The reason we think a solution based on a central service is bad is because Logitech haven't been able to ensure its reliability. Well yes of-course, I sugesting that what can be done locally should be , some subscription services are another matter . I think you and the other programmers may be better than me to find the balance . My thinking was if a third party steps in and run a future mysb.com replacement it will not be as powerfull and have logitechs resources , but most end users have cpu power in abundance at home . So doing things locally to not bog down the service . I can see the practical reasons for logitech as they do it now to keep most services at mysb.com even if they could be local ,as you say maintenance is easier . But that may be an expensive solution if done on hobby basis . I was also thinking about the legacy players that are more server dependent . But sure some things can be done locally in the Touch or Radio too, for example a local alarm code and ntp to get time from somewhere not mysb.com or local server . If someone forks the code , I can see long standing bugfixes comming too :) some that are not even considered during the current regime . So it is not all bad . [slim] Squeezebox Longivity
OK, so I'm now very interested in keeping my soon-to-be irreplaceable Squeezeboxes alive and kicking for as long as possible. It's been my impression that the 1st component to go is often the wifi card. I've seen bad wifi cards render more than one Squeezebox dead. In fact, a friend took delivery today from ebay of a SB2 that was DOA. After removing the wifi card, it started right up and is working perfectly now as a wired SB2. I gather that finding replacement wifi cards is getting harder and harder as the required component is really not stocked anywhere now. What do folks think? For those of us who can stay wired, should we be prophylactically removing the wifi cards from our SBs? Should I yank the wifi card out of my Transporter? I've been running it wired for years now. What other ideas do folks have about extending the life of this gear? gharris999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=115 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96228 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Dim the displays . And keep it in a cool but not freezing environment ,heat kill all electronics i think component life is a square function of temperature or similar . As far as I understand it: - Logitech no longer offer Squeezeboxes for sale - mysqueezebox.com will continue for the foreseeable future - LMS is still available for download - Squeezebox Radio now rebranded/reversioned as UE Smart Radio, SBRs may be upgraded/downgraded (depending on perception) to UE Smart Radio. No other SBs will be upgradable in that way. - there's a new UE version of mysqueezebox.com, only UE devices will work with it. - There is UE Server software (I think versioned from LMS) for playing local music is available for Mac/PC, requires access to internet to control players - Only one UE player, the Smart Radio, announced so far. I supect that none of us fossils playing local files would like UE anyway as it must have contact with ther UE online service to play local files ? This is done to get rid of the switching back and forth between local server and online server that many newbs find confusing ,by simply only have the online server as control point. Even if your local UE server feeds tunes in the background . Re: [slim] Squeezebox Longivity
I have only had one unit fail in 10 years, and that was a Touch that was in my conservatory which gets warm in summer, so heat is the killer. Even then, it was only the display that broke so the unit still played music. I've had to replace quite a few PSU's, but these are easy to come by and I usually replace with more robust ones. I guess the obvious is to unplug the player if it is not going to be used for long periods (say a week) but I would not unplug if I used daily because that just creates more thermal expansion stress from heating up and cooling down. Setting the 'powered off' screen saver to blank, and dimming the display whenever you can will help. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96228 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I agree with Mnyb on the VFD displays, keep them dim(er) or even OFF (set to dark) for continuous play. My Boom SB3 are set to Dark for Idle use, I change this to Brightest if company is here and seems interested in seeing the display. I too have been spooked by the reports of Boom issues, mostly WiFi cards woofer degradation display issue. Yet my four year old Boom runs 24/7 about ten months a year via WiFi in a garage environment involving hot humid summers and very cold dry winters (gets down to 0 F), not a problem yet. But I couldn't find anything that did exactly what I wanted, everything else just seemed to be lacking something and priced way above what I would be able to invest. I've not seen anything that has come out since I got my Touch to change the outlook of that either, so I picked up another Touch so that I'll have a spare. Been meaning to do that for a while, but was waiting to see if by some magical chance they did an upgraded Touch that might be better, but no. So got one from Amazon while I could, and will be watching sales in case they do any wild markdowns to maybe pick up another one. Weird times... I guess I should download a couple of versions of LMS to keep as backups just in case. Yep , using it's digital out it's pretty much the only thing you need :) in any system at any price level at no loss in SQ ( other than imagined in the flat earth of audiophiledom ) . Those expensive hifi branded streamers are not giving you much for the money unless you fancy something with an built in high quality dac and can live with all their limitations . But the future belongs to things with digital inputs , so a player with analog output is an anachronism , considering that nowadays even the lowly ht receiver has very good dacs and SQ frighteningly close to the real things in good hifi (and far better than the voodoo designs ) . So a streamer with this feature set is going to missed in the market :-/ But given time and if someone finds the niche viable for business someone else will invent a new product but it can take some time , i'll bet it will be a bit more expensive thou , squeezebox amazing price/performance ratio is hard to beat they expected mass market sale and geared for that when manufacturing and pricing the squeezeboxes . Another product may aim directly at a smaller niche with less expectations on mass sale and choose differently , the hifi market demands a certain priceness and looks with heavy aluminium chassis etc ;) Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Keep the spirit up guys; just bought a new Radio and used Receiver
There seems to be a lot of (understandable) frustration and insecurity about the latest move made by Logitech. People seem unsure about what to do; staying on board and see what happens, others perhaps jumping the ship hoping that some other platform will fulfill their needs for a longer period of time. I for one rely on the power of this community and hope fantastic guys like Erland and Pippin can provide us with a system that serves our needs for the coming years. I've decided that local music is the only thing that's really important to me. So before the stocks of current Radios are gone, I've just bought myself a brand new SBR to add to my collection. Furthermore I found a guy on ebay that sold a couple of Receivers at a very good price, wanted to buy two from him, but he had only one left. And I'm considering to buy a new Touch before they run out, but I'm not sure at this time. Let's see how prices develop the coming weeks. If this isn't about having faith in the community, I don't know what is. Buying two systems of which you know at least one of them will not be supported if I ever wanted to make the switch to the UE-platform, not something you would normally do. I'm just very happy some guys actually seem to be working on solving the future issues for us now, I'm just sorry I can't be of much assistance on the technical part. But if the initiative needs to be supported by donations or a yearly fee, I'll be more than happy to do so! hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96230 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] How many of you have spare squeezeboxes?
I have in active duty: 1 x Transporter (main device) 1 x Duet 2 x Booms 2 x Controllers (counting the one that's part of the Duet), plus the controller app for my BlackBerry tablet I have as spares: 1 x Receiver (part of a Duet, but the Controller is being used with the Transporter and Booms) 1 x Boom (still in the box, has a Europe plug but if one of my existing Booms dies I will use its plug) 1 x Touch (bought months ago, still in the box) 1 x Touch en route (bought earlier this week from TigerDirect, the lowest online price I could find) 1 x Controller (bought from Logitech Canada when they had a clearance sale about a year ago) I think I will set up all four of my boxed spares (2 Touch, 1 Boom, 1 Controller) with current firmware, and then rebox. Mind you, I might set up a Touch to replace the current Duet that's sees occasional use in the very basic home theatre setup, and then keep that Receiver as a spare. I'd use the Controller (from the Duet) with the Touch. After an initial bout of mild panic and distress, I'm getting more sanguine about the situation. I personally seldom use the streaming services (although I do very much like the CBC Music service, which is mostly linked from the Internet Radio presets). It's my ripped library that I value. I also am quite sure that I can't see the future, other than to acknowledge that things WILL change. Maybe I'll become a champion of the cloud, and love cloud-based music. Hard to see, but even five years ago I didn't foresee where I am now with server-based music. R. Re: [slim] What steps does community need to take to ensure continued function of SB players
I only use ip3k players, so I rely totally on a local server. I think that in a community fork scenario, a drastic change in users demographics must be taken into account. Casual internet radio users will go elsewhere, no new users, die-hard SB users leaving little by little. This would be the trend I think, if the fork was a great success but no new SB audio player would appear on the market. With this in mind, I think it could be acceptable to qualify one small server platform (a plug of some sort), and have it managed like a router with dual firmware: reboot to update to the new firmware (which can be silently downloaded), if this doesn't work, power cycle to roll back to the working firmware. If you don't have to do this every day, I believe it could be acceptable considering the kind of users the service would have. The presence of a well-known server on the internet acting as a front end is indispensable I believe, but the layer could be thin. With a flock of tiny 24/7 servers maybe stream handling could be distributed, as in the torrents + tracker model ? Well I am sure you devs have a much clearer view of what can be done. I just want to stress the idea that if a fork happens, the user base will be different from today's. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96208 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Dean Blackketter is on LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/blackketter. Sean Adams is there too but it doesn't look like he keeps his profile up-to-date. Let's be realistic, people. The idea of a dedicated music player is not a mass-market item anymore--people are far more interested in set-top boxes that happen to do music. With high-end receivers doing built-in AirPlay or direct reading of CIFS shares for music management, the dedicated device is less relevant. And Sonos may have the market and mind share at this point. At any rate, I think the best way forward for the Slim Devices platform would be a hardware-based server (Raspberry Pi?) with a high-end audio stage built out of it. Make sure the device is as open source as possible, and will be fully compatible with the open source LMS. There's no practical way the IP3K players could be made open source (although a lot can be done with their current firmware, which is pretty much mature and stable). The Touch could probably have some open source development, and perhaps a new device even more directly based on the Touch hardware (without violating Logitech's patents or copyrights). Touch technology is already 3-4 years old and a new device could benefit from hardware advances. I could see an audiophile manufacturer taking up the cause, perhaps one of the existing Squeezebox customizers, but this again would basically be reinventing the Slim Devices idea, probably at a higher price point. And of course things like SqueezePlayer, SqueezeSlave, and iPeng are important to the platform moving foward. At that point the important thing is maintaining the Slim protocol and ensuring new servers and clients can be developed to it. --Mike mrfantasy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96213 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] How many of you have spare squeezeboxes?
I am more than a little amused at myself. I've just bought a *second* replacement Touch, and have a surfeit of replacements available now. See above. I remember back a few years I had an Olympus 2200 camera, great little thing, state of the art at one time. It used SMC cards, and I heard somehow that these were being phased out and wouldn't be available much longer. So I found a bunch online and bought them. The camera died, and I have moved way beyond that early technology. I still have several unused SMC cards lying around, must toss them sometime soon. Then I had a *ist Pentax DSLR, which could use a set of 4 AA batteries; it also accepted CRV3 batteries (basically replaces two AAs each). I got tired of recharging my AAs and found a bunch of CRV3s online at cheap prices, and bought a bunch (not the rechargeable kind). Since then I've gone through two new Pentax DSLRs, and now have a K5. They don't use CRV3s. I have about ten or fifteen of those suckers taking up space in my utility drawer. Better safe than sorry, I guess, but I hope my SB investment doesn't end up being just as useless. R. I have a backup Controller I bought a few months back for £70, mainly because it is the most vulnerable bit of hardware due to its being handled, dropped, thrown, sat on, smeared with food and othewise abused by my young family. I bought it because I foresaw the end of Squeezebox some time back and was ready to pounce when the clearance sales hit the UK stores in May this year. It is still in its box because the Controller is obviously a lot more resilient than it looks! I am not unduly worried about my Receivers. They just sit there and work. Likewise LMS on my Synology NAS. Hopefully Logitech will make a reasonable sounding and not too expensive replacement for the Touch which I can buy as replacements for my Receivers at some point. By then I imagine the whole family will have smartphones to use instead of the Controller. I have no emotional attachment to the Squeezebox line. The only thing I need it to do is play my music library, synchronise if necessary and give me access to a couple of on-line music services. I have had my Duet with two receivers for 4 years now and I think it has more than repaid the £375 investment already. If Logitech UE offers a replacement that does those things then (if one or both Receivers stop working) I might just go with it, particularly if it stays a lot cheaper than Sonos. Squeezebox may be dropped as a name, but I am sure that the most important and innovative parts of its technology will live on under the UE banner - particularly if they are better than, or equal to, the Sonos alternative. For instance secure multi-room synch over Wi-Fi is simply too compelling a feature to drop. If the worst comes to the worst I will buy Sonos - although I am sure I will resent having to pay so much for inferior goods! To me actually the only one that matters most is the boom, because it's back lighting make it the best bed side device. For the older products we can pretty much forget a third party FW, for the more recent devices it's technically not trivial (legal issues aside) and I rather doubt there will ever be a third party FW based on Logitech sources. In short, there are differences in that respece but I doubt they have any practical consequences. Most of the source for the Touch firmware is is available online. There are several people here (including me) who have compiled this and it does run quite well on a Touch. A while back all the source files were changed to a different license which if I remember correctly is much more lenient and done on purpose to allow third parties to modify them. I'd have to look carefully to see if this allows others to distribute a binary. The parts that are not available are some codecs and the wifi driver. So as long as you stream pcm or wav and use ethernet you can use a Touch with non Logitech compiled firmware. The Wifi issue can be dealt with by using an external wifi bridge and the codec issue can be dealt with by having your local server to format conversion for you. I realize there might be some issues with certain internet streams, but again if these get converted in the server it's not an issue. As an interesting aside on this issue Triodes EDO applet is distributing some significant changes to the firmware by a third party, it works and Logitech has not been trying to shut him down. John S. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Longivity
If you want to use wifi and your wifi card goes bad you can always use a wifi bridge, they will be available for a LONG time to come. For a Touch the display is probably the most likely part to go bad, after that its the electrolytic caps, as has been mentioned it is heat over time that is the big contributor here. Next is thermal shock (turn on and turn off being the biggest contributor), then mechanical shock (dropping it on the floor). Last is semiconductor degradation. Modern chips do actually have a lifetime (the older chips have a longer lifetime than the newer chips) So the Touch being built with slightly older technology is actually a good thing. The newest chips being made today are only rated for 10-11 years, the stuff in the Touch is probably good for 25 - 30 years before the semiconductors die. There is definately a tradeoff between turning on and off and leaving on all the time. If it's not going to be used for weeks or months, go ahead and unplug. If you are using it daily or weekly leave it on all the time. As has been mentioned probably the best thing you can do is have the display off when not being used. (or at least dimmed) Treated with care a Touch should be able to last quite a long time. John S. JohnSwenson wrote: As an interesting aside on this issue Triodes EDO applet is distributing some significant changes to the firmware by a third party, it works and Logitech has not been trying to shut him down. My EDO app only updates the kernel partition of the filesystem - which as Linux is GPL and is required to be open source for any things which are statically linked to it. This works as the non open kernel modules (wifi driver) and some binaries for the IR processor are in the main filesystem and are dynamically loaded and still part of the Logitech distribution. Its definitely possible to build a 3rd party firmware for Touch - however as you say there's some binaries which are part of this which are probably not distributable without agreement. Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
Would a next system be some combination of: 1. Raspberry Pi or similar small footprint computer on the cheap 2. Squeezeplay to support hi-res, gapless and synchronized playback options 4. USB DAC support 5. HDMI support for display 3. LMS on local server Just some thoughts... travelfotografer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Which is more future-proof: SB3 or Touch
I would say the Touch is much more future-proof. The Touch firmware is semi-open, whereas the SB3 firmware is completely closed. Also, the SB3 resources are much scarcer, to the point where they had to stop adding features several years ago because they were basically out of memory on the SB3. As for the mysb.com requirement at login, there are ways around that. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96237 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Agree. I don't think it can be done on hobby basis, if a central server is used it needs to be a business entity (company) behind it and it likely needs to be commercial, at least the hosting need to be somehow financed, either through user fees or through advertising, hardware/app sales or some other way. [slim] SB Alternatives
I've read through several threads and like many others, I have a few extra SB units. I'm not about to ditch my current system. However, I would be interested in the alternatives that are out there for hi-fi networked music aside from Sonos. I'll start out with the following: Olive http://www.olive.us/ Popcorn Hour http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/ Yamaha Musiccast2 http://www.yamaha.com/yec/musiccast2/index.asp Pioneer N-50 http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/Audio-Components/Hi-Fi+Audio/N-50 Cambridge Audio Sonata NP30 http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=604Title=NP30%20Network%20Music%20Player iPeng on iPad or iPod + Cambrige Audio iD100 Digital Dock for iPad iPhone http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/summary.php?PID=605Title=iD100%20Digital%20Dock%20for%20iPad%20%20iPhone I think this is a good start. I haven't begun to analyze the pros and cons of all these systems. I am sure there are many other alternatives. jimzak's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17592 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96241 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Playlist limit of 500?
Is there a limit or a setting to the number of songs that can be loaded into a playlist? i have an iTunes playlist with 3,500 songs and when i try to play it SB only loads the first 500. i've been doing this for years and don't recall ever hitting this kind of limit, and i can't find a setting to control it. ?? eschurr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2007 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96243 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Playlist limit of 500?
It has been there for quite some time now, probably since 7.6.0. You can change the limit using the LMS web interface. I think it's under Settings Advanced Performance. It was introduced to avoid the problems of LMS completely locking up when loading large playlists, especially on underpowered servers. aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96243 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Any reason why you're discounting Sonos? From my perspective, Sonos does everything that I need, albeit at a higher price than I would ideally like. I could probably sell my various squeezeboxes whilst they still have some market value for enough to start a 2 zone Sonos system. It's not a scenario I'm entirely happy with, as my squeezebox system is working perfectly, but I guess we're all in the same boat from that point of view. Yep my own ballpark figure is that the system can tolerate ~2000 files per Ghz of x86 CPU core . But beware of the shuffle function with very large playlist it can bog down the server . Problems seems exponential to the playlist size . Also it gets worse if the database is in bad shape , so to periodically perform full clear and rescans also helps this case . It is good that it has a limit I once encountered a bug that made the server try cue up every file in the dB , it stopped at my 4000 track limit :) Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96243 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
