[Duo2400] Re: cardbus activation...details

2001-06-21 Thread pbjedi

FYI, in our experience we have yet to come across a 2400 that worked
properly with CardBus unmodified. But we've heard a handful of people claim
theirs does. The best way to find out, however, is to buy the CardBus card
you are interested in using and stick it in and see if it works. If it does
then great, you are set. If not, then have your 2400 modified and when it's
done you will already have your CardBus card ready to go.

[Duo2400] Re: cardbus activation...details

2001-06-21 Thread Jay

I know I've posted this information at least three time, but I promise this
is the last.

I've had two boards and the following cards worked with both unmodified:

MacAlly USB
Newer FireWire2Go
ADS Technologies USB
Ratoc CBFW2

The PowerBook never booted if any of the cards were inserted, and with some,
it wouldn't wake from sleep (Newer).

The USB success rate was 80%. The other 20% of the time, when inserted, it
would just quit and restart the Finder and never mount. They seemed to work
if I didn't insert them directly after boot up time, rather 10-20 minutes
later. I eventually got it down to a bit of a science. And yes, I've used
Card Support 1.2, 1.3, 1.4.1, 1.4.4, etc., etc. OS 8.6 thru 9.1.

My FINAL CardBus comments,

Jay

[Duo2400] Re: cardbus activation...details

2001-06-15 Thread Peter Liethen

Ok, I may be in Japan right now but I have to kick in on this thread.

First off, I had MCE enable the Cardbus in my 2400, and CardBus
worked afterwards. That's about it. I wasn't terribly happy with the
way the treated me on the phone and they didn't keep me updated when
I requested that they did. I'll I asked was to be e-mailed with the
tracking number when it was shipped, instead I had to waste mine and
their time asking about it.

A few months ago when I figured out how to repair a bad clicker in
the 2400, I shared how to do it. Some people aren't comfortable doing
the repair them self, and I offered to do it for what I think is a
reasonable price. I never keep how I do the repair secret. I want
people to know what I'm doing. Heck, I sometime lose money on the
repairs I make.

Same with the paint jobs for PowerBooks I'm offering. I share how I
do it, and if anyone e-mail me with a question, I do my best to help.

My views, flame me if you want.

1- It is not wrong to share information on how to make a modification
that someone else charges for. The way some people have been arguing
on it subject makes it seem like if Company 'FooBar' charges to swap
the hard drive in your 2400, no one should share how to do that to
their 2400. That's stupid.

2 - MCE did not develop the CardBus activation technique, no way, no
how. They just are offering to do the modification for those
uncomfortable soldering to the board of their 2400 (like me) They
don't have to share how they do it, but it would be nice if they did.
The CardBus activation is all over the place on the web, however in
Japanese. After looking at how to do it, I decided I should let
someone else with the proper equipment for working on surface mount
parts do it, like MCE.

3 - The CardBus activation can not be patented or trademarked, the
best it can be is hidden as a trade secret, but once a trade secret
is out, there is nothing that can be done about it. Example, it can
be a trade secret as to how to put on your pants, but once its out
there is nothing that can be done about it.

4 - Companys that do the CardBus activation, when asked if 'blah is
the right way to do it should confirm if it is right or wrong. If
they come back and say 'no comment' I wouldn't trust them AT ALL.

Ok, with that off my chest, I'm back to being a tourist ... c'ya all in a week.

No flames.

I can understand your point about what MCE offers. I also defer to your
knowledge on how MCE came to offer that technique.

Would you feel the same if MCE had fully developed the activation
technique? It seems use of the Japanese web pages did not in fact fully
activate the CardBus.

I was the one who offered up, inappropriately, copyright. Instead, I
appeal to the idea that work should be rewarded. Also, as 2400 owners,
we don't seem to enjoy a lot of technical help when it comes to our
machines, as a result I view DTT and MCE (and others) as resources that
should be encouraged to help us fully realize the potential of our
machines.

Enjoy Japan,

I don't see any difference between LifeIzCool and MCE in regards to the fact
that NEITHER originated the concept.

The difference I see is that LifeIzCool is willing to share it at no charge,
and MCE is cashing in.

The discussion of whether $100 is fair or not is just silly.

I, from the beginning have questioned what exactly MCE is doing, not because
I'm interested in doing it, but because I have always had success with
CardBus WITHOUT doing it.

You want to figure out how to do something and share it with the world... Go
for it!

You want to pay someone else to do something difficult for you... Go for it!

Save your judgements for yourself.

2001-06-13 Thread Ralph Mawyer

Now this does open up the question as to why Apple didn't leave
CardBus enabled. I could see it being a problem if it meant adding
parts/labor, but it sounds like both solutions mentioned here are
removing a circuit. Then again, maybe they didn't know they had a
problem until later in production, at which time they fixed the
Japanese Mighty Cats.

LifeIzCoo said
folks, here is low down. This is a fairly simple mod you do to the
motherboards of your 2400! For all the 2400's with the yellow trace
wires, right next to the ram slot there is a longer one and a
shorter one. The longer is for the upper slot, and the shorter one
is for the lower slot, if you simply just cut the wires to both,
your carbus is awaken Tougher part...for the board without the
traces(like mine) its in the same area. there are two resistors
located above the ram slot, look at the picture that ralph have
posted, http://www.ab.aeonnet.ne.jp/~tkishino/Cardbus-j.html, at
c375 and c377 instead of patching those two resistors, MCE simply
removed them...in fact they just clipped it off. what I did was I
use my soldering iron and desoldered and removed those two
resistors, and now the carbus is enabled...took me less than 5
minutes(including the warming of my soldering iron), so very simple
procedure...all have fun...I will not be responsible for anything if
you screw up your motherboard. Anyway all have fun, since Ralph
found that other link, I figured this maybe easier, although I do
not know the difference of the effects of having resistor and not
having one at all, thanks folks. And one more thing:
http://world.altavista.com/; is babelfish is a translator, you can
translate Japnese webpages into okay english that you can grasp most
of the meanings, which makes life a lot easier trying to read the
japnese web pages :) Thanks all sorry for the hassels.
