[Dx4win] Updated dx4win.awd dx4win.tcp

2005-08-09 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
Hi all,

I just looked over the DX4Win awards file that Hamad has been working
on, and it looks like he's done a very good job. But, I noted that
the two big lighthouse awards were missing. The Amateur Radio
Lighthouse Society (ARLHS), and the World Lighthouses On The Air
(WLOTA). The ARLHS list is big, 10,000+, and unless you're chasing
lights you probably don't want it. But, if you do, you can find it,
the WLOTA, the Canadian Islands Award (CIsA), and the Islands of
Scotland Award (IOSA) on my web page, along with instructions on how
to update the DX4Win.awd file.

I try to keep these files up-to-date, and you can check for the date
that I last updated them. I'm due to update both the USIA and CIsA
files by the end of August.

My web page is at: http://home.neo.rr.com/tsarah/www/w8tts.html

go to http://www.9k2hn.com and you will find it next to the DX4WIN link
in the bottom of the page. what you have to do is backup your current
files (dx4win.tcp dx4win.awd) then unzip the file in your save
directory and when it asks you to over wright say yes and restart you
DX4WIN and every thing will be fine. let me know if you face any
 problems.

Today while working on the country file, AX0MT on Macquarie came and went
on 40 meter SSB. That would have been a new band country for me, but I
didn't know. There was no red bar across my DX spots window because AX0MT
wasn't in the country file yet! Special prefix for Australia Day.

I hope some of you worked this rare one. Just because I'm working on this

[Dx4win] Setting the Uplaod flag

2004-11-08 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
Back before DX4Win had the ability to track and do the LoTW upload, I
did my whole log manually. Now, I'm trying to go through and set the
Upload flag to Y so that I can then set the Upload Date. But, when I
follow the instructions posted by AD1C
(http://www.ad1c.com/dx4win/#LoTW) I get 3,291 QSO's changed. Now, if I
go back and do a select on those with the Upload Flag still set to N I
get 8,908. No matter what I do, short of changing them all manually, I
can not get the flag on those QSO's set to Y.

Anyone have any ideas how I can set these flags to Y?

Larry,

Sounds like you missed one step (and this would have been without a filter,
as it involved your entire log the first time, but it also works with and is
necessary even with a filter set):

Labels -- Set upload flags

That will set the upload date. The reason that's important to you is that
later you can filter on that field to find any entries that have not yet
been uploaded by doing an F9 search and entering 01/01/1901 in that field.

You can still go back and do that now. You just don't have to upload the
file to LoTW (obviously).

upload confirmed QSOs.

I uploaded 15,761 QSOs to LoTW. I got 1,962 upload confirmed QSOs in
response. All seems good, except the upload date is still blank. Is the
upload date supposed to be filled in when I created the DX4WIN extract ADIF
file, or does it get filled in when I import the upload confirmed QSOs?

In other words - it DX4WIN's upload date tracking when I _sent_ the QSOs
to ARRL's big database, or when I _receive_ a confirmation that one of mine
got a match? And... what action on my part actually enters the date? {please
don't suggest that I  have to hand-enter 1,961 dates... ;-}

[Dx4win] LoTW problems

2004-05-15 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
I think I may have a handle on this. It appears that it has something
to do with the way that QSL Method is set. Everything below was done
with no filters set.

To start with, I have QSL Methods set as follows:

216 to QSL Service
1,419 to Buro
1,032 to Direct
405 to
208 to Other
8,933 to Ignore

Which adds up to the 12,213 QLOs in my log.

When I do the Label|Set Upload Flags, I get 3,268 QSLs changed

Now, if I do a QSO|Multiple QSOs Operations|Set QSL Method, and set
everything to Buro, I get Changed 8,299 QSOs, and a break down as
follows:

128 to QSL Service
9,718 to Buro
912 to Direct
318 to
165 to Other
909 to Ignore

or, a total of 12,150 QSOs with a QSL Method. Where the other 63 are, I
have no idea.

Now, this time when I do the Label|Set Upload Flags, I get 11,290 QSLs
changed. That's 923 less QSOs than my log contains. Why those didn't
get changed, I have no idea. But, it appears that setting the Upload
Flag has something to do with QSL Method. I hope that this will give
Paul an idea when he gets back from Dayton.

Yes, Ted, the steps outlined by Paul worked here for the Samplelog. This
brings up a question I have:

Do you folks that have done this to their log set up a special log just

 for

LoTW downloads? I'm real nervous about downloading into my present clean

yeah.

Sure sounds to me, after reading all these threads, that we need to wait
till after Dayton and maybe get some real instructions in the User's Guide

Hi Rick,

There was a thread going about this. And, a number of us were having a
problem doing it. We weren't getting the same results Paul was getting.
And, with Paul and Steve at Dayton, the thread has kind of stopped
until he returns. But here is what he said to do...

Paul van der Eijk wrote:
  1. Open samplelog.dxl
  2. File | Info; 5538 QSOs
  3. QSO | Filter Select upload = Y; no QSOs found
  4. Labels | Set upload flags; I get 5538 QSOs
  5. Labels | Export for LOTW (no filter or selection active)
  6. Takes no time it seems :)
  7. File new log (I'm not saving the modified log)
  8. File import (ADIF) I read 5538 QSOs

Now, when a couple of us did this with the sample log, we got the same
results he did. But, when we did it against our own logs we didn't get
what we expected. For example, I have 12,000+ QSOs in my log, and only
got 3,280 QSOs changed, not the 12,213 that I expected. I even tried
doing a filter before hand, and got the same results.

Guess we have to wait for Paul and Steve to come back from Dayton.

73 - Ted - W8TTS

Rick Murphy K1MU wrote:

OK, I'm kinda confused about what to do when importing from LoTW.

I've uploaded my log from 6.02, so what I need to do now is two
things: 1. Mark the QSOs in my current log as uploaded. 2. Download
from LoTW so the confirmations there are marked properly.

The help file is less than helpful. There's no LoTW in the index,
and the Export for LOTW topic starts with

Export all QSOs marked for upload to an ADIF file. The ADIF file

i.e. it ends in the middle of a sentence.

For download, do I generate an ADIF report from LoTW for just QSLs,
or for all QSOs? Do I import this using an ADIF import, into my
current log?

How do I mark what I've already uploaded so they don't get uploaded
again? -Rick

One thing that I noted with some of Joe's errors, is that the call

look alike in some fonts, so it's an easy mistake.

I just submitted my log to the ARRL LOTW, and ended up with these
errors. About half of my log went through OK before hitting the maximum
number of allowed errors. Looks like there needs to be a few automatic

[Dx4win] LOTW Test

2003-05-17 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
One thing that the guy at LOTW told me was, they really want input
from anyone that beta tests. So, what ever kind of problems that you
run across, send them a detailed email to the address on the LOTW home
page: http://p1k.arrl.org/lotw/default To get signed up, go to:
www.arrl.org/lotw

So far I haven't found it very user friendly. Yes, it's only beta.
But, I have a couple of friends that use computers for logging, and
are as computer literate as a brick. I would hate to have to try and
explain how to use LOTW to them. Hopefully, by the time they are
ready to release a full version, they will have it so there is only
one step to get a certificate and one to upload a log.

SV: [Dx4win] DX Spots Window

2003-02-21 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
You will note that the DX4WIN.PUT file comes and goes. It is only
there when there are spots in the DX spot window. If you exit DX4Win
without clearing the spots the .PUT file remains with spots. If you
clear the spots and don't exit DX4Win the .PUT file remains. If you
clear the spots and then exit DX4Win the file is renamed to
DX4WIN.~UP, thereby effectively deleting it. You can delete the ~UT
file and the .PUT file will be recreated the next time a spot is
placed in the DX spot window. At least that's the way it works here.
BTW, I use the DX-Telnet interface.

Another observation is that all spots from internet are lost after
exit from DX4WIN. When I use my normal set-up to the local

Now the two cases are identical i.e. spots are lost when opening
DX4WIN again, v 6.02. I have the impression that it was ok in the
beginning, there are spots saved from from Feb. 9 and 10. This has
nothing to do with checking 'Leave all windows in original position'
in Preferences/Screen.I think it is of value to save earlier
spots in this window to check where a station has been operating etc.

Paul, please put it back in the next version, it works ok in v 5.03.

Now, I got the idea to reinstall 6.02 and found that it didn't help.
In DX4WIN.put there are a bunch of spots from start and they remain
but all spots added, coming from internet or local 144 MHz link, are
   gone after restarting DX4WIN.

[Dx4win] Terminal Program for DX Clusters

2003-02-15 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
Good Morning Bruce,

I've been a very happy user of DX-Telnet for a long time. It's a very
flexible program with lots of goodies, that aren't hard to get up and
running, including a startup routine that starts DX-Telnet, a
handshake program, and then DX4Win. It's very stable, the last update
was almost a year ago. Take a look at:

http://www.qsl.net/wd4ngb/telnet.htm

It's not shareware, but there is a one time registration fee. And,
the author is VERY helpful.

The usual disclaimer, I have no financial interest in either DX4Win or
DX-Telnet. Just a happy user.

In looking at Window|Log and then right clicking on the report, the
pick list has Write to File grayed out. Is this because I'm still

[Dx4win] Using the QRZ database from the HD

2002-12-27 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
As an aside to this. I think that the RAC instal looks to see if a
previous version was installed and then asks if you want it to replace
the old one in the same directory. If I remember correctly that's the
way the install of this last version went. My RAC is in directory
C:\RAC with four sub directories under that: DATA, HELP, LABELS32, and
TEXTE.

 Steve and all, I have QRZ installed here and working fine. Do as follows;
Using the standard installation, the QRZ CD installs to C:\Program Files\QRZ
Ham Radio. Then, if you don't wish to use the CD-Rom for access to data
files, you need to create a directory on your C:\ drive called callbk and
then copy everything from the CD-Rom sub directory callbk to the new
directory on your hard drive called callbk. You can highlight all from the
CD directory callbk and drag and drop it onto the hard drive directory
callbk or use DOS commands copy *.* for copying, and then set Preferences
in DX4WIN Ext Data to a Data Source of QRZ CDRom and the Data Directory
to C:\ It should then work fine and data will be almost instantaneous also.

  Hello all,

Hope everyone had a good holiday. Paul and I spent part of ours working
 on
  version 6, FYI.

A user of DX4WIN, N8XG, is trying to get the program to work with his QRZ
database, which has been installed on his hard disk.

He told me that he had the CD ROM do the installation (from a menu choice)
to the HD, so I assume that it has been installed in the 'standard'
  location, as intended by QRZ

If it is in the 'standard' location, can someone please tell me (us) what
the path would be. I have never used or seen QRZ, so I am really in the
 dark.

I figured it would be easier to ask those who have it working, than trying
it without actually seeing what I'm suggesting.
  Any suggestions?

[Dx4win] Staying Connected to TELNET

2002-11-05 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
I use DX-Telnet through a cable modem (Road Runner) and don't have any
problem staying connected. I did earlier, do to the way it was
connected to my laptop, but that's another issue. I have the clusters
that I use, set up to be pinged every 10 minutes as a keep alive.
And, it works like a charm.

To stop the unwanted attempted connections from various unknown
urls, I use a D-Link Cable/DSL Internet Gateway between the cable
modem and the PC.

I have a high speed cable connection that works great for the
  Internet. No problems!
When connecting to a DX cluster via TELNET (with DX4WIN) and the
activity is somewhat slow, I seem to get disconnected. During
peak times such as contests I stay connected just fine. I
understand there is a so called keep alive option either in
DX4WIN or some other outside source. The idea is to keep the
traffic moving. If windows isn't seeing any traffic from you,
(some ISP's as well.) disconnect you so others can use the IP
you were on. Is there a setting in DX4WIN using the TCP/IP
setting with this so called keep alive feature? Please advise. TNX, 73 STU

 Please respond to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have noticed that normally I lose my connection in about an hour.

My experiments indicate that the reason is that somehow Telnet
attracts a swarm of attempted connections from various unknown
urls that overload the ability of Telnet to keep itself alive.

Various methods of sending keep alive signals have made no
 difference.

I maintain two machines - one is Linux. If I establish a Telnet
connection under DX4Win and set the Linux machine to monitor
connections using tcpdump which is included in most Linux
distributions, I can clearly see the attempted connections building
up - to as many as hundreds per second!

This is a classic DOS (Denial of Service) attack. Most people
would be unaware of the attack unless they are running an analysis
 tool like tcpdump.

I've tried nearly a dozen different Telnet sites - the result has
 always been the same.
That is why I'm looking for a good http site that does automatic
 refreshes.

My connection is a 24 hour cablemodem (Time-Warner of Austin TX
RoadRunner) and I think that kind of connection is attractive to
the kind of people doing this.
They can easily tell it's Time-Warner from the first few digits of
 the IP address.

Many have complained about the difficulty of keeping their Telnet
 connection up.
 Hope this information helps others.

[Dx4win] Staying Connected to TELNET

2002-11-05 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
Hi Larry,

I think the main reason that I don't loose my cluster connections is
because I use the ping (Stay Alive) option of DX-Telnet. Even on slow
spot days, it pings once ever 10 minutes and keeps the connection
active. I can stay connected for a VERY long time this way.

[Dx4win] Staying Connected to TELNET

2002-11-05 Thread Ted Sarah - W8TTS
Hi Jim,

It all depends on the filtering that you have setup on your nodes, and
what kind of activity there is, and what good old Sol is up to. When
the solar indexes are bad, I've seen an hour go by without a spot, I
only look at North America and HF. I use W8GN, K8SMC, and others.
So, yes there can be little traffic at times.

73 - Ted - W8TTS

Jim Reisert wrote:

Are you guys on nodes with very little traffic?

I can connect to W1GQ, KE9KD and K8SMC (also N2TX before it moved) for days at
a time, and I'm not actively pinging the connection. In fact, I have two
computers connected to two different nodes while I'm at work all day (one
wired, one wireless). The only time I lose a connection is if the remote node
goes down, or something happens to my router or cable modem. Using ATT
 Broadband Internet.

I don't filter out much besides the stuff above 2 meters. I like to see spots
 from all over the world.

[Dx4win] Clock error

 Pete,

Are you saying that the clock was once accurate, but is now inaccurate? I
have never had that happen. I have owned my fair share of computers with
off-tolerance crystals that kept lousy time, but they kept the same lousy
 time all their lives.

Have you changed your processor lately, or altered the BIOS setting of the
PC to super-clock the CPU? That will cause wildly-inaccurate clock timing.

My PC's clock is reasonably accurate, but to avoid any log-time problems I
run the free utility from NIST for PC clock management. This program
auto-magically synchronizes your PC clock to WWV at regular intervals (the
interval set by you) You can download it from www.time.gov.

Help -- the computer I use for TRLog and DX4WIN(a 200 MMX Pentium) has
started losing about 12 seconds an hour in its real-time clock -- for
example, I set it this morning from the Internet, and when I can back 3

For the new users and as a reminder for the older users. If you chase
lighthouses and/or islands, you can find the most current DX4Win
awards files for the following:

Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS)
Canadian Islands Awards (CISA)
Islands of Scotland Awards (IOSA)
U.S. Islands Awards (USIA)
World Lighthouse Award (WLHA)

at: http://w8tts.com/www/w8tts.html

There is also instructions on how to update the DX4Win.awd file. And,
I attempt to keep this as up-to-date as I can.
