[slim] TuneIn users in the UK - help

Could UK users of Tunein confirm that their Local settings are
accurate?

I have set mine to Newcastle - but all I get is a listing of UK

Re: [slim] Treble distortion

My Pandora feeds are pretty good, considering. For a while I was using
the XM plug-in -- and I was having the HF distortion mentioned above.
I upgraded my receiver to a Denon AVR-3808CI with built-in XM. Problem
gone.

The OP has really fine speakers but the 4 ohm impedence may be a
problem for his Sony -- causing the shutdown problem. Any chance of
trying an alternate receiver that is known to be OK with 4 ohm?

[slim] How can I have albums sorted chronologically?

2011-12-15 Thread Kvaks

I'll take an interest in any device, any plugin, any skin that can do
this: Select an artist/band and have their albums sorted
chronologically.

It seems such a simple feature, yet I can find it nowhere in the
Squeezebox universe (that I've tried) nor in many other media player
software for that matter. I guess I'm crazy for prefering chronological
sorting.

I'm currently using the web interface and SqueezeCommander to control
my squeezeboxes. Both only give alphabetical sorting of an artist's
albums. Erland of plugin fame suggested it might be possible with
CustomBrowse and one of the CB WebUI skins, but CustomBrowse (which I
have) seems to be made of XML-nightmares and it's not something I think
I can manage to tinker with, so I'm looking for other options.

Actually, SqueezeCommander should sort albums of an artist by year.
That's even the default, but it can be changed to have the albums
sorted alphabetically (Settings / Sort Albums by Name).

Please make sure that Sort Albums by Name is NOT enabled in
SqueezeCommander's Settings.

If it is not enabled, but the albums are still not sorted by year,
please drop me a line, because that would be a bug.

That's quite easily done with the default web ui skin and several other

I can see how that would be cumbersome for people with huge
collections, as the grouping (not the sorting) is by albums rather than
artists. But I find it works great with my modest collection of about

I wasn't using the latest version of SqueezeCommander, but updated now

main built in menus, nowhere else. I understand what you say about
CustomBrowse, but is it possible to use chronological sorting when
accessing through Browse by Selected? I don't ever use the main menus
(they're too slow to scroll through when you have 3000 albums), but I
very often use the Browse by Selected feature (by, say, press and hold
on a song or an album and pick Artist: ... in the pop up menu).

BTW, kudos for not using -reverse- chronological order (newest first),
which many do.

[slim] Best Squeezebox alternative that supports 24/192?

2011-12-15 Thread lovemov

Have been with Squeezeboxes for many years now, I think I will finally
move on. Well, I still love my SB3 and SBT and keep them in separate
setup. But for the main stereo setup, I'd like to explore something new
and capable.

What I need is reasonable priced (I'd say less than $1500), streaming
as good as SB/SBT, and with low jitter 24/192 digital output capability
(if can do 24/284 is even better), an outboard DAC will be used.

I was looking at Linn DS series, but they are so overpriced, and most
of the cost goes to build-in DAC/Amp etc which I really don't care.

Please post your opinion and thoughts.

Re: [slim] How can I have albums sorted chronologically?

2011-12-15 Thread InTheBath

I wanted this for a while and a problem with compilation albums (I tag
each songs original release year) meant that it didn't work
satifactorarilily.
I bit the bullet and entered an ALBUMSORT tag which means everything is
chronological within each artist, exactly as I wanted and I think as you
desire.

My albumsort tag was firstly made by copying the YEAR tags from track 1
of the non-VA albums and the highest value from the Various Artist
albums. I then went through and updated the oddities - mostly from
people who released two albums a year. I went for 2011a and 2011b for
example.

It's simple. In the main menu (on the web ui, SB Duet Controller,
iPeng, probably SqueezeCommander, etc) go to My Music Albums. You get
a list of albums. I think the default sorting is by album title across
all artists (yuck!), but there are options to sort by Artist / Year or
Artist / Year / Album, which is essentially what you are asking for.

The main difference is that in album browsing the unit of observation
is an album, instead of an artist. So when browsing albums you get a
very flat presentation of your library, just as if the physical disks
were arranged on a shelf. Even though each line is an album, the
_sorting_ can be by Artist / Year (in chronological order, not reverse
chronological). When browsing by artists (which is what I think you're
saying you want), you would browse artists and then go a level deeper
to see the individual albums.

Is that clearer?

2011-12-15 Thread lovemov

Hmm, seems an interesting product.
Looks like the Vortexbox software can be installed onto self-built PC
so it can be fan less?

While the primary goal to have SB/SBT in the system is to prevent from
using any HTPC concept. I honestly can't tell the different between
24/96 and 24/192 for most recordings, however, the jitter produced by
SBT indeed can be heard using a good DAC. So the purpose is not only
for a 24/192 capable digital transport, more importantly, for a lower
jitter transport.

Re: [slim] Best Squeezebox alternative that supports 24/192?

2011-12-15 Thread garym

Correct about installing VB on silent PC (e.g., FitPC). You might post
on the vortexbox forums (although Andrew posts here as well) asking
about the VB Player issue when running on something other than a VBA.
I'd assume this is not hardware dependent but not sure.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2011-12-15 Thread db122

FWIW, a 1.0.1 update was pushed out to address two crash reports from
the market. Might take a bit to become available.

If anyone tries this product and doesn't like it, I will issue refunds
outside of the 15-minute mandated Android window.

You should be asking Google :D
I unfortunately cannot be of any help here - it's Google that must
provide the full Android Stack (i.e. running x86 native code) on Google
TV.
I need the native code for fast FLAC decoding.

SqueezePlayer in the meantime even runs on the O2 Joggler (running on
Android) , so this proves that it works fine on x86 / Intel based
devices.

I did find this site though, that claims (with some hacking) to provide
NDK support for GTV.
http://gtvhacker.com/index.php/GTv-OS_(AndroidTV)#NDK_Support

You need to root GTV for this to work though, so quite an adventure I
guess.

Sometimes after it craps out you will see a wipe and re-scan option
You can do that too as it will clear your cache and do a re-scan of ALL
files, so it may take a while...

Re: [slim] 7.7.1 not rescanning

2011-12-15 Thread Apesbrain

If you installed LMS on a Windows PC it will have created a Control
Panel icon on your desktop. (Probably the same for Mac OS or linux
but I don't have experience with those.) Open that application and go
to the Advanced tab. Toward the bottom of the tab there is a section
called Cleanup. Check the box next to Clean cache folder,
including... and push the Run Cleanup button. If you get a message
about LMS needing to be stopped, go to the first tab and click the
Stop Logitech Media Server button. Return to the Advanced tab and
push Run Cleanup again. It takes a few minutes to complete the
deletion. When you restart LMS -- or reboot your server -- it will
rescan your library.

Even easier: on the first tab of the Control Panel application is a
section called Media Scan Details. Change the drop-down to Clear
library and rescan everything and hit the Rescan button.

Please post back with results.

Re: [slim] 7.7.1 not rescanning

2011-12-15 Thread Apesbrain

Can you provide more information about your setup?

- Are you running LMS on a PC, NAS, plug computer?
- What operating system?
- What CPU?
- How much RAM?
- Is your library on an internal hard drive or external USB?
- How many tracks are in your library?

Not that LMS is particularly picky about all these things but it helps
visualize exactly what we're working with.

I tried it, but quickly found that it's lacking too many features
compared with SqueezeCommander. It has a nice look and feel to it,

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2011-12-15 Thread db122

Thanks for the feedback Kvaks and thanks also for giving us a shot.
Yours is the first outside feedback that we have received so it is
particularly valuable.

If you don't mind telling us what features you miss then we would
appreciate it. In my day-to-day use, Orange Squeeze serves my needs
but certainly I am just one user. I have resisted using
SqueezeCommander, or any of the other apps (including even the free
Logitech app!), because I didn't want to fall into a copy-cat
mentality. So I guess that my request for clarification is somewhat of
a dichotomy. I'm torn, to be honest. :-)

Anyway, this started out as -- and continues to be -- a learning
process... and that process is not over with 1.0 (or 1.0.1). Certainly
the price point we chose reflects the fact that we know (well, suspect
that we know) where our app lies in a direct side-by-side comparison.

I do want to make sure that you don't feel that you were misled in our
market description. Were there features mentioned that you feel were
not in the product?

Ben

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2011-12-15 Thread Michael Herger
Ben,

I like your approach of ignoring the others :-). And I must agree that
users will always miss some functionality - sometimes less is more.
Competition is a good thing.

I gave Orange Squeeze a quick spin. I won't compare it to other apps (I
see pros and cons for all of them, including yours), but give some some
feedback none the less:

- first of all: nice job. Discovered my servers/players quickly. No fuzz
setting it up. Basic jobs like browsing, player control etc. work fine.

- I like the concept of being able to select the target for every action.

- I like the album preview icons for artists. Would it be possible to
have it the full icon size if there's only one album for an artist? And
while we're at it... you could pull in some random artist artwork from
last.fm if no album artwork for an artist was available...

- as you mentioned the Kindle Fire as compatible, I tried to install it
there first. But I couldn't find the app neither on Amazon's store nor in
SlideMe. Further feedback based on running it on an Acer Iconia (HTC
Desire failing to download it this morning?)

- first time I browsed the Music Folder, it failed to browse a sub-folder,
but would always jump back to the main folder. Might be an issue only
showing while it was still waiting for the full list?

- Apps and Internet Radio icons look poor, like jaggy, small jpegs
rescaled, while album artwork etc. is good. I see from the server log that
you're pulling in the original file, which would be 512x512 png. Where are
the artefacts introduced?

- At some point I got it into a odd state: I switched to controlling a
different player connected to a different server. But still I would see
the old server/player's App menu, eg. apps which are not available from
the new server. Selecting one of them would return an empty menu, then
jump to the Now Playing screen.

- just got the you can go to the Now Playing activity message: I would
try to avoid tech speech. Most non-devs probably don't know what an
activity is on a phone ;-).

Unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the app store: started the
update on the Acer, installation on the HTC, but download is failing.
Thus can't continue the testing...

Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the next steps.

Michael

 Hi everyone.

It's been quite awhile since I've had occasion to visit these forums,
but now I'm pleased to announce the release of Orange Squeeze, our
Android remote control for Logitech Media Server Squeezebox devices.
You all know the drill, so I'll just include the link.

The app is $0.99 so I'll be retiring soon. :-) We're very happy to have
the initial release completed in time for a restful holiday break. See
 you in the new year!

Re: [slim] Best Squeezebox alternative that supports 24/192?

If you used a VortexBox Appliance and a SOtM USB to SPDIF converter you
would have extremely lower jitter and up to 24/384 playback capability.
That is what we use for testing in our lab here.

http://shop.smallgreencomputer.com/SOtM-USB-Digital-Interface-SOtM-USB.htm

You may also be able to get good playback with VortexBox running on
other hardware and a different USB to SPDIF converter.
