Re: [DX-CHAT] Availabity of 7O1YGF QSL cards?
I worked the 7O operation just before Iraq invaded Kuwait. The QSL manager was a member of the Kuwaiti royal family which had to flee Kuwait. I had sent a QSL card but figured no chance of getting a confirmation. Four years later I got the card. Amazing!!! 73 Russ W4UBC - Original Message - From: Mike D'Alto d...@optonline.net To: dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 4:37 PM Subject: [DX-CHAT] Availabity of 7O1YGF QSL cards? OK, so I had 5 QSOs with 7O1YGF which I never requested confirmation for. After the 7O1A debacle and my cards being rejected by the DXCC Desk, I decided to take a lets see what happens attitude. I pretty much had given up hope that the 7O1YGF operation would ever be approved after a year or two of not hearing anything, and subsequently put it out of my mind. Naturally, I am now very eager to get these contacts confirmed. This would put me within one click of having worked and confirmed them all. So does anyone know if the original ops have the logs and will answer direct QSL requests? The sources I checked indicate DJ3XD as the route for CW contacts, and DK9KX for SSB RTTY. I've never used LOTW, from what I have read elsewhere, that may become a viable way to receive a confirmation. I'd rather have the actual card. Kicking myself for not having acted when the operation was still recent. What would you do if you were me? vy 73/DX, Mike, K2CD --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Re: [DX-CHAT] Re: Honor Roll, etc.
Good comments John. Especially about 5BWAZ. There's folks sitting with 199 zones who have been there for years waiting for Zone 26, 32 etc. on 80 meters. I have HR DXCC and very close to 5BDXCC but I won't live long enough to get 5BWAZ. 73 Russ W4UBC - Original Message - From: John Warren To: dx-chat dx-chat Sent: Wednesday, January 07, 2009 8:52 AM Subject: [DX-CHAT] Re: Honor Roll, etc. On Jan 7, 2009, at 4:58 AM, DAVE WHITE wrote: However, make the honor roll with 150 watts and a dipole.. I found it interesting to plot my progress toward HR on a semi-log chart, vs time. There are two very distinct phases. Up to 260 countries (say) is one slope, above that there's an inflexion point to a significantly lower rate. Reason : Up to 260, there are always new ones on the bands available to work. Your progress is determined by how much time you're willing to waste on the chase! Above that, it's out of your control - You have to wait for new ones to get QRV. Second comment : DXCC with its Honor Roll are rightly respected as the granddaddy of the major DX awards. But it (and 5BDXCC) are certainly not the toughest. That distinction goes to 5BWAZ. Even though I'm a techie geek, LOTW and eQSL are just two more applications to complicate my already complicated life. I like the look and feel of real cardboard QSL cards, old radios if I have storage space for them (just picked up a RT-524 based VRC-12, 1960s vintage Army mobile VHF FM which happens to have 6m capability - the seller needed rent money and offered it to me at a price I couldn't refuse), turning the VFO for DX, and running my own one-man mini-DXpeditions to VO2 land. Still, IRCs are a lot easier to obtain and exchange for postage than foreign postage stamps. And woe to the op who sends QSL requests without IRC, GS, or especially a SA envelope; he's gonna wait a long time for a response via the Buro. I hate hand addressing envelopes. I'd rather have a root canal. Or go shopping or do laundry. 73 de Fred K2FRD, VO2FS At 2:45 AM + 29/11/06, Charles Harpole wrote: I found out from answering VU4AN/VU3CHE card requests that the easiest and fastest reply went to the one USA guy who had Thailand postage on his self-addressed envelop. Also, to the several Japanese who used their version of international reply ENVELOP. Those were just so nice and easy to drop into the post box on the corner here in Bangkok on my way out to work. Of course, all the other direct cards were taken care of, but I was surprised at myself at the joyful temptation to take care of the one with the Thai stamp so easily. I am sure this would not affect the big DXpeditions with lots of QSL helpers, but my wife and I were chugging away ourselves. BTW, maybe if u are really hot to get a card, a local postage affixed is much more effective than (1) sending multiple cards for the same contact or (2) emailing the DX asking for a special search and reply. I love old-fashioned things CW, tube radios, listening for DX, paper QSLs that arrive with beautiful stamps, rag chewing, tiny DXpeditions running 50 watts to a dipole, and the other things that retain the mystery of ham radio. [DX-CHAT] YL Op at 4O3T
Is it me or was the YL operator for 4O3T having a problem on 15 meter SSB this PM. Her QSO rate was VERY slow and with her accent and very bassy audio it was very difficult to understand what call she was responding to. I heard her say Bravo Charlie twice but could not make out the rest. Please see story below from ARRL. DX still king for 90-year-old radio amateur (Mar 2, 2006) -- Veteran DXer and contester John Thompson, W1BIH, has been largely out of the game since disposing of his tower, antennas and linear and moving into a retirement community in Massachusetts last year. But the DXCC Honor Roll member held onto his transceiver and his desire to work the few rare ones he lacked. When the 3Y0X Peter I DXpedition got under way in February, Don Greenbaum, N1DG, did his older friend a good turn by taking Thompson to his station February 9 for a crack at 3Y0X. During the last two Peter I Island DXpeditions, Thompson was at his winter home, PJ9JT, so Peter I has been among his most wanted. It only took about 30 minutes for W1BIH to make himself heard through the fray on 15-meter SSB and exchange reports. "We got him!" Thompson exclaimed seconds after the quick QSO. Greenbaum captured the occasion on video. Once confirmed and submitted to DXCC, the 3Y0X QSO will elevate W1BIH into a tie for second place in the DXCC standings at 390 entities--including deleted entities--or 335 current entities. DXCC Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, says Thompson currently is in third position mixed at 389 QSOs, and two operators are tied at 391"Nothinggreatiseverachievedwithoutenthusiasm."-RalphWaldoEmerson.

Following all the negative criticism and negative comments about the recent 3YOX fantastic performance I am beggining to wonder if it is at all worthwhile considering this venture. I firmly believe that there is far to much criticism of the events when thay have been put on at extraordinarary costs to the operators involved. The people involved have gone out of their way to provide something rare for the amateur fraternity and all they end up getting is one hell of a lot of criticism. Theindividual operators involved in any major DXpedition sacrificehuge amounts of ther own personal time for the benefit of others internationally. Whilst appreciating that these fellow amateurs do this for the benifit to others, yes there is the element of getting some satisfaction of having been to these remote places. This is never seen to be a benefit of top priority for the operators. So congrads Rod and to the rest of you who have worked Kure and especially if you got them on more than one band and mode. Master Rod wrote: But guys you just can't believe how strong they are here on the southern Oregon coast. And you can't believe how incredibly weak they have been here in the mountains of SW NC. For me that is probably a function that I do NOT have a top of the line setup (high power and an antenna farm the NSA would be proud of). And while it is nice they are going to try and service the EU, it is sad that those of us not equipped with high power and huge antenna farms can't get through the wall of JAs and Big Gun US/EU hams who have already have Kure in their logbooks. The bunch at Kure said, It's up to the DXer to make the QSO by making the most of his or her own skills, wits, and stamina. That is hilarious. They missed the most important part: equipment and lots of money to buy it. The DXpedition said they would base their operating philosophy around a survey taken in a DX magazine. When these sort of DX surveys are taken, they are talking to the big guns on the Honor Roll and others looking to get on the Honor Roll. They do not address the thousands who are the casual DXers that have never even worked Kure Island before. I dare say some hams don't even know where Kure is at. ;-) So when you look at the US ham population and say, they do not need to give us as much time to the US, think about the number of little pistols they are leaving out here in the US. Those of us on the east coast that do not have big setups and high power. We are probably in as much of a disadvantage as some of our EU friends. There are a lot of us who have not had a shot and probably will not have a shot at Kure no matter what happens, because it just isn't in the cards. But from what I have seen and heard over the last four days it is sad so many will not break through any wall, US, JA or EU because so many are trying to fill out and complete their every mode and band sheet. There is nothing more disgusting to me than some big shot DXer bragging on the list or on the air that he worked them on every band and mode, while so many didn't even get sniff on one band or mode. From their website: We are still struggling with a huge amount of physical tasks--antenna commissioning, station protection, moving water and gasoline, working for the resident naturalist, etc. We are very tired, there is limited ability at this moment to respond to individual requests for bands, modes, skeds, etc. Incredible. You elite want them to cater to your individual request to set up a sked or asking them to get on your band so you can fill out a hole? I'm glad some of you have worked them on bands and modes you haven't gotten them on before. And to those of you who worked Kure again on a band or mode you have worked them in the past, I have just one thing to say. Nothing more illustrates my point than this statement from their own website: We expect to make more than 80,000 total radio contacts with 35,000 different persons during the expedition. You do the math, 45,000 contacts to get another band or mode for someone who has probably already worked the country. Their are a lot of us guys out here that would like to work
