Much depends on the specific adaptors you got: I have a Xircom
You shouldn't need any special drivers. I have used a USB/Serial adaptor
with Mandrake without any problems. I can't remember the details but you
simply use /dev/USBtty0 or whatever port you are on.
Do a google and you will find the details; it's quite straight forward.

one...and it seemed to indicate that tuning SSB/CW was a bit strange
in that you could only program SSB/CW reception in one particular bank
of memories or something strange of that nature, and you couldn't
switch modes
I think you might be thinking of the 1102, as this has a SSB switch on the
front that turns on the BFO. Really easy to use and neat little rig...
