Vic,
Having blown up my share of probe diodes, I find it useful to stick a label
on any such homemade probe noting its maximum safe peak working voltage
derived from the diode's PIV rating.

Jim,
Congrats on taking on the K2! I'm just a couple of weeks ahead of you,
feverishly working on s/n 5853, the low power version.
Regarding the power supply-- I'm starting out with a Pyramid PS-4KX (13.8 V.
3A continous, 4A surge) that I have on hand. Since I also purchased the KBT2
Chuck and all,
With the internal battery, there is an alternative to powering the K2 with a
14.1 volt supply - make provisions to attach a 3 state charger directly to
the battery terminals. To see how that can be accomplished safely, check
out my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com

Hi guys,
Work (ouch! I smashed my finger and it hurts to type letters like ki,)
.. working on the KPA100 and have noticed soldering is tougher than
it was on the K2. Heat transfer from the top to the part/board is hit

My technique is to remove the iron from the holder, wipe it on the damp
sponge (2 swipes, one on each side of the tip), bring it under my circle
light / magnifier and tin the tip. Delay from wiping to tinning is
about 5 seconds.
Maybe the oxidation isn't coming off when I clean it on the
Yes, you can just pull the SSB board, and put in two jumpers (the ends of
the end jacks) and one capacitor (pins 5 and 7 of the big jack, C169 IIRC -
Check the schematic.
I have no ideas on the cold/High-current issue.

Rework-Eliminators. Here's where they are great. Get the module header
boards and build them up. Takes maybe a hour and you'll have a full set
of plug-in dummy boards to replace the options you've removed. Great
for trouble shooting.
My K2 shows strange things after power on during TX for the
I want to thank all who responded to my request.
I have decided that if I WAS to buya new kit it would be the KX1; however,
I decided on spending the money on a better antenna.
Currently the only antenna I have is a windom tangled up in my attic.

Hi David,
Could you give us a few specifics on where to find a low cost scope utilizing
a PC (or even better an OS based Palm).
Thanks

One great place to look is www.govliquidation.com.
Its an auction site for the liquidation of government assets. I
bought a 465B in great shape for 65 bucks. Its a little more involved
than e-Bay (but only a little). The involvement is that you have to
arrange for a pickup and shipment of

They don't charge for software, you can download it straight from their site
whether or not you buy from them. There should be a demo version, but I
haven't looked. I will probably use

I have a Tech 465 that no longer works for reasons unknown All I can say is
that beam finder doesn't put a dot on the screen from either channel. I really
would like to find someone who could fix it for a reasonable fee. Do we have
someone on the reflector who fixes scopes or can lead me to
Bill,
I would recommend you send it to 'Mr. Scope Expert' himself - Bob Garcia.
His email is mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
He recently fixed my Tek 465A with a triggering problem for a FB price and
quite prompt service.
Of course if the CRT is gone on yours, you are out of luck for repairs
unless Bob
Everyone has their favorite method, and here's mine from an old ARRL
handbook. Before you slip (or actually, screw on) the barrel to the
coax, trim the outer jacket and then tin the braid. This works best if
you have good quality coax as the braid is thicker:).Then, take a
pipe cutter to trim
Hello all!
Well, we had a new bed delivered on Saturday so I had to take the old
water-bed frame apart. As I started disassembly, it looked like I might
use the old frame. I've been working on the old frame for the past three
days and I now have a nice wrap-around bench. One leg is 7' x 2' and
The November RFTB has come and gone. Only one more Sprint for 2006;
after which we will name the Top Hog of the Sty for the year. I trust
you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving; and that you're all finished with
your holiday gift buying and decorating! (Just joshing!)

Hello Jacques
Using the K2 at 10W with a Gap Titan vertical I have been able to work 5A7A
on 40, 30, 20 15 meter CW so far. I can hear them on 80 CW but based on
past experience I don't hold out much hope of working him on 80 meters with
the Titan.
In general I've found the K2/Titan
John,
You may want to look into using a computer connection to the K2 and
controlling the K2 over a wireless LAN connection from your laptop computer.
I believe Ham Radio Deluxe provides for control of the K2 and Skype can
carry the audio. In fact, you can control your K2 from anywhere you have
