It beats Roon in virtually every area.

The only obvious advantage of Roon is (slightly) less requirement for
technical nous.

LMS does require a very small amount of technical ability in terms of
installing plugins, configuring them to work together, building RasPi
endpoints from PiCorePlayer, etc.

Roon has got "plug 'n' play" a little more polished.

But that's it as far as I'm concerned!

It really is a horrible problem. I've got it on a much bigger scale -
things like:

- Mozart, WA Mozart, W.A. Mozart, Mozart Wolfgang, etc

There really is no way out of it other than spend the time to fix the
tags.

The problem is that some say "Classical", some say "Classic", some say

I've had this issue!

For me - it was (still is happening) because I am using iPeng and I had
a bluetooth headset connected to the same iPad. The bluetooth headset
controls the volume on the iPad's player - and if that's iPeng, then you
get inadvertent SB volume control.

I just have to make sure the headset is turned off when I am running
iPeng...and because it is a work headset, it should be off when I'm
listening anyway :)

[slim] Tagging Issue

2017-11-19 Thread amey01

I fail to believe I can't find anything on this issue by searching, but
maybe I'm just searching the wrong thing?

I have an issue, which stems from one particular Windows computer
running MP3Tag. Any file tagged with this system is problematic with
LMS. It is:

Read by any other music player
Shows up in the LMS library
Does not show when added to a playlist (now playing playlist, or any
other playlist)
The file plays at the appropriate place in the playlist (notwithstanding
it not displaying)
The file plays with no issue
When the file is playing, it does not show any tag data on the SBT. On
iPeng, it displays the previous track data.

What error or setting could be causing this?

It mystifies you? Really? That they would sell (and take money from, and
make profit from) a product dependent on this service, then stop the
service?

That would be unethical and unscrupulous.

There is no way that you could support the ethical abhorrence in this
scenario, and in most jurisdictions this would also be illegal.

Actually even if you use the volume control in iPeng; the volume
information is sent separately from the audio information, the volume
control is not being done by applying a gain to the digital data like in
the Squeezebox (the Receiver on the other end of the AirPlay connection
might still do that but iPeng and AirPlay itself keep their hands off
the data; at least unless you apply an equalizer) so you can design an
AirPlay device that actually does analog volume control.

Sorry to bring up an old quote, but just interested where the
transcoding to 16/44.1 ALAC takes place (if for instance, I play a FLAC
file from the SB server). I assume it is on the server, but it's not
done by the Apple device is it?

Re: [slim] The Future of Squeezebox Product Line-Up

2012-10-09 Thread amey01

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96660

Question: Would you buy a new Squeezebox player if it became available?

- Yes , if less than $100
- Yes, if less than $200
- Yes, if less than $500
- Yes, if less than $1000
- Yes - price is no object; I just want the best sound
- No - I would NOT buy another Squeezebox player

Go for it I say. But I really don't understand why you need to buy
anything. Squeezebox Server is open source and as such can be modified
or forked immediately if you so desire.

That's all the IP you need - then you can go out and manufacture a
player that will connect to this software.

Squeezeplay is also open source if you want to start somewhere.

So what exactly is there to buy from Logitech?

Re: [slim] LMS Future! What's version 10 of UE Music Library

2012-09-13 Thread amey01

erland wrote:
The 10.0 version is UE Music Library, the server software which is used
 for UE Smart Radio devices.
It comes with two start scripts:
 - ueml.pl (Which starts it in UE Music Library mode)
 - slimserver.pl (Which starts it in LMS mode)

I'm not sure how tested the LMS mode is at the moment, it might work but
it might also be a bit broken because Logitech haven't had time to test
 it properly yet.

The general difference between LMS and UE Music Library as I've
 understood it is:
 - UE Music Library doesn't allow installation of third party plugins
 - UE Music Library doesn't allow plugins which works on a specific
player, for example Random Mix plugin and many other plugins doesn't
 work.
 - UE Music Library only provides the music content, the current playlist
and player status is managed by the central cloud server at
uesmartradio.com, so a remote control that wants to control a player
needs to do it through uesmartradio.com
 - UE Music Library doesn't come with a web interface, as far as I've
seen this means that you can only configure it through the configuration
applets which are only available on Windows and OSX, while Linux users
is referred to using a text editor and manually change the configuration
files, for example to specify the music folder. Possibly it might be
possible to configure it through the iPhone/Android apps also but to use
them you need to have a UE Smart Radio and I haven't dared to upgrade
 one of my Radios yet.
 - UE Music Library isn't compatible with the Squeezebox hardware (it
only works with UE Smart Radio)
 - UE Music Library only officially support OSX and Windows, you can use
Linux if you like to but these are not supported and probably not tested
much and you need to get them from 'http://downloads.slimdevices.com'
because they aren't available on http://uesmartradio.com.

Wow - sounds really simple and highly suited to the mass market! NOT.

Way to go Logitech.

[slim] Missing Artists?

2012-06-01 Thread amey01

I just upgraded to 7.7.2 (from 7.7.1) and noticed there were less
artists (by count) than previously.

On going through, I have found there are some artists missing from the
list. These artists are searchable without issue, but they are missing
from the Artists list.

Am I missing something?

these things ripped from a disc or created from some higher source?
If the FLAC file was created from a disk rip, was it secure? etc. All
this is fairly minor in most cases, and I'd be happy if I knew the FLACs
were created from the studio masters in a high quality environment. But
somehow I'm picturing some minimum wage guy creating the digital files

Checksum is your friend...it is very simple to test a download with
one of your own CDs, ripped as securely as you please. Checksum both
files and see if there are any differences.

2012-03-14 Thread amey01

Why on earth would you look for an inferior alternative? Squeezebox is a
one of a kind. It is for this reason you even have to ask such a
question in the first place.

It is also for that reason that I think the future is bright. How could
you think otherwise? Simply because they are not into planned
obsolescence and a continual cycle of change-for-the-sake-of-change and
spinning wheels without traction? The system is already nigh on
perfect.

 the correct data to play.

As for paragraph 2: see the explanation of paragraph 1.

Nothing incorrect here.

Sorry - you must have interpreted incorrectly. That is exactly what I
meant. There will be no errors in the data delivered to the Squeezebox

data gets there, it gets there perfectly. If the data does not get
there (due to a computer's inability to transfer at the required speed)
then no data.

That does not change paragraph 2 - clocked data is entirely different.

I have wanted this for a very long time.

But it would have to work. I don't want a science experiment. So work
properly, Work reliably. Not require diddy-daddlying.

Ideally, I'd like something that uses 3G (as FLAC quality is not
essential in the car). But not with its own access - it would have to
have SAP (Bluetooth) to connect via my existing access.

A wi-fi sync (as you describe) would also work well.

And so would the ability to simply plug in a portable USB hard disk. It
is not hard (and takes no effort) to synchronise my server with another
USB hard disk (I do it all the time for backup) and simply plug that
into the car.

The Squeezebox in the car would have to be designed specifically to
allow operation while not looking at it, and not compromise safety in
any way.

An alternative would be an Android/iPhone app that allows all this
(over 3G of course) on the deivce itself and simply connect that to the
car. I know that's possible now, but it's not exactly bother-less. As
I said - I've got better things to do than sit around for hours trying
to piece something together.

Re: [slim] 7.4.1 rebuffering woes

2010-08-08 Thread amey01

My problem is more unusual. I have not seen any reference to it on the
forums.

I get rebuffering also (SB3, wireless), but only when the SB is first
turned on. If I try to play music straight away, I get really poor
performance, stuttering display and slow response, then rebuffering,
then SB3 reboots.

I get this with BOTH my Squeezeboxes.

But after they have been connected to the server for 5 minutes or so I
have no more issues.

NOW - If the Squeezebox(es) are turned on and I turn the server on then
I have instant connectivity, no problem. It is only if the actual SBs
are off.

Okay - everything looks great. Of course, what I have said before holds
(and I'm sure it's all on your list, so I won't reiterate) but here are
my notes on .996:

Installation (other than the uninstallation first glitch) was fine -
didn't have to re-register.

All functionality you mentioned is present and accounted for. Volume
control (with 100% there all the time (and not just when you use it) is
great!

Not sure if I mentioned before a couple of things:

Would be great if (perhaps at the top of the screen?) you could easily
jump between Now Playing, Playlist and the Library. It is a little
annoying having to constantly revert to the main screen and re-select.

Tips or captions on some of the buttons might help. Not sure though. I
got a little confused when trying to change players, but now I know it's
all good. Not sure if they would get in the way and spoil the interface
or not. Just to let you know and maybe think about it.

The simple question is how much of your work (ie, time) are you willing
 to put at risk?

Absolutely. And most importantly, don't use RAID. One popped capacitor
in the NAS' power supply or dropping something on the case is all it
takes to take out both disks at once. It's NOT backup.

I too back up to a USB hard disk, then periodically take this to work
and run a backup to Ultrium tape, which I keep in my office. Do the
backup as you go - every time I add a new album, I FTP it to both disks.

I completely agree that RAID is not backup. But I wouldn't go so far as
saying don't use RAID. It has its uses. RAID's biggest advantage for
music libraries is that if one of the drives dies you can switch to the
other and not have any downtime. That said, I personally don't
understand the urge for zero downtime for one's own music collection. I
mean, I love my music, but none of it is so critical that I can't live
with it for 24 hours until I can get the off-site backup, get another
drive, and restore the music library. Besides, there's always
SqueezeNetwork, Pandora, Napster, etc. until my library is back in
 action.

Sorry - I meant -don't use RAID for backup- - yes - RAID is -high
availability-, not backup! If high availability is what you need, go
ahead.just have a backup as well!

It just gets my goat because I see so many NAS/RAID devices marketed as
backup and never lose another file and all that BS. There is going to
be a lot of sorry people out there!

2009-09-22 Thread amey01

As long as you really are using the same source for your tags, it sounds
to me like a configuration issue between the Linux and Windows PCs.

Go through the tagging settings and ensure you are using the same
tagging formats and settings. Also, ensure you are mapping the metadata
to the same fields in your resulting FLAC files.

Best of luck - tagging is the No.1 PITA in audio ripping!

If you'd like to actively test, including screenshots, send my an
 email.

 Cheers,

First off to answer your questions on my XDAIIs (WM2003):

1: Yes - I had to re-register
2: Pressing the back or hangup key gives the exact expected response,
every time.

Other things:

1: I still find it difficult tomove tracks in a Now Playing
selection. I think the easiest solution is a contextual menu for Move
Up, Move down, Play next, Delete, etc.
2: Volume display of % for paranoid types like me that like to ensure
it is on 100%. Sometimes I adjust it (eg. remotely from my PC when the
'phone rings) and like to ensure it is back on 100% for serious
listening.
3: Progress bar times would also be a good addition - elapsed and
remaining time, like on an iPod.
4: Album sorting is by name rather than by track order. This is (for
me) offputting - especially on familiar albums where you know (and
expect) a certain order. Maybe a setting / preference?
5: Though not essential, it is sometimes handy if you can get meta info
from the Now Playing screen. eg. Is this a FLAC or an ALAC?

Finally, some maybe just mes:

1: I'd still love to see a New Music display, but on account that you
haven't included it I guess there is nobody else screaming out for
this?
2: I generally leave the control on when listening, but the screen goes
blank after 30 seconds. On account of this, it would help if the first
press (if and only if the screen is on sleep) of the screen would wake
the screen backlight rather than being an active touch.

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2009-08-30 Thread amey01

Used 0.98 extensively tonight. A few things:

The progress bar no longer works for indication of time or jumping to
part of track - tapping on it simply restarts the track from the
beginning;

To this end, a time indication on this would be great;

Favourites is great, but would still love to see New Music as an
option as well;

When selecting an item in a list and entering it, then going back, the
selected item is sometimes (always?) displayed in the greater list at
the bottom - it would be better if this was in the middle of the screen
or at least where it was originally. When it appears at the bottom it is
sometimes confusing - does this make sense?

Coming along well!

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-06-13 Thread amey01

I've just downloaded 0.94 and used it for my listening tonight.

I want to like this - a LOT! So far, so good, but I've been using
SlimRemote for quite a while so that is my benchmark.

A couple of extra suggestions if I may?

1: When choosing tracks from the library, it is hard to switch between
the Now Playing, Playlist and Library screens - basically you have
to go back to the start each and every time. It would be nice to be able
to flick between these three main screens.

1a: When you leave the library screen (for any reason), when you
re-enter it starts from the beginning and does not remember your
position - very annoying if you were at P for example.

2: The search function would be even better if it searched anywhere in
the string, not just beginning with. That is - for instance - it
should find The Idea of North by typing in north or idea rather
than insisting on the idea

All up though, this is coming together really nicely. Congratulations!

It'd be great if it had the ability to Play next and move up and down

Maybe by the same method - press and hold on a song [for instance]
presents a menu to either add to playlist (obviously),or play next, etc.

make 10 years without an issue.

There are many on this very forum using almost 10 year old SlimMP3s and

[slim] 7.2 Handling of Compilations

2008-09-06 Thread amey01

Firstly, I have only just upgraded from 6.5.4 and all I can say is WOW
- it only confirms in my mind what an excellent company SD is for making
such an upgrade available for such a great product. It went much more
smoothly than I ever imagined! Only problem:

Compilation albums now show up as multiple instances under Albums
instead of one album. That makes them extremely difficult to play as
you need to ADD each instance of the album instead of adding the
album only. There's gotta be a way to change this - I just can't find

but that's NOT it!

Anyone? I'm sure this has been discussed, but can't uncover anything in
my searching.

I'd really like to upgrade (to 7.2 now)..
