Hi -
I would like to hook my Elecraft MD2 to the rear microphone connector of
my K3.
I'll get a small box and mount a male 8-pin connector on one end for the
microphone and a cable to a 1/8 plug (stereo or mono?) on the other end
to plug into the K3 rear panel.
What pins get connected? How
I realize this topic is not new, but it is confusing to review the archives

advertised to support the K2. Can it be used out of the box to support the
K2? Can I plug it into the serial port of the K2 (okay not a real
If your going to the trouble of getting the 8 pin connector, why not get a line

Ron,
This topic has been discussed over just the past few days here on the
reflector.
Apparently, people are having different experiences. My K2 works by plugging
the K2's ** serial cable ** into the end of the KUSB cable and setting
up the application software to run at 4800 / N / 8 / 1.
I used CW keyeing via serial successfuly. Now after splitting the port via
Eterlogic to connect SDR-IQ, it does not work.
Did anybody get it to work?
Would LP-Bridge work?
Would it cause timing problems?

Ron, Brian,
Yes, that is correct - the KUSB should not be plugged directly into the
back of the K2 - the K2 can be damaged.
All that uses a DB-9 connector is NOT a serial port connection, the K2
is clearly labeled AUX I/O.
Use the K2 defined cable to plug into the KUSB and all will be OK (if

Brian,
Is that a 3 terminal mic element? If so, then you can follow the
manufacturer's instructions and apply the 5 volts to the voltage
terminal on the element.
OTOH, most of these elements are 2 terminal, and the voltage should be
applied to the AF pin through a resistor - try 5.6k like the
Slightly OT, but when it comes to processors, there's no way I'd use a
thermal pad.
A thin layer of Arctic Silver is a far better heat conductor than any
thermal pad available.
I see no downside to using AS on any FET apart from the potential mess, but
the trick is to use a small amount. A
Thanks, Don.
Not knowing any better, I simply shorted the AF and MICBIAS when I connected
the mic to the K3. From what I can see in the K3 schematics, the only
bypassing on the MICBIAS line is 1uF (rev B, sheet 5 of 7, Front Panel -
Miscellaneous). Can I build the same resistor into the mic plug
All of my mics are set up for standard Yaesu hf rigs including an MD-100 and an
MH-31. My K2 was set up for this configuration too.
Is it feasible to configure the K3 to use these mics? Or do I need to change
all of the mic configurations?
Thanks!
Dean
Dean,
The K3 is permanently wired for the Elecraft mic configuration, so you
must either create an adapter or rewire your microphones for the
Elecraft pinout. If you choose to rewire the microphones, you will have
to change your K2 as well if you wish to use the same mic on both.

Brian,
You *could* put the resistor in the mic plug, but I would think it
easier to add the resistor in the K2 to the back of the microphone jack
between pin 1 and pin 6 as is normally done. In the K3, you simply turn
Bias on in the menu.
If you choose to put the resistor in the mic plug,

If it's like most 2-wire mics, you want a series resistor between V+
and the hot terminal of the mic. It serves as the load resistor
for the output stage of the mic, and also limits current to that
output stage
I use a MD-100 with my K3 with excellant results. I purchased a NCS
Mulit-Switcher to do the task. I use the same mike on the K3, a Kenwood

What's the best way to interface a K3 with a Centurion QSK amplifier? I
can run the keying through the Centurion back to the K3 (as Ten Tec

When my K3 looses power, it will not switch on itself after power is back.
Is there a way to achieve this?
The question is because I am thinking of an unattended use with an
unreliable power source.

You don't have to buy one to try it out. You can adjust the
SHIFT/WIDTH controls to see what it sounds like. Having a narrow
roofing filter pays off in a contest or other heavy operating
conditions to keep something loud in the space between the roofing
bandwidth and DSP bandwidth from pumping
Werner,
The K3 has a Remote Power ON input on the ACC connector. See the manual
page 44 for how it is to be used.
You might want to add a battery at the output of the power supply
because of the unreliable power source which will allow an orderly
shutdown of the K3 when the mains power is

The instructions have you clipping one SMT resistor and then removing
the pieces.
I've did a trial of this method on a junk PCB here.
At least on the board I used, there apparently is some kind of adhesive
under under the chip. The clipping process seems to remove the solder
resist and

The K3 electronics seems to be assembled with a clean SMT process,
which means that only solder paste is used to hold the components on

You should not experience the same problem with K3 PCBA's. I've done
most of the approved rework
Another solution to the mic interface problem is the MFJ 1251 Universal

You probably already know this, but for the archives, there is one
reason: if the active component must be insulated from ground, Bergquist
