[slim] Squeezebox 3 innards question
Hi everyone, I sadly have 2 SB3s that both seem to be fried. One was moved over from the US to the UK and hasn't worked since arriving (potential damage while shipping is my guess) and the other got knocked off a table top quite hard the other night by my 2-year-old. Both have an issue where, you plug in the power cord, and nothing happens. The only lights visible on the device is the dim infrared light in the back. Sean himself posted in a previous forum question (right after I moved to the UK) to take the case off to see if any connections look visibly damaged. No such luck - from my untrained eye everything looks fine. So that's my situation. Neither of the devices owe me anything (they're both around 4 years old) but if anyone has suggestions on what I could do to try to resurrect them, I'd be grateful. The cache folder still resides in C: and even if you start fresh and try to load SC in a second drive, it still puts the cache folder in c:. It doesn't seem to affect scan times though. I have dedicated this little machine to just music. On the RAMDISK I've loaded iTunes, SC and Foobar2000. Since this machine never goes out on to the Internet I didn't even put virus protection on it. Even nicer than SC, iTunes opens in about 2.5 seconds. Foobar200 you can't even time it. SC opens the default skin UI in less than 5 seconds. Just for fun I just ran a clear library and rescan and that took 4 minutes and 22 seconds to rescan 168GB of flac files. There's 4GB of RAM on the machine and I've assigned 1.5GB to the RAMDISK. As I said SC, iTunes and Foobar200 reside on the RAMDISK and I've also put Windows page files and Temporary Internet files on there also. The temporary Internet files are from using SC and obviously they help that load a little quicker. I guess I should say that I use a OCZ Vertex 30GB drive as my C drive. I did that first and it helped some, but the RAMDISK was the huge change. The rest of the system is a E8500 processor (3.16GHz Core 2) and Windows XP SP2. I tried the volume sync feature, and it's OK, but I was expecting something more like what Sonos demonstrates on one of their web site videos. There, you can adjust a master volume control and all of the receiver's volumes are adjusted up and down from where they are originally set. Instead, the current sync volume feature sets the receiver volumes to the same setting, which is then adjusted up and down. This results in one or the other receiver being too loud or soft (e.g. Boom vs SBR connected to stereo). First off, thank you for a great program! I have encountered a sync error. Background: Snow Leopard 10.6.1, iPod Touch 3.1.1. iPeng 1.2, SqueezeCenter 7.4 4 Slim Devices - 1 Transporter and 3 SqueezeBox Classics. 3 of these are always in sync and have been for the past 6 months: Master Bedroom SqueezeBox, Living Room Transporter, Kitchen SqueezeBox. While experimenting with your program, I took the Master Bedroom off sync. Using your program, I then put the Master Bedroom back in sync by tapping Kitchen. Your program then showed all three units back in sync and there actually were in sync. I then began to notice, for the first time ever, that periodically I would lose the audio from my Master Bedroom. The info of the song would continue to scroll but nothing came out of the analog outputs. I discovered that every time I would turn off the Kitchen (all three still in sync), within a few minutes, the Master bedroom lost its sound. Repeatable. I then went to my Intel iMac in Local 9000 and took the three units off sync. Then using Local 9000 again, I first put the Master Bedroom in sync with the Living Room and then put the Kitchen in sync with the combined Master Bedroom and Kitchen. Problem solved. I no longer lose the sound in the Master Bedroom when I turn off the Kitchen. Thought you would like to know and experiment with this. Re: [slim] Volume rises very slowly since upgrade
Yes, there was a bug that was referenced in another thread where the controller slowed down as a function of how long it is on due to some SW problem. The scrolling is also affected. This was fixed about last week in 7.4.1. I've been running 7.4.1, and the problem is indeed fixed, and it seems to be pretty stable overall. A way to test if this is your problem is to cycle power on the controller. If the volume responds normally after the restart, then switching to 7.4.1 will fix your problem. -- Mark W Mark W's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17202 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69612 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Replaygain: Strange mp3 tag behaviour
Aztek;470342 Wrote: I've had some success with fixing the problem but still don't understand it. After doing quite a bit of Googling - I found that there is probably some correlation between Ape V2 tags and Lame header information. While I can't display what I was seeing in Foobar - I found by removing all Tag information with Mp3tag, then adding new ID3 tags and then applying replaygain with Foobar - I got the correct settings displayed on my Squeezebox. I tried the above on the Ultravox track in my example and now it is showing -7.51dB in Squeezebox instead of the -14.47dB that was there earlier. Once I had made the changes I rescanned my music and voila - it is all fixed. I don't intend to do this across my entire collection but as tracks come up that sound much lower in volume than the rest - then I will use the above method and tool to get it sorted. I use only mp3gain and aacgain. As you pointed out, there seems to be a bug in the reading of tags. Some posts from earlier this year suggested that mp3gain tags aren't properly read, so SC applies it a second time, which could account for the doubling of the dB adjustment. Non-tagged tracks seem to adjust properly. Just an observation. My workaround is to continue using mp3 and aacgain and just disable the volume adjustment on the controller. -- chitunes chitunes's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29148 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69563 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Andres, (Official Rep), commented 10 days ago Hi guys, We're not ignoring the requests but we've been doing a large of work on mobile, etc over the past months and as a small company we only have limited resources. Working to integrate into 3rd party devices such as Squeezebox takes a huge amount of development and legal/paper work which we simply don't have the time for at the moment. Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore
Thanks for your reply. I am playing AIFF files. In my previous post, I have already listed all the players, the exact sequence of events, and how I solved the problem. I spent a lot of time in figuring out the problem and correcting it. I will not start over again to re-create the problem. No permanent errors and no real big deal. I just wanted to let you know of my experience. Again, thanks for a great program. The time spent maintaining a parallel service will subtract from the time available fixing the bugs in the new service. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68947 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Why sqeezebox
Hello all: I am confused about the popularity of the Squeezebox. I see so many intelligent media center NASs being advertized which claim to stream video and audio to your home stereo. Why/how is the Squeezebox different? For example, Linksys has two products, the media hub and wireless audio device (see links below). Will the Squeezebox offer video support in the future? Are you saying you're surprised that some number of Logitech SMBU's Squeezebox bugs were reported by customers/outsiders? I'm not. I expect that a large percentage of every software vendor's bugs are reported by customers; certainly I've reported my share of bugs that the vendor had previously not been aware of, including to companies as large as Microsoft. These forums are not an official Logitech support channel, so don't be surprised if a Logitech employee asks you to open a bug about something you report here. Logitech staff reading these forums aren't under the same obligations as, say, front-line customer service reps. This is a good thing; if Logitech staff had to file paperwork every time they perceived a problem report or enhancement request here, they'd likely simply stay away from the forums, and that would be a bad thing for Logitech and us. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim AllQuiet BlankSaver ContextMenu FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68947 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Of course the company identifies and tracks bugs. For example, the Shoutcast bug ('Bug 14546' (https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14546)) was filed by mherger, a Logitech employee. Other times users identify bugs and file them. Regardless of who filed the bugs, employees and users are welcome to comment on fixes, submit patches, etc. Users are not *responsible* for this at all, and the vast majority will never visit or even hear of bugs.slimdevices.com. You'll note that I didn't say WustrowO should file a bug report. But for those who are interested, it is there. This is very common in open-source software settings. It may just be an aspect of software like Mozilla/Firefox, Thunderbird, and other programs that you've never been aware of. (It's not a coincidence that the popular bug tracking software is named Bugzilla.) Public bug tracking like this may also exist in closed-source projects, although obviously the scope for participation from those outside the company is far more circumscribed. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68947 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Logitech doesn't talk about future products so for now the answer to video support is no. Sure there are other products that stream audio, stream video, and that stream both. For me it comes down to how much does one want to spend and what one wants it to do for the money. I think Squeezebox excels in price for performance. It only does audio and does it well. Especially if one needs more then one room and more then one type of player. If one is just getting into streaming, I highly recommend taking a step back to see what one actually wants to end up with, then look at all the available quality possibilities. In my opinion, an off the shelf NAS is to be avoided at all costs. They are way over priced and are lacking in performance for what one can buy at half the price in a proper PC selection (whether Desktop, Nano, or Eco). Going with WHS if one just has to have an all in one box is better then going with any NAS IMO (especially if ones music collection is large). Been there done that. My collection out grew both a ReadyNAS NV+ and a Thecus N5200Pro. -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69635 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] scanner.exe *No Disk* hanging on my CDROM drive??!!
I tried searching, sorry if I missed the workaround/fix for this. ENV: Version: 7.3.2 - 24695 @ Mon Jan 19 18:55:04 PST 2009 Operating system: Windows XP - EN - cp1252 Platform Architecture: 586 Perl Version: 5.8.8 - MSWin32-x86-multi-thread MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt Every night I have a scheduled Full Scan. If I have used the DVD-ROM drive that day, the scanner will hang on the empty drive, with this error. My scan doesn't complete: Code: There is no disk in the drive, Please insert a disk into drive D: (cancel) (try again) (continue) Can someone help me understand why scanner.exe got confused into caring about my DVD drive? My scan is specifically set to a different folder on a different drive, and this issue did not occur in the past with past versions. I do not believe I have any links or shortcuts in my E:\FLAC folder that point to D:. I can's seem to get past the dialog box either, because it rolls back my scan and a few minutes later the damn message pops up again. I have to reboot the box to get the scanner to complete without issue, and then the system is only stable until the next time I have to rip a CD, at which point scanner will hang again. Thanks for any help. Thanks, your and Aubuti's comments partially filled in the blanks. I understand that product problems often come from customers, and I understand the difference between a forum and a support channel. It's more the many times I've read an employee tell someone make sure you report this in the system that I found odd. It was almost as if the person was saying I could care less and I'm not going to do anything about it, if it matters to you, you need to act on it. It seemed dismissive to me, and perhaps bordering on rude (there's the tie in to the thread). I guess maybe that's not intended.
