bad for
fixing problems even with the non-preferred tags like "Composer" - you
can select an entire directory of files (or several, joined together
temporarily), and check or fix the value of the Composer (or any other)
tag.

But its still fiddly, I agree, so if you find something better be sure
to let me know!

Well, my usual situation is that I know what I want but it takes way
too lomng to get there with the SB and remote.

Multiple classical music genres will help me but I'll still be left
with 100 plus Beethoven symphony performances, 100 plus Mozart
Concerti, 150 plus Haydn Symphonies or 70 plus Haydn string quartets
when I get to the stage where I'm browsing albums.

> (3) Tag program recommendation - see the
> BeginnersGuideToTagging!

I looked at all three programs recommended. I understand that
Composer, Conductor, etc. aren't useful right now but if the browsing
facilities in SS are extended, they will be useful.

mp3Tag - doesn't display Composer or Conductor in the main list or
those properties in te left pane. It does show all the tags if you
click on View/Tags. Hard to use it tofix problems though.

Tag&Rename - supports coomposer, conductor and orchestra as far as I
can tell. For some reason, composer isn't listed as one of the %n
values you can use for file <-> tag operations.

Godfather - seems to support composer but not conductor or orchestra.

I think recommending a tagging program that supports all the tags we
want to browse is important. That's why I raised the issue.

yes, it looks as though we will soon be sorted, all we need is
agreement for someone to code it for us! Pressing on with the
remaining issues:

Can we then agree on the simple solution? i.e. we suggest that the

This is exactly what I was thinking of. Have the "And Browse..." items
at the top of the list, so you come to them first. Have the currently
matching Albums (or tracks) below, so you can scroll into them if you
wish. Top line of the display gives a clue as to how many there are,
eg: "Browsing Beethoven / Karajan (57)"

I'm going to disagree here... I think we have to state the asusmption
that the music has been tagged correctly, which I take to mean with one
Album per Piece (NOT CD). So the examples you've given would all be
different Albums in my book. Apart from anything else, ALL other
computer music players work on an assumption that the basic collection
of tracks is an Album, so if you want to play this music on any other
player, you are going to want it tagged this way. I for one really
don't want differently tagged music for different players (and I really
do use several).

Here I'll agree, this is similar to the example I gave. This should be
tagged with Album = "Gershwin Songbook xx", track titles = song names,
and "Performer" = singer for each track. The only dilemma here is how
you use "Artist": the Vorbis standard implies this is meant to be a
summary of the other information for players with limited display
capbilities, ie you're supposed to choose the "most important" summary.
In this example I'd probably go for "Gershwin" rather than the song
singer, but I suspect this can remain a personal choice and doesn't
need to be enforced in a standard.

Careful. "Artist", in the Vorbis standard, should only appear once. You
can have multiple Performers, though.

And, as per my note above, all tags are not equal. "Album" and "Artist"
have special meaning for most players, and to retain any kind of
compatibility we have to respect that.

show the reduced data set as you go...

There is a distinction here between the web interface and the SB/remote
interface. On a webpage, we can show the number of albums, artists,
tracks that match. And you might as well display some values on the
web page. On the SB display, you can't show much and scrolling takes
more time than does scanning down the web page.

How about incorporating the number of matches into the menu choices:

Browse again for 6 Albums
Browse again for 75 Songs (Tracks)
Browse Again for 3 Conductors
...

With this feedback, you can see how the search is going at each stage
and pick the best next step. If you want to tack a list of matching
albums on after the browse choices, OK.

For the web interface, I think displaying a list of Albums (or Tracks
if you have narrowed it to one Album) is reasonable.

> Agreed that if you ever select an album on your list, it

Good. Allowing the user to browse tracks at any stage gives him a way
to choose whether to end with an album or a track.

Well, the SS does this logic for Browses now. I makes sense and it is
consistent with what's being done now. I think you are building up the
role of the Album in a way that is not necessary.

It is fairly common for the tags to be different for tracks on one
classical CD. I recommended a Sony CD recently with an excellent
performance of Beethoven's 4th symphony by Bruno Walter and an
excellent performance of Beethoven's 8th symphony by George Szell. And
it is common for a CD to have a concerto and a sonata. Same soloist
but no conductor and orchestra for the sonata. Sometimes a CD has a
symphony and a concerto. Sometimes a Cd has several symphonies or
concerti with different composers, conductors, soloists and
orchestras.

You might be careful to creat a different album name for each work but
not everyone knows to do that or will make the effort. It isn't a safe
assumption for SS to make.

Outside classical music, there are lots of Songbook CDs where the
greatest hits of a composer like Gershwin, Porter or Berlin (or someone
who is not yet dead) are song by various artists. You would want to
keep the same album name for all tracks because you want to be able to
find and play all the songs from the album. Maybe you could use the
composer, but the name of the songbook is the natural way to do it.

SS does rely on the album name as a way to group tracks and collect
properties. And you have gone farther in building a conceptual model.
I think that extending the browse facilities in SS will go better if you
don't organize browsing around your concept of an album. If you browse
tags in a uniform way for all (browsable) tags, you get a better
interface and one that handles things like tag values that are not the
same for every track in an album. And it can better handle tracks with
multiple values for a tag such as Artist.

> So, yes, present the same list of searchable tags each time.

Showing the number of Albums, etc. left to browse would help the user
get to the end and stop

Re: [slim] Undocumented options?

2005-12-05 Thread Mark Lanctot
Two undocumented options that may help in your
situation:

1. Press and hold ADD on the remote after
power-cycling the unit (unplugging, replugging) to
reset to factory defaults.

2. Press and hold 1 on the remote after
power-cycling to rewrite the firmware.

Also I find when I'm having wireless problems I go
back to basics and work step-by-step.

1. Disable encryption and make sure SSID and DHCP
are enabled. Try to connect. If you can't, you
have fundamental wireless or network issues. Look
at router firmware or signal strength/interference.

2. Disable DHCP and assign a static IP if that's
how you run your network.

3. Enable WPA with a very simple passphrase.

4. Enable WPA with your standard passphrase.

5. Try disabling SSID broadcast if that's how you
run your network. I was once able to connect with
disabled SSID by enabling SSID, finding the
network, then disabling SSID. This no longer
works for me now, but no big deal.

This resets the squeezebox, but many features are handled by slimserver

restart the server to go back to default prefs. If you use the linux

once you have opened the db, click on the "browse data" tab at the top.
Then select "tracks" from the pulldown list for Table.
At the far right, last column, you will find "multialbumsortkey". This
is the info that is used for sorting when you are browsing with the
group albums pref to keep multi-albums together as one. Otherwise,
sorting is strictly by track number. Using Browse Music Folder, all

I'm sure this needs to be a separate browsable tag. That would allow
you to browse (or search from the web page) for a case where
performer=x AND conductor=y AND ensemble=z, for example.

I think just the browsable tags, but wouldn't want to defend this
choice on the barricades. I was looking for simplicity.

I can see that the scheme gives more flexibility, though I was hoping
to keep it simple (to code and to use!) and I'm not sure this buys a
lot. Given a capability to browse on Composer/conductor/band, I'd have
thought you could drop the functionality to merge these tags with
"artist", though backwards compatibility is of course a good thing.

Yes. I did give this quite a lot of thought. If you are narrowing down
your selection I think it is critical to show the reduced data set as
you go... otherwise its far too easy to end up specifying a combination
with no matches, and then you're not sure where you went wrong.
Similarly if you are applying selection criteria and get to a point
where you have, say 3 or 4 items on your list, you might as well just
scroll and select.

Agreed that if you ever select an album on your list, it must be time
to drop into the tracks.

OK, this is definitely more complex than I was thinking of but I think
I can see where you are going.

This note has reminded me of an unstated assumption that we should
check. Is is safe to assume that all of the tracks within a single
album will always have the same tags?

In my collection I have ensured that this is ALWAYS the case, because I
can foresee some nasty sideeffects were it to be otherwise. It would
certainly simplify things here if we could assume it. So far I've
thought of just one case where this might realistically occur - you
have an album of short songs (not long enought to be tagged as Albums
in their own right) with different singers. Does this browser need to
take this into account?

>
> Even if the user has already browsed on a tag, he might want to do it
> again. (If Artist contains both Composers and performers and
> conductors and bands.) Why not present the same list of browsable tags
> at each stage?

No particular reason, again I thought it would be simpler. Actually
the best reason I can think of for allowing a selection from a given
tag type more than once is that some of these may well legitimately
have multiple values for a single album/track. For example, a piece
with multiple PERFORMERs, or with multiple GENREs. So, yes, present
the same list of searchable tags each time. The coding might well have
to impose a limit on the number of levels of search you can do, though.

Ceejay

By Windows Shortcuts I mean .lnk files - which point to another directory.

Often, they are accidentially set to point to a directory higher in the tree

These shortcuts cause scanning problems if they

You may think you don't have any, but the Windows

You can find them by sorting files by type.

> (2) Allow "Ensemble" and "orchestra" as equivalent to "Band"

I'd be OK with doing this automatically or by a checkbox on the setup
page for (4). See below.

> (3) Expand the Advanced Search function in the Web interface

The menu of search fields on the SB should be based on the list of
Browsable tags from (2). Should the advanced search page include just
the Browsable tags from (2) or all the tags SS stores in the Database?

> (4) Allow browsing by additional tags (eg Conductor)

If the user checks for browsing on Composer or conductor, should that
contributor still be added to the artist tag values for an artist
browse? I'd put a second level checkbox under artist and band.

 Sample setup page (default)

Browse on these tags

(X) Album
(X) Artist
( ) combine Composer tag with Artist
( ) combine Conductor tag with Artist
( ) combine Band with tag Artist

(X) Song Title (track title)
( ) Composer
( ) Conductor
( ) Band (this tag may contain an orchestra
or ensemble name)

( ) combine Ensemble tag with Band
( ) combine Orchestra tag with Band

You may alo browse on multiple tags successively to narrow
the list of albums or tracks that fit your criteria.

( ) add multi-level Browse to main menu

 end sample page

> (5) Add new multi-level browsing capability

With the current browse artist, album and genre methods, you get to a
list of albums. If you select one album from the list, you get a list
of tracks. The description in the enhancement request text file says
that after you select a value for the browse list, SS will present a
list of tags that can be browsed next and a list of albums that meet
the tag criteria already selected. At some point, you may need to
display tracks rather than albums.

I'm not clear why Ceejay wants a list of albums to be displayed at each
stage of the multi-level browse. I did a few experiments with
Softsqueeze.

- If I use Browse Album, I get a list of albums after I select an
Artist value and the choice "All Songs" is added to the list. If I
select an album, I get the tracks that match the the Album I selected.
If the Album name was not unique, I get all those tracks with the Album
value I previously specified. They may come from several CDs.

- If I use Browse Artist, I get a list of albums after I select an
Artist value and the choice "All Albums" is added to the list. If I
select an album, I get the tracks that match the Artist and the Album I
selected. If the Album name was not unique, I get only those tracks
with the Artist value I previously specified. I I press play when the
Album name is displayed, only those tracks that meet the selection
criteria are queued up.

- If I use Browse Genre, I get a list of Artists after I select a
Genre. If I select an Artist value, I get a list of Album values and
the choice "All Albums" is added to the list. If I select an album, I
get the tracks that match the Genre and the Album I selected. If my
Album name is not unique, I get all the tracks with that Album

- If I use "Browse Year", I get a list of Album values and the "All
Songs" choice is added to the list. If I select an album, I get the
tracks that match the Artist and the Album I selected. If the Album
name was not unique, I get only those tracks with the Artist value I
previously specified.

Ceejay suggested that the multi-level browse should display a list of
Albums after each Browse step. That isn't consistent with the way SS
works now and I don't know that it fits for all stages for all previous
selections. However, I'll propose a way to do what Ceejay wants.

A suggestion: After the user browses on one tag, display the list of
browsable tags. If the user has already browsed the Album tag and
selected one Album value, display the track titles that match the
previously selected tag values. If the user has not yet browsed the
Album tag, display the distinct album values for tracks that match the
previously selected tag values.

The user should be able to press the "Play" or "Add" buttons to play
the displayed Track or Album. However, the selections the user has
already made may eliminate some tracks because they don't have the
right tag values. That is how "Browse Artist" works now. That is how
I think the multi-level browse should work.

---
The enhancement request text file calls it "Multi-mode browsing" which
does not convey the sense that you can browse on some tag to narrow the
list, then browse the list again with a different attribute to narrow
the list further.

---
Even if the user has already browsed on a tag, he might want to do it
again. (If Artist contains both Composers and performers and
conductors and bands.) Why not present the same list of browsable tags
at each stage?

Well, I'm not sure it "has to". And in fact, on many configurations, it
doesn't. I have 8500 tunes and it takes half an hour for me to rescan
them all. Mind you, I still think that's 25 minutes too long, but the
point is, no one seems to really understand why some people have scan
times that are an order of magnitude longer than others.

There also seems to be a bug in 6 where it's supposed to find small
changes without doing an entire rescan, but it doesn't seem to work
right.

I've had my sb for a year now and I've got a lot of sympathy when the
guy says the rescan needs attention. I've never got the hang of it
(and yes my mp3 tags are fine). Add a few tracks ask for a rescan and
nothing happens - ever. What had to be done before was clear the
cache, now clear library and start again just for adding a few tracks.
In my experience that can take 5-6 hours. Even harder is just changing
an mp3 tag then you've got to move the track to another part of the
drive, change the tag then move it back and rescan as above. I've seen
other guys with itunes to a rescan in 10 seconds. Why does slim have to
thrash away for hours?

[slim] Squeezebox3 - Complete FREAKOUT & stereo damage warning

2005-12-05 Thread Free Lunch
So I've had a pair of new sb3's since Friday. The idea is to replace
my very early slimp3. The hope is that 6.X will work well with the new
hardware (it has never worked well with my slimp3, so I have stayed on
5.4.1).

The sb3 has been playing almost constantly since Friday. Today, I was
eating lunch with the sb3 playing at a low volume.. Suddenly, massive
ear splitting static from my hifi. The sort that sends your lunch to
the floor while you make a frantic effort to mute the pre-amp. The
noise was traced to the analog rca outputs of the sb3.

The static occurred with every track I played.. I began a network
traffic capture and I placed an urgent call to slim support with the
hope of isolating this 'show stopper'.

Basically, support reported that this problem has been observed twice
before. The Xilinix chip 'somehow' gets corrupted during a firmware
update, causing sample rate problems on the DAC. I was asked to
re-program the chip (very simple, just a power cycle of the sb3 while
holding '1' on the remote). That seems to have cleared the problem
for now. Not sure why the problem did not occur sooner. The firmware
was upgraded when I first powered on the unit Friday. Never had
anything like this happen during years of using a slimp3. Perhaps
there should be more self-integrity checking?

I have been shopping for some new amps and plan on putting the other
sb3 into a new listening room. I have been considering directly
attaching the sb3 to the amps. This experience reinforces what my gut
was saying all along, basically "Attaching a squeezebox directly to an
amp? Are you f'n nutz??!!". Yeah, imagine a pair of 250 watt
monoblock tube amps sending max volume static and distortion to your
speakers..

Things were going quite well up until this point. Unfortunately, I
cannot say that this was the smooth intro to the 'latest & greatest'
product versions that I was hoping for. But, hey, the new case looks
really.. uh.. big.. and new.. Still haven't decided whether to send
them back during the eval period.

[slim] Re: Problem, Can't open File

2005-12-05 Thread dwc

Scott,
It's a known (and fixed) issue that might not be fixed in the version
of Slimserver you are running.

What happens is some tracks are not written to the DB, and thus SS ends
up not being able to play them. Once a directory gets messed up like
this, only a rescan will clean it up.

The workaround: From now on, to make sure all the new tracks get
written to the DB properly, just be sure to scroll through the entire
track listing once on a newly added folder before hitting "play".
(i.e. hit down arrow until you come back to the first track again.)

Scolling though each track writes that track's info to the db. You can
confirm by "searching" for the new tracks or album. Once it's in the DB
it will show up in a search.

[slim] SB3 & Netgear WGT624 Wireless 11b/11g/108 router

2005-12-05 Thread stand4you2

I have a Netgear WGT624 V2 wireless router updated with the latest
release firmware (4.2.10).

There are several other devices/computers on the network with network
interfaces made by various manufacturers. Each is able to connect to
the router when set to "auto" mode EXCEPT THE SB3.

I spent a full day isolating every computer and trying various
settings. The result?

11g connects at 11g
11b connects at 11b
108 connects at 108
EXCEPT the SB3, which simply cannot establish a connection whent the
router is set to auto.

The temporary solution is to set the router to 11g/11b instead of auto,
but this completely disallows 108 users taking advantage of their
hardware when the Squeezebox is not on.

I do not see this as a "proprietary standards" issue because all other
vendor NICs are able to make conntections in auto mode at 11b or 11g.

Any ideas out there?

Also, has anyone had any success using the SB3 with EONSTREAMS? If so,
how was success achieved?

Thanks!

The library is a mix of WAV and MP3 files. WAVs have no tags; MP3s have
a mix of IDv1 and IDv2 tags.

One interesting case is an album that is mostly OK, but parts of which
are displayed in a wrong character encoding. When examining the files
on disk, there is no obvious reasons for why this would happen. All
files are named consistently and all MP3 tags are identical in terms of
format and encoding.

My first step would be to convert all your tags to ID3v2.4 and remove the ID3v1
tags.

One of the things that AMX does is whole house audio. The SlimServer module
that I wrote (up on SourceForge) would drive this just fine with minimal
additions.

Here's the link:

and here are some screenshots:

This is obviously a much richer interface than keypads (album art and all),
full two-way feedback, etc. You can use a variety of solutions at a variety
of price points.

2. All of the mfgr's I have seen use keypads for each room to

solution that works together with the Squeezebox?
3. I use Homeseer in my home automation setup (not for the squeezebox
yet, but I do have HomeSeer sending/receiving IR). One thought I had
was to use web tablets or PDA's in each room to browse to HomeSeer (web
server in my house) and serve up a custom page that allows me to select
a room and a music source(Squeezebox1, Squeezebox2,etc.). I could then
use the selected Squeezebox's web interface to play music. Probably not
as monkeyproof as a keypad setup.

Solution #3 would require more work on my end and I want to make sure I
don't re-invent the wheel.

Thanks,

Fred

I'm using the M1-ATX DC-DC power supply, which takes switched and
unswitched DC (from car) and outputs 12V and 5V regulated. It
supposedly keeps the output correct over engine starts.

Here's an interesting twist though: after I removed the original SB2

[slim] 30-character field limitation?

2005-12-05 Thread Mark Lanctot
Hi:

I have some techno remixes with really long
names...for example:

Song Name (Artist A, Artist B & Artist C
Boomtastic Jungle Safari Remix) ;-)

SlimServer 6.2.1 truncates the names at a
30-character limit.

I also have songs by several artists with long names:

Artist A, Artist B & Artist C

Those get truncated at 30 characters as well.

You'd think this was an ID3v1 limitation
(30-character limit) but the tags are all
ID3v2.3.0, so there should be no limit in the tags
themselves. The limit seems to be in SlimServer.
I changed to ID3v2.3.0 quite a while ago and
rescanned from scratch dozens of times since.

Am I alone in this problem? It's cosmetic, but it
looks like crap on the nice big bright SB2 screen,
scrolling across the screen truncated like that.
It's not the SB2 display, the truncation is the
same in the SlimServer web pages as well.

Classical music listeners must see the same thing?

Re: [slim] Track order & naming problem - 6.2.2

2005-12-05 Thread Mark Lanctot
Have you looked at the files with a thorough tag
checker? Sounds like you have some file tags that
you can't see/edit but that SS can see.

Mp3tag could probably see them, but you'd have to
know what you're looking for. I find that foobar
seems to find all the tags.

Once you know what you're looking for (i.e. is it
in a "COMMENT" field? a "TRACK" field?), you can
then get Mp3tag to find and delete it.

Also, you may want to settle on one tagging
system. ID3v2 only seems to work for me. When I
have both ID3v1 and ID3v2, Mp3tag often does not
agree with SlimServer or foobar. It's easy to get
Mp3tag to delete everything but one tag set.

[slim] Re: Using Composer / Conductor / Band tags effectively

2005-12-05 Thread ceejay

Hello again Bill and anyone else who's following this debate...

Attached is an attempt at specifying a set of enhancement requests.
I've broken it down into a series of bite-sized chunks (though the last
one is a bit bigger than the others).

The idea is to make substantial improvement for classical users without
breaking too much of the current technology. Note that we could
certainly go a lot further, but I figured that incremental is good.

The separate requests are:
(1) Add "Performer" contributor type
(2) Allow "Ensemble" and "orchestra" as equivalent to "Band"
(3) Expand the Advanced Search function in the Web interface
(4) Allow browsing by additional tags (eg Conductor)
(5) Add new multi-level browsing capability

I think I've incorporated just about everything of my and Bill's ideas,
with just a couple of notes:

- I don't think we need the web page to construct a custom browse
pattern if we have a fully flexible browse function

- I've left out the idea of a new "Work" tag for the moment, although I
can certainly see how it might be handy. Trouble is, it doesn't seem to
be in general use anywhere?

Debate and new versions most welcome. Note in particular that
Multi-Level Browsing should be of interest not just to Classical
users!

When we have some consensus I would hope can post this as an official
enhancement request.

Regards
Ceejay

It must be something to do with your power supply then. Cars have REALLY
noisy power esecially at startup.

You might try putting a much larger cap, say 2200 to 3300uF across the
DC input, or try a different PS.

What power supply are you using?

[slim] Track order & naming problem - 6.2.2

2005-12-05 Thread DrNic

Using the nightly from 4/12/05:
MP3 tracks (from compilation album) imported via iTunes, with
compilation tag set.
Tracks named by iTunes as 1-01, 1-02 etc (disc 1) and 2-01, 2-02 etc
(disc 2).
Found that the tracks were listed in SS by artist order alphabetically.
Edited tags for track numbers to simple 1, 2, 3, etc. Renamed track
files to reflect this. Told SS to NOT use iTunes. Deleted db file.
Rescanned everything.
Tracks still appear with name 1-01 Blah Blah, ordered by artist
alphabetically!!
Where is SS getting the old name from, as file names _and_ tags have
been changed? Interestingly turning on "use iTunes" gives the tracks
the right order (but still remain named 1-01, 1-02 etc)

Using Win XP2, P4 3.2 gig, 1 gig ram.

Any thoughts?

Thanks KDF.
I have noticed that regardless of multi-disc setting, or compilation
setting, these files are being sorted according to artist
alphabetically (they are compilation discs so have many different
artists - reminder!). I have changed the track numbers to simple 1, 2,
3 etc and this hasn't made a difference.
You say I can check the database, can you please humour me and tell me
how I do that?! Where is the file I need to check and can I open it

Thanks for your help.

I believe it is keeping the server files unswapped. There is a setting
in Performance (Keep unswapped interval) that is set as default to 30
minutes. Could this be your culprit? Try changing the value and seeing
if it correlates...

That's because the sort order is essentially the order of items on

also find it confusing that Radio 2 A-Z and Radio 2 Listen Again are
very different, and program sometimes show in one but not the other.

It moves to that number in the list, but as we've seen the list order

Unfortunately the official recommended tag list isn't available just at
the moment, but I have seen reference to a "TITLE" tag in this context,
could be "Symphony 9". Wedging it into the contributor table is, as
you say, ugly. The neatest way would be to add this into a table as a
separate column, but this is now a database redesign (and the owners of
the DB schema are understandably reluctant to shove new data in for
every possible requirement). Maybe this could be a separate
enhancement request for a later date. [Edit: whoops! Silly mistake -
"title" is of course the track title, we can't reuse that...]

Or, if we are getting really fancy, SEVERAL Genre boxes in an AND or OR
configuration! EG "Romantic" and ("Concerto" or "Chamber"). But maybe
thats going a bit far... The current Advanced Search web page gives a
dropdown list populated with all the Genre values that have been found
in the database, thats a pretty good start.

Yes. See my notes on multiple genres. We'd need "genre" to be
included in the extended browsing functionality that we have been
debating.

[slim] Re: Using Composer / Conductor / Band tags effectively

2005-12-05 Thread Listener

Ceejay> (1) What tags do we want to search on (in addition to
> Artist/Album/Track which are givens)?

I didn't answer this earlier.

- I need a tag with just the name of the short Work name (For example,
"Symphony 3").

- I need a tag that can describe the type of work (symphony, concerto,
string quartet, chamber music) so that I can split of the works by one
composer. Can I use Genre for this purpose?

- I can mostly live using the Artist tag for a concatenation of
soloist/conductor/orchestra. So I could live without conductor, soloist
and band tags but I'd use them if they were present. In the long run, it
would be quite useful to have those tags and perhaps Lyracist to
document what's in the library. Once I put the CDs into storage, I'll
be relying on the information in the database to tell me what's in the
library.

I found an interesting table comparing tag use by different standards
and formats at

http://tinyurl.com/bkr5m

I notice that iTunes supprts a tag they describe as Grouping. Would
this be a useful tag for a short Work name (For example, "Symphony
3")?

Pat> But setting up a proper library for non-pop is a
Pat> non-trivial effort.

I've been struggling to see how to make a usable solution given the
current functionality of SlimServer/SB. How do you use tags? Do you
use the SB display and the remote to select music or a PDA or a
Laptop?

Pat> It isn't going to be fixed with a new table and five
Pat> new Sql statements.

I think that getting beyond the limits of the current browse methods
would help a lot.

I'd be interested to hear your shopping list of things that need to be
changed/added or just figured out to provide really good support for
classical music.

Pat> And there are philosophical questions to answer:
Pat> what is a band?

There may be more than one way to skin the cat. Does SS/SB require
that files be tagged in a particular way or can it adapt and/or be
configured to use a mixed library.

Right now, I need to understand one way to skin the whole cat.

[slim] Re: BBC Streams

2005-12-05 Thread lostboy

As far as I can tell the order is presented exactly as it comes off the
BBC website. The Radio 4 listen again and A to Z lists are certainly
too long to scroll through quickly. The remote buttons are treated as
numbers and you can therefore select the number of the entry in the
playlist you want, e.g. if you go to Radio 4 listen again and then hit
'1', '2', '3' in quick succession the entry shown will be number 123 in
the playlist (set the SB to display two lines and this will show the
position in the playlist).

It's not too intuitive, but quite easy to use once you understand
what's happening. I use a sort of manual binary cut approach to jump
about the list by number until I'm in the right area and then scroll up
or down to get the right programme.

Using the remote buttons to pass a letter and jump to this place in the
playlist would be a 'nice to have' enhancement. However, I think the
work done to keep this really useful plugin operating as Slimserver
moves forward, deal with the garbled radio 4 streams, etc. is clearly
the best pay off of results vs effort from the AlienBBC team. Many
thanks to all those involved for a core part of my Squeezebox
experience.

[slim] Re: ANNOUNCE: New Beginners Guide in Wiki

2005-12-05 Thread ceejay

Hi Bill, glad you like the improvements.

Just a couple of points:

(1) I'm rather sceptical about the use of Browse Music Folder as a
mechanism for finding music. I do use it myself occasionally, when I
know exactly what I want, or when I want to play a whole CD. But the
use you've described has some drawbacks:

- you're not making any use at all of the tagging information.

- it feels relatively hard to change (you have to use a file manager to
make changes)

- you've just lost the ability to play back a whole CD, which was one
of your original requirements!

- you've made it very hard to make mass changes to a "tag" (which has
now become a directory name)

I think this will lead you to a fragmented file system, not at all what
you want for 1000 CDs.

(2) Scaling - ok, my classical collection isn't nearly as big as yours,
about 250 CDs so far, but I'm not seeing any signs of scaling problems
in usability. If I know what I want (a particular symphony) I can go
straight to the various choices and pick one. If I don't know what I
want, I can browse in various ways (admittedly not conductor or band
yet!!). I find I use the browse by Genre a lot, especially now I've
carefully set up multiple genres on all my classical music.

(3) Tag program recommendation - see the BeginnersGuideToTagging!
Personally I use mp3tag, it is good at making bulk changes to groups of
tags. Its not ideal in the Genre field and just a little fiddly for the
"extras" (like conductor). I'm still waiting for someone to point out
something better. Finding tag errors is usually just a question of
looking at the lists (of artists or albums), the discrepancies normally
leap off the (web) page.

Ceejay.
