Re: [slim] FF REW improvements w/ Duet and SC7

With SC7 coming out and some new hardware, will the fast-forward and
rewind capability be better than SlimServer 6.5?
I hope not - SC7 FF/REW is near-perfect already in SC7 for me.

What issues do you have with SS6.5 fast-forwarding?

Is this the improvements that were suggested in the beta forum, whereby it

[slim] Wireless network improvements DD-WRT

2008-01-09 Thread Gibbo

Hi all,

I've not been getting great signal around the house for my SB's, I
purchased a set of high gain antenna
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-High-Gain-Antenna-HGA7T/dp/B000B6F9CW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1199867322sr=8-1
but they didn't really make much difference, and so decided to upgrade
my WRT54GS version 6 to DD-WRT micro as in
http://www.wrtrouters.com/guides/upgradetolinux/ it seems to be working
fine, but I still don't really seem to have achieved any increase in
signal strength? What are my options? and as in another thread, have
now lost internet.

[slim] Virgin broadband and DD-WRT

2008-01-09 Thread Gibbo

Please Help!!!

I've just upgraded my WRT54GS version 6 to DD-WRT micro.

I have a cable modem for my virgin broadband, and the router plugged
into that. stupidly I didn't really check all the changes and settings
i'd put into my wireless to get it working, before flashing and
upgrading. now the wireless router works, my SB's work fine, the
internet light is on on the wireless router, but the computer can't get
internet, haven't checked if the SB's can connect to SN (should have
done that).

What should my settings be on my wireless router? Virgin aren't much
help as they now seem to want you to use their wireless routers.

am I using it as a gateway or a router as far as DD-WRT is concerned?

Absolutely anything would be most appreciated as i'm completely lost

I have virgin media broadband(Manchester UK) and all I have ever had to
do is plug in the cable modem into the router, no additional settings
have ever been required.

If the router says it is connected to the internet then it sounds like
there is something wrong at the computers end, have you ensured that
the computer is connecting correctly. What security settings do you
have on the router (WPA/WEP?).

Funnily enough yesterday morning after returning from holiday I had
exactly the same problem (i.e. router says it was connected to internet
but the computer wouldn't connect). It resolved its self in about 30mins
and I put it down to a VM glitch.

[slim] Receiver with no display - why?

2008-01-09 Thread max . spicer

I'm curious about the rational behind removing the display from the new
receiver. I understand that the controller now does all the display
work, but can't see how this removes the need for a display on the
receiver itself. The controller provides a great interface for
selecting and browsing music, but I find the Squeezebox's display
invaluable for actually seeing what is being played. With multi-room
audio, this is especially an issue, as you get the possibility of one
room's audio being programmed from somewhere completely different.
Without a display on the receiver, how do people in the room know what
they're listening to?

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

Hi,
this new controller seems nice. I currently have a SB2 setup at home,
but find the display hard to read from some distance. I also like the
album art display. I have a few questions:

- Is it possible to control SoftSqueeze from the squeezebox
controller?
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SoftSqueeze

- Why dont you make a kitchen radio/music player for me? :) (Henry
kloss style, only buttons and display, no remote, good mono speaker
(Fostex FE107E or similiar) I want to listen to internet radio and my
music collection in my kitchen as well. I would pay about $400 for such
a device I think.

If it is possible to control Softsqueeze from the controller, I might
be able to take the SB2 out of my main system and hack together my own
kitchen player from its parts.

best regards,

Put a screen on it and you have a SB3 as far as 99.9% of people are

Re: [slim] Help with issues installing Slim Server 6.5.4.

Hi Groovit,

The IP will depend on your network setup.

Since you are on XP, Start Menu - Run - type cmd into the window and
hit ok.

Then when the command window comes up, type ipconfig

This will then tell you the IP address.

It sounds like your installation is totally mashed! I would recommend
that you temporarily disable any firewall/anti virus software you have
and run the install again, sometimes the install may appear to have
frozen but its actually doing stuff in the background so leave it for a
few minutes and hopefully it will complete :)

Re: [slim] Transporter vs. SB3 - my experience

2008-01-09 Thread NewBuyer

I wish my Transporter was working flawlessly. :(

Some of the various issues I've been finding with it, are mentioned in
the Transporter issues thread in this General Discussion forum.

For instance, approximately 30 minutes ago, the volume knob completely
stopped functioning AGAIN, this time after switching between internet
radio and my local music library. About 4 hours ago, the Transporter
competely locked up AGAIN and required a power-cycle to regain normal
functionality. This time I didn't need to physically unplug the machine
to fix it, but you can probably imagine how this is still
frustrating/irritating when it happens, repeatedly over time, and
especially when you really REALLY want it to work well!

The extra features of the Transporter that distinguish it from the SB3,
are very important IMO (especially the front buttons/knob) and
conceptually make it a terrific and family-friendly audio device. These
extra features are also supposed to be worth about $1700 simoleons more
than the SB3. So why can't the end-user be reasonably expected and
advised to use them without trouble.

I would even be willing to pay a bit more than this extra premium, if
these features would work flawlessly on a (reasonably) consistent
basis.

When this Transporter works well, I love the thing!

However when it does NOT work well, which is sadly frequent, I get
depressed about needing to reconsider the 30-day return policy.

I am so extremely impressed with SD/L for creating these genius
products and software. They are absolutely stunning achievements for
everyone involved, especially us end-users.

I guess that I just wish, that I wasn't now needing to think so dang
hard about whether I can justify the significant (for me) extra cost
for the Transporter. It is obviously such an amazing device, but also
currently has these very disturbing quirks that may or may not ever be
fixed, if they are even fixable.

I wonder what others can please advise here. What would you do?

Regarding the price, while i dont fully understand why the SBC its so
much more expensive than the SBR (other than logitech's product
strategy), lets not get too hung up on it - we should all know by now
that manufactures RRP is not often actually what you end up paying -
and this is especially true with Logitech in my experience. So when you
see it on DAB's or Bestbuy cheaper you think great and buy one. And the
RRP will come down anyway, once the RD is recouped. I have always just
seen RRP's as a guide to what you should not pay more than.

other SB's, rather than a brilliant controller that can also play
music? The latter is better IMO - if people wanted a portable SB they
would be a little disappointed, if they wanted a controller that does
other stuff they would be amazed by it :)

I cant wait for a version of Soft Squeeze running on it. I have always
looked at it and thought 'what if' - one of the first questions i asked
after getting my beta SBC was 'can i listen to music through it?'

Mainly, i would like a sort of basic DJ feature (although i was
thinking more about using the headphones).

Thats just one of lots of reasons i cant wait to see the software added
to play music on the controller, such as listening to the Cricket
results/commentary without interrupting my GF's TV show and still be
able to stay on the Sofa with her. Or listening to my tunes/podcasts
while moving the lawn. Or jacking it into a boombox... The list is
endless.

Hopefully a version of Softsqueeze be be available for the Jive
platform eventually (if its not already in early development already
;)), especially given how much interest there already is around it.

That direction of discussion, though, probably isn't relevant to the

the best sound quality as a priority. Spending $400 to $1000 per sound
card per zone wouldn't doesn't much sense when using inexpensive
in-wall speakers and a cheap amp.

Just what I was about to post! I happened to have the m-audio left over
from a previous HTPC build and found it fit for purpose. If it had not
been to hand, I would most likely have used a cheap sound blaster or
similar. Given that this is for whole house audio using budget amps and
mix and match speakers, the set up is more than adequate. (For serious
listening, a more serious system would be advised).

Having said that, I'm more than happy with the sound quality, given
that it's always background in any case. One could install RME or
higher end sound cards for beter output.

Or, if your files are tagged, you could set each Squeezebox up to use a
different Audioscrobbler account and monitor them that way - although
the data would then be publicly available (to anyone who knew the
account names) and you can't use it for commercial purposes without a
separate licence.

Re: [slim] GUTTED: The end of Pandora in the UK!

2008-01-09 Thread yockers

I'd be interested to find out exactly how much the record companies
where after. How much, exactly, is too much ?

How inventive where Pandora in their negotiations ? After all, our
saved radio stations would be valuable information to a record
companies marketing department.

And I was always amazed, as a subscriber, that totally free access was
given, for the sake of a very unintrusive advert. With no real
incentive for people to subscribe, the monies where never going to come
in. My insight into their business model is only what I see as a
consumer, but it doesn't seem like a great one to me.

I must have told a dozen people about the Pandora service, all of whom
would have happily paid for a subscription at Pandora's nominal rates,
but didn't, simply because there was no need to.

And no, none of us were motivated to buy a BigMac either ;o)

If you gave out a free trial period of a few hours play, and then
charged everyone to keep the service, I'd expect the user retention
rate would of been pretty high. I'd have happily paid £10 a month for
the service. With real money coming into their coffers, they'd have
been in a stronger position.

Also regarding the lack of working headphone on release - could it not
be that this is partly because logitech dont actually want the

Unlikely since there is still optimisation development ongoing.

Even when that is finished there are other consideration for audio:
1. There is limited CPU power available and if streaming audio impacts
controller functionality then it may not be feasible as a production
feature.
2. It has been stated that if audio is supported it will not be
Softsqueeze but another (more efficient ?) architecture - that has yet
to be developed.
3. Battery power when continuously streaming audio over wifi will
probably be very short - so most likely have to be use SBC in a cradle
when streaming audio.

Re: [slim] GUTTED: The end of Pandora in the UK!

2008-01-09 Thread Siduhe

Yockers,

The actual royalty payments are fixed by the UK Copyright Tribunal - no
room for negotiation. The problem is that the royalty format put
forward in the UK by the MCPS/PRS doesn't take account of the Pandora
model - it is a 'per song' format but is required each time a song is
played. Pandora serves up individual streams, and plays the same song
many times over, so each song played to each user essentially requires
a separate licence.

The most detailed analysis I've seen is on one of the Media blogs -
can't comment on the accuracy of his UK user base figures but the
royalty payment figures are correct:

Robert Andrews Wrote:
For background, the online license from the MCPS-PRS alone - which
collects royalties on music and lyrics for songwriters, publishers and
composers - asks interactive webcasters to pay either 6.5 percent of
company revenue, or, if it’s greater, a minimum total of microfees
(£0.085 per song streamed, £0.22 per premium customer per month).

With 2007 revenues of $14 million (£7 million), Pandora would seemingly
have been asked to pay a 6.5 percent charge of around £455,000 to
MCPS-PRS. But, because the millions of songs it serves to user
simultaneously rack up royalty microfees totalling in excess of that,
it’s forced to pay significantly more.

Pandora doesn’t have concrete figures for its UK userbase, at best
guesstimating “in the low hundreds of thousands”. So, for a
 back-of-the-envelope calculation… if 200,000 users played 30 songs a
month (just one a day), at MCPS-PRS’ cost of £0.085 each, Pandora would
appear to owe £510,000 per month, or £6.1 million a year.

http://www.paidcontent.co.uk/entry/419-more-on-pandora-doing-the-math-on-quitting-uk1/

That's a lot of £10...

Hi,

first of all i would like to thank you for your response on this
thread. Besides on this, i think that this is a good
opportunity to start a thread related to performance / scalability /
reliability / stability of slim server while
talking for providing a service (mp3 library service or playlists/
internet radio service) where many squeezeboxes
will be able to connect to.

As far as i understood (please correct if i am doing wrong) delivering
content on squezeeboxes is only possible trough
the slim server. The squeezebox can connect only to a slim server and
get local mp3 files, other playlists
(where content may located on remote servers), or get live internet
radio stations where are relayed by the slim server.
So, even if the real content is not hosted on the slim server, it is
delivered/realyed through the slim server.

If this is true then this kind of service (which is based on slim
server) doesnt scale (it only scales when you drive different
squeezeboxes to connect to different instances of slim servers - but
this manually solution is not viable).

Please correct me if i am doing wrong.

So, is it possible to provide a service where the squeezebox will
connect to on a different software server?
(e.g. QuickTime Streaming server, windows media services, etc.. ? )
does anybody has any experience on this?

Interesting question. I would think that the gist of it would be, On
one server computer, how much CPU and memory can you throw at it before
the SlimServer software cannot make any more use of the incremental
horsepower? If the constraint is really the hardware rather than the
software, then one could scale as much as current hardware capabilities
allow under a given budget. Of course, multiple networks might be
required to provide the necessary bandwidth.

Perhaps one of the developers could chime in on this.

It seems Logitech might've been very close to indeed making a portable
Squeezebox. From the pictures of the controller it doesn't look like
it has an accessory connector at the bottom between the charging pins,
which is a shame, because a set of powered speakers that the controller
could plug into ala iPod would be fantastic. With an SD card slot
(hopefully SDHC)could there be an option to store some music locally
and say, connect it to your car?

I'm not interested in the Duet combo, since I have 2 SB3s as it is and
don't want quite see the need in my current setup (I don't even use my
N800 with it that much). If I could take it with me then I might be
interested in a controller as the much desired portable Squeezebox.

When I get a Squeezebox, I will certainly post subjective comparison.
The thing is, if you have a PC serving tunes anyway, why not leverage
it as your playback system as well (for a small extra outlay).

Regarding sound quality, in the past I have used ASIO drivers to bypass
the windows kmixer on the m-audio card. This negates many of the
arguments against onboard decoding (resampling!) and provided the audio
card has decent dac circuitry, you can't really get much cleaner audio
out.

In another post, it was said the photos were taken months ago using
mockups and LCD displayed was simulated so don't make assumptions based
on the press photos. Look at the live ones from CES.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox options to stream

2008-01-09 Thread bpa

if the internet radio can deliver native formats such as WMA and MP3
then the SB communicates directly with the source and Slimserver is not
used except for screen text. Similarly for podcasts.

This is the basis for Squeezenetwork (which is essentially a set of
public slimservers with no local files) which can handle many SB users.
Logitech may be able to say current peak usage of Squeezenetwork.

Given the input method for typing names, it would be especially useful
for me to get to artists or albums quickly. And of course if decent
enough, or if it had a jack for a better mic, you could do some simple
room correction.

For me, playing a sample is useful now and then, but I usually remember
songs. However, a voice to echo commands and band names for people with
restricted vision could be a good selling point. I wonder if there's
space on the handset to store the samples to do text to voice?

I still struggle to see it's value as a player though, iPods do it so
much better - and cheaper.

SqueezeCenter (SC) is the new name for SlimServer (SS) from version 7.0
onwards.

Sqeezebox Controller is the new remote control based on the Jive
software platform which has been in discussion for some time.

Squeezebox Receiver is the new screen-less Squeezebox.

Duet is a bundle package including one Controller and one Receiver.

Yes, but the squeezecenter is not so spectacularly different from

That being said, can someone explain if the new controller will be

Of course not!

I think you guys have seriously missed the boat here. Your
competition is not really your direct competition! Sonos' customers
are looking for one thing. An all-inclusive, simple to use product that
streams audio in a neat little package that puts speakers and amp in one
 box.

This long time SliMP3/SB user has definitely been jealous of the Sonos.
Not because of the built-in amps or the architecture but because of the
slick
smart remote with local display. I could have - and actually *have* -
predicted that SD would bring out a similar controller, because it was
the one thing that there main competitor did better. The addition of the
SBR is interesting but not that spectacular. I already have a 4xSB3
network and I don't need extra units. I can use two SBC's even if they
are much more expensive than I hoped.

[slim] Duet pricing

2008-01-09 Thread mkt

If you think that $399 is a good price for an amazing digital music
source with software that just works on all platforms, you've likely
already bought at least one SB 3 and are trying to justify buying
another, or a Transporter.

If you've held off buying your first (or second) SB 3, the ultimate in
performance to price ratio, the Duet may not be that attractive.

For cheap people like myself, the SB Receiver is very attractive. I
hope that it can eventually be configured without the Controller. Do
you need the Controller to use the Receiver in wired mode? Receiver
plus wireless bridge would be less than a SB 3. I think that a usable
(PC-controlled) standalone Receiver would sell like crazy. It would be
like an Airport Express that can sync with other SB's.

And, again for cheap people like me, I could justify an iTouch more
easily than the SB Controller.

I'm a happy SB 3 owner looking for a cheap, wireless, multi-room
solution.

They've either been asking directly, or indirectly, as in Why can't
you make an SB that is much less expensive, say, around the $150 price
point? Taking away the VFD makes that possible. A lot of users still
prefer controlling their SB2/SB3 via computer, pda, Nokia770, etc, so
this works for them without the SBC. And with the SBC, you don't need
the VFD.

I guess the other indirect way of asking for it that is often heard in
these forums is Why can't it be more like Sonos? ;o)

People are asking for it, the engineers say it's possible.

Hey, Why not just run the Controller's Jive software in an emulator,
kinda like running softsqueeze.

This is the basis for Squeezenetwork (which is essentially a set of
public slimservers with no local files) which can handle many SB users.
Logitech may be able to say current peak usage of Squeezenetwork.

I guess that this is also applies for a plyalist where the files
(inside the list) are hosted on a remote web server, right?

BTW, has anybody was ever able to connect SB to any other streaming
platform ?

Have you tried contacting SD support? If you do have a bad unit, they
may swap it out for you.

Does/will the Controller support SHDC cards? With 32GB nearly here
that will easily hold my library if transcoded into mp3. That would
make my entire library ready to travel. Now I'm interested in buying
one.

The SC code is very scalable, SqueezeNetwork serves many thousands of

I am sure that is just a matter of time. Of course that would mean
running to the computer to control the display-less SB4 base.

I kind of like a mix of a base with a better display, and a controller
with a more graphic user interface. I think both concepts serve
different environments in the home environment.

I knid of hope next on the roadmap is a more compact, less boxy and
less costly version of the TP, meaning something with a design emphasis
on sound quality with far more compact packaging a la SB3.

I'd have a mix of that and duets arround the house. I think $399 is
what I'd expect to pay for a SB3 with the duets remote, but it's
possible that experiencing the duets capabilities changes my
perspective. I just like some degree of display information on the
base.

Yes you do.

out of the box, the Reciever and Controller create a little ad-hoc
network, the Controller then lets you set up the Reciever to use
whatever other network in present (wired or wireless) and the
SqueezeCenter to connect to along with any other network settings.

Actually if we're going to nit-pick, it's 510,000 pence (ie. £5,100).
But that doesn't alter the fact that the powers that be have definitely

Put another way if each listener gets 80 songs per day (4hrs @ 3mins
per song) = 2400 a month then 2400 x 0.085p = £2.04 per month. Seems
very reasonable or is my calculation flawed?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox options to stream

2008-01-09 Thread bpa

BTW, has anybody was ever able to connect SB to any other streaming
 platform ?

The SB is a thin client - which in this case it has a basic
functionality to fetch audio but all the display control has to come
from a server. SB has a proprietary control protocol - called
slimproto.

The main server is Slimserver/SqueezeCenter. Servers such as Itunes or
WMP use different protocol standard (e.g. DAAP and uPNP) and so to use
these you would have to write an interface applications.

Over the years a few users felt that Slimserver/SqueezeCenter has got
too big and have implemented lightweight less functional alternative
servers which implement slimproto. Search the firum and you will find
them.
