[Elecraft] P3 Minor Software Bug?
The P3 frequency display is easily confused by use of RIT. Alan said fixing it was on the list and I'm just wondering if it's near the top. He posted a workaround on Nov 10 - using CENTER - but I'm finding I have to use it quite a lot. It would be much more convenient not to have to :-) 73 to all Geoff G3UCK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
Kjeld, I used a table away from electrical appliances and covered it with tin or aluminum foil. I had an antistatic wrist strap which I connected to this large piece of foil and worked in this manner. Ideally you would connect the foil to a ground through a 1 MegOhm resistor. Note I did not power the K3 or any test equipment up while working atop this foil otherwise one would possibly cause a short or worse electrocute oneself. Generally the larger the area of conductor the less the difficulty with ESD, at component level the risk of ESD damage is greatest, at board level it is considerably reduced and at assembly level it is further reduced. You do the above at your own risk but it worked for me. Wear cotton avoid synthetic clothing and stay away from rugs or carpets. Safety first and I suppose this means we should both purchase an anti-static mat. Good luck and please thinks safety first. 73 Doug EI2CN -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Kjeld Holm Sent: 17 December 2010 09:18 To: 'elecraft' Subject: [Elecraft] K3 ESD Dear all, I am about to install my subreceiver and would like to finish before the weekend but I have no ESD work place. Wear cotton clothing rather than nylon or highly static material; avoid walking around on static-prone carpets. Wrap a length of bare copper wire around your wrist and solder a 2 megohm resistor to it. Well, maybe do the soldering first... The resistor can be 1 megohm or anything else in that region. It purpose is to limit any ESD current surge, and also to limit any accidental shock current in your body. For both of those reasons, the resistor should be at least 250V rated, and the wrist band must be insulated from any accidental contact (except to yourself). Connect that to a nearby ground connection. Just ensure that the K3 is always at the same potential as yourself by touching its frame regularly. NO - that is completely the wrong way around! A ground connection to the Mother Planet will NOT ensure ESD protection. If done without proper understanding, it is more likely to *increase* the risks to both the equipment and yourself. The whole purpose of ESD protection is to minimize all voltage differences and current surges between your body and the electronic components, so connect your home-made wrist strap directly to the K3. Since you do not have a proper ESD mat, place the K3 and KRX3 on a sheet of aluminium foil. Before opening the anti-static bag containing the KRX3, leave the bag on the foil for a short time to allow any static potentials to equalize. You will then be working with a reasonable level of ESD protection. As it isn't necessary to connect any other mains-powered equipment or use a soldering iron while installing K3 option boards, grounding of the K3 and the sheet of foil is purely optional. -- 73 from Ian GM3SEK http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I also put *everything* on a metal tea tray which has the Mohm resistor to earth. My wrist strap connects to the tea tray. Equi-potential is the secret. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
Hello, Kjeld... I have done lots of work with electrostatic-sensitive components for a number of years, and have never had anything wrt ESD other than a wrist-strap (and its IMPORTANT series resistor). I rarely use the wrist-strap, but instead try to use common sense wrt grounding... I use a grounded soldering station, which in your case of the K3+subreceiver is irrelevant, and am careful to discharge myself on one or more grounded devices AFTER seating myself to work on the electronics. I habitually to wear cotton or wool clothing, not plastic (synthetic) cloth. Even if the devices on which you ground yourself are not physically grounded, if they are large enough their capacitance will accept enough charge to equalize potential differences in the surroundings and render you non-dangerous wrt ESD. (After all, a ground is really a connection to a rather large conducting sphere called the earth.) In the USA most devices such as computers, some lamps, etc. have a 3rd wire connection to ground and make good discharge devices. One simply wants to minimize the potential difference between you, your work object, your soldering iron, and your coffee cup. Great anxiety is not necessary. [Elecraft] Using the K3 down to 461-KHz
I am licensed under the ARRL 600m Experimental Group which operates 495-510 KHz. The warc recommendations for 461-469, 471-478 KHz are below the current min. freq. for the K3, 480-KHz. Will the K3 operate down there with a firmware change or will it take hardware mods? If the allocation is approved our experimental license may be modified for operating (or cancelled since ham licenses will be approved). One of the deciding factors for buying my K3/10 was the ability to operate on MW bands (in TEST mode). Re: [Elecraft] Data A filter questions (solved)
Thanks for the note, Joe. You got me on the oversight of the firmware release note, that's sort of ancient history. However, it is also in the latest manual rev. Unfortunately, my desktop icon pointed to Rev D6, not the latest D9, so when I checked the manual, I found nothing. Nevertheless, I am now kicking myself, not for the oversight, (well a little) but for not having made a little video of this to show that even after resetting the PB CTRL Shift=.05, Lo/Hi still failed to work in Data A although it did, as it should, in CW. Unfortunately, (from a vindication standpoint anyway) after an overnight power down, this morning it is behaving normally. re: Your comment about the default filter, the normalized filter is 400 Hz but the default filter is whatever was selected the last time you were on that mode. I use M1-M4 for CW, SSB, Data A and AFSK A, respectively. Regardless of the filter setup when a memory was stored, when any data mode is recalled, you get the last filter configuration used in a digital mode. The manual is not very useful here, declaring that filter presets are stored, which is kind of ambiguous. So, the operational problem is solved, my bewilderment is not. You will find that information in the firmware release notes when the 10 Hz step was first released (MCU 3.25/DSP 2.21). Applies to CW and DATA only; LOCUT/HICUT cannot be used when 10 HZ shift steps are in effect; Width steps remain 50 Hz in all cases As to your 400 Hz filter, that is the default in all data modes. A small board to insert 12 volts DC on the Coax at the shack and a similar board to pick it up at the antenna end to run relays or power remote tuners without impacting the RF carried on the coax. I really do not want to run a second set of cables just for this purpose. It would be great if it was configured with some more or less standard DPDT relay positions (optional of course) that could be populated as needed by the user to meet various switching needs. They are much simpler and much more user friendly in a multiop environment and all of the nagging compatibility and stability issues with Elecraft-MicroHam-WinTest-WriteLog have disappeared. Our final request for 2010 for the Elecraft Team: Is there a software upgrade in the works for the radio to remember the sub-receiver and diversity settings when switching from band to band? That would remove the final roadblock from the operator having to use ONLY the band switch to change bands at our station (the sub-receiver stays on from band to band while the diversity goes off). Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
As the KRX3 manual says (pg 5), avoid voltage differences between yourself and the components. If you don't have an anti-static mat or wrist strap: DO NOT use carpet on your work bench (a common practice before solid state). Wood, Formica, etc., is fine. Metal is also okay for this, but not a good practice for any bench on which you'll power up a rig. DO NOT use Styrofoam or other plastics to hold parts other than the pink bags some parts are shipped in. DO touch an unpainted metal ground often while working. (When without a pad I touch a ground every time before picking up an electronic part or pcb - it only takes a fraction of a second to do so.) DO touch an unpainted metal part of the K3 itself after picking up a part and before touching the part to the K3. (That equalizes any possible voltage difference between you - and the part you're holding - and the K3 so the charge won't flow through the part.) If you ground the metal case of the K3, you can touch it before picking up each part to accomplish both objectives at the same time. The Mains supply safety ground is a perfectly good ground to use to discharge yourself. There's more background on page 5 of the KRX3 manual, but the above steps will keep you and the parts safe without a dedicated ESD workstation. I've mentioned this idea before but I like it so much I'll repeat it: I attached a metal yardstick (meter stick) to the front of my workbench and connected it to ground through a 1 meg resistor. My arms naturally fall on it, and it is invaluable when building kits and cutting wire to length. I have an aluminum muffin tin for holding parts which is also connected to ground via a resistor. I use a wrist strap and mat too, but I suspect the ruler would be enough by itself. [Elecraft] K3 to KRC2 problem
My K3 has worked flawlessly up until now. Lately when you Grab a DX Spot or punch in a band change on HamRadioDeluxe the KRC-2 fails to make the proper change of the Antenna Selection. If you then push the Band Up or Band Down buttons on the K3 radio and back to the band desired Then the KRC-2 does go to the correct Antenna selection. It makes things a little difficult for me as I am presently 1200 miles away from the radio. This weekend a friend will be there operating the station so its my chance for him to look at a few things and maybe correct the problem. Anyone have any good ideas of where or what to look at? Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
NO no no ... you don't want to connect yourself to ground. You want to connect yourself to whatever semi-conducting surface you are working on (the one that the K3 and it's components are resting on). Connecting yourself to ground merely increases the chance that there will be a potential between you and the rig. I simply laid out a large enough amount of aluminum foil to hold everything, wrapped a bare wire around my arm just above my elbow, and used a clip lead to connect the bare wire to the aluminum foil. I know everyone recommends a large value resistor be placed in series with the bare wire for safety reasons, but I did all this on a large wooden table several feet away from anything else and skin resistance here in dry Arizona is fairly high anyway. Dave AB7E On 12/17/2010 2:34 AM, David Pratt wrote: Wear cotton clothing rather than nylon or highly static material; avoid walking around on static-prone carpets. Wrap a length of bare copper wire around your wrist and solder a 2 megohm resistor to it. Connect that to a nearby ground connection. Just ensure that the K3 is always at the same potential as yourself by touching its frame regularly. You should be okay at that. 73 de David G4DMP In a recent message, Kjeld Holmk...@kh-translation.dk writes I am about to install my subreceiver and would like to finish before the weekend but I have no ESD work place. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESD
Proper electrostatic mats are cheap and readily available. A local electronics shop in Seattle sells 3x4 foot sheets of the material for about $30, and they tend to charge higher prices since they are the only local source for electronic components. Also, Radio Shack sells a folding plastic model complete with wrist strap, resistor and clip. Although some on the reflector question whether the Radio Shack model is sufficiently competent for the task, I have had mine for many years and built a K2 and K3 on it with no problems, and for some of it I was working over carpet. Re: [Elecraft] A Mini Module I would love to see (AC0LP)
Many years ago I built a remote antenna switch that allowed feeding up to 4 antennas from the same feedline. The feedline also was used for the control signal, so no additional wires were needed. It was a very simple circuit. The switch box at the top of the tower contained 5 coax connectors, two DPDT relays, two diodes, an RF choke and a couple capacitors. The control box in the shack contained 2 coax connectors, a 60-Hz power transformer, a 4-position switch, an RF choke, two diodes and a couple capacitors. The schematic is at http://www.cds1.net/~n1al/ham/ant_switch.GIF The electrolytic capacitors in the switch box may not be needed, depending on the relays. I believe I used 0.1 uF for the coupling and bypass capacitors something like 22 or 47 uH for the RF chokes. (A smaller choke might be required for VHF.) The transformer was chosen to provide the correct relay voltage. You may need to add resistors in series with the relay coils to fine-tune the voltage. It would be great if it was configured with some more or less standard DPDT relay positions (optional of course) that could be populated as needed by the user to meet various switching needs. MFJ does offer such a beast (4116 and 4117 without the relays) - but I admit to some significant uncertainty in the quality of the design and the of the components used in the manufacturing. This same thing happened to me - I was about 35 at the time and I threw the soldering iron across the room and it landed on the rya shag rug, burning an outline of the iron into the wool rug. [Elecraft] Use of DB9 Switch with K3?
At times, my microHam CW Keyer is connected to my K3 via the P3. However, when I want to download new firmware for the K3, I have to disconnect the CW Keyer from the RS232 port, and connect the DB9 from the computer's serial port to the K3 via the P3. Can I use a DB9 A/B switch to switch between the the two DB9 cables without creating any problems? 73, George George Wagner, K5KG Sarasota, FL 941-400-1960 cell __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Use of DB9 Switch with K3?
Hi, George. I use three DB9 ABCD switches in my SO2R station. Let's call them Left, Right and Development computer. I write software for the K3 and I very frequently need to send firmware from my development computer to one of my two K3s. Each of two K3s is connected to the common center connector of the corresponding Left and Right DB9 ABCD switches. The A input of the Left and Right DB9 ABCD switches is connected to MK2R+ cables. The B input of the left and right DB9 ABCD switches goes to A and B of the Development computer switch. The center of the Development computer switch goes thru a KUSB USB to Serial adapter to my development computer. To operate with the MK2R+, I switch both Left and Right DB9 switches to A. To load firmware, I switch both Left and Right DB9 switches to B. I switch the Development computer DB9 switch to A to load the left K3 with firmware, and B to load the right K3 with firmware. I've had no difficulties with two of these boxes in series. I use a one meter DB9 straight through jumper from Left and Right DB9 switches to the back panel of my K3s. I use another one meter jumper from the Left and Right DB9 switches to the Development Computer DB9 switch. I use a two meter or sometimes two two-meter jumpers from the development computer to the Development computer DB9 switch. Whew! A picture would be easier, I think. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of georgek...@aol.com Sent: Friday, December 17, 2010 7:45 PM To: supp...@microham.com; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Use of DB9 Switch with K3?
