Re: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?
They will show up in the control panel and the port number can be changed there to any other unused number so you can probably with a little fiddling around get them all in sequence without skips. i.e. COM1,2,3,4 in a row. If you have ever done this sort of thing in W98 you will come to like XP real quick. 73 Stan, N3HS -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Larry Alkoff Sent: Thursday, September 17, 2009 11:27 AM To: DX4WIN Reflector Subject: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer? [Dx4win] Configuration question
I recently changed to a flat panel monitor and it has a slightly lower resolution than the 19 inch CRT I was using (1280 versus something like 1600 horizontal). As expected when I started DX4WIN, I had to rearrange the various windows to my liking. However, one was off the screen and I couldn't therefore drag it into place. I had the Alt-K/CW input screen on the lower right side and I suspect that it is somewhere off the screen in that direction. Anyway, the usual trick is to delete the associate ini file (as I have done many times with Writelog) and reconfigure. It looked to me like the DX4WIN.CFG file played this role so deleted it and found that I could do the screen manipulations OK, the log was messed up. I have two groups of QSOs, one with my old callsign and the other with my current one. All the group 1 QSOs (i.e. all recent ones) were no longer showing and the Filter selection and edit group names pull downs were greyed out such that I couldn't do anything to work with the groups to get the log to show right. Looking for suggestions as to how to get the Alt-K window back or any other alternate suggestions on why the deletion of the DX4WIN.CFG file messed things up so much. Thanks 73 Stan, N3HS

Since this is an option I have wanted for some time, I looked at the links and would like to point out a somewhat misleading statement in the top of the page of the first link. It states: For the record MMTTY is not included in the DX4WIN install software because the AUTHOR of MMTTY JE3HHT doesn't allow this. While this is technically correct, there is no need to distribute it with DX4WIN. All that is need is an interface program such as that which exists for Writelog. With that interface program installed MMTTY seems to work very well with Writelog. I wish I were capable of writing such an interface, but my programming days are way behind me. Therefore I wait for some more creative person to do it. While on this soap box, I tend to use HamScope as a shell from which to run MMTTY. As a side thought that may help some, when I set this system up I wanted to use the motherboard sound card for Ham and a Sound Blaster for normal sound. I had to go to system properties and disable the on-board sound card to get the system to use the Sound Blaster as it's default. Most of us have learned that the index numbers assigned to sound boards go along with their physical installation. So that a sound board on the mother board would be [0], the first card I install would be [1] and the second would be [2]. But in WinXP there are two different orderings of the list on sound devices. If you have WinXP open the volume control applet that we all use to adjust the volume for record and playback. Compare that list of devices (goes along with physical installation) with the list that you get from the Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. Here you can change the default device which always becomes index [0] moving the index used to get to the other cards. So the indexes that MMTTY and older versions of Writelog (before the new WlSbControl which lets you pick the exact card you want to use) are often off by one depending on how you have the default devices set. [Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited
The message seems to be that one size doesn't fit all. I know that I have seen similar things to those reported here. Possibly it is because I didn't understand the details of how it actually works, but I found stations I wanted to work way low down in the priorities (i.e. my priorities did not match those which 6.02 has build in). 73 Stan, N3HS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Wednesday, September 03, 2003 4:43 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited Thanks for the feedback. My prior analysis is included at the end for those who can't remember. I think it was Mel VE2DC who pointed out that there is an option to highlight unconfirmed new entities as if they are unworked, so #1 changes a little. Would it be nice to be fully configurable? Sure! Is it likely to happen? Probably not. The most requested switch seems to be to choose whether band spots have priority over mode spots, or vice versa (default right now is mode over band). So I hope Paul can fix the priority 3/4 problem (unworked band entity should have priority over worked mode entity), as well as add this new switch. This should satisfy 95% of the users. If you don't care about band or mode awards, go into your DXCC prefernces and turn these awards off. 73 - Jim AD1C I think I boiled the priorities down to three simple rules: 1. All-time never worked has the highest priority. 2. When both entities are unworked or both entities are worked but not confirmed, mode has priority over band. 3. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority over the worked entity. The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these requirements: 1 =3D never worked 2 =3D never worked mode 3 =3D never worked band 4 =3D unconfirmed mode 5 =3D unconfirmed band =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.com PGP Fingerprint: D8E2 3D78 339F A7F1 8C13 1193 B5D1 4FB6 79D1 70DC ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win
[Dx4win] Curious rotor control problem
I just started having a curious rotor control problem. When I click on a spot to enter it into the log entry window, the rotor control works just fine. If I just click on the spot once to have its country, bearing, etc. show in the add real time mode, the rotor controls do not work. If I then manually enter the callsign, etc that double clicking on the spot would place in the entry window, it still does not work. The funny thing is that it did a week ago. Reinstalling DX4WIN 6.02 does not seem to help. Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Computer is an Athlon 1500, 512 MB RAM, 30 20 GB hard disks, Windows XP Pro. 73 Stan, N3HS
[Dx4win] 6.02 failure - Exception on startup
OK, now I have not only reinstalled 6.02 over the first install, but then uninstalled it, ran Norton to clean up the registry, rebooted run Norton again, rebooted and reinstalled what should have been a clean install. Moved the N3HS.KEY File over, merged the INI file, etc. and it all seemed right in that I couldn't change my name or callsign in preferences, BUT it still is in demo mode and will not allow me to save my log. As of right now 6.02 is COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. 73 Stan, N3HS -Original Message- From: Stan Staten [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2003 7:33 PM To: 'dx4win@mailman.qth.net' Subject: RE: [Dx4win] Problem in 6.02 - Exception on startup Well, I thought that I had everything working right. The N3HS.KEY file is in the right place and the usual things like radio, packet, etc seem to work. Merging the 5.03 *.INI file went smooth although not everything came over right - CW and rotator for example had to be reset. I cannot save the log as it still thinks it is in the DEMO mode and the exception happens each time I start DX4WIN. Had to re-do the rotator a couple of times and the CW keying when that didn't come over with the INI file. Now both rotator and CW seem to work and the radio and packet worked right off. I have not tried setting the packet spots to see if the country worked but not confirmed is there as I had hoped since I wanted to make sure that the basics were working OK. I just re-installed 6.02 to see if that fixed it and it didn't. The reinstall noted as it went along that the N3HS.KEY file was there and I had hoped that all was well. I have been suspicious of it being my fault as I re-arranged the shack over the holidays and although everything seemed to work, when I have had 6.02 problems like with the rotator, I went to Writelog to confirm that my interface was set up and working. I am using XP Pro and have been so for some number of months and that didn't seem to be a problem with 5.03. 73 Stan, N3HS -Original Message- From: Mel Martin (VE2DC) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2003 4:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Dx4win] Problem in 6.02 I've been watching pretty carefully Stan... When I start DXWIN I get an exception error in the form of an access violation at 00515d07. Also so far, rotor control doesn't work. (I checked it in 5.03 just to make sure that I hadn't messed things up in the upgrade. Since I have been gone I have missed the chatter on the issues when 6.01 and am looking for suggestions. I did search the archive for error or exception and found nothing so I guess I don't mind bothering the assembled group. [Dx4win] Where can I get 5.03

[Dx4win] Serial Cards available + other stuff
Figured with all the discussion of serial cards and COM ports in here is appropriate to dispose or two that are surplus to me needs. New computer has no ISA slots and also wont accept the LAVA DSerial 550 PCI. S - hate to throw them out - they are available - make offer. As another point, does anyone know if the SIIG cards will work in an ABIT KG7 motherboard. Finally learned something today about my USB serial adapter. It is the one from Palm intended for use with my Palm Pilot, but seems to work with other serial applications as well. The thing that surprised me in my first use of a USB -- Serial converter, the program did not set the com port parameters. I had to go into the control panels and set the flow control and baud rate. Possibly this might have caused others problems so I thought I would mention it. 73 Stan, N3HS
