Re: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?

2009-09-17 Thread Stan Staten
They will show up in the control panel and the port number can be changed
there to any other unused number so you can probably with a little fiddling
around get them all in sequence without skips. i.e. COM1,2,3,4 in a row. If
you have ever done this sort of thing in W98 you will come to like XP real
quick.

Subject: [Dx4win] How to identify serial ports on new computer?

My trusty old Windows 98SE computer was destroyed by lightning.

I have pressed into service a reliable Windows XP Pro computer.
Since it only has 1 serial port, I installed a CyberPro PCI 4S which
contains 4 serial ports, 2 on a PCI board and 2 more on a bracket that
plugs into the PCI card.

The additional ports are labled serial 8 through 11.

How can I identify the extra serial ports so I can assign them in DX4Win
to rig control, Rigblaster and MMTTY?

I really don't want to plug serial ports in willy-nilly because I fear
breaking something.

I have a break-out box and may try jumpering serial pins 2 and 3 to see
if any lights blink but I'm hoping for another method.

Please help, _ really need Glorioso!

Re: [Dx4win] Auto Packet Connection Services

2009-02-24 Thread Stan Staten
To auto-logon, look at TweakUI which you can d/l from Microsoft as part of
their Power Toys. It allows you to specify a name and password for auto
logon. Then put a shortcut to DX4WIN in your startup folder and you will
see XP start and then DX4WIN shortly thereafter.

Two questions:

1. Is it possible to configure DX4WIN to automatically connect to a
cluster (VE7CC)?

2. Is there some way to have DX4WIN start when the computer boots and
NOT wait until I log in (like setting it up as a service)?

Is your PORTMAP.INI file the same in 7.01 and 7.02?

Have you tried swapping each radio to the other COM port?

If everything is the same, and it doesn't work, perhaps Paul broke

Actually, I downloaded the new version and filled out the order.txt and
faxed it Tuesday morning. I received my key Tuesday afternoon. So they
are working the orders.

I'm with you Alan. I have a bunch to work on RTTY and instead of working
them and then opening DX4Win to log them, I can do it all in one fell
swoop. It's a great addition.

Version 7.01 was on sale at Dayton this past weekend. They did not
want to create a problem by having to support what they were doing at
Dayton plus the online users. They should have it up on their web
page before much longer, though. Paul sent out an e-mail yesterday
stating their case about doing this. All I can tell you right now is
that you will have to wait until they are caught up from Dayton and
get the web page updated. It seems to have not been a very big deal
to the folks that have everything worked on RTTY because I got some
smirk e-mails from some of those guys stating so what. But the
addition of MMTTY to it is a big plus to me because I still to work
190 more countries on RTTY to have them all. I enjoy having RTTY
QSO's whether I need it as a new country or not and this version makes

 it much simpler.

[Dx4win] Configuration question

2005-03-30 Thread Stan Staten
I recently changed to a flat panel monitor and it has a slightly lower
resolution than the 19 inch CRT I was using (1280 versus something like
1600 horizontal). As expected when I started DX4WIN, I had to rearrange
the various windows to my liking. However, one was off the screen and I
couldn't therefore drag it into place. I had the Alt-K/CW input screen
on the lower right side and I suspect that it is somewhere off the
screen in that direction. Anyway, the usual trick is to delete the
associate ini file (as I have done many times with Writelog) and
reconfigure. It looked to me like the DX4WIN.CFG file played this role
so deleted it and found that I could do the screen manipulations OK, the
log was messed up. I have two groups of QSOs, one with my old callsign
and the other with my current one. All the group 1 QSOs (i.e. all
recent ones) were no longer showing and the Filter selection and edit
group names pull downs were greyed out such that I couldn't do anything
to work with the groups to get the log to show right. Looking for
suggestions as to how to get the Alt-K window back or any other
alternate suggestions on why the deletion of the DX4WIN.CFG file messed
things up so much.

2005-01-25 Thread Stan Staten
Following discussions here, I have started to use the VE7CC program. It
is really neat in that I can simultaneously connect to a specific

having a filter proglem. I have set the cluster to pass origination CTY
spots for K, VE, XE and when I telnet into the cluster directly from
DX4WIN all seems to work as expected. However, when I use VE7CC I get
all spots, independent of filters to DX4WIN. I ewven printed out the AR

What am I doing wrong.

[Dx4win] MMTTY

2004-11-20 Thread Stan Staten
Since this is an option I have wanted for some time, I looked at the links
and would like to point out a somewhat misleading statement in the top of
the page of the first link. It states: For the record MMTTY is not
included in the DX4WIN install software because the AUTHOR of MMTTY JE3HHT
doesn't allow this. While this is technically correct, there is no need to
distribute it with DX4WIN. All that is need is an interface program such as
that which exists for Writelog. With that interface program installed MMTTY
seems to work very well with Writelog. I wish I were capable of writing
such an interface, but my programming days are way behind me. Therefore I
wait for some more creative person to do it. While on this soap box, I tend
to use HamScope as a shell from which to run MMTTY. Since HamScope does
more than RTTY, I use it in conjunction with DX4WIN all the time. An
interface with it would also be very nice to have.

Tom,

If you read my documents about hardware and software configurations, you
will see references to a dual comm port null modem cable arrangement. If
you are running Windows NT or XP, you can replace that mess with a simple
piece of free software that functions as a virtual null modem cable.

Since writing those instructions, I have settled on a routine in which I use

MMTTY in stand-alone mode for day-to-day RTTY operations, and enable the
RTTY feature in DX4WIN for contests.

Keep in mind, of course, that this setup is a bit of a kludge -- the elegant

solution will arrive when Paul inserts true MMTTY integration into DX4WIN --

which he has listed as a future enhancement (no delivery date).

I don't think you understand what it means.

How would you feel when you order/buy DX4WIN and sended to you by mail

you be disappointed if the needed plugin for MMTTY is there but not MMTTY

This is why Paul didn't release DX4WIN with an interface for MMTTY, with

top of the screen as one would expect as more text is received.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Once the detailed volumn control (i.e. the one with multiple controls
which you can get to by right clicking on the sound icon in the tray as
well as othe ways), look at properties. You can select which sound card
you are changing parameters for and whether it is audio out or in.

As a side thought that may help some, when I set this system up I wanted
to use the motherboard sound card for Ham and a Sound Blaster for normal
sound. I had to go to system properties and disable the on-board sound
card to get the system to use the Sound Blaster as it's default. Then
after rebooting, I re-enabled the on-board sound card and all has been
well. If I recall right though the on-board sound card is now number 2
with the SB being 1 and no card as 0.

would be [2].

But in WinXP there are two different orderings of the list on sound
devices. If you have WinXP open the volume control applet that we all
use
to adjust the volume for record and playback. Compare that list of
devices
(goes along with physical installation) with the list that you get from
the
Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. Here you can change the default

device which always becomes index [0] moving the index used to get to
the
other cards.

So the indexes that MMTTY and older versions of Writelog (before the new

WlSbControl which lets you pick the exact card you want to use) are
often
off by one depending on how you have the default devices set.

If you only have one sound card this is not a concern

Nice consistent software???

See you all in NAQP

(0), (1), . . . . are assigned to specific cards irrespective of which

When you assigned (-1) and (0), you like picked the same card and after

its handle was assigned, you attempted to reassign it and got an error
message.

[Dx4win] QSL lookups

2004-02-23 Thread Stan Staten
This is the resource I used when I last printed QSL cards. Found more
managers there than were printed from DX4WIN. It was great and seems to
be kept current. Was a lot of help and is now my first reference when I
want to know a manager.

[Dx4win] Confused About Spot Prioritization

2004-02-11 Thread Stan Staten
I guess I really don't know how to make the spot prioritization work for
me. I have the following problems:

1. I am working to increase the confirmed band count (i.e. 5 band DXCC
is a goal). I have the alert unconfirmed country checked on the packet
preferences, yet I see unconfirmed country/band combinations show up in
priorities 1,3 and 5. I thought that they would show up as priority 1.
Clearly I do not know how to make it work for me. See also the next one
which really tends to mess up the screen when there is a lot going on.

2. Priority 2 seems to dominate the screen. I am not interested in it
right now and don't know how to get it off the screen or at least out of
the way. I have to make the spot window almost full height on a 19 inch
monitor and the proirity 2 spots frequently push ones I want off the
screen unless I manually delete them. Deleting spots over 2 hours old
helps a bit, but doesn't solve the problem when things are active.

What am I doing wrong and how do I configure to get what I want?

Thanks

[Dx4win] Log window column width

2004-01-27 Thread Stan Staten
Is there a way to change the displayed column width of the logbook.
Seems I did it before but since restoring from a recent HD crash it
defauts to wider widths than I want crowding up my screen.

[Dx4win] Log window column width

2004-01-27 Thread Stan Staten
That is what I used to do and when I reopened DX4WIN it stayed that way.
Now it doesn't but reverts to the default widths. It does work for the
spot window, but I can't seem to get it to work on the logbook window.

You just 'drag' it to whatever size you want the window to be--

Move your mouse/cursor over the corners/edges of the box until you see
the cursor change to a double arrow -- once you have that double arrow,
simply hold down your left mouse button and 'drag' the box larger or
smaller -- wider or narrower, full screen size or smaller, etc.

That is all I ever have to do to make ANY of the several drop down
windows within DX4WIN screens to whatever size I want --- including the
windows for the log, or the WAS credit, or the County, of the Grid
square or the DXCC window, etc.

I suspect this is NOT what you were asking but thought I would answer
according to how I understood your message --

Good luck

[Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited

2003-09-03 Thread Stan Staten
The message seems to be that one size doesn't fit all. I know
that I have seen similar things to those reported here. Possibly
it is because I didn't understand the details of how it actually
works, but I found stations I wanted to work way low down in the
priorities (i.e. my priorities did not match those which 6.02 has
build in).

Thanks for the feedback. My prior analysis is included at the
end for those
who can't remember. I think it was Mel VE2DC who pointed out
that there is an
option to highlight unconfirmed new entities as if they are
unworked, so #1
changes a little.

Would it be nice to be fully configurable? Sure! Is it likely
to happen?
Probably not. The most requested switch seems to be to choose
whether band
spots have priority over mode spots, or vice versa (default right
now is mode
over band).

So I hope Paul can fix the priority 3/4 problem (unworked band
entity should
have priority over worked mode entity), as well as add this new
switch. This
should satisfy 95% of the users. If you don't care about band or
mode awards,
go into your DXCC prefernces and turn these awards off.

73 - Jim AD1C

I think I boiled the priorities down to three simple rules:

1. All-time never worked has the highest priority.

2. When both entities are unworked or both entities are
worked but not confirmed, mode has priority over band.

3. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked
but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority
 over the worked entity.

The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these
requirements:

   1 =3D never worked
   2 =3D never worked mode
   3 =3D never worked band
   4 =3D unconfirmed mode
   5 =3D unconfirmed band

[Dx4win] Curious rotor control problem

2003-08-30 Thread Stan Staten
I just started having a curious rotor control problem. When I
click on a spot to enter it into the log entry window, the rotor
control works just fine. If I just click on the spot once to
have its country, bearing, etc. show in the add real time mode,
the rotor controls do not work. If I then manually enter the
callsign, etc that double clicking on the spot would place in the
entry window, it still does not work. The funny thing is that it
did a week ago. Reinstalling DX4WIN 6.02 does not seem to help.
Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Computer is an
Athlon 1500, 512 MB RAM, 30 20 GB hard disks, Windows XP Pro.

[Dx4win] 6.02 failure - Exception on startup

2003-02-09 Thread Stan Staten
OK, now I have not only reinstalled 6.02 over the first install,
but then uninstalled it, ran Norton to clean up the registry,
rebooted run Norton again, rebooted and reinstalled what should
have been a clean install. Moved the N3HS.KEY File over, merged
the INI file, etc. and it all seemed right in that I couldn't
change my name or callsign in preferences, BUT it still is in
demo mode and will not allow me to save my log. As of right now
6.02 is COMPLETELY UNUSABLE.

Well, I thought that I had everything working right. The
N3HS.KEY file is in the right place and the usual things like
radio, packet, etc seem to work. Merging the 5.03 *.INI file
went smooth although not everything came over right - CW and
rotator for example had to be reset. I cannot save the log as it
still thinks it is in the DEMO mode and the exception happens
each time I start DX4WIN. Had to re-do the rotator a couple of
times and the CW keying when that didn't come over with the INI
file. Now both rotator and CW seem to work and the radio and
packet worked right off. I have not tried setting the packet
spots to see if the country worked but not confirmed is there as
I had hoped since I wanted to make sure that the basics were
working OK. I just re-installed 6.02 to see if that fixed it and
it didn't. The reinstall noted as it went along that the N3HS.KEY
file was there and I had hoped that all was well. I have been
suspicious of it being my fault as I re-arranged the shack over
the holidays and although everything seemed to work, when I have
had 6.02 problems like with the rotator, I went to Writelog to
confirm that my interface was set up and working. I am using XP
Pro and have been so for some number of months and that didn't
seem to be a problem with 5.03.

I've been watching pretty carefully Stan... And I haven' seen
anything
similar to what you are describing.

Do you get the error every time you start?

I would verify setting for LTP and COM ports as there have been a
number
of changes in this area. You might try disabling some stuff to
see if
the exception is coupled to a particular feature...

I've been gone for the last few weeks and just got back and
around to
updating 5.03 to 6.02. When I start DXWIN I get an exception
error in
the form of an access violation at 00515d07. Also so far, rotor
control
doesn't work. (I checked it in 5.03 just to make sure that I
hadn't
messed things up in the upgrade. Since I have been gone I have
missed
the chatter on the issues when 6.01 and am looking for
suggestions. I
did search the archive for error or exception and found
nothing so I
guess I don't mind bothering the assembled group.

Is there any reason that one cannot use a wye connector out of
the back
of the rig's key jack (in this case a 1000MP) and hook both a set
of
paddles and the LPT1 connection to the station PC? The LPT1
circuit is
the one shown in the Help file of DX4WIN, using a 2N.

[Dx4win] Serial Cards available + other stuff

2002-01-16 Thread Stan Staten
Figured with all the discussion of serial cards and COM ports in here is
appropriate to dispose or two that are surplus to me needs. New computer
has no ISA slots and also wont accept the LAVA DSerial 550 PCI. S -
hate to throw them out - they are available - make offer.

As another point, does anyone know if the SIIG cards will work in an ABIT
KG7 motherboard.

Finally learned something today about my USB serial adapter. It is the one
from Palm intended for use with my Palm Pilot, but seems to work with other
serial applications as well. The thing that surprised me in my first use
of a USB -- Serial converter, the program did not set the com port
parameters. I had to go into the control panels and set the flow control
and baud rate. Possibly this might have caused others problems so I
thought I would mention it.
