Oh,

The Sony products sound FABULOUS. I heard them a couple of weeks in a
row.

I was born in 1955 and they sound EXACTLY like the TRANSISTOR radios my
parent's friends used to hold outside the windows while we were going
down the road when I was too young to remember the year.

What are you basing your comment on?

OK, this is BS. I am basing this on making the systems that keep track
of the sales subject to spiffs and how the salespeople are paid.

I have been doing this for a decade.5

Spiff systems are dependent on their retailer. They can involve
packages like camera bodies and lenses or simple SKU's like (and
mostly involving extended warranties.) An SKU is a line item on your
sales slip. It stands for Stock keeping unit and it could be anything
from what you bought to the warranty on it or whether the salesperson
thought you would respond to a later mail to pay for an extended
warranty.

Who are you and what's your basis?

Or, you can think about cables. Are some better?

[slim] Add running track to a not currently playing playlist?

2009-10-11 Thread SilverRS8

Often I just play an album. Some tracks a good enough to add to an
existing playlist just by using the options 'behind'the track playing.
Do any of you know if there is a plugin that provides this functionality
on - most importantly - the controller?

It would be much more easy then first having to play the playlist and
then add the song especially when it concerns different playlists.

Linksys will work fine as an AP. Just turn off DHCP server and connect

I have the WAN port configured as automatic configuration -DHCP but I
think it makes no difference. Make the Linksys own IP address does not

[slim] Squeezebox 3 innards question

2009-10-11 Thread kitecarl

Hi everyone,

I sadly have 2 SB3s that both seem to be fried. One was moved over
from the US to the UK and hasn't worked since arriving (potential damage
while shipping is my guess) and the other got knocked off a table top
quite hard the other night by my 2-year-old. Both have an issue where,
you plug in the power cord, and nothing happens. The only lights
visible on the device is the dim infrared light in the back. Sean
himself posted in a previous forum question (right after I moved to the
UK) to take the case off to see if any connections look visibly damaged.
No such luck - from my untrained eye everything looks fine.

So that's my situation. Neither of the devices owe me anything
(they're both around 4 years old) but if anyone has suggestions on what
I could do to try to resurrect them, I'd be grateful. Muchos gracias.

Tell us how you did it, 'cause the last post that I recall was
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=423180postcount=59.

I think the last post was about trying to move the cache folder. I
never had success doing that. The cache folder still resides in C: and
even if you start fresh and try to load SC in a second drive, it still
puts the cache folder in c:. It doesn't seem to affect scan times
though.

I have dedicated this little machine to just music. On the RAMDISK
I've loaded iTunes, SC and Foobar2000. Since this machine never goes
out on to the Internet I didn't even put virus protection on it.

Even nicer than SC, iTunes opens in about 2.5 seconds. Foobar200 you
can't even time it. SC opens the default skin UI in less than 5 seconds.
Just for fun I just ran a clear library and rescan and that took 4
minutes and 22 seconds to rescan 168GB of flac files.

There's 4GB of RAM on the machine and I've assigned 1.5GB to the
RAMDISK. As I said SC, iTunes and Foobar200 reside on the RAMDISK and
I've also put Windows page files and Temporary Internet files on there
also. The temporary Internet files are from using SC and obviously they
help that load a little quicker.

I guess I should say that I use a OCZ Vertex 30GB drive as my C drive.
I did that first and it helped some, but the RAMDISK was the huge
change.

The rest of the system is a E8500 processor (3.16GHz Core 2) and
Windows XP SP2. There's a second drive for my music and an external
eSATA drive to back up to.

The whole thing runs rock solid and the assorted SB's run without any
problems including flawless playback on my SBC. I wouldn't dare change
a thing :-)

No. It is the software that drives the players, the SqueezeCetner forum

like All things Squeezebox Server, the software formerly known as
SqueezeCenter.

Slimserver is old enough that I think we can drop that out.

Re: [slim] Volume Sync of Multiple Players?

2009-10-11 Thread Mark W

I tried the volume sync feature, and it's OK, but I was expecting
something more like what Sonos demonstrates on one of their web site
videos. There, you can adjust a master volume control and all of the
receiver's volumes are adjusted up and down from where they are
originally set.

Instead, the current sync volume feature sets the receiver volumes to
the same setting, which is then adjusted up and down. This results in
one or the other receiver being too loud or soft (e.g. Boom vs SBR
connected to stereo).

Is there any plan to convert the receiver volume sync to something more
like what I described above? Or is there a third party plug-in out
there somewhere?

[slim] Wrong size artwork, but only on first track??

2009-10-11 Thread AdamKski

After failing to upgrade to Squeezeboxserver 7.4 I reverted back to
Squeezecenter 7.3.4. Now I have artwork in the playlist window that
isn't sized correctly. The first track of each Album I add to the
playlist brings up the artwork at the full size of the artwork stored in
the file. The remaining tracks have the properly resized artwork
adjacent to the track information. The artwork in the first track is
sometimes so large it covers up several of the following tracks.

I'm guessing it's an issue with one of the CPAN modules I
loaded/upgraded when I attempted the upgrade to Squeezeboxserver, but
have no idea which one, or how to unload the upgraded modules.

Anyone see this one before?

[slim] Performance Issue

2009-10-11 Thread jdbaker

I use the following setup - XP3 machine hardwired to the wireless router
as the server, attached to this computer is a 300GB external hd that
contains my lossless music files. A Vista computer hardwired to the
router that I use as my main computer, I use dbpoweramp and Itunes on
this machine to rip my music files and control my Ipod library. I use a
KVM usb switch to toggle back and forth between computers. This system
has worked very well. I recently upgraded to 7.4 and also had to change
out the HD as the 300GB was full. I hooked up the new 1TB usb harddrive
to the XP machine and set it up to share on the network, I could not get
the Vista machine to access the 1TB drive. I said ok, I will put the 1TB
drive on the Vista machine as a network drive, this worked. I am now
having performance issues with the server (rebuffering)the first song of
a playlist, and if I try to search my music by album it causes
everything to slow down and extreme rebuffering. Is having the music
files on a network drive instead of directly attached to the server
computer a problem? Should I move dbpoweramp. Itunes and the 1TB drive
to the XP computer (2gz P4 w/1gb ram) and make that into my music
computer? I also use it for some work related programs I did not want to
update to Vista. Or should I move the server software to the Vista
machine?

[slim] Volume rises very slowly since upgrade

2009-10-11 Thread pbol

Hi,

Since I upgraded the controler to 7.4 it reacts very slowly on the
volume dial and the buttons. If I press the buttons several times
quickly, the volumne counts up (or down) about one step a second. Same
if I use the dial, the controler needs up to 5 seconds just to step 3-4
step up ord down.

Aynone who ahs expericneced the same?

/peter

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-11 Thread sflen

First off, thank you for a great program!

I have encountered a sync error. Background:

Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1. iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4

4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these
are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom
SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox.

While experimenting with your program, I took the Master Bedroom off
sync. Using your program, I then put the Master Bedroom back in sync by
tapping Kitchen. Your program then showed all three units back in sync
and there actually were in sync.

I then began to notice, for the first time ever, that periodically I
would lose the audio from my Master Bedroom. The info of the song would
continue to scroll but nothing came out of the analog outputs. I
discovered that every time I would turn off the Kitchen (all three still
in sync), within a few minutes, the Master bedroom lost its sound.
Repeatable.

I then went to my Intel iMac in Local 9000 and took the three units off
sync. Then using Local 9000 again, I first put the Master Bedroom in
sync with the Living Room and then put the Kitchen in sync with the
combined Master Bedroom and Kitchen.

Problem solved. I no longer lose the sound in the Master Bedroom when I
turn off the Kitchen.

Thought you would like to know and experiment with this.

Regards

Re: [slim] Volume rises very slowly since upgrade

2009-10-11 Thread Mark W

Yes, there was a bug that was referenced in another thread where the
controller slowed down as a function of how long it is on due to some SW
problem. The scrolling is also affected. This was fixed about last
week in 7.4.1. I've been running 7.4.1, and the problem is indeed
fixed, and it seems to be pretty stable overall.

A way to test if this is your problem is to cycle power on the
controller. If the volume responds normally after the restart, then
switching to 7.4.1 will fix your problem.

For a long long time, Softsqueeze was a project not written by Slim

have a lot less time to work on it.

So it's been returned to the community for the official release.

You can grab a copy from http://softsqueeze.sf.net/

Alternatively, there is SqueezePlay, which is similar to what runs on
the Controller, Radio and Touch. It's more official and can be
downloaded from the nightly builds site:
 http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4

Tho as the download location hints at, SqueezePlay is still not totally
official and may or may not work for you.

 Personally, I still use SoftSqueeze.

I'm totally confused by Logitech naming. This was helpful to me. What
then is SqueezeSlave? How does it relate to SoftSqueeze and
SqueezePlay?

Thanks!

Then you wouldn't have to transfer traffic between your server and your

I've had some success with fixing the problem but still don't understand
it. After doing quite a bit of Googling - I found that there is
probably some correlation between Ape V2 tags and Lame header
information. While I can't display what I was seeing in Foobar - I
found by removing all Tag information with Mp3tag, then adding new ID3
tags and then applying replaygain with Foobar - I got the correct
 settings displayed on my Squeezebox.

I tried the above on the Ultravox track in my example and now it is
showing -7.51dB in Squeezebox instead of the -14.47dB that was there
earlier. Once I had made the changes I rescanned my music and voila - it
 is all fixed.

I don't intend to do this across my entire collection but as tracks
come up that sound much lower in volume than the rest - then I will use
the above method and tool to get it sorted.

I use only mp3gain and aacgain. As you pointed out, there seems to be
a bug in the reading of tags. Some posts from earlier this year
suggested that mp3gain tags aren't properly read, so SC applies it a
second time, which could account for the doubling of the dB adjustment.
Non-tagged tracks seem to adjust properly. Just an observation.

My workaround is to continue using mp3 and aacgain and just disable the
volume adjustment on the controller.

Hi guys,

We're not ignoring the requests but we've been doing a large of work on
mobile, etc over the past months and as a small company we only have
limited resources. Working to integrate into 3rd party devices such as
Squeezebox takes a huge amount of development and legal/paper work which
we simply don't have the time for at the moment.

We do hope to add more and more devices and support in the future but
please bear with us as we're doing our best to bring music to everyone.

I'm assuming your SB is an SB original, SB2, or SB3/Classic. First,
cycle through presses on the Brightness button of the remote to make
sure that it hasn't somehow been reset to 0. If that doesn't work, what
version of SqueezeCenter/Squeezebox Server are you running? If the
problem appeared after upgrading to 7.4.0, the problem you describe
appears to be affecting some users. I'm not sure if the problem has been
fixed in the 7.4.1 betas, but you might give that a try.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-11 Thread pippin

I'll check.
Yet I don't believe this is an iPeng command. iPeng doesn't really DO
the syncing, it just tells SBS to do that, so it also can't really do a
lot wrong. This is very straightforwrd, it's sync player a to player b
period.

I'm seeing quite a few issues with syncing on SBS 7.4, too. Which kinds
of players do you use? Can you _reproduce_ the issue and what is the
sequence of things you are doing?
What kind of files are you playing?

The best way of doing this is in your router. Most of them will let you
assign a specific IP from the DHCP pool (DHCP is the technology behind
the dyanmic alocation of IPs to devices). This is how I have my network
set up too, makes things far easier all round.

Logitech to do what you suggest, which is to expend significant
resources running *both* SN and MSB because of these bugs, especially
when 2 of the 5 examples work fine on MSB for many users. The time spent
maintaining a parallel service will subtract from the time available
fixing the bugs in the new service.

Aubuti,

Please excuse what might be a stupid question.

I see comments like this from time to time and I don't completely
follow what's going on. Doesn't the company identify and track product
problems on its own? I've even seen company employees making a comment
like this in response to a problem someone has asked about. I'm not sure
I understand why or how this is something customers are responsible for.

If this is something other companies do, I've missed it completely.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

Are you saying you're surprised that some number of Logitech SMBU's
Squeezebox bugs were reported by customers/outsiders? I'm not. I expect
that a large percentage of every software vendor's bugs are reported by
customers; certainly I've reported my share of bugs that the vendor had
previously not been aware of, including to companies as large as
Microsoft.

These forums are not an official Logitech support channel, so don't be
surprised if a Logitech employee asks you to open a bug about something
you report here. Logitech staff reading these forums aren't under the
same obligations as, say, front-line customer service reps. This is a
good thing; if Logitech staff had to file paperwork every time they
perceived a problem report or enhancement request here, they'd likely
simply stay away from the forums, and that would be a bad thing for
Logitech and us.

Of course the company identifies and tracks bugs. For example, the
Shoutcast bug ('Bug 14546'
(https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14546)) was filed by
mherger, a Logitech employee. Other times users identify bugs and file
them. Regardless of who filed the bugs, employees and users are welcome
to comment on fixes, submit patches, etc. Users are not *responsible*
for this at all, and the vast majority will never visit or even hear of
bugs.slimdevices.com. You'll note that I didn't say WustrowO should file
a bug report. But for those who are interested, it is there.

This is very common in open-source software settings. It may just be an
aspect of software like Mozilla/Firefox, Thunderbird, and other programs
that you've never been aware of. (It's not a coincidence that the
popular bug tracking software is named Bugzilla.) Public bug tracking
like this may also exist in closed-source projects, although obviously
the scope for participation from those outside the company is far more
circumscribed.

Hello and welcome to the Forum. Logitech doesn't talk about future
products so for now the answer to video support is no.

Sure there are other products that stream audio, stream video, and that
stream both. For me it comes down to how much does one want to spend and
what one wants it to do for the money. I think Squeezebox excels in
price for performance. It only does audio and does it well. Especially
if one needs more then one room and more then one type of player.

If one is just getting into streaming, I highly recommend taking a step
back to see what one actually wants to end up with, then look at all the
available quality possibilities. In my opinion, an off the shelf NAS is
to be avoided at all costs. They are way over priced and are lacking in
performance for what one can buy at half the price in a proper PC
selection (whether Desktop, Nano, or Eco). Going with WHS if one just
has to have an all in one box is better then going with any NAS IMO
(especially if ones music collection is large). Been there done that. My
collection out grew both a ReadyNAS NV+ and a Thecus N5200Pro.

[slim] scanner.exe *No Disk* hanging on my CDROM drive??!!

2009-10-11 Thread dwc

I tried searching, sorry if I missed the workaround/fix for this.

ENV:
Version: 7.3.2 - 24695 @ Mon Jan 19 18:55:04 PST 2009
Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Platform Architecture: 586
Perl Version: 5.8.8 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

Every night I have a scheduled Full Scan.

If I have used the DVD-ROM drive that day, the scanner will hang on the
empty drive, with this error. My scan doesn't complete:

Code:

There is no disk in the drive, Please insert a disk into drive D:
  (cancel) (try again) (continue)

Can someone help me understand why scanner.exe got confused into caring
about my DVD drive? My scan is specifically set to a different folder
on a different drive, and this issue did not occur in the past with
past versions. I do not believe I have any links or shortcuts in my
E:\FLAC folder that point to D:.

I can's seem to get past the dialog box either, because it rolls back
my scan and a few minutes later the damn message pops up again. I have
to reboot the box to get the scanner to complete without issue, and then
the system is only stable until the next time I have to rip a CD, at
which point scanner will hang again.

Thanks for any help. Glad to provide info.
-Dan

My vote would be for Title Changes only. And I still want a Section for

that a large percentage of every software vendor's bugs are reported by
customers; certainly I've reported my share of bugs that the vendor had
previously not been aware of, including to companies as large as

Thanks, your and Aubuti's comments partially filled in the blanks.

I understand that product problems often come from customers, and I
understand the difference between a forum and a support channel. It's
more the many times I've read an employee tell someone make sure you
report this in the system that I found odd.

It was almost as if the person was saying I could care less and I'm
not going to do anything about it, if it matters to you, you need to act
on it. It seemed dismissive to me, and perhaps bordering on rude
(there's the tie in to the thread). I guess maybe that's not intended.

Thanks again.
