Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-10-02 Thread Doc_D

I have been frustrated by these symptoms and I am glad that I found this
thread.

I have an incident open [Incident: 080916-002230]

I initially tried the receiver and remote connected wireless to my main
network via a Linksys WAP54G Wireless Access Point (Firmware 3.0.5)
Australian Wireless Chan 11. The DHCP is handled by a Windows 2000
server with reservations set for both Receiver and Controller. I had
just picked up a Dell Poweredge 2650 server for work so I installed
Windows 2003 server, joined it to my AD domain and ran SqueezeCenter on
that. In an attempt to increase reliability I ran a CAT5 to the Receiver
from a Netgear 24 port switch. No much changed. Installed The
SqueezeCentre App on a Windows XP workstation. No much changed, still
unreliable controller connections.

My Network's Gateway/Router is a Billion VGOM with Wireless (at the
other end of the house from the Linksys WAP) I tried moving the
Controller's connection to that connection (Australian Wireless Chan 1)
but no real change.

After creating the ticket with support and getting the typical
instructions on how to reset the Duet system, I moved the the
Squeezebox off of the main network completely and connected it to a
small network that I use for some hosting and VoIP stuff. This consists
of a Linksys WRT54GL running dd-wrt v24-sp1. With the exception of
listening to internet radio stations, Frankly its worse! The remote
still falls of the network giving me either Blue WiFi icon or after
waking up gives the endless life-ring of death 'Connecting to
Squeezebox' but now with the added frustration of songs stopping
part-way through.

I have submitted a log from squeezecentre (on the Poweredge) as a part
of the incident ticket. It has some networking issues.

Looking at this thread I am sure that with some effort it could be
easily reproduced.

If people are reporting that the problem might be worse with version
7.2. Where can we access older version?

Like others have stated, all wireless networking in my environment with
the exception of this latest addition, is very reliable. I don't believe
updating firmware on routers is the right tree to bark up.

Regards,

MD

Correct. MusicIP scanning is independant, uses it's own trigger (see

To me it seems that they are focusing on the red icon right now

And once agin I would like to suggest that they should hurry giving us
the feature of assigning a static IP to the controller. I would guess
that this would help a lot of us (not all of us have access to the

This is actually how I'm working around the problem currently, thanks
anyway (sincerely appreciate your explanations). Unfortunately this
method is painful for 2 reasons - one because the files have long names
that are often awkward to differentiate, and secondly because it's not
instantly apparent which file is the CUE and which is the MP3 (the
provided filenames bodies are identical) - so it's necessary to examine
the characteristics of each file to determine which is the CUE and which
is the MP3.

However I'm convinced there's got to be a simpler way than this. A year
ago when battling with this (on a previous server installation) I read
somewhere that physically putting the CUE files themselves in the
'Playlists Folder' was an option, the downside being that each CUE file
needed editing by amending the path to the audio file, since the CUE was
now split up from its MP3 file pairing, ie. in a different folder
location (and volume). I may be mistaken but... subsequent to me
experimenting with that workaround, I noticed that, bizarrely, new
additions were appearing in Playlists without me doing this CUE jiggery
for those new files, but this was happening inconsistently!

Re: [slim] Squeezebox with HDD?

2008-10-02 Thread Howard Passman

ajkidle;345897 Wrote:
Any chance that future version of the Squeezebox products would include
a hard drive, similar to a DVR? My thinking is that this could be
 beneficial in a few ways:

1 - No computer required to run SqueezeCenter, just run it directly on
 the device.

2 - Could support services like Rhapsody-To-Go. This would be super
cool for the Boom: the ability to unlock it from the constraints of
being on a network and take your music with you.

3 - Store your music collection directly on the device. Instead of
having to stream your local music from another computer on the network
(which has to be powered on,) the SB could serve as the host.

I'm sure I'm not the first to have this idea, but a quick search of the
forums didn't turn anything up so I thought I'd throw it out there.
Actual implementation could go a variety of ways: an HDD could be an
option so as to keep the base price low, or maybe the deivce could just
have a SATA or USB connection for people to add their own storage later
 if they want.

 Great products, by the way.

 Andy

I had the idea of cramming a SBR in the 5.25 slot of a Shuttle PC. It
would be small (relatively) portable (again, relatively) and could pull
the music right off of the hard drive (basically). You could put two
NIC cards in it and still network it for Internet connectivity. Of
course I took a sound whipping about the feasability. I still may give
it a try someday.

Now it won‘t connect - and looking at the webserver on my laptop it

first thought - what a pile of junk.

second thought - nothing has filled up so no configs have vanished...
well obviously something has changed.. ;

[slim] Duet with Two Boxes, won't sync properly..?

2008-10-02 Thread AngelEyes

Hi,

I have done a search for 'Synch' but haven't found anything useful,
hopefully someone can help?

I have been using a Duet and single base station (in my Kitchen) for a
few months now and get on fine using a wireless network.

I just added a second base station for my Lounge. I can connect via
Wireless or Lan but either connection does not seem to Synch properly
with the 'Kitchen'.

I ahve set the Lounge to Sync to the Kitchen in the Controller menu and
in Squeezecentre on my PC. When I choose the Kitchen as the player and
select a track the Lounge starts playing instantly but the Kitchen
takes another 5-10 seconds to start playing.

This is obviously the most basic requisite for the Duet so I know it is
most likely a settings issue. Any ideas what settings I should be
checking to put this right?

Thanks very much,

Adam

PS. Using Squeezecentre 7.2 on Vista64
Controller Firmware updated 02/10/08

Re: [slim] Duet with Two Boxes, won't sync properly..?

2008-10-02 Thread Skunk

Are you playing local music, and if so what file type, or internet
radio?

My only guess would be a wireless reception issue. Is there any way you
can move them around or try wired ethernet to both players? In the
Status pane from the web interface it lists wireless strength for both
players, so if there's a big difference it may be your issue. You could
also try checking Player Settings for any differences e.g. bitrate
limiting.

Sorry I can't be of more help. You may want to consider contacting tech
support if it's convenient.

Re: [slim] Duet with Two Boxes, won't sync properly..?

2008-10-02 Thread AngelEyes

Thanks for the reply :)

Wireless strength is rounghly the same and the file type doesn't seem
to matter, I tried AppleLossless and FLAC. The files are hosted locally
on a PC with Gigabit lan.

I also tried running the 'Lounge' on wired Lan with the same results. I
will try and check the bitrate settings as you suggested and have logged
a support ticket with Logitech.

Re: [slim] Deleting files or favorites

2008-10-02 Thread Siduhe

You don't say what version of Squeezecenter you are running but assuming
it is fairly recent:

In the web interface, navigate to favourites and click the little X
next to each favourite you want to delete.

To remove songs from your library, you need to remove the files
physically from the location of your music library and do a full clear
and rescan in Squeezecenter so that SC builds the database without
them. You can't delete files directly from within Squeezecenter.

[slim] I'd like to fill a bug report but I don't know where: Controller or Receiver ?

2008-10-02 Thread epoch1970

As said in the title, I bought a Duet, and while I am getting more and
more intimate with it, I don't know who goes wrong here, the Controller
or the Receiver.
The problem is simple: the Duet in bridged mode does not wake my SC
server. It never did.

Isn't the *Receiver* supposed to send the WOL packets over the network
? I see bugs filed (and resolved...) about the Controller being able to
send WOL packets but nothing much about the Receiver.

Anyone in bridged mode with a server that wakes-up ? Is this issue in
the radar already ?

This is a test trace:

Code:

1) Setup a listening host on my lan sudo tcpdump -vvv -x -i 1 -n -t -l -s

tcpdump: WARNING: eth0: no IPv4 address assigned

  2) Sleep SC 7.2 server, music playing.

  3) On some host: wol -vvv 00:17:31:38:46:c8

This is the Controller (.251) trying to wake the Receiver (.250)...

The Recever never sends a WOL packet to the server, hence the server does not
wake-up. It sends frames however, but they don't exactly look like WOL packets
and I can't see my servers MAC in it:

The most often seen are like this:
IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 1267, offset 0, flags [none], proto: UDP (17),
length: 46) 192.168.1.250.3483 255.255.255.255.3483: [udp sum ok] UDP, length

0x0020: 0004 2016 2582

And from time to time this longer one:
IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 1238, offset 0, flags [none], proto: UDP (17),
length: 107) 192.168.1.250.17784 255.255.255.255.32772: [udp sum ok] UDP,

Reconnect fails. Controller forgets the SC server, game over.
And then the Controller said battery empty. Sure, I can fix that.

[slim] SC7.2 on Qnap 109

2008-10-02 Thread keithbliss

Hi I have downloaded SC7.2 to update the old version of Slimserver which
was preinstalled on the 109. It has eventually recognised my SB3 and
transporter and music directory but I can only use them if my PC is
switched on. When I search from a player it cant connect to SC7.2 but
it will connect through my PC name. Is there something else I need to
load on the Qnap? I have tried disabliing all security but doesnt help.
I am running Vista.
Any help greatly appreciated as I cant find anything on the forum and
supplier doesnt answer problem emails!
Thanks
Keith

New version due out shortly when I got a few spare hours to finish it
=)
(If you have a stack of foreign chars in your files then it will have

In respect to a normal MIP install though as long as MIP GUI is looking
at your files at; e.g. c:\music or \\nas\music
You have the MIP headless set up correctly and each time you update the
MIP GUI you load up the MIP headless and get a reload cache button
appear (which symbolises its working ok) and press that button

(Check that SC path is same as above e.g. c:\music or \\nas\music)
Then its just a case of SC refresh, new changes or full scan should be
it!

Yeah I must get around to updating Spicefly Syncer to SCv7 :s

Re: [slim] MusicIP - definitive install instructions for 7.1/7.2 (inc. headless)?

2008-10-02 Thread cparker

The issue boils down to the play this file command to SC which goes ok..
and then doesnt stack it. The MIP request works fine.

I already use a lot of CLI commands just a shame the documentation for
SC is so poor and pretty impenetrable to the novice perl gardener..
maybe one day it will have a stronger API and proper support from SC
devs for plugin devs who add bells and polish the fragile shell that is
SC.

Though I reckon by the day that comes along I will have long got bored
of it!

In my defense, this is somewhat inconsistent from a UI standpoint. When

Why make the behavior different in the All Songs function?

Regardless, the feature now works as I would expect by simply pressing

Re: [slim] Duet with Two Boxes, won't sync properly..?

2008-10-02 Thread ds2021

Proper sync is not something that you should need to configure to have
work properly. My experience is that it simply works. So I am not not
sure that it is something that you are failing to do. Having said that
there are sync settings in Settings Player Sync that you can try
adjusting.

It sounds like the Kitchen player is the issue, and not the lounge. I
assume that it is configured wirelessly. If so, there could be a
connectivity issue in that location. As a test, you could try placing
the kitchen player elsewhere in the house, perhaps close to the lounge
player. If you see an improvement in synced performance as a result, it
is likely a location-specific issue. If so, there are a number of things
that can account for this; one I used to encounter in my kitchen was
interference from a neighbour's wifi network.

Try changing wireless channel. That could help with interference.
Changing routers worked for me in a similar scenario, having gone to N.
Use of a homeplug can also help resolve issues related to interference.

Anyway, in the Default skin, the buttons do not do anything *at

If that is a consequence of using a streaming mp3 client instead of a

I use Napster for unlimited music downloads at $12.95 a month while
itunes charges $.99 per song (same extensive libarary as itunes). At
the volume I download music, Id go broke downloading from itunes. Of
course, the first thing I do is conveniently remove DRM using tunebite
6.0.

[slim] I'd like to file a bug report but I don't know where: Controller or Receiver ?

2008-10-02 Thread epoch1970

Felix,
thanks for the info. I tried twice.

However, pressing the button on the Receiver didn't woke up the
computer (I am using firmware 47, SC 7.3 right now). As I insisted on
the button, the SBR turned to red fan mode... Had to restore and
re-pair the Controller.
Well, at least I had a good laugh.

Let's say it works with SC stable. This solution remains quite
unsatisfactory. An SB wakes the server from the remote control. I want
exactly the same behavior for the Duet in bridged mode.

Now, shall I post a bug report, or would it merely be a duplicate ?

You may actually be seeing this:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6442

This bug is highly dependent on the format of the music being decoded,
so I am currently working around a similar situation in my setup by
disabling native decoding and configuring SqueezeCenter to transcode
everything to FLAC.

[slim] I'd like to file a bug report but I don't know where: Controller or Receiver ?

2008-10-02 Thread Mnyb

This is the rigth thing to do !
There is a bug for WOL that is closed, besides the obvius fact that WOL
still does not work reliably.
I have a pretty simple and stright forward setup I can wol in most of
the cases when it should work (but not all )
Wol in 7.2 beta was better than in the 7.3 beta.

WOL in adhoc conection mode should work to, thats very resonable thing
to ask for.
So file bug for the reciever I think ? as there is some kind of wol
working on controller ? it realy does not matter, as the person
assigned to the bug can change this to something else if they want.

I think there is an bug for wol in adhoc mode ? but it's not easy to
search bugzilla, so file a bug if it is a dupe somebody will fix that.

What realy amazes me is that this did not work from day one as the
other SB products have WOL working quite good ?

I was using Avira Antivirus, but I read a couple of posts online about
AV Software interfering with slimserver so I uninstalled it, thinking
this would make a difference.

Didn't make a difference unfortunately, it still has the same problem.

Could it be a Firewall setting? I've (as far as I know) given
Squeezecentre maximum permissions in my Firewall.

Could it be a Router configuration setting?
(I dont know much about networkingbut I can get online!)*

Does DHCP Vs Static IP kind of thing come into this problem?

I see from other posts this problem seems to have came up in Ver.
7.2..would an earlier version of Squeezecentre not have this problem?

I am actually using the latest build 7.2.1..

Thanks.

Re: [slim] FLAC format for videos?

2008-10-02 Thread Gibbo

Ok, so basically your looking for a network media tank, check 'this
forum'
(http://www.avforums.com/forums/streamers-network-media-players/) out.

the top nmt at the moment seem to be the popcorn hour as mentioned A100
has just upgraded to the A110, the eg-m31B which I'm thinking of
getting, and the HDX 1000 they all connect to a nas, your computer or
an internal SATA to read and play pretty much any video format. The
don't sell much in the UK but can be got from digitalera.com but in the
us or uk can be brought from their respective companies.

They all run the same software the only difference is the hardware,
popcorn hour is the most popular as it is made by the company that make
the firmware hence seems to benefit most, but the others have other
benefits, ie the eg-m31b has an eSATA slave connector, it all depends
what you need.

There are a load out there made by tvix, not a clure about them
personally as they are more pricey, don't know if they are worth the
extra.

Hope this is some help.

This isn't the usual AV problem (which results in an error about not
being able to write to a file). In this case, the message is implying
that MySQL is crashing during a transaction. Is this consistent and
reproducable? Could be you're triggering some weird MySQL bug. What OS
are you on, and are you using anything like a custom MySQL
installation?

It won't be anything to do with firewalls/networking or anything like
that.

[slim] Wallwart adapter (calling any Aussies/NZers in UK)

2008-10-02 Thread fredbloggs

Hi,

I purchased my Squeezeboxes (v3) in the UK and have used them quite
extnsivley thank you very much.

I have however now moved to NZ and have to subject myself to using a UK
NZ plug adapter which is really quite annoying (not sure if I have the
ears to tell the differnce in sound quality).

have contacted Logieech support APAC and they don't stock the Oz/NZ
power adapters as spares, so i'm wondering whether anyone on here is
suffering the same issue in reverse and wants to somehow swap.

Thi has also made me wonder what happens if my power supply dies, do I
have to order a completely new Squeezebox?

Thanks

all that's necessary iro creating MP3 from my FLAC library. A while

Me too !

I think Controller is OK in an apartment or small house works flawless
for me.
I'm never more than 10 meters away from the AP not to many concrete
walls with rebars,

In a big house one could see problems comming even at the dev state ?
so why not thought of as an initial design goal :-)

Scenario: big house with multiple SBR's this will not work without
roaming ?

An added bonus would be if roaming could be extended to SBR's in adhoc
mode, so your ethernet conected SBR's could act as base stations for
the SBC.
I don't now if this is possible at all.

What probable saves the day is that the controller does only need a
fraction of the bitrates that the players wants, this is going to
change when streaming audio is supported directly on the controller ?

I agree it would be nice to support roaming. My house isn't huge
(3000sqft/280sqm) but I had wireless problems in one room (the furthest
away from the WAP) so I added an upstairs WAP to provide better
coverage. To be fair, the SBC actually worked better than anything else
(e.g. laptops) in that room. I'm lucky enough to have enough SBCs that I
don't need to move them between rooms much so it's OK that they're
assigned to a specific WAP.

I use Netstumbler on a laptop to check signal strength from the WiFi
router. (Just did a Google search -
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/)
Good luck getting the BoomBox.
