I doubt Android would interpret ASCII control characters in strings the

Unicode Bidirectional text control, or something alike, maybe?

Or just a weird bug in the app.

Re: [slim] How to use the Transporter IR input jack?

2015-01-15 Thread sebp

Well, I'm right handed, and kind of born with two left hands. ;)
I suck at soldering things, and lose patience quickly, so I'd prefer
something either really simple to build (crafting a jack cable with a
couple components should be okay) or ready to use.

Thank you anyway! :)

Now, if DIY is your thing, could you tell me if I am right thinking that
a typical IR receiver uses a three pins layout (power, ground, signal)
and that if the Transporter only features a mono jack connection, it
would probably only take care of the signal and ground pins? Unless the
signal pin could also carry power?

[slim] How to use the Transporter IR input jack?

2015-01-14 Thread sebp

Hi all,

I've changed my A/V furniture lately, and my Transporter is now out of
sight.
I've been thinking about using its IR input jack to get the IR signals
forwarded to it, but the IR cable I already own doesn't seem to get the
job done (I had bought it back in the days when I used the IR-Blaster
plugin, though, so that's probably an IR emitter rather than a
receiver).

However, I'm still a bit confused about what kind of montage/cable I
should use to reach my goal.
Here's what the doc has to say:
 INFRARED INPUT AND OUTPUT
Transporter is equipped with an infrared input for control from other
 systems (IR repeaters,
home automation controllers with IR blasters, etc.) Transporter will
 respond to signals on this
input identically to signals received via the IR receiver on the front
 panel and can be directly
connected to IR transmitter devices via a 3.5mm to 3.5mm mono cable as
 if connecting to
 an IR LED dongle.

So, it looks like only mono cables are used, although most cables I can
find (like 'this one'
seem to be stereo.
And that's where I'm lost...

Can I use a passive cable to forward IR signals to the Transporter?
If so, could somebody point me to some possibly cheap cable reference
that's known to work?
If not, any advice on active IR signal repeaters?

Thanks for your insight.

I have a server behind a 100/50 Mbps broadband connectionthat is -quite-

If somebody here is also having a good broadband connection and is
wishing to let me use that much disk space on his/her server, I'll let
him/her use as much on mine (I can provide up to 2TB).
The only warranty I offer is that, given both reside on the same server,
I'd take as much care of him/her data as I do for mine. ;-)

FWIW, I'm planning to use 'duplicity' (http://duplicity.nongnu.org/) for

Re: [slim] Transporter Display - bit depth and frequency

2011-12-05 Thread sebp

Although it'll make things look better, the MusicInfoScreen plugin isn't
mandatory.

All you need is to define a new title format from the web UI (Settings
Interface), calling the SAMPLESIZE (bit depth) and SAMPLERATE
(frequency) keywords.

Something like this, for example:
TITLE [SAMPLESIZE/SAMPLERATE]

Then, just select it as the default title format for your player
(Settings Player Basic Settings, from the web UI).

Note that SAMPLERATE appears as Hz, not kHz (i.e. 44100, not 44.1)

Re: [slim] SBS vs LMS vs SSOTS

2011-12-05 Thread sebp

One server software, but five different names.
That's quite easy: ;-)
- SliMP3 Server, initially
- SlimServer (SS), from release 5.0.0 to release 6.5.4
- SqueezeCenter (SC), from release 7.0.0 to release 7.3.3
- Squeezebox Server (SBS), from release 7.4.0 to release 7.6.1
- Logitech Media Server (LMS), starting from release 7.7.0

SSOTS was historically for SlimServer On TurboStation (and followed
SSODS, SlimServer On DiskStation), but - although its name hasn't
changed - it's followed the server software's evolution.

SSODS/SSOTS is a third-party distribution of the server software that's
been specifically designed to run on some NAS boxes.

Latest SSODS/SSOTS release is 4.14, and supports Squeezebox Server
7.6.1.
There's no (official) release available for LMS, yet.

Music is too important for me not to own it, and these online services

They may be a great way to discover new music, but I couldn't live with
them as my sole mean of listening to music.
I'm perfectly aware most people would, though.

In these trouble times, I'm worried that if I ever get to lose my job
and am broke someday, I wouldn't be able to continue paying for them,
but would still be able to listen to the thousand albums I've bought so
far (and even try to sold some to make some cash).

Even if I could afford it today, I'm not a subscriber to this kind of
services today because I simply wouldn't use them enough to make it
worth the monthly cost.

This is some kind of worst case scenario, but I'm afraid Logitech could
design their future SB products as fat clients with closed-source
firmware.

Being closed-source, they could embed all the required stuff to access
online music services. mysb.com not being needed any more, they could
shut it down (and I guess this alone would imply huge savings!).

Then, most potential consumers have always complained the SB couldn't
simply connect to a UPnP server, but required a specific server.
Logitech could just make the future SB a UPnP client. Say good bye to
SBS/LMS.

Future will tell, but I find this scenario quite plausible.

I guess I should buy few Touch before it's too late...

by Junien Labrousse (Executive Vice President, Products and President,

NOW THAT AIRPLAY TECHNOLOGY BECOMES THE GENERAL RULE, WHAT'S THE FUTURE
OF THE SQUEEZEBOX DIGITAL MUSIC STREAMING RANGE OF PRODUCTS?
The Squeezebox range of products fills a very specific need. Listening
to Internet radios, accessing online music services (Deezer and
Spotify, for example). There are several things to improve: we have to
simplify the product's positioning because it's hard to sell, but we
also have to work on the user interface. The first Squeezebox was used
to stream music anywhere in one's house. Internet radios came later. In
fact, most of Squeezebox customers today are more interested by the
Internet radio capability. Many of our developments aren't absolutely
necessary any more, and we need to rework the product from start for a
positioning change. Naturally, we'll keep the features our users have
 liked so far.
Doesn't smell very good, if you ask me...

There are thousands and thousands of radios available from the
Squeezebox.
They're classified by city/genre/etc, and you can search a station by

BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 6 are available, if they're the ones you're

You'd theorically need the Controller coming in the Duet package to set

set it up without a Controller.

Olive, Linn and Naim, to name a few, seem to offer such possibility,

But as you say, and AFAIK, this relies on third-party proprietary

Check that you've enabled the MusicIP plugin in SBS.
If not already done, restart SBS and do a wipe scan again (MusicIP must
be running before SBS starts, and only a wipe scan will set the mixable

show it imported status from MusicIP for the discovered files.

Re: [slim] Help about network Receiver configuration

2011-08-10 Thread sebp

Hi,

To configure the Receiver with Net-UDAP, you'll need to have it
connected with a wire to your router.
Connecting your PC and Receiver together may work, but chances you'll
get into problems are more likely.

Once Net-UDAP is able to discover your Receiver, you'll have to
configure it so that it uses your wireless network.

It's up to you to decide whether you want the Receiver connected to
your LAN wired or wireless, and whether you'll use the DHCP protocol or
provide static IP configuration, but to begin with, I'd go for the
simple 'Wireless, 64-bit WEP, DHCP'
route.

Basically, you'd just have to change these values from the sample:

Code:

wireless_SSID=WiFi wireless_wep_key_0=1234567890
squeezecenter_address=192.168.0.2

When you're done configuring the Receiver, it'll hopefully connect to
your wireless router, get an IP address from it, and will connect to
the Squeezebox Server running on your PC.

Your Android phone will only have to be connected to your wireless
network.
Depending on the controller app you'll use, you may need to specify
which IP address the server is using.

IIRC, it was using Bluetooth, not WiFi.

Christian,

Could something be done in a future SqueezeCommander release so that

Thanks.

How could you control 2 players simultaneously, unless they're
sync'ed?
SqueezeCommander's user interface, like all SqueezePlay based
controllers' ones, requires you to select one player to control.
That being said, nothing prevents you from switching back and forth
players.

When I installed SqueezePlayer at one point I had (different) music
coming from my LR system and the 'droid but I wasn't sure if it was
*supposed* to work that way ;-)
Players don't automatically synchronize to each others by default, if
that's what worries you.
What's a LR, by the way?

Re: [slim] Will a SBT play Broadcast Wave Files?

2011-05-09 Thread sebp

According to 'Wikipedia's BWF article'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Wave_Format):
 WAV COMPATIBILITY
Since the only difference between a BWF and a normal WAV is the
extended information in the file header (Bext-Chunk, Coding-History,
etc...), a BWF does not require a special player for playback.
So, the Touch should technically have no problem reading them.
Not sure the scanner would consider files having a .bwf extension as
WAVs, though.
It may be necessary to rename them with a .wav extension.

Phil Leigh;615234 Wrote:
It's easy enough to do your own tests... you already have SOX which is
capable of high quality downsampling/word reduction.
Hi Phil,

I had another challenging session last sunday, and I surprisingly had
the impression I could hear some differences this time.
I couldn't really tell I heard anything missing from the CD version,
but the HD file just sounded better to my ears.

As I don't trust them, I used Audacity's spectrum analyser with both
files, and looking at average gain values for some frequencies, they
always appeared to be a bit louder in the HD Version than in the CD
version.
If you look at the screenshots, you'll see it's 4 dB louder for 100 Hz,
for example (-32dB is for the HD file, -36dB is for the CD file).

I then computed replaygains using foobar2000, and got -6.40dB for the
CD version and -6.02dB for the HD version.

So, downsampling 24/96 to 16/44.1 with SoX seems to lower the average
gain of the 16/44.1 version a little bit.

Is an average 0.38dB volume difference sufficient to be heard?
I can't tell for sure, but thought it would be worth mentioning...

One of them, who is more accustomed to comparisons than me, also
suspected his downsampled version was sounding lower.
I only discovered that later.

I first compared commercial HD/CD downloads, and then rolled my own CD
version from the HD file.
In both cases this 0.38dB volume difference existed.

I'll try using r8brain to check whether the volume difference also
exists with that tool.

Phil Leigh;616382 Wrote:

I've also been told from some beta testers that the embedded server was

I read a very well documented report on a french forum where the tester
was able to successfully ABX 16/44.1 and 24/192 on digital silence...
until he used proper dithering and noise shaping algorithms to
downsample the 24bit/352.8kHz DXD file he was using as a reference.

However, the point is, as you say: it makes no difference in real life.

amey01;613425 Wrote:
The true advantage comes from higher sampling rates. But people seem
 obsessed with bit-depth as well.
Oh, really?

Technically speaking, 24 bit-depth allow to reproduce the sound of a
fly farting, immediately followed by the sound of a thunderclap, both
being at relative realistic levels.

Higher sampling rates just allow the reproduction of higher
frequencies, which would lead to give these questions an answer :
- Does your audio system is able to reproduce frequencies above 20 kHz?
- Are you really able to hear frequencies above 20 kHz?

My amp and loudspeakers are supposed to be able to reproduce
frequencies up to 40 kHz, but I cannot hear a 16 kHz test tone.
So, what's the use?

I definitely agree.

I'm including Squeezeboxen in this), can sound truly exceptional and
definitely better than just CD quality.

I have purchased such recordings from a number of sites and I have to
say that I've been very impressed. The ones I'm most familiar with
 include...

 http://www.hdtracks.com
 http://www.linnrecords.com
 http://www.bowers-wilkins.co.uk/Society_of_Sound

Hey, it's not for everyone and you certainly won't hear a difference on
computer speakers or cheap playback equipment. And you do need a way to
play it back (which, of course, your Touch will certainly accomodate).
But given a good recording and a great playback system, there's no
 going back.
I mostly disagree, now.

My audio system consists of a Transporter, a NuForce IA-7 amp and KEF
iQ9 loudspeakers.
Not something I'd consider cheap playback equipement.

Thanks to BW's SoS, I downloaded my first 24/48 recording two years
ago, a Portico Quartet album, and when I listened to it for the first
time, I couldn't help thinking : Wow, so HD files sound like that? How
great!.
But then, out of curiosity, I also downloaded the 16/44.1 version of
the same album, listened to it very carefully, and was really surprised
I honestly couldn't tell that the 24/48 version sounded better in any
way than the 16/44.1 did.

I since have downloaded many other albums from BW's SoS, going from
classical to world music, and each time I compared CD quality vs 24/48,
I simply failed to tell that one version sounded better than the other.

I also tried recently to challenge downloaded 24/96 files versus
regular CD 16/44.1 rips, with no more success.

In my humble opinion, people who can tell for sure they're able to
distinguish 24/96 from 16/44.1 either have not compared versions of the
same recording, or are fooled by their brain.

May sound too obvious, but have you checked that brightness is not set
at its lowest value (i.e. off) on the Classic?
AFAIK, this setting only applies when the Squeezebox is connected to
its server, which could explain why you see some startup messages...

The Classic offers this option in its low-level setup menu (that you
access by pressing and holding the left arrow for around 5 seconds):
Current Settings Auto upgrade.
Just switch its value from off to on, and it will perform future
firmware upgrades without waiting for someone to press and hold the
Brightness key.
Go back to the root level of the setup menu, and you'll find options to
connect back to your Squeezebox Server or mysqueezebox.com.

I've been using this option for years on my Classic and Transporter,
it's safe.

Am I all alone thinking AirPlay is nothing more some than some kind of
improved (i.e. with its own user interface and some ability to share

receivers?
Frankly, as long as multiple AirPlay devices aren't able to

long as one AirPlay server (like one iTiunes instance) isn't able
to serve -several- clients independently, I can't see where Apple's

I mainly use the browse by artists menu, and search for songs when not

it). The Controllers come out of their cradles when friends pass me a
visit. I barely use the web UI.
Statistics, well, last.fm handle mines good enough to me.
I love listening to MusicIP mixes, because that's good music for the
lazy.
Even if I take care of tagging my music with artwork, album art is not
a must have for me. It's nice to get it when playing, though.
Being able to browse music from a track's contextual menu is one of my
favourite features.

erland;566383 Wrote:

I listen to webradios (really liked the On Amazon feature) and
subscribed to some music services like Society of Sound. Before that, I
was a last.fm subscriber, but stopped supporting them when they decided
only 3 countries - I'm not living in - would legally be able to stream
from the SB.
I also tried Deezer lately, but found paying 10€ a month was not
compatible with being not able to listen to a single Pink Floyd album.
Friends are my best source of ideas when it comes to listening to
something new.

To be continued.
