David,
Yes, the peak is VERY broad. You may have to connect an AC voltmeter across
the speaker connector to find the peak if you cannot discern it by ear. The
peak is normally 1 to 1 1/2 turns down from the top of the can. Be certain
you are using CW mode. If your peak is right at the top of
I had been having problems with my KAT100 and hoped the KPA100 upgrade
would help. I installed the upgrade and all works well with an external
tuner other than the KAT100. But, the KAT100 problems persist.
Here's the problem. The KAT100 tunes fine on all bands into my 50 ohm

Due to my clumsiness in removing my blown finals I have managed
to damage the PCB of my K2. I managed to remove half of the land for the
Base of Q7 on the top of the PCB, and slightly lifted the land for the
emitter of Q8 on the underside of the board. I still have
John,
I believe the problem is entirely in your KAT100.
Check all your connecting cables first thing (do a continuity test on both
the center conductor and shield and check for shorts). It sounds like your
tuner is operating into an open circuit or a shorted one.
If you have an antenna

Steve,
I am not familiar with any of the board repair materials, so without any
experience with them, I would go the safe route and add wires to whatever is
left of the PC traces - scrape off the green solder mask to solder the wire
onto the remaining trace or run full length point to point
International Crystal and Cal Crystal might be sources.
Better still, purchase and build the XG-2 kit!

I am selling an IFR-1500 Service Monitor on ebay (item=32004992).
I listed it here a couple months ago, with no success. But would not
want any friends here to miss out if interested...

Why produce a kit when anyone capable of building a K2 can knock up a
satisfactory interface using a handful of junk box parts? I have never seen
the point of the RigBlaster. I admit that I'm now using a RigExpert
commercial interface but the reason for that was to free up the sound card

iMic don't isolate the Mac-ground to TRX-ground. It's better you have

While I am waiting for my XG2 to arrive I would like to discuss the

Hi Johnny,
We started shipping W1s today (Fri).
The latest W1 manual is now on our manual download page. It includes the
complete serial command set for the W1.
We do not supply a serial cable with the W1, since it is very easy to
make. (It is a 3.5mm stereo plug on one end and a DB9 on the

I find the K2 on SSB is perfectly adequate, I even get compliments on audio
quality. No problems in DX pile ups. I'm using a Kenwood MC-60 desk mike and
previously a Kenwood hand mic, an MC-43 perhaps?
And if you're looking for a 100 watt amp, the KPA100 is the only game in town.

John,
Let's try that measurement of U3 pins 6 and 7 again, this time with the
KAT100 in CAL mode and after pressing TUNE. Those pins should read zero
volts during transmit when th epower is set for 11 watts or more, but should
go to a higher voltage if the power is less than 10 watts.
If that
Don -
I have gone from bad to worse. I remelted some solder joints, replaced
the 1n5711 diodes, and re-calibrated the tuner. It seemed to work for a
bit, but problems returned. But now the K2/100 also has problems.
With the KAT100 I tuned the antenna to 80m. It worked OK on QRP, but
John,
It sounds like your KPA100 is self oscillating when on 80 meters (and
perhaps other bands too).
That fact alone will drive your KAT100 crazy.
An oscillation problem will not show up on a dummy load because the dummy
load is not frequency sensitive (an antenna and tuner will be frequency

Larry,
I assume a 4 band filter board.
Are the trimmers on the filter board set near the center point? If not,
realign the 15 and 20 meter filters. It is possible to align the frequency

the trimmers to the center, then

Yes, let's settle the KPA100 first as that's the latest changes I have
made by doing the upgrade kit.
Q6 has the correct voltages except for the drain on transmit. Manual
says 115v and I get 135v. Voltages on Q7 look the same as in the
manual. I measured R11 which feeds the Q6
Well, I finished the KSB2 option, turning my bare-bones K2 into a K2/SSB. I

Twenty meters was fantastic this week. Forty meters has been good

very far forward. This makes hearing the sidetone more difficult but it
does offer some protection from the very loud signals. The
Good evening folks. I thought I would pass along a little information to those

logged many a QSO.
I dusted off my Sierra today and found that it was
