Re: [slim] 7.7.1 on Linux keeps telling me a new version is available

2011-12-19 Thread DK_Dennis

I've just noticed the same..

Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.1 - r33735
Operating system: SuSE - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: x86_64-linux
Perl Version: 5.12.3 - x86_64-linux-thread-multi
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.34_01 (sqlite 3.7.7.1)

Running on 64-bit OpenSUSE 11.4

Other than this, I've had no trouble with the new version.
I always uninstall the older version, before I install the new(est)
version of the application.

The message goes away for a while, if I:
/etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver stop
/etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver start

So far I haven't been able to figure out what triggers the message to
come back, but I'll post that information here, should I be
enlightened..

[slim] Using squeezebox remote via NAS

2011-12-19 Thread onemeg

Hi;

I run the media server on a NAS and from there I run a Touch, Boon and
a Roku R1001 which is emulating squeezebox player.

Everything is working well.

I'm thinking of buying a squeezebox remote (i.e. just the remote unit)
and want to check whether there's any reason I'll have any issues in
using it with the above hardware configuaration?

cheers

Re: [slim] Using squeezebox remote via NAS

2011-12-19 Thread Soulkeeper

Do you mean the 'Squeezebox Controller'

As long as you've got a standard wireless network (802.11g or 802.11N,
preferably with WPA encryption) and run a normal 'LMS'
installation on your NAS, and your NAS is on the same subnet as your
wireless access point, there shouldn't be any problems.

Yes that's the one (controller wise) and yes, I run the LMS on a

Yes all will be on the same subnet so all sounds promising!

[slim] Probably asked many times....convert wired SB3 to wireless?

2011-12-19 Thread jimwillsher

Hi all,

I've frequented these forums since buying my first Squeezebox, about 6
years ago, and I vaguely remember this question being asked a few
times...but I seem unable to find the threads when I need them :-)

I've just bought a Slim Devices branded SB3 (to go alongside my other
three Slim/Logitech boxes) The one I've just bought (ebay) is NOT the
wireless one. Can anyone remind me if it's possible (and easy) to
upgrade it to the wireless version? Is there a specific wireless card
that is required, and if so does anyone have a quick guide or some
URLs? I'm in the UK. I do have a spare Intel wifi card floating around
(from a Dell laptop) but I've no idea if that's the right unit for use
in the SB3 Classic.

Many thanks,

Jim

You should be asking Google :D
I unfortunately cannot be of any help here - it's Google that must
provide the full Android Stack (i.e. running x86 native code) on Google

I need the native code for fast FLAC decoding.

SqueezePlayer in the meantime even runs on the O2 Joggler (running on
Android) , so this proves that it works fine on x86 / Intel based
 devices.

I did find this site though, that claims (with some hacking) to provide
 NDK support for GTV.
 http://gtvhacker.com/index.php/GTv-OS_(AndroidTV)#NDK_Support

You need to root GTV for this to work though, so quite an adventure I
 guess.

Looks like the Better terminal emulator pro author got this to work
with static library linking.

I'd love to see SqueezePlayer on the Revue. ;)

[slim] Plugins v. cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins

2011-12-19 Thread cliveb

What's the difference between these two directories:

/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/Plugins
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins

I'm experimenting with LMS 7.7.1 on Ubuntu 11.10, and there are two old
plugins I want to use that are not in the default set: OtherPlayers
and PowerSwitchII. I started off by putting them both into
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins, and they
worked fine. But then every time I went to the Plugins page on the web
interface, it popped up the box that asks for a server restart. I then
noticed on my old installation (7.3.2 on Ubuntu 8.10) that
PowerSwitchII was in /var/lib/squeezecenter/Plugins. So I moved it to
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/Plugins on LMS 7.7.1 and now everything is
fine and that box no longer pops up.

So I don't have a problem - I'm just curious what causes this
difference in behaviour.

You could just manually copy the files to the updates directory and
restart LMS .

But that wont work as 7.7.1 or the 7.7.2 repo has the latest files .

9558 is the latest I see .
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.7.1/

But should it not be Firmware: 7.7.1-r9561

My own updates directory have 9558 but both my Touch players reports
9561 ?

However mysqueezebox.com reports that i can install 9558 so it migth
work anyway ?

A friend of mine have a Motorola Xoom, which he likes, but I don't
think it has the latest Android version.

Are some manufacturers better than others regarding offering upgrades
of the Android OS ? Or is all pretty bad so you basically have to get
new hardware if you want the latest Android version ?

[slim] Media Streaming Holy Grail

2011-12-19 Thread cdeford

I'm new to Squeezebox and media streaming in general, and I'm really
enjoying my new Radio, but it's not the complete music streaming
solution because it leaves out one important (to me) element - the
abilty to stream and play music videos.

Is there a device anywhere - I don't mean custom built networks costing
an arm and a leg - that can do it all? Stream both audio and video to
the same player, with an attached screen big enough to make viewing
video worthwhile? I haven't been able to find any yet.

I know you can put together something yourself, I used to have a WDTV
player hooked up to my TV but it was hardly the most elegant solution.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-12-19 Thread rpress

My understanding of the thread, it seems like if your app is compiled
with that modified NDK, and statically linked, that it will work
without any modifications or root to the Revue. I looked at the
Better Terminal Emulator Pro app in the market and it says it
supports Google TV and does not require root.

I didn't have any luck with the official NDKr6.x86 (couldnt get it to

And of course it works, that is how Better Terminal Emulator Pro is
 working on Google TV.

Ok, downloading the two files
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.7.1/boom_57.bin and
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.7.1/squeezebox2_137.bin
into the updates folder and restarting the service has achieved nothing.
The files have gone, but apparently there's a new version of Logitech

I'll leave it, and watch out in the forums for 7.7.2 appearing. Thanks

Buy one of the new wireless N adapters for Tivos. I use one on our

The are quite easy find used on Craigslist or Amazon.

True! I would never have considered the 7 device as my first (and final)

too... I would never have thought so.

If I've understood correct, HTC has some issue with the Logitech

The HTC issue is fixed now. But they have a poor track-record about breaking

receiver et al.

A friend of mine have a Motorola Xoom, which he likes, but I don't

I think there's only one device with the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version:
Samsung's reference phone. And that's probably your best bet if you want to be
future proof: get whatever Google uses to announce something new. It's most
likely to be the device which will get longest support.

I've been burnt with the HTC Desire: while they do offer an update to 2.3, it's
only considered a developer's edition, not for the end-user. Which means: I can
develop/test for the Desire 2.3, but most users will never use this
combination. The Acer Iconia got updated from 3.0 to 3.2 within minutes after I
had set it up.

Jim/Mnyb - I think you're mixing things up. The message Jim is seeing is about

been two different issues for both of these, but they were totally independent.

Jim - please enable debugging for server.update, and wait another day. Could
you then please check your server.log for any information about the update

When I switched the impedence in the Sony's menu to 4 ohm, the shutdown
problem disappeared. The unit sounds very good most of the time, but I
still have occasional distortion in the very high vocal registers. When

so I'm concluding it's a Pandora thing. Maybe I should write/call

I don't think so. Tablet screens aren't very good and have poor sound
so they're not very good as players. Netbook sound is also poor without
speakers and you don't want a netbook in every room just to play video.
They're a long way from being an 'all-in-one' solution. Ideally it
would be something like the Touch but with a bigger screen, decent
speakers and obviously capable of playing video.

that the Squeezebox lineup is still alive and well and there is some
semblance of sanity prevailing at Logitech HQ. :-).

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2011-12-19 Thread bluegaspode

Hi Ben,

just gave your App a go and have to say I really like it!
It's a well thought of UI and I'm 'feeling home' instantly.
It's also a very good quality for a first release (sent you a crash
report, but had it only once).

You have a very different style compared to SqueezeCommander (which is
good).
Also I love that your App (for some reason I don't know yet) feels
'simpler' than SqueezeCommander which took me a bit longer to get used
to (it took me some time to get warm with the iPeng-iPhone navigation
style, that SqueezeCommander copied).

I don't think that you need to 'hide' behind SqueezeCommander with your
price level, you do have a valid alternative and users will need to
decide what style they like most.

If I find some time (guess only after new years eve though), I'll be
adding support for your App in SqueezePlayer.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2011-12-19 Thread pippin

Hi,

I've given it a try to and I have to second bluegaspode's finding:
impressive quality for a first release.
One more member in the club of people who believe horizontal swiping is
a useful means of organizing pages :)

I also like some details like how the new NowPlaying information slides
in when you change a player, taking care of details is always so cool!

It's obviously not for my device, though.
The layout is nice and gives a visible clue of where you are and gives
you quick access to the player controls and the current track.
This is certainly fine for a large-screen device like one of those
Android-monster-phones with 4.3-Displays that recently came out or for
a tablet, but on my Xperia Mini pro there's almost no space for content
left, when I use Search (where I have to use landscape since that's
where the view rotates to when I open the keyboads), there's only a
single line left for results which makes me feel a bit like on the
Squeezebox Classic.
In portrait it shows four rows which still feels like you want a
full-screen mode or something.

A few details:
* I don't like the breadcrumbs. Maybe that's my small device again but
they always only show the current menu level plus ... and I find
taking up 1/3rd of a row just to let me know that this is not a top
level menu a waste of space, a single symbol would have done,
especially since at least in portrait the tradeoff usually is that the
menu level gets truncated.

* For Apps I haven't found a way to do anything else but play single
tracks, is this not ready, yet, or a bug? These tracks (unlike the
menus where it's fine) also don't show artwork, at least for Spotify.

* When waiting up from sleep it takes _very_ long to reconnect to WiFi
and the server, might be my device.

* The player overview with the volume bars flickers the handle and
shows changing volume for some of my players even if nothing happens.

* I sometimes get an erroneous loading... message at the bottom of
the screen.

* It sometimes loses the connection to the server and I have to kill
and restart it then.

Yes, indeed and it will be part of this product rather than a second,
tablet-specific version. I was originally planning on supporting both
for the initial release but I had to pare my own expectations back.
The only problem with running it on a tablet now is that you are simply
wasting huge amounts of screen real-estate.

In case it need be said, the $0.99 price point for a niche app like
this is primarily to make sure that folks who are looking for Winamp
don't download the app and rate it one star because of the confusion.
That said, every dollar counts and I do appreciate the donations,
because I'm quite confident that all of you are already running
SqueezeCommander.

Pippin, thanks so much for the detailed write-up. I should be paying
you guys. ;-) OK, well I already did a few years back when I purchased
iPeng.

You are correct -- I did not really do any significant testing on a
device with your characteristics. I developed on a Nexus One and tested
on a G1 (similar to yours in form factor), but really just a functional
test rather than a usability test. With your device it might be best to
simply get rid of the top bar altogether when browsing. When searching
in landscape mode, I'm not sure that there's much to be done at all. No
top bar would help a bit, but not much.

By the way, I'm a huge believer in reasonably-sized phones so I'm not
simply writing off your feedback at all.

I will do some more testing with Spotify as well, a service I actually
haven't used. Your experience should be considered a bug, not an
incomplete feature. I actually didn't launch with any known bugs, or I
would have launched in June! (just kidding)

I have cataloged all of your issues and will investigate them! Thanks!

By the way, I'm a huge believer in reasonably-sized phones so I'm not

Well, I'm not even sure it's reasonably sized because so much stuff
doesn't work well on it.
However, already having an iPhone I didn't want another, similarly
sized brick as a second phone let alone an even bigger one) so it came
in handy. I'm tempted to upgrade to the never one they have now because
it comes with a full on-screen-keyboard instead of the slide-out thing

It's actually not just Spotify but all Apps I've tried.

One more thing (sorry): with all the information permanently on the

NowPlaying (I _know_, iPeng is the same for menus,... yet) so I keep
playing on the wrong device.

What you cant do is to purge squeezeboxserver after you installed LMS

But better confirm with someone with firsthand knowledge of recent

Re: [slim] Ran a rescan and lost all music

2011-12-19 Thread Mnyb

re computer literate , why run the server on a NAS ? It is easier and
more user friendly on a real computer, on the other hand if you persist
you will becomme computer literate ;)

I'm sure their are other ready NAS user with better ideas, I run
another kind of server .

But what you should learn is how to get to the server.log and
scanner.log files

they are in the /var/log/squeezeboxserver/ directory of your NAS you
can read parts of them trough the links on the settings page ,directly
in your browser .
otherwise putty or winscp is friendly apps to use from the pc.

If the scanner crashes it can leave information in scanner.log or
server.log

In squeezeboxservers advanced settings there is logging settings, here
you can rise the level of logging, this is good if you plan to send the
files to someone.

btw if you go to artists in the menu is it really only 2 artists ?

Does it ever finish scanning or do you get an aborted message ?

Re: [slim] Help with 7.7.1

2011-12-19 Thread STEVESPUR

Ok, thanks

Just after I posted I attempted a re-scan that has got stuck on the
first track again - opening server notes below:

The item

then gets repeated hundreds of times...

Re: [slim] Treble distortion

2011-12-19 Thread Mnyb

When I switched the impedence in the Sony's menu to 4 ohm, the shutdown
problem disappeared. The unit sounds very good most of the time, but I
still have occasional distortion in the very high vocal registers. When
I play my iTunes library through the Touch, I don't hear any distortion
 so I'm concluding it's a Pandora thing. Maybe I should write/call
 them.

...Thats why you should have your own files if quality is a concern :)
99.9998 % of the user base would not recognize sq if it bit them in
thier behind.

Note that 128k will not be artifact free, and you hear it if it is a
quality recording.

Lossy compression is even less good on embedded devices with small cpu
and no fpu unit, so the decoders has some compromises.

Is it possible to have the server transcode pandora ? Or does the app
block this, a worthwhile experiment

Re: [slim] Treble distortion

2011-12-19 Thread Mnyb

Is not the amp a limiting factor if it goes to protection that easy ?

Normally you don't hear amps that much when they work properly .

But you sure do when you get close to thier operational limits be it
power,voltage,current or whatever.

Some amps dislike the reactive nature of some difficult speakers.

Re: [slim] 7.7.1 on Linux keeps telling me a new version is available

2011-12-19 Thread jimwillsher

This has given me a good excuse to reinstall my system. It's a Hyper-V
VM, so only an hour's work, but I'll start from scratch and report
back. Many thanks for the assistance everyone.
