Promising for you. I took my webcam apart last night and discovered that it did not have a microphone. That will teach me to buy a CN from the market. I'm not familiar with Tox, but a quick search to find out if it used pulseaudio lead me to https://github.com/Tox/toxic/issues/148 which suggests that Tox uses OpenAL and has its own methods to select inputs. I've set the inputs in QTox and it doesn't work. From the above, it looks like it may be to do with QT Libraries, so I'm going to try again with Venom, which is a Tox client that doesn't use QT. There is also utox and Toxic, one of which is ncurses based, so I'll give them a try. Watch this space :-) Well I've now tried all of the available Linux Clients with very mixed results: QTox: As reported. The UI is reasonable and the video seems to work OK, but the issues with the USB Mic when using QT mean I can't really test it fully yet. uTox: Works in a similar way to QTox, with sound. However, I get lots of feedback and the sound is very echoing and as a result is unintelligible. Venom: Looks promising, but neither my daughter or myself could work out how the to pick up an incoming call ;-( As a result we have no idea how well the audio and video work. Toxic: This is the ncurses based client, so should be pretty lean and mean. However, the learning curve is pretty steep and so I haven't worked out how to use it yet. I will be keeping an eye on these tools, but I think the developers have a way to go before Toc is ready for prime time. I am using Skype 4.3.0.37 Both the webcam and the Mic work fine for me in Skype 4.3.0.37; I nevr had to do a thing. Its all the other Apps that use a Mic that don't seem to work with the USB Mic. The Tox suite of IM Clients would seem ideal, given my bandwidth issue with the latest version of Skype, but at the moment I can only use a poor quality boom Mic, when I have a perfectly good USB Mic. -- Terry Coles -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2014-12-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue

Your system probably uses pulseaudio, so you might be better with the pavucontrol program since that's the mixer that comes with Pulseaudio. Hi Terry, I still can't get the audio to another piece of software on the computer, other than Skype. Don't know if https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1325282 is relevant and any help. Google just shows me lots of people having trouble getting the microphone to work with Skype. Could you have done something in the past to get that going and it's crippled it for everything else? How long before systemd consumes PulseAudio? :-) Cheers, Ralph. -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2014-12-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
