[edx-code] OEP announcements will now be going to https://discuss.openedx.org

2019-09-03 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi,

I've just updated OEP-0001
, the
process for writing Open edX Proposals. Authors used to send announcements
of new OEPs and their reviews to this mailing list. Now the announcements
will be made as posts in the Announcements - Architecture category
 on Discourse.

If you want to continue to receive these announcements as emails, you can
create a Discourse account and sign up for email notifications with these
instructions:
https://discuss.openedx.org/t/how-to-get-emails-for-announcements/365

Thanks,

[edx-code] Announcements will soon be going to https://discuss.openedx.org

2019-08-28 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hey all,

As you may have heard, we have a Discourse forum set up at
https://discuss.openedx.org . Our plan is to close these mailing lists,
and use that forum instead.

Announcements that used to come to this list will be posted in Discourse
instead. Soon we'll be posting messages in this list about specific types
of announcements, and where you'll be able to find them in Discourse.

If you have opinions about this switch, I've started a topic for your
feedback: Discourse replacing email announcements: opinions?

If
you are so opposed to Discourse that you can't discuss it there, you can
also reply here :)

Thanks,

--Ned.

2019-08-14 Thread Ned Batchelder
Our forum is live at https://discuss.openedx.org. Soon we will be retiring
this mailing list and using Discourse instead. The forum will be a better

moving over there.

Please introduce yourself in the Introductions category:

Re: [edx-code] How to host selective MooC courses on your own Edx Instance that are currently offered by Edx Site

2019-08-04 Thread Ned Batchelder
The course on edX are not open-source. They are owned by the institutions
that authored them. You would have to work out an arrangement with them,
but as far as I know, they do not allow other sites to run their courses.
Maybe I am wrong about that.

Coursera courses are a completely different technology. In addition to the
intellectual property concerns, technically I don't know if there is a way
to move a Coursera course to an Open edX site.

open-release/ironwood.master should work, there was a fix merged on July 2

[edx-code] Ironwood.2

2019-06-06 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hey all,

Ironwood has been out for a few months now. In that time, we've made some
fixes to the ironwood.master branch. Today we've tagged a new Ironwood
release, *open-release/ironwood.2*

If you are running Ironwood, we recommend updating.

If you are not running Ironwood, we recommend running Ironwood :)

The changes since ironwood.1 include:

   - Reverting and feature-flagging of "honor code not eligible for
   certificate"
   - A handful of security fixes
   - Small changes to bring the default installation into compliance with
   edX trademark policy

More details of the commit are below.

[edx-code] Ironwood.1 RC4

2019-03-17 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi there,

The last release candidate of Ironwood is available:
*open-release/ironwood.1rc4*. Ironwood is the next release of Open edX, and
it's important that everyone test it. I don't know of any changes that
need to be made before Ironwood.1 is officially done.

This release candidate adds a feature flag to turn off using the LMS as the
Studio login provider, if that was an issue for you. Thanks to Felipe
Montoya of eduNEXT for contributing it.

To install it on an Ubuntu 16.04 system, see the Native installation
instructions
,
and use OPENEDX_RELEASE=open-release/ironwood.1rc4 . These instructions
have changed since Hawthorn, and even since the first release candidate of
Ironwood, so please try them. This is a test of the instructions and the
code!

If you find a problem, or have a question, you can discuss it in the
#ironwood-beta channel in Slack or report
it in JIRA
.
If you try Ironwood, and don't have any problems, it's really helpful to
report that too :)

Thanks, your feedback is really important.

[edx-code] Ironwood.1 RC2

2019-02-26 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi there,

The next release candidate of Ironwood is available:
*open-release/ironwood.1rc2*. Ironwood is the next release of Open edX, and
it's important that everyone test it.

To install it on an Ubuntu 16.04 system, see the Native installation
instructions
,
and use OPENEDX_RELEASE=open-release/ironwood.1rc2 .

It looks like you have run this installation before. Does it always fail
at the same spot? For some reason it can't clone the analytics api git

[edx-code] Announcing Ironwood release candidate: Ironwood.1rc1 We need your help!

2019-02-04 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hey everyone,

I'm pleased to announce that we have a first release candidate for the next
Open edX release: Ironwood.1rc1. To install it, use the tag
open-release/ironwood.1rc1

Things to know:

   - We don't yet have release notes for Ironwood. We are in the process
   of pulling those together.
   - If you discover issues during your testing, please let us know. There
are a few ways you can provide feedback:
   - We have an #ironwood-beta Slack channel
  .
  - You can add notes to the Ironwood wiki page

  .
  - You can respond to this thread.
   - Note that the installation instructions

have changed slightly. The password generation step is now required.

Our goal is to release Ironwood in two weeks. In order to do that, I need
to hear back from you about how testing is going. Even if everything is
fine (especially if everything is fine?), pop into the Slack channel and
tell us that. It helps us decide how to move forward.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

J'aime, thanks for your perspective. I'm still trying to understand: does
the master of the mobile apps work against Hawthorn? You say they work

[edx-code] Ironwood is coming!

2019-01-08 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hey everyone,

The next release of the Open edX software is "Ironwood." We are getting
ready to start the release process. The first step is creating the
open-release/ironwood.master branches in the appropriate repos. I plan to
do this on Friday, January 18th.

Anything merged by that date will be part of Ironwood; anything merged
after that date will have to wait for the next release.

A week or two after the branches are created, we will have a beta for
everyone to test. Then after a few weeks of community testing, Ironwood
will be officially released.

If you have any questions or concerns, respond to this thread, or send an

[edx-code] Hawthorn.1 is here!

2018-08-07 Thread Ned Batchelder
Open edX People,

Hawthorn.1 is the first release on the "H" line of Open edX releases, and
it is available now.

The docs have been updated , including Hawthorn
release notes
.
Installation on Ubuntu is the same as with previous releases. Devstack is
now based on Docker rather than Virtualbox. Start here to understand your
options .

Thanks to all who helped test the Hawthorn beta and release candidates. It
went very smoothly, and your feedback was invaluable. I'm sorry that we
had a year-long gap between Ginkgo and Hawthorn. We're aiming to get the
next release (Ironwood!) out in less time.

As usual, if you need help with Hawthorn (or any Open edX release), the
openedx-ops mailing list, or the #ops channel in Slack, are the best places
to get help: http://open.edx.org/getting-help

Thanks,

Re: [edx-code] Re: course structure api removal from master (replaced by courses API)

2018-04-26 Thread Ned Batchelder
The API docs were getting out of date because the complexity of building
them from the edx-platform repo meant that they wouldn't build successfully
any more. Perhaps too aggressively, we removed the ReadTheDocs projects
rather than serve incorrect information. We're looking for a way to
restore them.

 Hi Open edXers:

The Course Structure API Version 0

has been deprecated for some time now and will be removed from the
 edx-platform codebase on the
master branch and will not affect any Eucalyptus release, even future
ones. Ficus will be the first Open edX release without the Course
Structure API. The grading policy endpoint will remain for the time being
and the tentative plan is for it to be incorporated into the grades api

 (V0 and still under development).

Specifically, the following endpoints will be removed:

-

api/course_structure/v0/course_structures/{course_id}/
-

api/course_structure/v0/courses/{course_id}
-

api/course_structure/v0/courses/

The grading policy endpoint will remain for the time being, although
 still deprecated:

-

/api/course_structure/v0//grading_policies/

They can be replaced with similar endpoints on the Courses API V1
 .
As far as we know, edX Insights
  was the only consumer
of the deprecated endpoints and has been cut over to the courses API
 .

We expect to have the course structure API removed the week of October
4th, 2016. If you’re impacted by this or need any help with the courses
 API, please let us know!

 Thanks,

 Dennis

[edx-code] Hawthorn update

2018-04-10 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hey everyone,

I know people have been wondering what's happening with Hawthorn, the next
Open edX release. We had been waiting on the upgrade from Django 1.8 to
Django 1.11. That is now done!

But the new European Union law General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is
set to take effect on May 25th. We are working hard on adding
underpinnings for that support, and would like to provide them in Hawthorn.

So the current plan is:

   - We'll create a Hawthorn.1 Beta 1 next week, from master.
   - Once enough GDPR support has landed, we will create the Hawthorn
master branches from master, and release a first Hawthorn.1 release
   candidate.

This means that features can shift or be added between Beta 1 and RC 1. The
Beta will be for testing the general upgrade paths and functionality of the
code that has been written since Ginkgo was cut 9 months ago. I want to
get that code into testers hands sooner rather than later, even if it means
that there could still be significant changes in Hawthorn.

I hope this makes sense to people. Of course feel free to raise concerns.

Thanks,

--Ned.

Re: [edx-code] Re: how to update Open edX version keeping the changes ???

2018-04-04 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi,

First, know that there are only very small changes between Ginkgo.1 and
Ginkgo.2, so you probably will not have a problem.

How to do this depends a lot on how you made changes. If you edited the
Open edX source files directly, then you will have to carefully extract
those changes as patches, and then try to re-apply the changes to the
updated server. I don't have specific instructions on how to do that. If
you come up with a procedure, please share it, since this question is on
other people's minds.

[edx-code] Just a little bit about Hawthorn

2018-02-08 Thread Ned Batchelder
The next Open edX release will be called Hawthorn. We don't have firm
dates, but we expect to be able to create the master branches the week
after next. Typically, finishing up the release take six weeks from that
point.

I won't try to list the features coming in Hawthorn (see previous product
announcements for that), but there are
a few new things in Hawthorn that might affect the release process. First,
we will not be supporting Vagrant any more. Devstack will be based on
Docker. Second, we will be examining release automation possibilities this
time around, and may do some discovery work related to that.

If you have concerns about what is in Hawthorn, or pull requests in flight
that should land before Hawthorn, see the Hawthorn wiki page
.

Thanks,

[edx-code] Fwd: Django 1.11 Unit Tests on Jenkins

2018-01-30 Thread Ned Batchelder
This is a change we have made to the continuous integration servers running
on the edx/edx-platform repo. If you are making pull requests, you will
see new tests being run against your changes. Just a friendly heads-up.

This is in preparation for cutting over to Django 1.11 from Django 1.8,
which is itself a pre-requisite for creating the Hawthorn release of Open
edX.

Subject: Django 1.11 Unit Tests on Jenkins
To: "Engineering - All (Employees, Contractors)"

Hi all,

*TL;DR* - As of today we are running a new job (
*edx-platform-django-upgrade-unittests-pr*) on all pull requests, which
runs the Python Unit Tests using Django 1.11.

As part of the work to upgrade the platform to Django 1.11, the platform
team has recently finished some work which enables running the Python Unit
Tests against both Django 1.8 (the current version we are using) and 1.11.
Today, we have turned on a new job on Build Jenkins (
https://build.testeng.edx.org/) that will run these tests.

The new job:

   - Is entitled '*edx-platform-django-upgrade-unittests-pr'*
   - Will report back to Github with the context '
   *jenkins/django-upgrade/python*'
   - Will be run on every pull request
   - Can be retriggered with the Github comment '*jenkins run django
   upgrade python*'

We will be running both the 1.8 and 1.11 unit tests in parallel until the
Django upgrade is complete. Python is the first context we will be running
in parallel. Soon we will be doing the same for Lettuce and Bok Choy.

All tests in the master branch are currently passing on Django 1.11. If you
run into issues on your pull request branch:

   - Rebase your branch on master if you haven't already
   - Troubleshoot and fix tests locally on devstack by prepending 'tox -e
   py27-django111 -- ' to your testing command (i.e. paver/pytest). For
   example:

tox -e py27-django111 -- paver test_system -s lms

Thanks

Re: [edx-code] New version of open edX

2018-01-24 Thread Ned Batchelder
The Hawthorn release is waiting for the upgrade from Django 1.8 to Django
1.11 to finish. That looks like it will be done in the next few weeks.
Then we will start the packaging process for Hawthorn. In the past,
finished releases have been ready about 4-6 weeks after the process starts.

We should have an update soon with more concrete plans.

[edx-code] Security announcements will no longer appear here

Hey all,

We used to send all announcements of security fixes to the edx-code and
openedx-ops lists. In an effort to simplify, we are now only sending those
announcements to the openedx-announce list:

If you have a concern about this change, please get in touch.

[edx-code] The future of Fullstack...?

2017-09-26 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi all,

As you may or may not know, until now we have had three supported
installation styles for our Open edX releases:

   1. Devstack, a Vagrant-based installation for developers modifying code.
   2. Fullstack, a Vagrant-based installation similar to a production
   install.
   3. Native, an Ansible installation for use on Ubuntu machines such as
   AWS.

We are looking ahead to our next release, Hawthorn, and plotting how these
installations will change.

Devstack will be based on Docker rather than Vagrant. EdX is using a
Docker-based devstack internally now, and we'll be ready to roll it out to
the community in Hawthorn.

Native will remain as it is.

The question now is, what should happen to Fullstack? We won't be ready to
support a Docker-based fullstack in the Hawthorn time frame. Does
Fullstack provide enough extra value over Native to warrant the time to
produce it? My inclination now is to simply drop Fullstack, and for people
to use the Native installation in a Vagrant image themselves if they want
that style of installation.

Do others see the landscape differently?

[edx-code] Joel Barciauskas

2017-08-18 Thread Ned Batchelder
We’re sad to announce that Joel Barciauskas, Open Source Engineering
Manager, will be leaving edX on August 29th.

As the manager of the Open edX team, Joel has championed many
community-centered initiatives and improvements here within edX. Joel
organized the last two Open edX conferences: 2016 at Stanford in Palo Alto,
California, and 2017 at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. His energy
and enthusiasm for the Open edX mission has been a huge asset, and we are
going to miss him.

We are actively looking for someone who will continue Joel’s work, focusing
exclusively on making the diverse and ever-growing Open edX community
better.

EdX remains fully committed to open source, to the Open edX platform, and
to the community that has grown up around it. Our mission is to make
quality education available to everyone everywhere. The Open edX community
is a key part of fulfilling that mission.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

[edx-code] Ginko.1 is here!

2017-08-15 Thread Ned Batchelder
Open edX People,

Ginko.1 is the first release on the "G" line of Open edX releases, and it
is available now.

The docs have been updated , including Ginkgo
release notes
.
Installation is the same as with previous releases. Start here to
understand your options .

We have a new section in the Installation guide that details how to migrate
existing data from a Ficus.4 installation to a Ginkgo installation.

Thanks to all who helped test the Ginkgo release candidate. It went very
smoothly, and your feedback was invaluable.

As usual, if you need help with Ginkgo (or any Open edX release), the
openedx-ops mailing list, or the #ops channel in Slack, are the best places
to get help: http://open.edx.org/getting-help

Thanks,

[edx-code] Ficus.4

2017-08-11 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi Open edX Operators,

Today we released an update to the Ficus line of the Open edX software.
There are two reasons for this:

1) A security fix was made to prevent header poisoning of password reset
emails.
2) Some database migrations were applied that will ease the transition to
Ginkgo.

Anyone running Ficus should upgrade to Ficus.4.

Ginkgo will be available very soon. In the meantime, enjoy Ficus.4

If you have questions, Slack or the openedx-ops mailing list (
https://open.edx.org/getting-help) are the best venues.

Re: [edx-code] Docker Devstack Beta

2017-07-18 Thread Ned Batchelder
I am really excited to see the Docker Devstack work progressing. I'll just
clarify: Docker Devstack is meant for developers working against the latest
code on master of edx-platform and other repos. Ginkgo will *not* have
Docker support: it will ship with a Vagrant-based devstack just as the
previous releases have.

Our plan is that Docker Devstack will be supported in Hawthorn. We'll
evaluate whether to support both Docker and Vagrant for devstack in that
release. Also unknown is whether there will be a Docker fullstack, and
what will happen to the Vagrant-based fullstack.

Thanks for listening, and happy hacking,

not sure what kind of turn-around time they aim for.

[edx-code] Ficus.3: MathJax fix

2017-04-21 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi Open edXers,

Today we released Ficus.3, the third release of the Ficus release line of
Open edX. This release has an important fix for MathJax, and a few minor
fixes, detailed in the release notes:
:*

   - MathJax announced that
its distribution point for the MathJax library will be shutting down at the
end of April. MathJax is now loaded from cdnjs instead.
   - In edx-platform, Django was upgraded from 1.8.17 to 1.8.18.
   - The Analytics applications, including the analytics devstack, have
   been updated for Ubuntu 16.04.
   - To address a connection pooling issue in Ubuntu 16.04, we’ve changed
how we launch new gunicorn web server processes.

*If you are using MathJax in your courses, you need to install Ficus.3
before the end of April.*

If you have questions, Slack or the openedx-ops mailing list (
https://open.edx.org/getting-help) are the best venues.

Thanks,

--Ned.

Re: [edx-code] adding python packages to edx conda

2017-04-19 Thread Ned Batchelder
It's not that Open edX support conda requirements files. When you write
your XBlock, you will have a setup.py, and you can put whatever Python
packages you want in the install_requires value there. But that is only
for Python packages. There isn't a mechanism that will automatically
install ffmpeg for you when you install your XBlock. You'll need to put
instructions in the README file, and installers will have to install it
somehow.

Re: [edx-code] using Linux executables from xBlock

2017-04-18 Thread Ned Batchelder
Robert,

You can use any Python you like in your XBlock. You have to be careful not
to depend on something that might not be present, or might change.

I'm curious about using an audio processing toolkit from an XBlock. What
are you envisioning?

Typically, you wouldn't try to include other packages in your XBlock, you
would list them as requirements. They would get installed (if needed) when
your XBlock was installed. What packages do you need?

[edx-code] Minor release: Ficus.2

2017-03-29 Thread Ned Batchelder
Hi Open edXers,

Today we released Ficus.2, the second release of the Ficus release line of
Open edX. This release has only a few minor fixes, detailed in the release
notes:
http://edx.readthedocs.io/projects/open-edx-release-notes/en/latest/ficus.html#march-2017-ficus-2
:

   - If you used the password randomization step during installation, a
database user named “edxapp_replica001” is created. This username is
invalid because it is too long. This issue is now fixed: the randomization
step no longer creates a separate user for the replica database.
   - The certificates process was restarting constantly, due to not being
able to communicate with XQueue. This issue has been fixed.
   - The help links in LMS and Studio now display the Ficus version of the
docs, rather than the latest version.

If you have already installed Ficus.1, you probably don't need to install
Ficus.2.

If you have questions, Slack or the openedx-ops mailing list (
https://open.edx.org/getting-help) are the best venues.

Thanks,

--Ned.

Re: [edx-code] How to identify the Open Edx version (without any server access)

2017-03-12 Thread Ned Batchelder
Yves, there isn't a simple marker, because everyone can customize the
source, so many sites will not be exactly one of the Open edX releases. If
you look on Transifex, you can see resources specific to the recent Open
edX releases: https://www.transifex.com/open-edx/open-edx-releases/content/

Currently, XBlock is only an in-process Python API. We've long wanted to
make them remotable, so that an XBlock could execute on another machine, or

[edx-code] Ficus.1 is here!

2017-02-23 Thread Ned Batchelder
Everyone, I am very pleased to announce the availability of the first
official Ficus release: Ficus.1

Ficus is the first Open edX release to run on Ubuntu 16.04. Installation
options are here:
https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/display/OpenOPS/Open+edX+Installation+Options.
Because of the switch from Ubuntu 12.04 to 16.04, there is no update
procedure from Eucalyptus. You must install a new machine with Ficus.

For early adopters: Ficus.1 is the same as Ficus.1rc4.

The docs and release notes are not yet updated, we'll be doing that next.

Big thanks to everyone for their patience and feedback during the RC phase.
Your accurate reporting of your experiences helped make this a solid
release.

As usual, if you need help with Ficus (or any Open edX release), the
openedx-ops mailing list, or the #ops channel in Slack, are the best places
to get help: http://open.edx.org/getting-help

Thanks,

[edx-code] Ficus 1 RC4

2017-02-16 Thread Ned Batchelder
Everyone,

The next Ficus test release is available: open-release/ficus.1rc4 . This
may become the true Ficus release, depending on what reports we get from
the community in the next few days. Please try this on *test systems* and
let us know what you find.

Ficus is the first Open edX release that runs on Ubuntu 16.04. Eucalyptus
runs on 12.04, which Ubuntu will stop supporting this April. Running Ficus
will be important to stay current with operating system updates.

Some release notes:

   - This is the Ficus code. There will be fixes applied, but typical
development will not affect Ficus from this point on.
   - There is no upgrade script from Eucalyptus to Ficus, and there will
not be one. Eucalyptus runs on Ubuntu 12.04, Ficus on 16.04. The major
operating system bump means that automatic upgrading is not possible.
   - Docs have not been updated yet.

If you need help with Ficus.1rc4, the openedx-ops mailing list, or the #ops
channel in Slack, are the best places to get help: http://open.edx.org/gett
ing-help

2017-02-16 Thread Ned Batchelder
Currently, that is how courses created in Studio are served by the LMS. A
longer-term solution is to author in one place and then publish to another
place, but that isn't implemented yet.

[edx-code] Ficus 1 RC3

2017-02-08 Thread Ned Batchelder
Everyone,

The next Ficus test release is available: open-release/ficus.1rc3 . (If
you have been following closely, you will note that we skipped rc2).

This is *not for production*! This release is based on the edx.org code of
January 10th, which will be the basis for Ficus.

Some release notes:

   - This is the Ficus code. There will be fixes applied, but typical
development will not affect Ficus from this point on.
   - This version now has a Fullstack installation, which installs the same
code and services as Native, but in a Vagrant box.
   - The Native instructions now include a step to randomize passwords.
   - There is no upgrade script from Eucalyptus to Ficus, and there will
not be one. Eucalyptus runs on Ubuntu 12.04, Ficus on 16.04. The major
operating system bump means that automatic upgrading is not possible.
   - Docs have not been updated yet.

Re: [edx-code] Open Edx installation on Window 10

Open edX is only supported on Ubuntu. You can install on Windows using
Virtualbox (or other virtualization). In the past, devstack has not worked
because Virtualbox shared filesystems didn't support symlinks properly. A
native install in Virtualbox might work?

Re: [edx-code] Re: sudo su edxapp not working

2016-09-14 Thread Ned Batchelder
Please double-check that you are dealing with a devstack installation. You
shouldn't have to override the shell if the installation was successful.
If your devstack doesn't let you change the user, then check the
installation logs to find out what failed.

If you have a fullstack installation, then your shells will be set to
/bin/false, since you shouldn't need shell access as those other users.

Christopher,

Sorry, but this list is about the software that powers edx.org. We won't
know the answers to your questions. You should try asking at

[edx-code] Eucalyptus is here!

2016-08-26 Thread Ned Batchelder
Fellow Open edXers:

I'm pleased to announce that the fifth Open edX release is now available:
Eucalyptus.1 is the first release on the Eucalyptus line.

The blog post
summarizes the new features. The install instructions

will get you started on new installations, the upgrade instructions

will help you upgrade your existing Dogwood installations.

If you need help at any point, see the Getting Help
 page for ways to ask.

We're proud of all the work that went into producing Eucalyptus, we hope
you get good use from it! Many thanks to all in the community who
contributed, whether it was code, documentation, or testing.

2016-08-03 Thread Ned Batchelder
Wenting,
