Well, I first transfered my original library and it's all good.
Now I bought a new CD, that I ripped to flac, on the same pc that I use
for that sort of thing, the excact same way as I always do. The rip is
good and I then transfer it, via a USB pen, to the Music folder on my
musicserver. The file shows up in the folder, but when I scan with
Squeezebox Server it does not show?

So, to answer your question: Thats excactly, what I mean.

[slim] Does SoftSqueeze need a mathematical coprocessor

2010-04-07 Thread truehl

Hi folks,
does SoftSqueeze need a mathematical coprocessor like SqueezeSlave? And
if the answer is yes: Does someone know an other player working headless

Thanks for your reply!

No - it is written in Java so if Java runs on your PC then it should
run OK - however it may be slow.

It would be better to describe the symptoms of your problem rather your
diagnosis.

Not sure if the headless question is related to the coprocessor one.
Softqueeze will run headless but the Java libraries requires an Xserver
to be running even though the display is not used.

integrate a player in my SqueezePlug project. SqueezePlug runs on
SheevaPlug. SheevaPlug uses an ARM-Processor without a Coprocessor, so
I can't use SqueezeSlave. SheevaPlug is a complete headless device

SqueezeSlave and it works great. So I'm searching for a player working
on a SheevaPlug.

Maybe you should ask the squeezeslave devs (if you haven't already)?

Re: [slim] Does SoftSqueeze need a mathematical coprocessor

2010-04-07 Thread bpa

signor_rossi you are thinking along the same lines as me. So I'll
explain my question a bit more.

Sheevaplug has no audio out so a cheap USB line out just needs a PCM
stream. Squeezeslave and Softsqueeze by default will have their audio
streams encoded into MP3 or FLAC - this is OK for remote player but for
an integrated players you can disable this and just send WAV (i.e. PCM)
to the player. You can also force SBS to decode flac into WAV so that a
fixed point decoder for flac can be used. I am not sure about MP3 but
since you are in control of the SBS source (i.e. you can patch after
install) - I think MP3 decode by SBS is also possible.

I am pretty sure standard libraries can be built as fixed point or
optimised for ARM as mplayer can do this and it used standard
libraries. A few years ago I played around with mplayer on an ARM with
no FPU. Remember many ARM cores have full 32 bit arithmetic (i.e.
64/48 bit results) which is enough for most audio decodes when compiled
for fixed point.

I wouldn't hold my breath. :) It would be wise to wait for a couple of
days more to see if the new software version is really stable,
especially on MySB.

I wonder what will happen when they open the flood gates and zillions
of Touch units are requesting their initial firmware update all at the
same time. Hopefully they are prepared for that, unlike last Christmas

[slim] Problems rescanning library--mySQL corruption?

This problem started happening very suddenly and for no reason that I
can discern. On my dedicated squeezecenter box I do a daily full

immediately do a full rescan everything is fine. But the daily rescans
give me this set of errors in scanner.log:

According to the Specs, SqueezeCommander should run on this TV.

It will not look exactly pretty, because most of the UI will probably
be to large.
And the usability is currently optimized for touch screens.

I've plans to create a special iPad^H^H^H^H Android *Tablet* version,
that makes use of the larger screen space. ;-)
This Tablet version will also probably fit better for such a large TV

Furthermore, I've added an (experimental) Wake-On-Lan (WOL) support.

Will Android Market see the new version and automatically update?

[slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network

2010-04-07 Thread vernavideo

Hi,
Been reading various posts on vortexbox and SBS on NAS but it is still
not too clear to me which would be the best set-up for my own needs.

So far, the sbs is running on a sysnology ds 107+ (package not ssods),
feeding 2 sb v3 and a boom. performance from the players is ok, I
guess, except some rare glitches and the occasional slow responsiveness
of the units (especially with the boom), but something I can live with.
Where it becomes really annoyng is when I need to work on the server.
the web page takes ages to load and every action takes 5-10 seconds
before the web page is refreshed. took me almost a whole afternoon to
set up the display on the boom the way I wanted
Another big disavantage is that synology takes its time before
releasing new packages, and you cannot update to the latest stable
build via the sbs interface. the same applies to plug-ins.

So I started looking around for alternatives like the vortexbox or the
sbs on the sheevaplug. Vortexbox seems the ideal candidate, thanks to
the ripping facilities, and the fact that I already have a spare
shuttle XPc which seems to be a good candidate for such a solution.

However, I really like the NAS idea of a central repository of all
family files, and in that respect, the 107+ works really well, so (if
it is possible), I would like to keep the actual music files in the NAS
which I am able to access from anywhere, even on my iphone, thanks to
the recent DS iphone apps, and I would not like the idea of fidling
with the vb to have the same kind of functionalities, not to mention
the hassle of reconfiguring all PCs (lost count I many we have in the
house).

-Is it difficult to configure both the vb and the nas to read and
stores files on the nas as opposed to the vb itself?
-Is it possible to keep the double saving mp3/flac when music is saved
in the nas as opposed to the vb internal hd?
-any performance issues when using the vb as a player as well? is it
going to congestionate the (100mb/sec) lan with the large files having
to go back and forward the lan?

In fact, will I see any performance increase over my current set-up?
the vb will be installed on an old 2GHz athlon shuttle pc.

Many thanks in advance,

Stefano

Thanks!

If you select My Downloads in the Android Market App, it should offer
you the update.
Well, it may take some hours until the new version appears there
because of the caching of the Market App...

I am not completely sure about this, but I think it will not. If you
buy a Touch I think you will need to. If you want it, I think you have
to go to the website and start a download. Once you have 7.5 installed,
it will ask you if you want the latest update when other 7.5.x versions
are available though.

I was in the Beta Branch so I had to go out and get it, there was no
auto upgrade path in the Beta Branch except inside a specific 7.x path.

AFAIK, there's no special SP build for Ubuntu NBR, but you can download

[slim] SB3 vs. Duet

2010-04-07 Thread DavidPHumes

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum!

I have been slowly putting together a stereo for the last 6 months or
so. I have all of the big components but as of now have been using my
laptop as my source. It works just fine, but is cumbersome and
obviously not well integrated. What I want is something like a
Squeezebox to stream everything wirelessly (I have a server loaded with
FLAC anyway) and create a more integrated system. First off, my system
as it stands now:

Peachtree Audio Decco
McIntosh MC2205
Magenepan MMG
Cardas Tweeter Attenuators
Paul Speltz Anti-Cables

[image: http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/David343/IMG_8190.jpg]

I'm a college student right now and work at Best Buy. I get an
excellent accommodation through Logitech as a Best Buy employee and the
price of a Duet and SB3 (off of, say, eBay) is about equal. After
browsing the forums for the last couple days, I've noticed most people
have the SB3 despite the fact it is significantly older. Is there a
good reason for this? I'm not really worried about the DAC as my preamp
has a very good built in DAC that I will be using anyway. I sit about 10
feet from my stereo so I really don't need to have a screen on the
remote, but it would be cool I'll admit. I also don't really have any
need right now for Internet music streaming, so I don't mind if that
functionality it not present. What is the communities general opinion
on this?

Or, should I wait for the Touch (ha)?

If you're going to use an external DAC then it probably doesn't matter
which one you go with. The only other differences would be the display
on the SB3, and also you can control other devices with an SB3 using an
IR Blaster.

Both have identical functionality as far as Internet streaming goes, as
that's actually handled by the server software.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Unbuntu not recognising music folder

2010-04-07 Thread cooppw02

What I believe is happening here is that when you insert the pen drive
into the Linux machine, it's being mounted with permissions that are
too strict for SBS to use them. When you copy the files to your
server, the files keep those strict permissions. I believe the
solution is to either run that command every time you copy music from
the pen drive, OR I believe that changing how the drive is mounted
might solve your problems once and for all. You'll have to make some
changes to your fstab. What is the filesystem on the pen drive?

The Duet can't directly access an external hard drive - it has to

The Squeezebox Touch can do what you describe. It can play files

Re: [slim] Newbie setup questions

2010-04-07 Thread tcutting

Just a bit more information:
The squeezebox system requires a Server. If you don't need to access
your own music stored locally, you can use the Logitech provided
servers at mysqueezebox.com. Using that you can access internet radio,
as well as the various streaming services (depending on your location)
such as Last FM, Pandora, etc.
If you want to access your own, locally stored music, you will need to
run your own server, Squeezeboxserver. It can be run on a PC (Mac,
Windows, Linux). It can also be run on some Network Attached Storage
devices (NAS), but these typically don't have much computer processing
power and as a result don't typically perform as well. Some people
choose to setup a dedicated server... could use an older PC which is
somewhat obsolete, or could be purpose built - Vortexbox offers a
pre-built system which has squeezeboxserver pre-installed, has built-in
ripping capability, and is based on a low-power Linux PC. I have a
cheap Atom PC running Ubuntu Linux with Squeezeboxserver, and also
serves as a file server for my Desktop PC and Laptop.
Finally, the Squeezebox Touch was just (finally) released today - it is
a squeezebox player which also has a slightly slimmed down version
of the Squeezeboxserver built in, which allows you to connect a USB
drive to it with your music files and it can become your music server
for it and other Squeezebox hardware throughout your house.

I would order a Touch. It gives you 24/96 native, is the latest and

what I would do with your setup.

Question: how is the fireplace and wall cutout affecting the Maggies
soundstage?I think that's what I'm going to do now that it was finally
 released...

The Maggies are adversely affected if too close but they're almost 3.5
feet from the wall so they're more than isolated enough from their
surrounds. Soundstage is fantastic. I plan to get treatments at some
point but thus is college...

N97 has a nice WiFi, so it could be lot better than an IR remote.
Anyway yes, would be great to have one :)

You need to have SqueezeBox Server running someplace like on a PC or a
VortexBox Appliance NAS.

Yes, but the OP isn't describing an external USB hard drive, he is
describing a NAS. The Touch's built-in SBS will not access libraries on
a NAS.

Re: [slim] SB3 vs. Duet

2010-04-07 Thread eeagle

I have both. Each has its advantages. If you plan to use an external
DAC both should provide an equal digital audio signal. The Duet
Controller shows album art and is of course rf which are pluses. The
SB3/Classic has an IR remote that I actually like better, simply
because I can get directly to an alphabetical selection at the push of
a button rather than scrolling which takes a while on the duet if one
has many albums. The real clincher though is the neat VU Meter
screen saver the Classic has, that reminds me of the old receivers of
days gone bythe transporter has these as well.

I can't speak to any of your specific issues; but no problems here with
Windows 7 x64. Specifically a fresh install not an upgrade.
